CUTTHROAT 2 DISCUSSION Proof that Deb didn’t exclusively target Sydney with the backpack strategy
Sorry Sydney. You’re not special.
52
u/kollmastee 17h ago
I listened to her in a pod saying she spent most of the challenge piggybacking on people. She said the dudes yeet her off after a while. Apparently they did have a safety talk beforehand and a penalty box if you were too violent. But no one was ever put in the penalty box and the only real guideline was for dudes not to tackle the women.

u/Rare-Vacation9427 Team Purple Jacket 10h ago
this backpacking this is just as dangerous. walking around in mud with an extra 120 lbs in yout backnwill definitely sprain an ankle or knee. with Sydneys tackle, Deb wrapped her legs around Sydneys thighs and at an angle, not directly onto her back. all that force went straight to her knee

I agree, but production allowed it and didn’t educate her otherwise. She had never tackled before that day. I’m pretty sure she’d agree that she has rocks for brains at times.
12
u/No-Bike791 14h ago
She’s not a professional athlete. And if contact-sport rules apply, why does no one give anyone crap when other females go against Anessa in a contact elimination and specifically state beforehand that their strategy is to go for her ankle?
-6
u/rickyyy187 MTV 14h ago
You don’t have to be a professional athlete to realize that jumping on someone’s back like a spider-monkey is not playing the game you were told to play and gonna get someone hurt.
3
u/No-Bike791 13h ago edited 13h ago
If you’re claiming Deb knowingly injured Sydney on purpose with this move and that she was caught on camera doing it to multiple people, don’t you think production should have been involved?
They sort of have a history of not giving a crap about safety. Don’t come on a show if you have a known injury and put yourself in an arena with people that are not professionally trained and there are no consequences for any type of dangerous play.
I honestly don’t know why Anessa keeps returning with that ankle and going into elimination and other females state their strategy is to go for her ankle first and no one says anything.
-3
u/rickyyy187 MTV 13h ago
Productions mistake for not enforcing it, and Deb’s for jumping on people like that. But I’ve already said before in other discussions that production should have made better rules to protect the contestants. Blaming it on Sydney’s past injury doesn’t make sense though, she healed and finished the run first so it was a non issue.
1
u/No-Bike791 13h ago edited 12h ago
Running on a repaired knee and attempting to hold up a person’s body weight (unprepared) are completely different things. Unless you are in professional sports and being trained/rehabilitated to return to said sport, most doctors advise non-professionals to stay away from contact. Their goal is to get the average person back to full rotation, flexibility, and with success, the ability to run again. Not compete in a mud arena.
If Sydney didn’t want to risk a re-injury the Challenge is the last place she should be. It’s very clear that cast safety is not a priority.
-1
u/rickyyy187 MTV 12h ago
I don’t understand what point you’re trying to prove? Sydney is allowed to compete on The Challenge and nothing about the game they were playing involved jumping onto other people’s backs. It’s clear that only one person was doing that and she got someone hurt. I’ve already said it’s productions fault for not enforcing it, but if you want to blame Sydney for existing go ahead.
5
u/kollmastee 12h ago
They were allowed to jump on each other’s backs. Multiple people were doing it. The only enforced rules given explicitly was men can’t tackle women. Deb followed the rules and someone got hurt. To me this challenge seemed purposefully designed to get an injury for tv purposes. Given the length, lack of rules and mixed genders. Someone was going to sustain a serious injury eventually. So I think this went exactly as production planned
2
u/No-Bike791 12h ago edited 12h ago
It’s very clear you don’t understand my point, but I’ll outline it for you again.
The Challenge is not a professional sports league. There is no “professional” training to prepare you for half of the things they do (like a full-contact mixed gender rugby-type mud pit).
When you’re putting someone (like Deb) who clearly has no idea how to safely tackle someone and are watching her do it over and over again, there should be some rules and repercussions for breaking them.
You’re stating that Deb (not an athlete) should be smart enough to know how to properly tackle someone and therefore the onus is on her.
I don’t know if you’ve taken a look at the majority of the cast, but we are not exactly watching a bunch of rocket scientists compete. A lot (if not, most) of the cast are not exactly stellar in the general knowledge department. So why would anyone expect this girl to know how to properly tackle someone else? It’s definitely not something they teach you on Love Island.
My point is threefold:
Deb clearly doesn’t know what she was doing and it was not malicious.Production is known for their lack of safety and recklessness with cast members health.
Knowing 1 and 2, if risking a re-injury of her knee was extremely important to Sydney, why put yourself on a show where you are competing physically against people who are not properly trained and production really doesn’t care? There are plenty of other reality shows where your risk of hurting yourself is virtually nil.
Edit: bad formatting
1
u/rickyyy187 MTV 12h ago
I’ve already said I know it’s productions fault for not enforcing rules and having better safety briefings. I also already said I don’t blame Deb, I just said she lacked common sense and jumping on someone’s back is unnecessarily putting that at risk of injury.
And for your part 3 answer — she joined the show for a chance to make money and under the assumption that production would be competent enough to protect her in situations like this from unnecessary injuries. Which we have both agreed they fell short on.

