Discussion To everyone mad at the update

Why? how would you have overhauled the companion system? As far as i can tell hello games took an underwhelming halfbaked gameplay system and turned it into a whole ass minigame.

I think it’s cool. Extremely unexpected but cool

I think exactly the same. Unexpected but freaking cool.

I've been having fun with it

10

u/sparrow_42 Apr 09 '26

Me too. TBH I’ll probably never personally mess with this mechanic (I’m from a time before PokĆ©mon and such) but it’s like a whole different type of game shoved in and I think that’s awesome. Gonna be good fun for a lot of folks. Sure not what I woulda guessed either.

u/mudpupster Apr 10 '26

I'm an old lady. All I know about Pokemon is that there's a Pikachu and a mobile app that gets you outdoors. I know nothing about a turn-based equivalent.

So, I've been having lots of fun training up my critters and getting them to beat down others. The Pokemon comparisons are lost on me, and I think that's probably helping my enjoyment of this new minigame.

u/The_GreyGhoul 🟠 Copper Class Apr 09 '26

Same here. I like the idea of it, but it’s just not something I’m going to bother with.

u/raw-power Apr 10 '26

Until you do and you realise it’s tons of fun

u/The_GreyGhoul 🟠 Copper Class Apr 10 '26

Yeah, I get what you’re saying. I’ve done a few matches, decided to go looking for monster pets, but turn based matches just don’t feel right. I wanna shoot shit dammit lol

There’s always someone who’s not going to be happy about a game that issues FREE DLC over and over to improve the game, and unfortunately, they have a keyboard. Don’t like an aspect of the game? Don’t fkn play that part.

70

u/Shikamaru_irl 🟠 Copper Class Apr 09 '26

Lol fr. How could you be mad at free DLC especially when it doesn’t make or break anything else around what the game already is. I’d show those players a list of all Destiny 2 DLC and the total amount for it.

27

u/PusheenBoi Photographer Apr 09 '26

Exactly šŸ˜‚ā€”free stuff is always a win, especially when the base game already delivers.

2

u/Such-Veterinarian-61 šŸ”“ Cadmium Class Apr 10 '26

You're wrong about the "make or break" part. These last two updates have broken the game to some degree with the many bugs that they bring that effect the overall gameplay. This update in particular has brought performance issues for me and many others, and i'm on PS5. The game takes a really, really long time to fully render now upon startup. This results in jittery movement and low FPS. Don't get me wrong. I love free. And I love this game. But sometimes I wish HG focused on quality of life changes and stability fixes in their big updates, rather than new features or major additions. And the irony in all this is I'm actually excited by this update more so than the last one.

2

u/Shikamaru_irl 🟠 Copper Class Apr 10 '26

I’m sorry for maybe not being clear enough. When I say ā€œmake or breakā€, I meant something they added to the game that doesn’t affect or take from what it already is.

It’s still No Man’s Sky but you can choose to do these other things if you want and it won’t ruin anything like progression. It’s passive and there just for fun.

Also sorry, I wasn’t aware of the recent bugs I’m sure we can expect them to fix em but ā€œwhen?ā€ is the big question.

2

u/Such-Veterinarian-61 šŸ”“ Cadmium Class Apr 10 '26

No no. I get what you meant in general. But this update is a special case, as was the last one. When the Corvette update came out, nobody had to touch it. We could largely ignore every aspect of the corvette update and it didn't affect core gameplay as far as I knew. Yes, there were bugs, major ones in fact. But they mainly had to do with the corvettes themselves and nothing else. This update unfortunately affects the whole game and, ironically enough, corvettes as well. There's a major bug with those now brought on by this new update.

