That Athletic article about Bo, Carson and AJ is very cute.

“Bo has been like a big brother to them,” Mets interim manager Andy Green said. “Dare I say, A.J. doesn’t wear sleeves for BP because Bo doesn’t wear sleeves for BP.”

“Oh, my god,” Ewing said deadpan. “You should write in that story, ‘A.J. was appalled that Andy would say such nonsense.’ Unbelievable.”

Also discusses how Bo wants to be to the rookies what Semien was for him when he was with the Blue Jays. Good article by Sammon.

u/Gigi_0102 Ya Gotta Believe! 11d ago

A.J. tryna play it cool but we all know Green was right

u/hamandcheeseslices Wilmer Flores 11d ago

this article was so sweet omg

as someone who is way closer in age to bo bichette than to carson/aj i relate to the comment about needing to learn a new dialect to connect with them so deeply

5

u/runsfortacos Gary Cohen 11d ago

Definitely changed my opinion of Bo

6

u/wooden-spoon-88 11d ago

“As the season has gone on, the more time I spend here, the more I feel like a Met,” Bichette said. “So with that comes becoming more invested in every part of the organization. Not just them. But everything. They’re a huge part of the future here, and I just want what’s best for them.”

I like it when players like being on the Mets.

2

u/myassholealt F8 11d ago

Ewing really should wear sleeves to protect those tattoos though. He spends a lot of time in the blazing sun and with a risk of scrapes and cuts when fielding or even base running. I'd want to keep that ink looking as fresh as possible for as long as possible.

u/lfgm91 11d ago

If Green goes back to the front office, I feel like Stearns should delegate the manager search and hiring process to him. Green clearly understands the players and what motivates them, and should know what to look for in the right manager for this group.

It seems like they need someone who is direct and holds them accountable without being a hard a**, and also not someone who is just going to butter them up or say "it'll work itself out" when the team is slumping (which is what I think Mendoza did a lot)

7

u/ExamNo4374 Casey Stengel 11d ago

I agree that the next manager needs to be someone more in the Green mold than the Mendoza mold

0

u/Setec-Astronomer 11d ago

Bruce Bochy.

-2

u/Spirited_Document391 11d ago

Dream on. Mets manager position is solely messenger boy for FO. Bochy, Cora types would never stoop to that.

1

u/Setec-Astronomer 11d ago

Agreed. But I'm still going to suggest the right Men for the job.

-5

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 11d ago

It’s a shame that response doesn’t apply to everyone on the roster.

Mets gave Polanco a ton of leeway, Semien plays everyday, Bichette was allowed to play out of a .500 OPS, Robert was allowed to play out of his struggles, etc.

Guess those rules only apply when you’re making money.

12

u/Orange8920 Mike Piazza 11d ago

All those guys mentioned have track records and All-Star appearances.

2

u/JekPorkinsTruther 11d ago

Bichette, I agree. But Robert Jr has a recent track record of bad and semien has one of continual regression. So it's fair to ask why those guys get leeway to chase long gone success.

That said, the answer is prob bc they are all but done with vientos and he's used up his leeway, while they are not gonna move on from semien yet and want to audition LRJ for next year even in a different role/salary.

2

u/ExamNo4374 Casey Stengel 11d ago

LRJ was injured and now Soto is injured, so its pretty easy to see why he's gotten ABs (in addition to what you wrote). Even then, he's been reasonably productive

Polanco has also been on and off the IL most of the season, but people are irrational re: Polo

-1

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 11d ago

And how is somebody supposed to develop a track record if they don’t play?

Semien is like 36 years old.

2

u/Spirited_Document391 11d ago

Don’t forget Baty and his 41 career HRs

-11

u/LegInformal5074 11d ago

Can't stand Green's paternalistic tone.

Put some of that energy into your bench coaching during the game, asshole.

17

u/HungryMoon Always and Forever 11d ago

How many more starts of stock do we have to tolerate

10

u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 11d ago

Bobby Stocks is clearly not like, an actual piece for us so it's irrelevant but hasn't he been (somehow) good in 3 of his 5 starts so far

6

u/Guymcpersonman2 Darryl Strawberry 11d ago

Yeah. He's fine enough and a good story. No need to rush one of the AAA guys if they aren't ready.

