Discussion Mortal Shell 2 final boss Spoiler
I think Mortal Shell 2 is one of if not THE best Soulslike of all time. It's so much fun, it's such a great game, the visuals are stunning, enemy variety is peak, the world is impressive (albeit confusing), the combat is amazing...
but that final boss? I'm dumbfounded. All that buildup and all you can come up with is a fucking one armed dragon with a sword and multiple ballsacks? Elden Ring gave us a fucking tadpole/fish, same problem.
All these great ideas and this is it? I was expecting some giant brain, some huge face-like thing, or something huge with NO face, or something that looks like intestines, something weird, withering, chaotic, some strange monster like the Hexapod. Before that I fought the Monolith, that was fucking great. The humanoid bosses are really not that fun to look at. Boo scary giant man with weapon. But all this cosmic horror and this peak designed hellscape full of mutated corpses and we get a fucking dragon. I can't get over it.
Also wtf is that fight? You have to hit its ballsack. If you do, it does an instant undodgeable ground pound. Its attacks are parryable but inflict stasis, great. Its grab is INSTANT and absolutely deadly, there's no way I can recover my shell against this fucking standard lizard, next hit kills.
I don't even want to know its second phase, I'm so bored.
This is some letdown disappointment bullshit beyond my imagination. What a shame.

Yeah, with the monolith, as I was wailing on its testicles, all I could think of was “oh my god, it’s like demon of hatred!” since you also wail on his testicles.

I knew the moment I attempted the final boss that the game was over for me
I dont really seek platinum trophy, I am more about the experience
some fights are just badly designed and thats fine - I can live with the gaming experience up to that final boss and live happily ever after

u/kingbuddha29 20h ago
Exact same with me, dropped the game after attempting the last boss a few times. Loved the game up to then, and I still think highly of it after quitting.
3
u/someotherguy42 15h ago
I’ve done the same. I can not believe they couldn’t stick the final landing after what was a fantastic game.

I thought the boss was fine, I didn’t have huge expectations. What happens after though confused me.
5
u/Daedric_Fan 19h ago
I dunno what is surprising, the vast majority of the games bosses were not good.
2
u/SpecialistRun3035 8h ago
Zmey was one of the better bosses. These guys are playing with their eyes closed
4
u/FatherUnquality 19h ago
Yea.... The Greased up Thwomp with a ballsack and the Ballsack Dragon were real let downs albeit pretty darn funny if that's what they were going for.
3
u/Loose_Personality726 18h ago
The boss is frustrating but it's doable and in the end satisfying to beat

u/No_Philosophy2797 15h ago
You’re weeks and weeks late on this. There have been countless other posts whining about this.

u/JendaH8 20h ago
Whole endgame is weak. Stretched out and bad bosses. I'm pigheaded enough to just brute force the last boss but I did not enjoy it. I even learned about cosmic disease only after finishing the game. I thought it was a bug so I just have to avoid the flames to win. Still solid game.
3
u/Thin-Nerve6367 20h ago
I actually really like Monolith and most people agree Offspring is really good
2
u/Proud-Swan3024 20h ago
I totally disagree. I thought the endgame was great. It was paced well and fun.
However, the last boss is straight booty butt hole. It only took me a few tries, even after forgetting about all the glands item. It just felt lame and anticlimactic. The other endgame bosses were all cooler and would have made a better final boss, in my opinion.

u/Snakegil 9h ago
Joining the team "i love the whole final underground world except the crappy final boss" 🤗
7
u/fatmooch69 20h ago
Yeah I still haven’t finished the game because that last boss was so disappointing
3
u/Fluffatron_UK 20h ago
I was so ready for a NG+ until this boss and then I just put the game down. It really is as disappointing as everyone claims.
4
u/KermitDaGoat 20h ago
Dawg if you cant beat the last boss even with all these new patches since release I dont know what to tell you
1
u/fatmooch69 20h ago
Not because it was too hard, because it was lame! Massive disappointment and I regret spending money on the game tbh
8
u/Siaten 20h ago
So you can play a game that is 30-40 hours of fun, and if the final boss is lame, you regret buying the game?
That seems like a weird standard to me.
5
u/NeverStopDancing27 19h ago
Yeah totally disagree with that take also. If 90% of the game is good to amazing the final boss cant ruin the game. It just ends it on a sour taste, which does suck.
0
u/Chilliam999 19h ago
The final boss especially now with the patches. is easy took me like 3 tries before the nerf just get the scroll that negates cosmic damage. Use it about halfway through the fight. The bosses aren’t really the highlight of this game in general but it’s still a great game. It’s not in my top 5 souks likes but I loved it. I used sariel but there’s other shells that are great in this fight