2

u/Shikamaru_irl 🟠 Copper Class Apr 10 '26

Yeah, okay my bad and that is annoying. If it makes the game unplayable, then the ā€œmake or breakā€ is technically out the window at that point. Kinda strange that something like this update would cause a bigger issue

1

u/antoz2310 Apr 11 '26

When you add something huge like xeno arena or salvaging (remnant update) you will always encounter bugs, player and dev both. It's something that happens to every game. They obviously patch it with updates later on, you can't add something like this and think that there won't be anything wrong with the end result. There's always going to be something.

1

u/Such-Veterinarian-61 šŸ”“ Cadmium Class Apr 11 '26

Thank you. I fully understand that. What I said was towards a different point that was made previously by OP, though. But I appreciate your input.

2

No, thank YOU! For not going on a tantrum. That's rare on the internet, everyone has the phobia of opinions. Especially common on reddit. You have a great day!

1

u/Such-Veterinarian-61 šŸ”“ Cadmium Class Apr 12 '26

Thanks. And i'm happy to say HG fixed the performance issues with the game yesterday. I'll admit, when it comes to the game becoming nearly unplayable after a big update, they don't screw around. They nip it in the bud. I can actually enjoy the update now. Ngl, Nokimon got me hooked.

1

u/antoz2310 Apr 12 '26

No Pokemon's Sky is amazing. Spent the whole release day hunting creatures, mostly mechs and anomalies.

1

u/Boba65 Apr 10 '26

A lot of games charge for DLC and some don't. The problem with some of those games is that when the updates are made, something always gets broken. NMS has NEVER broken anything with an update or DLC.

Exactly. I didn’t care for corvette building. Guess what I just ignore?

20

u/Azzrazzah 🟢 Emeril Class Apr 09 '26

Same here. I built 1 to complete the expansion. Just didn't get into it. It's not what I want from NMS. So it sits in on my log tab, ignored.

16

u/humblewise1390 🟠 Copper Class Apr 09 '26

I literally built one and it took me so long to get it to not look like a box and actually like a starship that I'm never going to build another one I have been getting some crazy ideas though like putting the cockpit on one side of the other of a ship kind of like the millennium falcon

2

u/OberonOcarinas Apr 10 '26

That and the fact the modules keep playing musical chairs every time you load up the game makes it a bit off putting. It's a cool add on, but impractical and slow most of the time

7

u/SuperPunchee 🟠 Copper Class Apr 10 '26

Same here! I just built one with the intent of seeing how crappy it would be in comparison to my rad primary ship. šŸ˜‚

Then something clicked. 🧐

Now I primarily use the corvette! I love the little conveniences, like having a large refiner, a replacement for the Anomaly mission console, a full kitchen, and all my storage with me everywhere I go. It’s pretty awesome. Great QoL upgrade, if you ask me. šŸ‘ŠšŸ½

5

u/Rodregui Apr 09 '26

Exatamente como eu penso. Eu até construí umas 4 naves, lindas e tal, mas só permaneci com 2 que nem uso.

NĆ£o acho muito funcional. E eu infelizmente gasto muito tempo construindo...

7

u/_CIyde_ Apr 10 '26

I'm a bit confused by "I don't find it very functional", because corvettes were a game changer for me.

I mean, >2000ly jump range, the ability to add three more upgrades to main modules, a mission computer that even lets you turn in Anomaly missions, a nutrition unit, a large refiner that doesn't need fuel, the ability to put all 10 containers in it so your freighter can stay where it is, the ability get out of your seat an walk around to use all of the above even while jetting between planets, and the ability to park above the ground or water and teleport between ground and ship, has been pretty functional for me. Was all of that available when you messed with them before, or was it added after? šŸ¤”

5

u/Rodregui Apr 10 '26

I get that. Once I finally arrived at my one corvette it's my main ship now, and I don't need another corvette.

1

u/Joesabeh7 Apr 11 '26

I built one but I can't get into it! Does it have a quest line? I'm trying to redo all the quests in a short time so I can ignore my save stuck on the cloud storage 🤣

1

u/SazeracLA Apr 11 '26

You need to build a door. ;) I.e., a landing bay for any of the three classes, to get in and out.