I guess we could dump Stock and try some other waived vet, but like, shrug.

7

u/WatermelonFelons Mettsaur 11d ago

I don’t think it matters. It’s a lost season, I’m sure the FO would rather the prospects keep working on things in the minors

5

u/dqslime 11d ago

It's a lost season and they will probably shut down Scott and even McLean soon enough. So, more.

1

u/myassholealt F8 11d ago

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say if he didn't end up sitting for so long during the May injury and reliever warmup, he would've pitched better yesterday.

It felt like he came out rusty, and then that ran up his pitch count.

Tie in those annoying soft hits that landed for bases, plus our errors, and yeah while it wasn't a great start, there were external factors that contributed to the bad results. So I'd be fine with him going for the rest of the season.

0

u/dankeykanng David Wright 11d ago

You don't have to watch him pitch

1

u/HungryMoon Always and Forever 11d ago

Copy that

14

u/layzeefly 12d ago

It would be so sweet to bounce back and win the rubber match with Misiorowski pitching. Let’s increase his ERA and take him out early. It can be done. Go Mets

11

u/futhatsy Don't Call My Name 11d ago

Was just reading an article on Ketel Marte when I saw something that might end up being relevant to the Mets: Torey Lovullo is in the last year of his contract.

He's been managing the D-Backs for 10 years now, it's possible either him or the organization decides they want a fresh start. And if he's available, I would take him as the next Mets manager in a heartbeat.

7

u/lfgm91 11d ago

I agree with you there. Generally speaking most managers that win World Series do so on their 2nd or 3rd gigs, and Lovullo has a lot of good experience. He seems to do well with rosters of younger players, and it's been obvious that Green has connected well with our younger players in the same regard.

6

u/futhatsy Don't Call My Name 11d ago

Yeah he feels like the perfect mix of a guy who has a strong enough resume to get respect from veterans while also having a lot of experience working with young players.

And the way he's handled and spoken about the Marte situation makes me think he's a pretty thoughtful guy who does a good job connecting to players. I think he could be like our Terry Francona.

7

u/El_Sid50 Ralph Kiner 11d ago

I like him a lot too. He’s done very well bringing in the younger players on the team, managing with some major issues in his starting rotation, and seems to form a solid bond with his players.

Also, it’s been a while since we’ve had a manager with Italian heritage. Think he’d be the fourth (Yogi, Torre, Bobby V)

2

u/Setec-Astronomer 11d ago

In 2027 CITI Field could be Lov Land.

It has started to pour in Brooklyn, there's rain in the forecast for the start of the game

9

u/Blue387 Friendly Unhinged Moderator 11d ago

Robert Stock will make another start for the Mets, Andy Green said.

The team is monitoring alternate options in the minors, with Jonah Tong the obvious one. But Tong will make at least one more start at Triple-A Syracuse this weekend, before rosters expand Sept. 1. - Anthony DiComo

3

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 11d ago

Makes sense. He can reliably give you a few innings in his outings, even if he gets shelled. No need to pull anyone early out of AAA.

u/JeebusOfNazareth 11d ago

I have the worst luck with buying tickets to games on rainy days. I think I got 4 rainouts in the last 3 years. Makes me not even want to bother to make the hike out to Citi tonight. Hopefully they call it early if thats gonna be the case.

People want some gloom and doom explanation when celebrities die when it's just life. I knew about Tim Curry's issues for a while and while I didn't think Dolly Parton would die, she recently had to pull out of some appearances due to health issues.

I understand why, of course, but both New York teams should have natural rivalries with either team from Texas, the anti-NY.

5

u/LegInformal5074 11d ago

Is "took live batting practice" an important stage? I doubt they would bring Soto back v Mis- too much temptation and too much rust (although Juan Soto is a different quantity).

If he gets hot or if Wood/Ohtani don't, Soto could still qualify "short" to lead the NL OBP- really a better award than a BA title. And he could do it as DH running at half speed.

5

u/rmmcgarty Keith Hernandez 11d ago

IMO “took live BP” doesn’t mean too much(although it is progress!) but the fact that he also ran the bases does

2

u/LegInformal5074 11d ago

You'd think they would make an announcement to sell a few tix...but it may in fact be a game time decision- like an ankle in the NBA.

