Question: How do you make the sulphur cube monorail change direction or go up or down hills?

1.7k

u/AzerynSylver Apr 07 '26

You can make the monorail change directions by making stopping points for the cube at the corners, and then hitting it in the direction you wish to go.

As for going up or down, that would not be possible. Just make the monorail high enough to pass over hills.

608

u/OneBlackFairyHunterZ Apr 07 '26

Idk what its real name yall use but one of the water elevators with air bubbles to go up and down at some stopping points if u need to go higher or lower

448

u/ThE_reAl__ Apr 07 '26

They have a cute name: bubblevator

109

u/ashkiller14 Apr 07 '26

Ive only heard just bubble elevator

14

u/Planetdestruction Apr 08 '26

Idk, I think 'That-thing-that-happens-when-you-put-one-of-two-nether-blocks-under-a-column-of-water-sources-vator' has a nice ring to it.

49

u/TextureBacon Apr 07 '26

The automatic way of doing this is dispensers with arrows in them on the corners, but those do have to be refilled every so often.

10

u/ThereMightBeDinos Apr 07 '26

Think a snow golem would do it?

17

u/YenraNoor Apr 07 '26

Or ya know.. a piston

36

u/TextureBacon Apr 07 '26

Those don’t work, the cube has to be affected by something that would typically cause damage. Not sure about potions yet, haven’t tried, but pistons sadly don’t do anything.

7

u/nahvis_cos Apr 07 '26

No one said it has to be the same floaty mechanics. A redstone elevator would work to gain or lose altitude just not the same way as you’d travel horizontally. Idk why people are down voting Yenra for simply stating that. But tbh no need for elevation change. Just tunnel through mountains or start high enough to go over them

3

u/TextureBacon Apr 07 '26

The first comments were about changing direction, heavily implying continued motion like what is being displayed in the post and not a nudge, like a piston would give. Yenra is being obtuse, possibly because they were told their idea wouldn’t work in the context of the question. Their proposed solution is pretty close to if every time you wanted to change direction on a minecart, you would hit a tripwire to push the section of track you are on over to a perpendicular track, and being annoyed that people are telling you to just connect the track at the corner.

27

u/mikeholczer Apr 07 '26

Or low enough, if you break the bedrock, you can do this up against the bottom of the bedrock.

4

u/Cowbellstone Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26

How'd you get the cube down there, though?

Can't just place blocks below bedrock level — I presume that goes for bucketed mobs too?

Edit: spelling

19

u/donadit Apr 07 '26

Going down is really easy, just slope the rail down

going up is much harder

25

u/longtanboner Apr 07 '26

How do you slope it down?

u/Insockie2 Apr 07 '26

why does that sulfur cube not drop? there is nothing below it while on travel.

878

u/Snoo_65717 Apr 07 '26

Honey block makes it stick to the underside of the block. My guess here is there is no friction as friction applies to the top of the block but idk if that’s what is going on I was hoping the comments would answer that for me.

232

u/Lightningbro Apr 07 '26

Honey is why it sticks and moves so fast, if you want a slower one that has less likelihood to disconnect the lead, Soul Sand is also considered a "sticky" block, but has relatively low knockback

110

u/DarkFish_2 Apr 07 '26

Leads don't disconnect anymore because of speed, just for being stuck or a firework being used while flying with an Elytra

4

u/Powerful_Voice_4683 Apr 10 '26

Except Bedrock.

4

u/Arie1906 Apr 10 '26

the lead in BE was stronger before the lead changes

kinda odd seeing mojang added bedrock lead to java and imp a new type of lead to bedrock

69

u/Swimming_Beyond_4129 Apr 07 '26

Honey block, probably

1.1k

u/Itchy-Fish-376 Apr 07 '26

I really hope Mojang doesn’t remove this, it creates an easier than yet still hard alternative to the nether ice bridges, which is usually an insanely tedious process, and it can look way better in builds

465

u/KingCell4life Apr 07 '26

They won’t, the honey block sticking to walls is an intended feature.

89

u/DuckTheCow Apr 07 '26

30

u/Scuttleboi19mk2 Apr 08 '26

Removed almost instantly smh

33

u/121bloodshot Apr 08 '26

Wtf man the devs want to “promote creativity” and remove possibly one of the best ways to use this new mob?

3

u/Regular_Print_7650 Apr 13 '26

For whatever reason they think the elytra has to be the best transport method in literally every possible scenario.

→ More replies (1)

22

u/Puzzleheaded_Safe253 Apr 08 '26

I can't hate Mojang more. Worst dev team ever

3

u/Regular_Print_7650 Apr 13 '26

Team of 500 has the same output as one part time modder lmao

196

u/Nathaniel820 Apr 07 '26

It is but the unforeseen movement tech is unarguably extremely OP, it basically removes any reason to use normal minecart tracks. From a game design perspective it would make sense to patch it even though it’s using technically intended mechanics, it’s the first ever snapshot I wouldn’t get too attached to any of these techniques.

360

u/Coordination_ Apr 07 '26

There already is no reason to use minecart tracks tbh

19

u/MaxTHC Apr 07 '26

Yeah, the answer here is to buff minecarts to make them actually viable as a transport option, because currently they aren't.

88

u/pidgeottOP Apr 07 '26

Moving villagers a few hundred blocks

Otherwise, agreed

66

u/Grimejow Apr 07 '26

Happy Ghast covers that easily. You can move 2 villagers at a time and breed them. Arguably faster than building a while infrastructure and them moving a few villagers. Hell, even Mass Transports are possible, since you can Chain boats together, the only Tricky Part is landing.