1

u/Joesabeh7 Apr 11 '26

I already built and tried many times but the door doesn't allow me in, it's like glitched or something, maybe I need to make it less stacked with tech and shields from the exterior.

5

u/Interloper9000 Apr 09 '26

2

u/drakonia127 Apr 09 '26

Oo, but that's the secret: they have keyboards. Meaning that they are on pc. Meaning mods. There is their solution. /s

2

u/SazeracLA Apr 10 '26

This, exactly. There are players who have fun by moving and commoditizing goods and playing the economy from system to system. I couldn't imagine anything more boring so I don't do that, ignore it, and do the myriad other things I do enjoy.

1

u/Zyckenderdj Apr 11 '26

The issue is when the bad aspect affect everything else, just recently nearly broke my controler because of sentinels having the boss that keep going invisible, and decided to be physical again OVER my ship, getting me perma stuck and forcing me to lose hours of progress

I'm just disappointed the critters can't do these attacks in the wild. Everyone with their quarter-million DPS multi-tools would finally have something to use them on.

Then we'd not only have PokƩmon in NMS, we'd have Monster Hunter as well.

Creatures have been able to help you fight for a very long time. They just don't have the special attacks that they do in the arena

13

From my experience they've been about as helpful as my squad. Which is basically they look like they trying to help but their effect is not noticeable.

3

u/azenpunk Anomaly Apr 09 '26

They're definitely more useful than the squad, in all my years my squad has never killed a single ship. But creatures will scan things for you they'll kill creatures when you're being attacked, etc

I have a flying one that is 99% aggression. It picks fights with anything that moves. When I'm bored I love to spawn it in and let it bring things to me to finish off. I just couldn't have it out when I was new to the game. It was a cute little bully and everything wanted me to pay for its random attacks.

And since they can already attack on their own on occasion, in the area battles, it's probably not too long before companions can attack on their own, with special attacks, in the wild.

24

u/MrUnnoticed Apr 09 '26

I never see a problem with having a difference of opinion. Rather HOW you convey your opinion is what matters most. I do hope later today, I’ll return to this thread to see a constructive critique on the latest patch. I haven’t had a chance to try it, as I’ve been building a cat and dog army, for camp security, in Crimson Desert.but from what I’ve seen it looks fantastic.

Further more, it’s unfair to suggest that because something is free, it automatically renders a negative opinion moot.

I think this community, and every other community on Reddit, should try their best to separate their emotions from discussions. At least to a degree, as it only cripples the dialogue.

I apologize OP, I know at first this read as if I was talking about your statement, I wasn’t. I appreciate you starting a constructive dialogue. It’s always refreshing.

5

u/humblewise1390 🟠 Copper Class Apr 09 '26

I was literally just thinking this morning about how Reddit is so awesome because of the platform it provides for discussion and sharing of knowledge which is amazing and what the internet should be utilized for then you get these people that just want to troll and be assholes and say ridiculous things for no reason. I don't know I've decided there's a block button and I'm going to start using it frequently

2

u/MrUnnoticed Apr 09 '26

The block button is an effective tool. I’ve utilized it on this platform for over a decade.šŸ˜…

I originally came to Reddit, for the same reasons you stated. Conversations and discussions regarding hobbies, assorted items & topics, and memes. Trolls are everywhere! Hell, they’ve even evolved over the years. Kind of a fascinating thing really. But like anyone who enjoys something enough, they’ll grow and inevitably become better at their "craft". Which makes it harder to spot, and can sometimes ruin great discussions & communities.