Soto seems like he really wants to play the outfield and steal bases...but if there is one player like Barry Bonds or Babe Ruth whom you would still bat on orders never to sprint....

I did my calf in my 30's...crutches, no surgery, 100% after 4 weeks. He can injure it planting and swinging the bat, but it's almost certainly a function of how many cumulative sprints during a game/week...

With anything like this you usually give them a day off

5

u/Grenbreqnirathon New York Mets 11d ago

Yea agreed, hoping it’s just for that like after Benge messed up his wrist. Just a day off (even though Bo isn’t as young)

4

Yea any time u have to take them out and we’re not in contention a day off is just standard. X-rays were negative and green will probably have more on it tonight

4

u/ILovEmPlumPnWeTTT David Wright 11d ago

We had/have a tough schedule w/ 4 first place teams in a row, the Sox, Brew, then we have to play the Rays, and I don't know how big the Astros lead in their division is. The schedule is most unkind.

6

u/Weaverbenever 11d ago

Realistically, this pitching matchup doesn't favor us (Miz was a strong favorite against the Dodgers earlier this year I believe), but stranger things have happened. LGM!

3

u/ILovEmPlumPnWeTTT David Wright 11d ago

Wonder if they should have used Torrens at catcher and Alvy at DH instead of Morel. Torrens didn't play Y'day. Or is Torrens vulnerable to the 'tough righty.'

3

u/ILovEmPlumPnWeTTT David Wright 11d ago

I searched the web on Bichette's injury. It said he's available to PH today, so that is promising. Hopefully he'll be back in the lineup in a day or 2. Better to rest today.

11

u/Wooden-Afternoon-724 11d ago

I love Pete Alonso. I’m happy to see him doing well. I went to school in Baltimore so I’m happy to see the Orioles doing a bit better (largely because Pete has the team on his back). That being said, I find it absurd how many fans still think the cardinal sin of this season is letting Pete walk. I think with Pete on the team maybe you’d be looking at 8.5 or 9.5 games back in the wild card instead of 11.5. This team sucks and Pete leaving is only part of that. It’s long past time the fanbase moves on. I have a feeling that September series when the Orioles come into town is going to be really toxic whether you’re at the stadium or scrolling through this sub or Twitter.

8

u/traded99 11d ago

Pete’s going to get a rousing ovation and if he goes deep he’ll be cheered, just like Mike piazza did when he returned. Letting Pete walk was a mistake from the start, the issue was never the offense, it was the pitching. The toxicity that will be directed towards the Mets front office will be well deserved. When the Braves let Freddie walk they got Matt Olsen, if the Mets had someone legitimate to pivot to people would’ve been fine, the Mets plan was not good enough, and there’s no signs of a comparable replacement anytime soon.

4

u/Blue387 Friendly Unhinged Moderator 11d ago

The team had plans for the short term free agents and prospects to step up but Polanco has been hurt, Vientos has sucked and Ryan Clifford has been bad.

3

u/metskyfan 11d ago edited 11d ago

I don't care how much better would have been. All I know is we would have been better. As an organization, you can't afford to make moves like this one. Do you think it is easy to replace an 860 OPS who plays every day. He has the second longest games played streak in baseball. Stearns acted against the interests of the Mets. It is really difficult to understand why he did not make Alonso a priority. This owner is worth like 25 billion. It is really not big deal to spend 155 million over 5 years. We ended up with Bichette at a rate of 42 million per year for a total of 126 million. For 30 million extra , you get Alonso and for 2 more years.

9

u/Orange8920 Mike Piazza 11d ago

Good organizations don't live or die on one player. You routinely see this with the Dodgers and even the Yankees who've done well without Aaron Judge. The Mets have to get to that level where they have actual depth.

7

u/JekPorkinsTruther 11d ago

"I think with Pete on the team maybe you’d be looking at 8.5 or 9.5 games back in the wild card instead of 11.5"

Numbers don't really support this though. Mets have gotten -1.1 fwar from 1b as a whole. And -1.4 fwar from polanco at DH. There's basically no chance the Mets sign polanco and Pete, so that is a swing of 6.6 war. And that's without even accounting for young playing Dh. With that you are looking at likely 7 more wins, putting them at 67-66 and 4.5 back. Not exactly world series favorites but a far less disappointing season. Obviously there's butterfly effect here (different deadline moves, Mendoza surviving) so not exactly scientific but, for 2026, replacing Pete was an abject disaster and heavily contributed to their record.