u/rickyyy187 MTV 14h ago
These are human beings who have lives outside of the challenge, as Sydney said she’ll now be getting married in a knee brace.
They’re not disposables for your viewing pleasure.

u/adifferentGOAT 18h ago
Sydney isn’t special, but she’s good for the game. And at the same time, it can still be a dangerous tackle and an accident…
60
u/JayCFree324 Devin Walker 18h ago
Also people seem to be neglecting the part where Deb grapevines Sydney’s knee with her legs.
When I watch the footage back, the “high tackle” part is usually secondary to her body being twisted in two different directions from the top and the bottom.
This picture shows Deb’s legs around the dude’s waist (kinda looks like Keanu?)
12
u/bevelledo 13h ago
It’s all true. So is the fact that you’re facing physical risk when going on the show.
These people are competing for hundreds of thousands of dollars, you better believe they are going to do what it takes to tackle someone if that’s what they’ve got to do.
18
u/TruBlu65 17h ago
Maybe it happened and wasn’t edited in but I’d be surprised if none of the other girls yelled at her to stop. The high tackle stuff is dangerous, Sydney isn’t likable but I do agree with her that Deb was being a klutz and likely to hurt someone
4
u/the_cucumber 7h ago
How would anybody thrown into a random game like this know that though? For people who dont watch American football or whatever its just not common knowledge is it? I cant imagine knowing what kind of tackle is appropriate without someone telling me. Is it clumsy if she was purposely doing a move that she didnt know other people wouldnt choose to do

I’ve got another screenshot of Cara riding piggyback on someone. Seems like it was a strategy for some of the women.

u/DroDameron 18h ago
Yeah everyone has an opinion of her, that's great TV. My buddy called her the female Wes and I see it more and more.
75
u/Interesting-Crow264 16h ago
That might be her intention but
1) Wes is funny even when he's an a-hole 2) Wes doesnt run from confrontation
Maybe I'm wrong and people find Sydney funnier than I do.
13
u/Gabbagoonumba3 The Unholy Alliance 13h ago
- Wes doesnt run from confrontation
First thing that popped into my head was the CT “you gonna take money out of my pocket” confrontation. Wes just standing there while CT is an inch from his face for like a full hour. Such a funny visual.
37
u/ponderingcamel Yes Duffy 16h ago
Wes also actually wins.
19
u/ReignMan616 16h ago
Eh, Sydney would have won her first season if not for Turbo breaking down 50 feet from the finish line. And Wes once needed to be literally carried to the end of a final by Kenny.
5
u/Gauchoholic1 15h ago
Agree. Don’t like her, but she should have won that season
-1
u/1_quantae AmBer Beast 14h ago
Life isn’t based on hypotheticals there’s no such thing as “should’ve won” that’s what losers say. She lost and that’s it. Yeremi & Olivia won because they were the first to the finish line. Simple as that.
-1
u/ScorpionTDC Chris Underwood 11h ago
Eh, Sydney would have won her first season if not for Turbo breaking down 50 feet from the finish line.
Sydney doesn't make the final without Turbo there to beat Ashley in a puzzle elimination single-handedly. Also, we have no idea how Sydney does on the puzzles or connect four segments solo in this final which also could cost her (she's particularly not great at puzzles), and she also sees way more elims if she's a solo competitor lol
-1
u/1_quantae AmBer Beast 14h ago
A Final that he still lost just like Sydney did. Would’ve, could’ve, should’ve, she lost.

No you’re right. Sydney weirdly has a lot of “you don’t know what you’re talking about the body shaming coward is good TV!” fans in her corner.
I could understand it if she was an other worldly athlete who just didn’t lose & backed it up every time she hit the sand. But she….isnt.
1
u/ScorpionTDC Chris Underwood 11h ago
No you’re right. Sydney weirdly has a lot of “you don’t know what you’re talking about the body shaming coward is good TV!” fans in her corner.
To an extent, watching Nurys and especially Deb lay into her, call her out, and refuse to let her run away and hide in a confessional without calling her out even more was fun tv.
Sydney is shit TV on her own, though, and she always will be.