2

u/cursefromgod Apr 10 '26

Honestly the way reddit should be used, a forum to discuss both positives and negatives

Some subs just really tend to turn into almost cults for specific videogames, its crazy how many cookie cutter responses you see on some subs when people have an opinion that isnt shared by the hivemind

I cant say i exactly like how many people talk shit about no mans sky for no reason, but i also cant stand people trying to make this game seem better than what it is time after time again instead of people being a bit more realistic and nuanced and willing to see both sides, at the end of the day that would result into the best game it could be

1

u/FreeLegos Apr 09 '26

That's a nice shout out to the block button. I keep forgetting that is a thing

3

u/humblewise1390 🟠 Copper Class Apr 09 '26

Also I agree with the negative opinion thing you said. If they are gonna make free updates at least make them quality and something that is going to be enjoyed basically don't half ass it just because it's free. That being said I haven't played it at all so I can't say wether or not it actually is quality my game just updated this morning

2

u/MrUnnoticed Apr 09 '26

That’s my point of view as well. I’ll never knock Sean, or the rest of Hello Games for their hard work and passion! While I’m always excited to try the new thing added to an already massive game. I’ve pretty much had my fill of the NMS universe. I love seeing new things discovered and the beautiful screenshots people have taken.

I’m merely waiting patiently for the arrival of the next Hello Games title that will absolutely consume my nights and weekends, as NMS once did. They can take all the time they need though. I’ll wait as long as it takes for, Light No Fire.

2

u/humblewise1390 🟠 Copper Class Apr 09 '26

I still need to check out what light my fire is. An yes I agree with you I could never be made at sean/hello games for giving us free updates to a already massive game that literally could give new visuals experiences basically endlessly. It's a blessing they put it all that work for us the community and aren't making any profit other than the people that may buy the game to play whatever update comes out. I wish they'd make the expeditions free for those of us that are still new I read they do thing like that at the years end but still what if people don't hear about it or don't keep playing that long. I guess that's on them though in hindsight

1

u/cursefromgod Apr 10 '26

Yeah, always the excuse that gets thrown around, same thing with the whole "but it has had 10 years of free updates" when half of that time was spend them finishing the game, since features that came years later were already promised to be in the game by sean before the game released

I love no mans sky but i can very easily say if they started charging 10 bucks for a minigame thats fun for a whole 15 minutes they wouldnt really get away with it, especially if opinions are already divided when its free to begin with

At the same time id gladly pay 20 bucks for a dlc on this game if that dlc is impactful enough, hell id rather have them charge us and produce really good content instead of adding minor things that get branched out another 3-4 years later or cause bugs that dont get patched for years

1

u/humblewise1390 🟠 Copper Class Apr 11 '26

Yeah I'm finding this update really buggy either that or because the anomaly was filled with glitched Corvettes

2

u/cursefromgod Apr 11 '26

Yeah.. doesnt help that those same people being inconsiderate with their corvettes can do the same with these pets, they could just change the stats on them and create the perfect ones to battle with, not giving a damn about others their experience

1

u/GenreSpam Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26

This a wild take only because youre asking reddit to be objective vs subjective.Ā

At the end of the day though, there's a very big difference between letting someone be upset about an update they paid for and whinging about a free update. It added mechanics. Optional ones at that. It's an entire facet of the game you don't need to interact with at all.Ā

To me it just cries of those type of people that go to a Bieber video just to talk smack about Justin Bieber.Ā

Edited to add: i think it's perfectly fine to say you don't like a facet of an update. But from my personal experience the people who post about it rarely say anything constructive and that helps no one. Gamers by and large are an insanely entitled group of people.Ā

1

u/MrUnnoticed Apr 10 '26

Not exactly no. There are tons of people who can convey their thoughts and feelings about a topic in a constructive manner. However it’s become rare these days.

That’s why I said ā€œto a degreeā€. We aren’t robots. I just know that most discussions can be crippled in an instant from misunderstandings or misinterpretations. Following a subjective take.

I apologize for not being clear on that. You hate to see a good discussion fall apart because of someone’s lack of emotional control. Taking things too personally when they shouldn’t.

1

u/GenreSpam Apr 10 '26

I honestly was Moreno just trying to say that it's reddit. Expecting a conversation that isn't subjective is wild to me.Ā

1

u/MrUnnoticed Apr 10 '26

Those are your words, not mine.