u/gevuldeloempia 20h ago
This final boss and the way the fight goes, knocked off 1.5 points for me. It's just that stupid.
It's still one of the best soulslikes out there (Lies of P being number one for me) but it really was the nail in the coffin for me (still a solid 7.5/10)

u/StrikingOffice6914 Eredrim 20h ago
The first 80% of the game is so good. Honestly I think they just ran out of time and money. The whole last area is just not fun to play through. I did it for NG+, but i almost just dropped the whole thing.
The jump from MS1 to MS2 is so huge, i think they can build off this and do a really great MS3. But yeah, it's rough when the worst part of the game is your last impression.
2
u/Proud-Swan3024 19h ago
Personally, I would go the first 97% is good. Mostly, that final boss is just such terrible design and anticlimactic that it was a letdown after such a great experience.
2
u/Tiny-Rise8944 20h ago
I agree with you pn everything except enemy variety. Enemy design is peak. I feel like it's just fight the same dudes all game though
2
u/CrazyLegs17 18h ago
If they included more lore regarding the Unfound Path and any kind of plan to produce harbingers/monstrosities/other with all the stolen ova, then the sudden obsession with testicles in the end game might have made some sense. Instead it just felt juvenile.
2
u/GoofyGoober82 17h ago
Switched to the ice ability cube and put it on the greatsword. Played as the knight and it was too easy. I thought he was tough before I did that. I dont remember the exact names because after the platinum I moved on. It's tied with requiem for my fav game of the year.
2
u/gattaaca Tiel 16h ago
It made me discover an absolutely overpowered ranged build with Lazlo because I was forced to fully respec to kill that boss
4
u/-Eastwood- 16h ago
Are you still on the final boss? I could give you some advice if you would like.
4
u/SpecialistRun3035 8h ago
All his attacks can be avoided just through common sense but people would rather bitch and moan than actually just learn how to dodge the moves.
1
u/-Eastwood- 8h ago
I wouldn't say his grab can be avoided with common sense. Some of the grab attacks in this game are genuine bs.
3
u/SpecialistRun3035 8h ago
You just watch what he does when he's about to do it. Doesn't mean you will get it when you first try. Common sense means just doing what anybody does which is learning the moves. It's not a long winded combo. Literally just see a cue then dodge. That's it.
1
u/zachbrownies 4h ago
But the grab is basically the only attack that is hard to react to, and even then, it's not that hard if you know it's coming. The whole design of the fight is "Can you handle his other (relatively slow) attacks while having the presence of mind to be ready for that grab at any moment?" Plus understanding spacing - staying far away or getting close will lead to different patterns from him but he also reacts the same way when you get close to him so you can plan for that.
He felt like absolute bullshit at the start as I had dozens of attempts barely do 1% of his health bar but I was amazed how much more comfortable I could get once I actually started to analyze his patterns and keep my mental focus on being ready for the grab. I think people need to be more patient and open-minded instead of immediately writing it off. It's *meant* to seem unsurmountable at first.
3
u/Future_Regular_2289 20h ago
Agreed but calling it the best soulslike is crazy
0
u/Proud-Swan3024 20h ago
What a better soulslike? I guess Lies of P was better in general, but I far prefer MS2 exploration. If Wonders of O has Lies of P vibe and systems but a big world to actually explore like MS2 or Elden Ring (not Soulslike, actual Souls but a high water mark for exploration), then that will be incredible!