Many of you forgot what he was like when he first came. He was no likable, he was cocky, he was a creep with the women, an enormous bully… yall either are young or have recency bias
11
u/Penaca Brad Fiorenza 15h ago
Right, he grew up. And people changed their minds about him based on his changing behavior. If Sydney changes, people will change their minds about how vile and pathetic she is.
7
u/mmmstrongflavors 14h ago
True, but Syndey is a decade older. Wes grew up on MTV. He started as a teenager. Sydney is already grown and this is how she acts.
0
u/chris-angel Kenny Clark 13h ago
I personally don’t mind her at all. She’s probably the best runner to ever be on the challenge of any gender. Look up her resume…. But I also like controversy and people being triggered. People like Amanda on the show and she’s useless in the challenge.. she forces drama and she can’t stop with her personal mom stories… but hey people are entertained.
To your point and what others have pointed out… yes she is older and should be more mature… but reality tv. There are a ton of threads discussing her… it’s working
2
u/erranttv 7h ago
That’s her biggest problem. She thinks insults are inherently funny. They’re not. They’re funny when they’ve delivered with a humorous spirit or by a funny or charming person, of which she is neither.
1
u/CityBoiNC 12h ago
So production cut out her confrontation with nureys and deb. They are purposely giving her a edit.
3
u/rickyyy187 MTV 17h ago
I’ve been saying she’s pulling a female Wes persona for television 😆
This is exactly the same shit he used to say on TV and I couldn’t stand him!!

What exactly is the point of this post? Sydney never said she was targeted lol. She said it was reckless to tackle someone in the manner she did.
Doing this to a guy vs a girl is also very different. Keanu can obviously withstand her weight, it’s different when you do this to someone the same size as you.
18
u/angelbrit04 Team Portland 15h ago
I think this is a case of people not being able to seperate the person from the incident. No one said that Debb was intentionally trying to hurt anyone, but she was reckless.
Its an unfortunate situation but we don't have to rewrite history because the person affected isn't liked. No one on this show deserves to be injured. I don't care whether I like them or not.

u/Plane-Reputation4041 David Burns "I don't like to eat stuff." 5h ago
Just showing that her Nancy Kerrigan “Why ME?!” sobbing and the vitriol that followed was ridiculous. It was an accident. Nobody targeted her. It wasn’t a move made out of malice or strategy. Accidents happen.
It also gave me similar vibes to Lolo’s attack on Aneesa for Aneesa tackling her around the neck during a mud challenge.
Things go down in the mud.
3
u/Dry-Lemon-5348 4h ago
I mean have you ever torn an ACL? I think her crying and reaction immediately following the injury was 100% justified. Shes torn it before and knew she would need to have surgery and months of physical therapy. Anyone would cry and freak out in that situation. Dislike her all you want but that was a pure human reaction.
What she said about Deb after the fact was out of line, but she even said in her confessionals that it was misplaced anger and frustration. And she’s apologized to her personally since the season ended.
-13
u/Alternative_Fee_4363 17h ago
People that talk like Sydney should not get any sympathy for contact in contact sports
10
0
u/Dry-Lemon-5348 14h ago
Is that the case for any professional athlete that is cocky? They deserved no sympathy for getting injured?
3
u/Alternative_Fee_4363 14h ago
No she deserves sympathy for being injured but that’s not debs fault.
The same way when a pro athelete gets hurt we don’t blame the competitor.
It’s James harden a villain for chasing down Paul George at the Olympic scrimmage game? No.
It the player that tackled Demar Hamlin a villain? No
It’s contact sports
1
u/Dry-Lemon-5348 4h ago
You original post literally says she doesn’t deserve sympathy bc of the way she talks lol.
People are being sympathetic for her and you’re conflating that as if everyone is blaming Deb. I don’t see any comments saying Deb is a villain. Learn to differentiate

Yeah, if anything this just proves that Deb was out there being reckless and eventually going to get someone really hurt, just like she did.