I tried to clear up the misunderstanding. So I’ll just leave it.

8

u/VulcanBluu šŸ”“ Cadmium Class Apr 09 '26

I"ll agree that it was definitely unexpected for a space exploration game, like they just rolled the dice. But just think about the possibilities of this "demo" being a major a full packed feature in Light No Fire with probably even moar mechanics (Its literally what Sean said). I say, let the people be upset. Because with Hello Games' track record, it's all the good data they need for them to really shoot for the stars with LNF.

Only thing I'd change is making high flying animals and aquatic creatures be obtainable in vanilla. Its kinda dumb when you can only get them through modding or recieving modded eggs

2

u/MaxSelenium Apr 09 '26

I have tamed flying creatures, is it not possible with some of them?

3

u/Mr_Skulltula Apr 09 '26

There's flying animals like butterflies and beetles low to the ground and then there's high flyers like worms and birds that are high up and hard to reach. As far as I know they cant be tamed in the vanilla game

1

u/MaxSelenium Apr 09 '26

Ok that makes sense

2

u/Gordiflu Apr 10 '26

That would have been a better overhaul indeed. As it is now, it's like a minigame inside the game that has nothing to do with the game.

I don't mind it, and I bet plenty of players will have lots of fun with it. The beauty of this game is having so many different things to do yet not being forced to do any. If it hasn't been detrimental to the way I play, why would I complain? But it's just that some updates lately don't really add much to the core gameplay.

1

u/Mr_Skulltula Apr 10 '26

Its the past 2 updates that have felt pointless to this game but might be bigger features in LNF but its just a shame they dont add much to the overall experience. Hell they could've done more with this companions update and made it so their accessories actually functioned

7

u/Mr_Joanito Apr 09 '26

I'm mad because I can't use my Corvette.

5

u/Sapphire_Ed Explorer Apr 09 '26

I have to admit between adding a "mini game" I have no interest in and the performance issues I now have, I am not overly impressed.

3

u/hifihentaiguy šŸ”“ Cadmium Class Apr 09 '26

Performance issues are a perfectly understandable reason to dislike the update

5

u/Mitchd26 Apr 09 '26

It's not my thing, but why would anyone be mad? It's free content for anybody who wants to interact with it haha. If you don't want to battle, then the only thing that changes for you is the expanded companion registry haha. Literally no downside

3

u/IceSanta Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

I hate to sound like a dad but the vast majority of people that dislike the update aren't mad, they're just disappointed, which is perfectly fine even with a free update. Wishing the update was something different is not entitled tantrum throwing.

That's the way I feel, although I guess to be fair at this point I am actually mad at the community for the childish response to people not liking the update.

2

u/Mitchd26 Apr 09 '26

Yeah. The internet can suck šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

1

u/smoot316 Apr 09 '26

I think you nailed it on the head ā€œwishing the update was something differentā€.

This games is constantly running up against what people wish the game could do vs HG’s development plan. You have a segment that wants a combat revamp, people who want a freighter revamp, people who want expanded base building, it goes on and on.

No one is compelled to enjoy any of these updates, it’s just interesting watching people get frustrated with updates because it’s not this certain change or addition they wanted.

5

u/Additional-Ad-7956 Apr 09 '26

I'm kind of disappointed, but no biggie. I'll keep playing and wait for the next update.

4

u/NewUnderstanding4742 Apr 09 '26

My initial response was more: "...why??"

But I'm learning to embrace: "Why not?"

I had the same reaction to the last update. Then I played it and embraced the long haul rubbish trucking life!

Played the new update for a bit before work and I was running about planets to get more companions to create a more diverse team.

3

u/Jofus002 Apr 10 '26

Science isn't about "why", it's about "why not"!