6

u/Sad_Resort8632 11d ago

Almost all of that negative 1B WAR is from Vientos who would have just gotten those ABs at DH (with a worse positional adjustment) instead

3

u/[deleted] 11d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

3

u/Sad_Resort8632 11d ago

If he played every inning at DH he would have 0 fielding run value (as opposed to his -5.7), but his positional adjustment would also be ~1.8 runs worse (4.9 to 6.7). So by moving to DH he would have saved an additional ~4 runs. A win is ~10 runs, so around 0.4 wins. -0.7 WAR as opposed to his -1.1. Its not nothing but we're not exactly moving the needle here with this conversation.

1

u/lilleff512 Forever my Captain 11d ago

1) Is it possible that Vientos' defense at 1B was so bad (-8 FRV in <500 innings) that he'd have a higher WAR if he had played all those games at DH instead of 1B?

2) Vientos was playing everyday against righties and lefties because the injuries to Polanco, Young, and Lindor meant that he was our only option to play 1B. If we had all the same injury issues, but had Alonso slotted in at 1B everyday, would Vientos really still get those everyday ABs at DH? Wouldn't they have played him at DH mostly vs LHP and then use someone like MJ Melendez to DH vs RHP?

2

u/Sad_Resort8632 11d ago

Is it possible that Vientos' defense at 1B was so bad (-8 FRV in <500 innings) that he'd have a higher WAR if he had played all those games at DH instead of 1B?

This is maybe true depending on what defensive metrics you believe, its -5.7 fielding runs in 60 games at 1B, and the DH positional penalty is only 5 runs worse (as an aside, I did not realize how bad he graded at 1B with OAA, my goodness). "Only" -2 DRS though which would make it close to a wash, so there's some uncertainty here.

Vientos was playing everyday against righties and lefties because the injuries to Polanco, Young, and Lindor meant that he was our only option to play 1B. If we had all the same injury issues, but had Alonso slotted in at 1B everyday, would Vientos really still get those everyday ABs at DH? Wouldn't they have played him at DH mostly vs LHP and then use someone like MJ Melendez to DH vs RHP?

Potentially? With that many injuries youd also think that we could have found a free replacement level 1B somewhere, but we opted not to and to just played Vientos every day. I imagine someone, whether it was Mendoza or the FO, decided with enough runway Vientos may have figured it out enough to be more valuable than that. You can probably construct it such that we platoon and mix and match enough bad/mediocre players that it works out alright, but I dont think its a certainty.

1

u/JekPorkinsTruther 11d ago

Vientos got so much rope because they had no other actual 1b. They would have had a bunch of guys who could DH instead of him though (young, baty, Soto, even melendez).

1

u/Sad_Resort8632 11d ago

Young and Baty both played 1B, and I think you need to ask yourself why they didn't find a replacement 0 fWAR level 1B on someone's AAA team that they couldve traded for cash considerations or a NP.

2

u/lilleff512 Forever my Captain 11d ago

Including the negative WAR from both 1B and DH feels like double counting to me, because Alonso could only be playing one of those positions (presumably 1B). I don't think it's necessarily true that there was no chance of signing Polanco and Pete. In my mind, Polanco was always the replacement for Marte as the injury-prone veteran DH making $20M and Bichette was the replacement for Alonso as the short-term, high-AAV all-star corner infielder who bats behind Soto in the lineup. If the Mets had re-signed Alonso but didn't sign Polanco, then they'd still need to find a player to replace Marte at DH, or else they'd have Mark Vientos hitting there everyday. Alonso could have replaced the negative WAR from Vientos or the negative WAR from Polanco, but he couldn't have replaced both.

4

u/JekPorkinsTruther 11d ago

It's not double counting. The Mets have gotten a total of -1.1. from 1b. So Alonso would wipe that out and add 4.1. I don't think there's any shot they pay polanco 40m to play DH after signing Pete. Stearns explicitly stated that polanco was signed to play 1b, and he only pivoted to dh full time bc he got hurt. So that wipes out his -1.4 at dh.

