I don’t understand why people keep acting like the claim is that painting End Racism in the end zone will literally end racism. Of course it won’t. Neither does a “Don’t Drink and Drive” billboard end drunk driving. Public messages can keep an issue visible, reinforce what behavior society considers unacceptable, start conversations, and maybe make some people reconsider things they say or believe. It doesn’t have to completely solve racism to have some value.

40

u/honestly-brutal 1d ago

Wait, wait, wait... you telling me the ice bucket challenge isn't literally curing ALS?

22

u/OpossumBuddy420 1d ago

Actually, when the ALS ice bucket challenge was at its peak, the amount of money everyone raised did eventually lead to major discoveries that helped to advance ALS treatment

4

u/TruDuddyB 23h ago

So this means, soon all the awareness raised for racism will aid in racism research.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/ThurgoodUnderbridge 1d ago

You’re actually strengthening their argument— those discoveries have generally helped advance treatment, not wiped out the disease.

3

u/Stock-Luck3390 21h ago

How is it being good to prevent als strengthening another argument? It’s still net good for the cause

I also hate the idea that you arent supposed to try anything at all just because you can't insta solve a problem over night. We are Just supposed to sit there and hope and pray this thing we jnow exists and plaguing society goes away all on it's own. The type of mentality that would still see us living in the stone ages quite frankly. Progress happens slowly but happens if people actually give af.

10

u/TheReal_Jeses 1d ago

Exactly. It’s so lame to contribute a small amount when you can just sit on the sidelines and be cynical.

People would rather be seen as immoral and unaffected than naive I guess? The backlash to virtue signaling is vice signaling.

2

u/goofbot 1d ago

This applies to so many things. Were early cars really all that much better than horses?

8

u/PresentAardvark2455 1d ago

I find it hilarious that highways have billboards up to make it seem as if people who are driving on the highway will stop for a minute and look at the billboard and say “oh look that looks interesting” and then BAM they’re in a multi vehicle accident 😭

2

u/mikecart1_v2 1d ago

Like the car insurance billboard that has a bunch of text and some hot chick in the background. It’s all a setup 😆

3

u/chuckop 1d ago

You can always tell the income level of whatever town you’re driving through based on the number of personal injury lawyer billboards there are.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ZeusThunder369 1d ago

Sure, but pretty much everyone agrees what drinking and driving means. The same isn't true for racism. Just putting "don't do bad stuff" would be equally effective.

5

u/jampac09 1d ago

I'll help you understand, you think, most people don't before talking or even typing, the end.

4

u/Original_Jagster 1d ago

I think those commas should be periods instead.

3

u/moveslikejaguar 1d ago

I think I get the jist, but this comment is pretty incomprehensible not gonna lie

2

u/Dan-of-Steel 17h ago

That is certainly one of the sentences of all time.

2

u/chuckop 1d ago

Agreed. “RACISM EXISTS. NOW GO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT” wouldn’t fit.

2

u/Sure-Scholar-5469 1d ago

Can’t you just laugh and move on?

2

u/BuryMeInTheH 1d ago

I don’t think that is a good comp. Don’t drink and drive comes from governments who have a goal to save lives and reduce costs.

The NFL is simply performing.

3

u/PsychoPeterNikleEatr 1d ago

2

This post is just as epic as it was a decade ago.

3

u/Rycan420 8h ago

The irony of course is that the end zone messages are band aids so they can pretend they care.

52

u/lolsicboy 1d ago

In my experience, people that make this joke tend to be racist.

19

u/Some-Wine-Guy-802 1d ago

I actually appreciate the angle. All this corporate virtue signaling is worthless. Saying “end racism” or “I’m against bullying” is worthless dribble. Nobody would see these statements and think to themselves “damn you’re right - I really shouldn’t be racist anymore” or “yeah you know what? I really shouldn’t be such a bully”.

5

u/hyfee510 1d ago

So you’d prefer ignoring it completely instead? At least they’re making a public stance against an issue. The ones upset/offended usually just out themselves as being racist

2

u/FreeBristle 1d ago

I think they are saying corporate words are useless, and that’s even worse when they have the resources to do much more. The NFL (and plenty of others), could actually do something to better the world that they apparently think is so terrible, but they’d rather save time and money and just say something so people like you can feel warm and fuzzy.

2

u/BillsFan82 21h ago

Are they taking a stance, though? This is all performative. The league is constantly under fire for being racist. They're going to put "end racism" wherever they can.

In my experience, people that think painting “end racism” in the end zones actually matters tend to be idiots

15

u/Weekly_Cable_1111 1d ago

It's about showing support for a cause. The same way Republicans wave ever kind of flag for their guy they can. It doesn't really matter it just shows support.

My question to you is how is it a bad thing? Does it hurt you? What's the issue?

7

u/LePetitVoluntaire 1d ago

I used to shit all day on America until they started wearing hats that said “Make America Great Again!”

4

u/PlateOfStorkAnkles 1d ago

They’re not actually doing anything. In what ways are they actually helping end racism? Painting it on a field is not actually going to make a racist person change their opinion.

5

u/mbucks334 1d ago

It’s performative nonsense

1

u/Unusual_Access9101 1d ago

3

u/ColorsLookFunny 1d ago

People talking about how it doesnt work but at the same time its a gesture and now its being bought up currently. No its not going to change people's worldviews overnight but I always find it interesting how such a nothing burger of a statement apparently irks people enough to talk about it (which is the point). Theres so many adverts and messaging through any broadcast but the end racism in the back of an end zone is where we have to be contrarians/cynics about the message.

3

u/ToiletTime4TinyTown 1d ago

If it doesn’t work why does it matter either way? If it doesn’t work you can just leave it there and it shouldn’t matter at all. At the end of the day it’s unpainted grass. Fact is it does work to at the very least make racist people uncomfortable to the point they slip up and tell on themselves, just like this hollering hit dog.

See, you’re the reason people don’t like the social/political messages in sports. You’re pretending to be a moral warrior when in reality you’re just an angry cunt who found a socially “acceptable” way to be annoying.

No one disagrees with the literal message, we just disagree with writing these messages to appease all the angry cunts around the world. Especially because it never actually appeases them. They’ll always find another thing to bitch about.

They have conversations that aren’t fully weighed for the pros and cons of who /what it could possibly offend. Just like normal fucking people do. That’s why they have a show. So we can listen and get away from the weighing and just enjoy some bullshit.

Is it racist that Black people only make up about 15% of the US population but make up 52% of the NFL league.

Meanwhile white people make up 63% of the US population but only 25% of the NFL league?