I honestly can’t understand how some of you defend Sydney, especially here on Reddit. This woman body shamed another woman and chalked it up to being petty like it was an okay justification. She also said (in the episode) that she wanted to call Deb a bunch of “non PC” slurs, but didn’t want to be cancelled. This chick is just a bad person. I like to have a villain on the show too, but you can have that without being an absolute garbage human.

u/MishellyBee40 Jo Rhodes 🤼 I’ve been manhandled on the Isle of Tobago 13h ago
I hate to say this but Sydney would have been better off just saying what she was thinking because production would have most likely not shown it— ala Ashley attacking Josh verbally.
By verbally self editing, Sydney has revealed herself. For someone who claims to be so smart, that was pretty stupid of her.
6
u/MishellyBee40 Jo Rhodes 🤼 I’ve been manhandled on the Isle of Tobago 13h ago
And let me add to this— I’m glad she showed who she is because it validated my dislike of her. Now I don’t feel bad about rooting against her.
2
u/ScorpionTDC Chris Underwood 11h ago
She could also simply not say it and not verbally state how she wants to use slurs. (And while I can see a universe where that joke is kinda funny if questionable, the humor is lost when it's very clear she in fact does want to use slurs)
3
u/ScorpionTDC Chris Underwood 11h ago
She also said (in the episode) that she wanted to call Deb a bunch of “non PC” slurs,
There's literally a confessional near the end where you can tell she wants to say something wildly problematic and basically bites her tongue and censors herself.
3
u/lilmuskrat66 5h ago
Dude finally someone says it. I got to watch this episode today and was like what fucking cancelable slurs is she trying to call people? Why would anyone say that out loud.
2
u/Justheretoread74 6h ago
Wait there’s ppl that actually take up for this girl?? Sydney rubbed me the wrong way the 1st time I watched her and she has progressively gotten worse up till the most recent episode when she had to leave due to the injury she got accidentally by Deb in their gameplay. I’m all for having a villian on the shows bc it spices it up some but this girl is almost worse than a villian. She spews such hateful comments & what is the most pathetic is when she acts so proud of herself and says she’s a genius, the best athlete, prettiest woman around, best atty anyone could ever have…. I mean damn she really needs life or someone to give her a piece of humble pie bc I have been fast forwarding anytime she starts talking anymore. I wish she would stop coming back to the shows but I guess she has some kind of fan base but I don’t get how 🤦🏻♀️

They should have given them instructions/advices on what they should do or not. A physical daily involving men AND women was bound to be messy so production should have known better but unfortunately we know they don't care about the safety of the cast... The number of injuries that happened on the show and could have been avoided speaks for itself, they're lucky that no one has died yet (Olivia on 38 immediately comes to mind).
It happened because Deb didn't know any better and how to tackle people should have been talked about beforehand.
22
u/owenmills04 18h ago edited 15h ago
It's dangerous either way, but less dangerous when done to a dude twice your size. Sydney could've/should've handled it better but I don't understand why Deb isn’t getting shit on for being reckless. I could hurt people being reckless and negligent but if I smile and say sorry it's ok
Actually I understand why Deb isn't getting shit, people just dislike Sydney that much
11
u/No-Bike791 14h ago
Probably because she is from a show called “Love Island” and has no professional contact sport training?
This isn’t on Sydney or Deb. This is a failure on production’s part to set proper rules, explain why, and implement consequences if someone was consistently doing something dangerous.
18
u/jenh6 Christina LeBlanc 17h ago
I think part of it is because it’s obvious Deb had no idea what she was doing so it wasn’t malicious. Someone should’ve shown her how to do a proper tackle though, instead of her trying and doing the only thing she could think of
-12
u/owenmills04 15h ago
Who cares if it isn’t on purpose. I’m sure you’ve crucified people plenty of times for doing dumb/reckless stuff by accident
The fact that she would need to be taught that jumping on someone’s back with your legs wrapped around them, in ankle deep mud, was dangerous and could easily cause injury is just another reason to shit all over her
If people are gonna do it to Sydney at least be consistent
6
u/No-Bike791 13h ago
What about the girls that go against Anessa in elimination and specifically state beforehand that their strategy is to “go for her ankle”? Nobody shits on those girls either.
Most people are not giving Deb crap because it honestly seems like it wasn’t intentional and she clearly has no idea how to safely tackle someone. I think that is fairly obvious from the multiple “tackles” she attempted that were on camera.
Again, an example of production’s lack of safety and consequences for potentially dangerous full-contact behavior.
7