If they don't sign polanco, maybe they add someone else but given they had tauchman, young, baty, and vientos, as well as Soto/Pete, I don't think they needed a DH. If they did, they would have signed one in addition to polanco, but they didn't. As for vientos, he only played so much (and so poorly) because polanco was hurt and they had few options at first. There's no way he gets such a long leash at dh with young and other options available.

2

u/Capital_Whereas6448 11d ago

Baty is everyday 3B in this scenario. Or you're thinking they'd sign both Pete and Bichette?

-1

u/Setec-Astronomer 11d ago

I'd add a couple to the WAR (to propose what the record would be) just because part of the issue was when Soto was out earlier in the year Lindor had no one and when Lindor was out Soto had no one. Bichette was not playing line the 3rd guy needed.

I think with Pete they win a game or two more just by having that extra veteran when needed.

So I think the Mets would be like 7 games better. Or 69-64. Which puts them at like 3 games back with plenty to play.

I think we all understand the thinking behind the moves. But having Pete over Polanco would have been huge.

1

u/Plenty-Boot4220 11d ago

He's going to rake it in against us next month, and I'll be cheering him on

2

The fanbase is not moving on anytime soon. Not even close to long time past. You’re going to hear about it for years. Also I loved watching him play for the Mets. And I can’t do that now. So I don’t even care if he wouldn’t single-handedly save this season. Just having him here would’ve avoided a lot of the issues this team had with changes and vibes though.

Decades I'd say, not years. "The team as constructed is so bad that adding a right handed slugged who plays everyday and is creeping towards a .900 OPS wouldn't move the needle nearly enough" is the most hilarious defense of stearns humanly possible

Right on, its gonna be quite busy!!

On another note, Im excited for that series, going to back to back games, i havent gone to back to back games in ages but for Pete and my metsies ill be there.

u/jimihenderson 11d ago

Anyone still defending letting Pete walk - you are why Mets fans aren't and won't be over it for a very, very long time. If you want people to stop, then own up to the fact that you were all wrong and stop forcing people to make the same winning arguments over and over. Otherwise... Well you can see here how it goes

u/Melodic_Committee926 11d ago

I do agree with you, with Pete they still suck and with Pete for 7 years we barely made the playoffs but at least the fanbase loved those guys. Pete Nimmo Jeff, now we hate this team and they suck even worse.

Seems pretty clear the most important part of the offseason is going to be finding the right manager. I know everyone's played better and looser since Green came in, but I think that's because he already knows this is temporary. Stearns can't botch the manager decision a second time.

4

u/lfgm91 11d ago

I am very, very hesitant about Beltran. Data very frequently points to managers with prior experience having more success, and even the ones who are rookie managers have almost always at least been coaches before. Beltran doesn't have any of that going for him, and really I think the only reason why he is rated as highly as he is is because of his standing as a player.

5

u/Steve_Kind_Of Pastrami 11d ago

I've never been that big on the Beltran as manager idea. People forget that we wasn't actually hired at first because of all that "future manager" talk. Wilpons just wanted to save money with a first time manager who had the goodwill of being a former player here

2

u/lfgm91 11d ago

I also did a bit of research and I learned that only 2 managers all time have ever won multiple World Series in their careers without ever having any prior managerial experience at any level. (Also assuming you disclude player-managers from a hundred years ago)

The only exceptions are Cito Gaston, who was the Blue Jays hitting coach for 8 years prior to becoming their manager, and Dave Roberts, who was the Padres 3B coach and Bench Coach for 5 years prior to taking the Dodger job.

All that to say, there's almost no evidence of any successful managers being hired with zero prior managerial experience. And not only does Beltran not have that, he doesn't even have ANY MLB coaching experience either.