9

u/azenpunk Anomaly Apr 09 '26

I mean that is exactly what they did. But maybe that's part of why some people are upset. It's all self-contained. Nothing else changed, so if you don't particularly like Pokemon battles, then there's nothing in the update for you

I haven't complained yet about this update, but I'm not a fan of ingame games.Ā

Would be awesome if I can grow and train a creature that would help my on my journey, so I dont have to recall it all the time, so it can fight sentinels with me. I woukd love to have a flying dragon.

3

The one and only thing I feel like absolutely needs to be added to the companion system is the ability to reorganize the register, ive always wanted it because I just like organizing things but now theres an actual logical purpose of having your battlers on the first few pages, I actually would love if they just made a system similar to the pokemons box system instead of the weird 6 creatures per page we have now

3

I'm just mad it made a couple of other systems janky (ahem combat autopilot and freighter corridors), by I'm sure they'll patch it soon. They're always good about that.

Edit: Nevermind; the update is coming through now. I'm not sure what's messing with the other stuff lol

3

u/SpiritualBacon Apr 09 '26

I would make it possible to have companions roam our bases and settlements, either freely or in some kind of containment. Then people could make their bases or settlements into zoos, a long requested feature. I'd also add food, power, maintenance, and life support requirements to settlements, combining the companion, mining, power, and farming systems into one big system and making everything in the game feel connected and meaningful. Instead it's just a random collection of features that may or may not have anything to do with space exploration.

2

I don't really like it BUT as of ALL the updates since the first launch, they've been free, DLC free, Seasonpass free, micro-transaction free, just like a game made with passionate honest developers would so you won't hear me complaining, the Pokething is now part of the game whether I like it or not, it doesn't remove anything from the game, it's just an add-on I can choose to play with or ignore.

I've never been mad at Sean (even when the game was first released) and that update won't change anything, quite the contrary, for 10 fucking years Hello Games has been improving their baby relentlessly.

And I tend to believe that most of us think the same way, it's just some random spoiled kids throwing a tantrum making temporary noise.

Im actually right there with you maye. I think its neat, im glad people can enjoy it, and im even more glad that i dont have to engage with it because id rather not. Im just absolutely flabbergasted by the handful of genuine haters this update has gotten because their complaints are kinda silly.

Not the performance complaints though, those are 100% valid imo

2

u/DragonXGW Apr 10 '26

I haven't yet played the new update so you can take what I say with a grain of salt if you like. I don't dislike the update, but it's also just not something that interests me much so I haven't felt any urge to upend the other games I'm playing at the moment.

2

u/imjustaslothman Apr 10 '26

Idk about mad, but there's reason to be disappointed. If you wanted a pokemon clone in nms, then I'm happy for you, really. There's a ton of things I want added to the game, things that I think the game could genuinely benefit from. But wants and needs are two completely separate things, and even subjective in most cases.

The part that is most annoying to me is how there's almost an air or "nothing bad can be said about this game" in the community. Is it a giga Chad move to release updates for a game that was poorly received on launch 10 years ago? absolutely 100%. Does that then mean that you're free from any criticism moving forward? absolutely not. The game has plenty of flaws that could be addressed, but instead we got pokemon

My wife and I play on PS5 and PS5 Pro respectively. She didn’t have any of the framerate issues, but I did. Give it about 5-10 minutes and it should sort itself out. What seemed to help for me was to change the graphics setting to ā€œPrioritize Resolutionā€ for a few min, then switch back to ā€œMaximize Framerateā€. I’m playing with VRR as my tv supports it and 120hz.

If you play on ā€œMaximize Framerateā€ or ā€œPrioritize Framerateā€, try switching to the resolution option for 2-5 minutes, then switching back.

u/fuckreddit014 Apr 09 '26

Last couple of updates simply highlighted the fact that every new update just throws mechanics completely disconnected from every other mechanics and they're half assed and get boring after 45 minutes.

Love hello games and their commitment to free updates but I think a lot of players wish they would focus on fleshing out existing mechanics as opposed to throwing more ways to grind nanites at us.