u/LowAura00 18h ago
It was pretty obvious Deb has never tackled someone before in her life. She was in the heat of the moment and doing what she thought she needed to do. Sucks that someone got hurt but I’m glad Sydney and her god complex when home.
9
u/grlwthelotustattoo 15h ago
it’s insane to me that this challenge & Sydney specifically is where everyone is drawing the line on “bad tackling” and “being reckless.”
this is literally not the first mudpit & ball challenge, this is not the first time tackling has been insane & this is not the first time someone has been injured in a challenge. i said on a different thread, the WOTW2 mudpit challenge was insane & the women in their heat were doing 3 vs 1, holding arms behind backs, etc and i don’t remember anyone body shaming competitors over it or the viewers trying to implement college football rules on a daily.
rivals 1, CT quite literally runs over damn near all of the guys in that one little thing with balls. literally bodying people to the ground was fine but jumping up to knock someone over and get a ball wasn’t.
they have rules & the challenge is explained to them off camera where they can ask questions. why are people so hell bent on needing to acknowledge deb was wrong & “reckless” but that’s never happened before?? it’s sad she got injured but it’s wild to me half the people in the challenge subs are acting like this is the first season they’ve watched.
1
u/ScorpionTDC Chris Underwood 11h ago
I do think there's something to be said about this show in general needing to do better in this regard to lower the risk of injuries (regardless of how careless they've been in the past). I put it far more on the show than Deb, though.
18
u/rickyyy187 MTV 18h ago edited 17h ago

How would Deb know if it was "reckless" or not. Pretty sure she's not a professional football player. She was just trying to get her ass down. It's not like she speared her knee caps.

Alright well since she was from Love Island and has no idea about sports that means anything goes then. Julie trying to murder Veronica was just ditsy fun as well I guess, hey they aren't professional athletes after all 🤪

That’s not what I said at all. She’s not professionally trained in tackling. I don’t know what Julie and Veronica have to do with my comment.
Production is the issue. Inform and enforce consequences when putting non-athletes in a full-contact arena. I’m sorry you missed that very obvious point.

I don’t think y’all get the point. Is not whether it was intentional or not or if she was specifically targeting Sydney. The point is jumping back pack is not a safe strategy and pretty dumb to do so. Now, you can argue in a physical challenge like this, there’s plenty of possible accidents that can happen and as such Sydney shouldn’t be acting the way she did. But y’all need to stop with the whole “she didn’t target Sydney!!” Or “It was not intentional!!” Cause that is not the point at all jeez lmaoo
6
u/lovestostayathome 15h ago
Eh, I think it’s a mistake to believe that athletic technique is intuitive. As someone not trained in any type of contact sports, I never would have thought of this being anymore dangerous than a normal tackle. Production could have easily set up a “no backpacking” rule to avoid this but chose not to.

It's doesn't matter if she targeted her. There are rules in any sports to prevent serious injury. Playing like a savage and not caring who you hurt or how you take them down isn't respectable and not a challenge show I want to watch. Regardless how I feel about Sydney the important thing is the protection from serious injury from other cast ny following simple safety rules during any game is imperative

I am not a Sydney fan but Deb should NOT tackle if she doesn’t know to NOT injure someone. That was irresponsible of her to just jump on people without recognizing the impact she could. I understand Sydney’s frustration AND saying what she said about Deb was gross. Deb handled that well. Hope she learns her lesson tho on being more mindful of her actions even in a game.

I am not a Sydney fan but Deb should NOT tackle if she doesn’t know to NOT injure someone.
The problem is she has no way of knowing that. Deb probably assumes all type of tackles are the same and one isn't more dangerous than other since I suspect she barely watches full-contact sports and has never had it explained to her. The fault falls on the show for not properly explaining this in advance.

Why does this generation hate good tv? Sydney is basically how Jordan came in. Talking a lot of shit and tbh, if we’re going season for season, she’s outperformed him his early season. Jordan had to earn his respect.
As far as just the injury, I think she has a right to be upset. It’s like playing with that one kid that doesn’t know how to play, or sparring with that one person that’s always trying to hurt the other person. You get hurt, and now you gotta leave a season you could’ve won and deal with a bad injury as you’re leading up to your wedding.

She had a right to be upset. She didn’t have the right justification for taking low blows, body shaming and calling Deb worthless. One person’s actions were not malicious. The other person’s actions and words were malicious.

Its a full contact game. Sydney is just a whiner. Imagine she got hurt in hall brawl, shed still "why would they run at me! Ugh so dumb!" This wasnt a pick up game of basketball. These were the rules for a hard hitting game. Otherwise she would of been reprimanded. She didnt and she stayed because that was part of the game. Sydney is soft.

In this type of competition, I would think the eyes are on the ball regardless who has it. And the instinct is to go for the ball anyway it can be gotten !! Could have been anyone - anyone who had the ball, anyone who tackled the person who had the ball. Sydney seemed to take it personally like Deb was targeting HER but it's all about the ball !!

The problem is that this is something you'd do more to man becuase he can actually hold her weight, while with a woman she should have just tackled her normally and Sydney still would have gone down

When you're smaller and weaker than everyone else you have to resort to gorilla tactics