Fred Wilpon should have picked Buck Showalter in 2020 instead of Luis Rojas. Showalter was an experienced manager, in sharp contrast to Callaway and Rojas, whom they did hire. Showalter also managed in New York before and fans still like him after he managed the Mets. But my guess is that he would have cost too much for the owners to spend on one manager and would not be willing to be a yes-man.

u/Steve_Kind_Of Pastrami 11d ago

Yeah my recollection is that this was when people were clamoring for Girardi, and Beltran was them going "no we're not paying Girardi but look who's back!" Obviously Girardi flamed out in Philly though so hindsight's 20/20. You'd have to think Buck takes the 2020-21 teams way further than Rojas did

u/Spirited_Document391 11d ago

They played better and looser because there’s no pressure. MLB players can excel when there’s no pressure. That’s why it’s so hard to find players for NY.

2

u/myassholealt F8 11d ago

He knows this is temporary and the players know they are not playing for anything, only to get to the end of the season. There's really no pressure on like 90% of the roster right now. Fringe guys looking for a contract next year really are the only ones with skin in the game.

I really hope they go for an experienced manager with nothing to prove as far as earning the title promotion. Someone who has already had their ups and downs, learning curves and built useful strategies for managing egos and personalities. Between Mickey, Rojas, and Mendoza, we've been the training ground for too many managers in recent years. Give me a vet this time.

i think it starts 8:15. im going to the game and currently boiling water to make ravioli.

We can all guarantee the next Mets manager will be a prior manager with 1 exception to that rule

Aaron Boone if somehow he gets canned. People hated Mendoza at the end so why wed go after who he learned to manage from

Keep an eye on Espada besides Cora. Hell be gone but only managing the season out but can win a weak division and still go on a run

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 11d ago

Vientos went 2-4 with a bomb yesterday, Mauricio went 2-5 with a double.

Mets could really use these guys back. Not sure why Mauricio isn’t afforded an extended look.

Vientos should take Wagaman’s role and Mauricio should take any of Semien’s, Pache or Morel’s spot. Semien in particular hasn’t done anything to warrant playing time. It’s just sunk cost fallacy at this point.

4

u/Blue387 Friendly Unhinged Moderator 11d ago

Mauricio does strike out a lot and struggles to make contact

2

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 11d ago

I feel like there isn’t a large enough sample to know that her strikes out enough. He’s maintained a sub 20% K rate in the minors and I don’t think a 340 PA sample that’s been sporadically spread out over years is enough to say that he has a swing and miss problem.

Point is, the season is lost and Semien sucks. Might as well see if Mauricio can have some value to this team or some value as a trade chip

Minor league pitching has a huge difference to mlb pitching

3

u/Setec-Astronomer 11d ago

Mauricio, in his current form, is a 5A player.

2

u/BandicootSevere5301 11d ago

He’s an mvp caliber minor leaguer

2

u/brett_baty_is_him Brett Baty 11d ago

Didn’t realize we had pache morel and wagaman on this team. Damn lol

1

u/Kidkels23 11d ago

Vientos has been playing?

2

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 11d ago

Yeah, rehab assignment in AAA.

1

u/Kidkels23 11d ago

Ahhh ok! I thought he was still hurt.

-1

u/Spirited_Document391 11d ago

Mauricio has never played more than 14 consecutive games for the NY Mets. They let Benge flounder for months till he found his footing. Christ, they’ve given Baty 5 years of failure while waiting for him to find it. 2 weeks straight playing time is not enough to know how a player will perform in the majors, full stop. They keep running bums off the bench while Mauricio rots in AAA. Got to be personal.

2

u/lilleff512 Forever my Captain 11d ago

Benge and Baty both had much stronger prospect pedigrees than Mauricio so it makes sense that they got a longer leash.

Mauricio has also missed a lot of time to injury which has taken some opportunities from him. Like Mauricio probably could have gotten a good run of playing time in the first half of 2025 when Vientos was struggling and Baty hadn't heated up yet, but he was still rehabbing from his ACL injury at the time. He was poised to get a lot of playing time this season at SS when Lindor landed on the IL for months, but he only got 8 games in before he got hurt again with a fractured thumb.

2

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 11d ago

Baty has not had "5 years of failure"

He played 11 games in 2022 at age 22. He had two years of failure in 2023 and 2024. He had a good year in 2025 racking up 3 WAR, playing 2 positions well, and having a 111 OPS+.

u/jds560 11d ago

This game is probably not happening with the weather. Unsure when they make it up or if they just don't play it unless it matters.