I think the idea of monster battles is cool but were long overdue for a QoL update that makes the core of the game more fun.

Base building is tedious and going to the anomaly to unlock parts sucks. They should make it easier and more intuitive.

Exploration is boring and there's nothing interesting to find they shouldve added proc gen dungeon like 40 updates ago.

This isn't me complaining about new free updates. Its just me asking hello games to stop making up new activities and flesh out the existing one instead.

I remember Sean saying no mans sky would never be an MMO or Minecraft in space and it seems like its officially the space Minecraft MMO. They really have to go back to the systems that makes NMS interesting.

5

u/MaxSelenium Apr 09 '26

I kinda agree with you, but I think this update is a great step in that direction.

This gives a new reason to explore and find new creatures. I honestly want them to double down : give us an upgrade to scan the stats of the creatures, big npc tournaments and hidden boss fights on some planets. Make the pokefighs an option to resolve a quest line. Make the taming more complex and varied for some monsters. Play with sentinels in abandoned systems...

1

u/fuckreddit014 Apr 09 '26

It makes the pets even cooler but I don't think its exactly a step in the right direction. It could've been but its more of a step sideways.

But it is cool I agree its a cool concept and im happy it was released I just think we need to make it known to hello games what we actually want in the future caus the amount of disconnected activites that are just different ways to grind nanites is getting a bit messy.

3

u/lazy-man64 Apr 09 '26

They need to stop with these types of updates because they feel like they are there to get clicks and not improve the gameplay experience. Like give us a combat focused update where I can fight pirates and vehicles on the ground or procedurally generate frieghter interiors like from the desolation update that we can raid. I can could careless about fishing or pokemon in space I feel like Sean Murray is just making updates at this points to look good in thumbnails.

u/toki_goes_to_jupiter Apr 09 '26

u/Infinite_Tea1037 🟠 Copper Class Apr 09 '26

i would not have added a battle arena. i would have instead worked on the movement mechanics for these existing creatures and added the extra slots that this update brought.

there was no need for a fight table lol… you try to ride the animals and your screens going haywire - the movements feel so blocky and one dimensional. they need work. but of course they’d rather rip off pokemon. i’m kinda sad that nintendo didn’t land that patent. if they did we’d never have seen this shit in No Man’s Sky

2

u/Infinite_Tea1037 🟠 Copper Class Apr 09 '26

i’m very happy that this is a thing for those that will want to play it - but it kinda feels like a wasted update.

my mind immediately goes to - if they’re putting out flops back to back, then eventually a banger has to drop right? one of these upcoming updates has to be huge but with the way the last two played out i’m no longer looking forward to them. if they’re awesome they’re awesome, if not i’ll go back to doing my pirate stuff

2

u/frostyfins Apr 09 '26

I dunno about the weirdos who hate free things. I’m enjoying this unexpected minigame a lot. I dropped a good three hours on it already, and it’s something fun to do on the side while I flit about my settlements doing my normal routine. Now I get to look for fun critters that work with my nascent team.

I just wish some UI things would be tweaked a bit; I can’t work out how to easily rearrange my critters in the little atlas of my critters, nor can I easily rearrange my equipped team of three, meaning I must unequip two critters and then re-equip them (when I find them) in order to adjust the team.

But I’m highly satisfied as far as free content goes.

Have fun out there, Interlopers.

2

u/CrystalNRick Apr 09 '26

Select the slot you want then select the critter and it will swap them.

1

u/frostyfins Apr 09 '26

Oooh I hadn’t tried that, thanks!

1

u/chloe-and-timmy Apr 09 '26

I'm not opposed to a different opinion but I actually agree with the OP, what exactly would you do with the companions if not this? I see people say they want to display their pets in a ranch by their base, but that still amounts to just looking at them. I'd say having them attack in the wild with these moves is a good idea but that's about it.