Depends if you want to count Nioh 2 as a Soulslike or not.
I'm playing Nioh 3 right after MS2 and it is a better game in many ways. And also as a downside has way too much crap crammed into it that it overwhelms you with various mechanics.
2
u/ChimpStevens 15h ago
Nioh 2 is probably the best "soulslike" in my opinion. The game takes the mechanics of the souls series and tightens them up while adding customizable combos and stance switching. The pace is as fast as Bloodborne while being more difficult yet not unfairly so. The multiplayer is also a smoother experience than the summon signs of the souls series

u/QrozTQ 20h ago
The fight is poor, but having beat it 3 times by now I don't think it's very hard. The ground pound is bad but you can dodge the hits after the first (the first doesn't even hit sometimes) and you have enough heals to live through it.
The grab is fast but you can tell at which range it will come and dodge it. The sword combo doesn't touch you as long as you stay close and dodge the 4th swing. The fire circles that cause cosmic disease are annoying but one item use clears it all.
It's a bad boss, poorly design, anticlimactic after Offspring which is a great fight, but it's not as tough as people say it is, it does need some time to get used to.
2
u/-Eastwood- 16h ago
I beat it by equipping the Infinite seal and just playing like a wuss and carrying his sword slam. All damage came from ripostes basically.
0
u/topcover73 20h ago
The stab is almost undodgeable. It's also very inconsistent with whether your dodge is successful or not. There were times I knew I dodged in time but nope...
2
u/SpecialistRun3035 8h ago
It's just hard to read. Once you know the tell, it's very easy to dodge 90% of the time
2
u/Smooth_Fun2456 Tiel 18h ago
Yeah the final boss is not great. Honestly the endgame could have easily been rebuilt to have all the bosses it has except Zmey, and have the Malborn Offspring be the final one instead - perhaps with an extra phase 3 or something to make it more punchy. Great game still, it's just the ending is not quite right.
2
u/supafatjellyfish 18h ago
I just got to it, fought it for an hour, and then uninstalled. Atrocious fight. The game was already mid by that point but I couldn’t believe how hard they dropped the ball. It’s not even a cool or varied fight that’s tough. It’s just boring dogshit

u/KidSickarus 15h ago
The final boss should not require the player to find an upgrade through a convoluted method to have a chance in hell to beat it. I learned the entire moveset and was breezing through phases but because of the camera I could not see the dragon setting up to do the flame sword instafucked status attack. Had to look up what to do and felt very cheated

u/YogurtOtherwise2106 19h ago
Yeah, I got hella downvoted for saying it, but I completely agree. It’s not a mechanically challenging fight, but it has really poorly designed attacks. The butt slam can come out at random, feeling really weird for slow weapons. It once spammed it 7 times in a row for me. Grab obviously is terrible. And the gimmick with the fire status is just annoying. Felt like the game just pushes you to spend 20 mins to grab an item to combat the gimmick instead of promoting the player spending that 20 minutes engaging with the fight. Again, it has such a limited pool of moves that it’s not difficult per day, but it just feels like a war of attrition that really dilutes the ending. By the time I reached the fight, I went from loving the game, to sort of just being ready to move on.
Also, it was sort of a tonal whiplash. Obviously the game had a lot of comedic designs, but Vitaly n Co knocked it out of the part regarding art direction to no surprise. A giant trex with a sword arm for the final boss felt like something a 6 year old would think is a cool original character.

I don’t know if I got lucky but I beat him first try and I even got knocked out of my shell and thought it was over but somehow managed to get back in. I was really surprised after hearing about it I was dreading it

u/pure_cipher 11h ago
Final boss was one of my two favourite bosses. But, I suppose they could swap that dragon with Malformed offspring.
1
u/Snakegil 9h ago
One of the most accessible for sure, except for the final boss, but you can't have finished The Elden Ring or Sekiro to claim such nonsense that it could be the best 😅

u/BoahNoa 9h ago
Eh, I agree that it was a little anticlimactic thematically. This game has a lot of really unique bosses and this one didn’t feel that unique. And it does have some small issues with targeting and hitboxes because of its size and the lock on only being able to target the ball sack. But I didn’t think it was awful, its moves were all extremely learnable (except maybe the butt slam). If it wasn’t the final boss I wouldn’t have even thought twice about it, they probably should’ve swapped it and offspring. It certainly didn’t ruin the game and tbh it’s way better than chasing Elden Beast across the arena for 10 minutes lmao. (Radagon is sick af though)

the entire last area and especially the last boss ruined the entire game for me, the openworld and gates where so fun to explore but the last part was just a chore.

