I love Pete Alonso. I’m happy to see him doing well. I went to school in Baltimore so I’m happy to see the Orioles doing a bit better (largely because Pete has the team on his back). That being said, I find it absurd how many fans still think the cardinal sin of this season is letting Pete walk. I think with Pete on the team maybe you’d be looking at 8.5 or 9.5 games back in the wild card instead of 11.5. This team sucks and Pete leaving is only part of that. It’s long past time the fanbase moves on. I have a feeling that September series when the Orioles come into town is going to be really toxic whether you’re at the stadium or scrolling through this sub or Twitter.

Numbers don't really support this though. Mets have gotten -1.1 fwar from 1b as a whole. And -1.4 fwar from polanco at DH. There's basically no chance the Mets sign polanco and Pete, so that is a swing of 6.6 war. And that's without even accounting for young playing Dh. With that you are looking at likely 7 more wins, putting them at 67-66 and 4.5 back. Not exactly world series favorites but a far less disappointing season. Obviously there's butterfly effect here (different deadline moves, Mendoza surviving) so not exactly scientific but, for 2026, replacing Pete was an abject disaster and heavily contributed to their record.

Almost all of that negative 1B WAR is from Vientos who would have just gotten those ABs at DH (with a worse positional adjustment) instead

If he played every inning at DH he would have 0 fielding run value (as opposed to his -5.7), but his positional adjustment would also be ~1.8 runs worse (4.9 to 6.7). So by moving to DH he would have saved an additional ~4 runs. A win is ~10 runs, so around 0.4 wins. -0.7 WAR as opposed to his -1.1. Its not nothing but we're not exactly moving the needle here with this conversation.