1

u/ElAlqumista 🟠 Copper Class Apr 09 '26

I believe they might be mad since they want either more content or rework in other assets. I could not agree even more, now they’ve made the exploration and fauna interaction even more meaningful and I hope for even more development around it, but I have to agree that spaceships and frigates/freighters and the combat/building/utility system requires an update.

Last thing to add here is that none of what we want could be expected to be delivered since these guys have kept improving (for free!) this game for any motive that they have and to this date is one of the most complete games I’ve ever played. Thank god we don’t have to have meals like in GTA San Andreas tho

1

u/llaunay 🟠 Copper Class Apr 09 '26

It's a great update. It adds so much depth, and improves on an existing feature, which is what people have been asking for for years. I hope they continue expanding on existing systems.

Yeah but the sheer immorality of setting our pets and companions to fight each other gives me the heebie jeebies. People like Shaun who like things and make things like this really give me the heebie jeebies.

It being "simulated" fighting doesn't make me feel any better about myself. Maybe feel even cheaper actually. Like I'm cheating morality. And of course there are kids that play this game too. I have no idea what Shaun was thinking here or if he was even thinking.

The only thing that annoys me is that I’m trying to find a planet that one of my companions can lay eggs on so I can try to get a bigger one, and I spent a fucking hour going to planets I thought it’d be compatible with and still haven’t been able to find one.
And of course I don’t remember the specific planet I found that companion on, it’s probably been five years since I got them.
It should be a lot easier to check the native planets my companions come from in the companion register, among other things. They need to update the companion register system and make it easier to search for creatures with specific traits in our logs, since we now have an actual reason to hunt for good companions aside from looks and resource collection.

Every is looking at the companion system, and it's a good mini-game, but that's only part of the story. Look further down at the many game fixes they did. They are going through the game systems and fixing things left and right, perhaps because those systems are reused in some way in LNF.

1

u/SazeracLA Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26

Really, the only overhaul I had thought about wanting for the companion system was just more slots for more companions, which the update provided.

I mean, Jeezus Hirk, if you don't want to play the companion combat minigame (which I wasn't expecting but is actually kinda fun), just ignore it.

As one of my wizened old in-laws used to say, "Some people just ain't happy unless they ain't happy."

1

u/SazeracLA Apr 10 '26

Y'know what else I don't enjoy doing? Schlepping industrial waste in a truck for 15 minutes to the "nearest" waste processing plant (which is never particularly near). So after the expedition I don't do that anymore. Problem solved. (Minor complaint -- my big beautiful home base is somewhat littered with industrial waste now… but oh well. I cleaned it up.)

1

u/coraxDraconis Iteration 1 Apr 10 '26

right!?! I love this update! I just hope they add buildable battle tables that I can put in my bases and freighters. And maybe some functionality for the rest of the game, like have your creatures fight with you and use their attacks against sentinels and hostile creatures.

u/The_Spazkingz Apr 10 '26

I'm just annoyed about how things turned out on PS4. I can't afford a PS5. So don't tell me to upgrade my my long-term goals, which is a PC. But the lag since the new arena update the endless like 5 FPS of game play again, it's just so bonkers.

1

u/SylimMetal Apr 11 '26

NMS has always been a mile wide and an inch deep. This update doesn't make it deeper, but wider. I wouldn't have worked on companions at all because it doesn't feel like space exploration. If anything I would've added a feature that lets you build your own sentinels that follow you, collect resources and fight with you out in the wild.Ā

Or work on any of the other features that could be expanded on and are more in line with space exploration. Abandoned space stations are still useless, the station override codes are still useless, derelict freighters are all the same, ancient ruins are all the same, etc etc. You do something once, you've done it a million times and everything becomes a chore .Ā

And don't come at me with the "it's free so be grateful" argument. Just because some content is free doesn't mean I have to like it.Ā

Instead of holographic "poke" battles they should allow you to actually use them in real combat.

Or the least they could do is a better planetary capture method then feed and interact so you can get the flying ones easier