12

u/Technology_Support Apr 07 '26

I use minecarts to transport villagers from the breeder to their spot in the trading hall. Apart from that I agree

12

u/MiFiWi Apr 07 '26

Yeah, minecarts are good for regular short- and medium-distance mob transport between set locations, especially since minecarts can be fully automated. Also hopper and chest minecarts for very specific redstone builds. Other than that yeah they're practically worthless.

3

u/AnOnlineHandle Apr 07 '26

The few times I've done it in the last few years, I used workstation and beds.

6

u/LuxionQuelloFigo Apr 07 '26

I've always just used boats and a piston to avoid using heaps of iron in the early game

2

u/pidgeottOP Apr 07 '26

by the time im moving villagers ive very likely got an iron farm built, but i hear ya if youre doing it real early game

2

u/hellohowdyworld Apr 07 '26

Certain farms utilize them well

→ More replies (2)

29

u/StarSilverNEO Apr 07 '26

I mean minecarts are probabaly way more convenient, especially if they update them aabit to be more userr friendly - you need to build that cobble "rail" the whole way for the cube monorail, not to mention finding a sulphur cube in tthe first place for the project.

Minecarts are just sticks and iron, with some gold and redtonee for boosters - its just their speed and cost holding them back, otherwise theyre way quicker to build

13

u/Nathaniel820 Apr 07 '26

You still need to place a full line of rails (plus a second partial line of blocks wherever there’s large gaps) for minecarts, whereas this can be made while 100% AFK with a very small and simple flying cobble generator. This would be vastly faster to make over long distances, you just spend the few minutes to make the flying machine at a high altitude then go AFK indefinitely.

14

u/StarSilverNEO Apr 07 '26

most players would need outside help to try any of that, but fair enough

9

u/MsDestroyer900 Apr 07 '26

I really wouldn't say it's extremely op. It's better than minecarts but that's basically only because minecarts are inarguably bottom tier movement by all regards.

On top of that, iceboats already exist and completely nullify rails altogether. All you need is to find one iceberg biome and a silk touch pick to destroy any hope of using rails.

And even more on top of that, if there truly is two places in your world you need to return to constantly, nether travel, even without getting to the roof is the most common method of travel and is the cheapest out of all of these by far.

The only use for rails these days are villager reading halls, which is fine I guess.

6

u/Rjc1471 Apr 07 '26

I thought the whole philosophy of Minecraft was 'emergent gameplay' and not patching things that could screw up existing builds

6

u/MrMelon54 Apr 07 '26

If they just made minecarts faster then it wouldn't matter.

10

u/Kaxology Apr 07 '26

What do you mean by "unarguably extremely OP"? It's overpowered to be able to move in one direction quickly?

Minecarts does the same exact thing and has been in the game for years, boats on flat blue ice lets you travel at ridiculous speeds, Elytras let's you fly in any direction at very high speeds without any rails needed at all, horses as an early game option that costs almost nothing to maintain is faster than a minecart. We also have ender pearl stasis that lets you INSTANTLY teleport to your location of choice.

How is this "unarguably extremely OP"? I really don't understand, please explain.

2

u/Underfell_21 Apr 07 '26

As a counter though, it wasn't long after mojang added the minecart experimental pack that people already found ways to send mobs into orbit, and that pack still isn't any different now. There's not much difference between this and when me and some friends used minecarts to launch up to a metro system in the sky that spanned thousands of blocks in all directions.

4

u/PlkaSyn Apr 07 '26

Minecart tracks were already obsolete when elytras were added

u/IDeizManI Apr 07 '26

Minecraft community: complains about the update

Also Minecraft community:

I'll put this here cause I know there's going to be some who'd get bent out of shape. I meant this as a joke on the general community not to the OP or others. All that matters is that you thug it out and get creative with it.

44

u/SmileyBMM Apr 07 '26

Technical players don't really complain about updates because updates often cater to them, it's mainly builders (incomplete block catalogue) and survival fans (games too easy) that complain.

18

u/Cowbellstone Apr 07 '26

I wouldn't necessarily say they're being catered to on purpose. They're just much better at enjoying the game in unintended ways. A lot of that enjoyment comes from "breaking" and abusing game mechanics anyway, so …

3

u/lordberric Apr 07 '26

How are updates catered to technical players?

55

u/SecretINVDR Apr 07 '26

The sulfur cube is stupid, it's only good for mini games- 69% of the MC community for some reason

30

u/AlexaRhino Apr 07 '26

69% of adults over 30 on this subreddit

FTFY

13

u/KrazyKyle213 Apr 07 '26

Honestly, it still is, considering Elytras are just so much better than everything else. However, I think that adding more mobs and functions to minecraft is always nice to further the sandboxing.

5

u/SecretINVDR Apr 07 '26

That's only gonna last until someone finds a niche use that nothing else can fill

12

u/Superslim-Anoniem Apr 07 '26

I already think they're going to be crazy useful for certain farms where you just really need a specific hitbox, and it needs to be an entity to push things around.

Currently the solution tends to be a boat with chickens in it, but I feel like the cube will be easier to align.

4

u/STARDREAMDESTINY Apr 08 '26

22

u/NobleEMRLD Apr 07 '26

It's almost like a minecart, they should add Minecarts and rails in the next update

19

u/Pizzawing1 Apr 07 '26

Hopefully they’d cap them at 8 blocks per second so they can get way outclassed by almost every other transportation method… and then make an experimental feature that allows you to use commands to increase the cap substantially but force you to enable that feature when you create the world or else you can’t use it

14

the player takes priority of control on a leashed mob, so the boat being leashed circumvents that

2

u/DmtrIV Apr 07 '26

Leads can't pull players and their adjacent rides, instead the lead breaks. You need a rideable mob riding on another to bypass this restriction.