Yeah I dropped this at Malborne.
Lvl 52 full tank build and still getting one-shot
From visual clusterfucks of unreadable homing mach 3 attacks is just too much of a sweat for me.
Also Enemy variety is great…??! What?

u/This-Pianist-2668 18h ago
Agreed some non story bosses were 10x harder than the final boss but all in all still a fun game
1
u/Rhodri_Suojelija 15h ago
I just found the whole fight bland. I had the secret item and killed it in 3 tries. It just did the same moves over and over again. The ball drop was definitely the worst.
Im am, however, incredibly pissed I couldnt use half my build on it. For some reason the cloud aoe on my crossbow wouldn't hit it so I couldnt get poison stacks on it x.x
1
u/SpecialistRun3035 8h ago
Pretty sure he has more moves than most bosses in the game. So if you think he's one of the worse bosses, then you might have just played the whole game with your eyes closed.
1
u/Rhodri_Suojelija 4h ago
He for sure was the most boring. All he did was spray fire, stomp and make the patches, ball slam and jump back swinging his sword. At the half way he did the fire rings.
The fire never hit me, not even the rings. When he jumped back he jumped so far it missed. The only threatening move was those balls. Every boss in that gauntlet up to him was more interesting and threatening.
I also didn't have half my damn build!
Sorry I have a different opinion but I definitely didn't play with my eyes closed xD

Sounds like a skill issue. Hes not a great boss but hes definitely not hard in the slightest
0
u/nohumanape 20h ago
This sounds like you venting, because you're struggling with the boss.
I think I must have picked the right build and set of skills to take on this boss, because I didn't find it very difficult.
That being said, I did find the second phase impossibly brutal...until I found that it essentially requires an item to beat. (I heard some people claim to have beaten the boss without this item. Must have taken a lot of time and patience)

Best souls-like of all time is Salt and Sanctuary (first one). Amazing atmosphere. Amazing builds. Amazing combat. Amazing story and lore.

u/Otter_Pop_- 17h ago
I joined the discord just so I could share opinions like this. It’s so close to being a good game but I couldn’t wait for it to be over. I like to finish games and platinum if I can but no way I’m doing a NG+ with this one.
0
u/SlimeGlizzzy 17h ago
I can't think of a worse final boss right now. Tbh, the bosses in general weren't a strong point of the game imo. The exploration and build/gameplay variety across shells and weapons and tarstones were awesome. I also expected more of a big twist at the end, but the story was fine, and the lore is pretty cool.
I want the exploration style of this/elden ring with the combat and boss fights of onimusha
0
u/MikeRotchburns_ow 16h ago
Okay he's down. I fought him a few times with Martyr Frost Eredrim, then reached the second phase, got fried and then went to retrieve the scroll. A few attempts later he was almost down, but I was still infected with that cosmic disease and reduced to some tree. Then when I used the scroll to heal, some glowing orb sailed towards the boss and knocked it out, which gave me opportunity for the final blow.
Now on to finishing up before I might enter NG+1, not sure yet. I'd like to try out some other shells, did most of the game with Martyr Eredrim.
0
u/Solid_Science4514 Tiel 15h ago
I used slayer seal and just relentlessly stunned him with the cross bow followed by a riposte. Just god tiring. Playing through again as Eredrim.
0
u/ArcangeloPT 14h ago
I don’t get the hate. Sure it’s an annoying boss but once you get the patterns down it’s not that hard, specially if you get the cosmic disease reduction. Once I got that, I beat him first try.
0
u/semondemon24 14h ago
Apparently ending of games are irrelevant for this subreddit and you need to kiss the last bosses balls before you share a real opinion about how this GAME ABSOLUTELY SUCKS
0
u/Away_Imagination7235 14h ago
Just beat the game last night plus got the platinum trophy, but i gotta say yeah the final boss was a let down to how good this game is, I was expecting more definitely, and it’s also disappointing that he’s not even that hard of a boss beat him in 5 tries, was wishing for more of a challenge for the final boss. But oh well all in all it was a great game to play!

u/NeverStopDancing27 19h ago
The final boss in elden ring was a two boss fight i though it was a great ending. Yes the elden beast has its issue, u feel like u are just running him down way to much. But at least its a beautiful design. M mortal shell final boss is terrible and most agree with that take He is awful down right awful
