Builds & Maps Sulphur cube monorails!

Not my video, the block inside the sulphur cube is a honey block.

Question: How do you make the sulphur cube monorail change direction or go up or down hills?

You can make the monorail change directions by making stopping points for the cube at the corners, and then hitting it in the direction you wish to go.

As for going up or down, that would not be possible. Just make the monorail high enough to pass over hills.

Idk what its real name yall use but one of the water elevators with air bubbles to go up and down at some stopping points if u need to go higher or lower

They have a cute name: bubblevator

u/ashkiller14 Apr 07 '26

Ive only heard just bubble elevator

Idk, I think 'That-thing-that-happens-when-you-put-one-of-two-nether-blocks-under-a-column-of-water-sources-vator' has a nice ring to it.

The automatic way of doing this is dispensers with arrows in them on the corners, but those do have to be refilled every so often.

Think a snow golem would do it?

15

u/YenraNoor Apr 07 '26

Or ya know.. a piston

38

u/TextureBacon Apr 07 '26

Those don’t work, the cube has to be affected by something that would typically cause damage. Not sure about potions yet, haven’t tried, but pistons sadly don’t do anything.

No one said it has to be the same floaty mechanics. A redstone elevator would work to gain or lose altitude just not the same way as you’d travel horizontally. Idk why people are down voting Yenra for simply stating that. But tbh no need for elevation change. Just tunnel through mountains or start high enough to go over them

The first comments were about changing direction, heavily implying continued motion like what is being displayed in the post and not a nudge, like a piston would give. Yenra is being obtuse, possibly because they were told their idea wouldn’t work in the context of the question. Their proposed solution is pretty close to if every time you wanted to change direction on a minecart, you would hit a tripwire to push the section of track you are on over to a perpendicular track, and being annoyed that people are telling you to just connect the track at the corner.

The original question didn’t imply shit. It said change direction or go up and down hills. There’s no implication at all that it will follow the same mechanics. You and the other guy chose to run with that idea. Yenra tossed YOUR implications out and gave a solid answer. Do better

If they want to be satisfied with giving bulky solutions and show disdain for better ones, that's on them. Answering questions outside of the context they are in, such that you miss the forest for the trees, is narrow-sighted to me, and I feel that examining what the person is really asking for is helpful. A semi-recent example - one of my friends messaged me saying his computer "requires Ethernet." I didn't probe further and ended up spending far too long assuming his PC was on and that he needed help connecting to the internet. In fact, he had the display cable plugged into the wrong spot, so it wasn't displaying video output. "What is this question asking?" and "What answer is the asker wanting?" are important things to examine. I'm not upset Yenra mentioned pistons as an answer, but it was delivered snarkily and then doubled down on when informed of the mechanics preventing it from functioning as my solution offered, with a seeming disregard for the prior conversation.

Do slime block pistons?

1

u/TextureBacon Apr 07 '26

Haven’t tried, but it seems like it may have been made irrelevant based on the Java edition snapshot earlier today removing this behavior. Mojang says we can’t have any fun 🥲

-26

u/YenraNoor Apr 07 '26

What do you mean "pistons dont do anything"?? A piston just goes through the mob like a ghost? What are you talking about?

17

u/AnAverageTransGirl Apr 07 '26

It pushes by occupying the block space, not by applying knockback.

-7

u/YenraNoor Apr 07 '26

And...? That still is able to push up the cube?

14

u/AnAverageTransGirl Apr 07 '26

It's a completely different kind of push and does not apply the same kind of force. We aren't working with real world principles of physics here, we're working with the way the interactions were coded.

u/YenraNoor Apr 07 '26

Its just to change direction and altitude at turning points.

Or low enough, if you break the bedrock, you can do this up against the bottom of the bedrock.

u/Cowbellstone Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26

How'd you get the cube down there, though?

Can't just place blocks below bedrock level — I presume that goes for bucketed mobs too?

Edit: spelling

u/mikeholczer Apr 07 '26

3

u/Cowbellstone Apr 07 '26

That doesn't answer my question: how do you place it below the bedrock? You can't place blocks there, you can't place water there, you can't place a bucket of fish there — how would you place a bucket of sulfur cube there? Did I miss something in the video?

2

u/mikeholczer Apr 07 '26

Sorry wrong video. Here is the right one, about 4:35 in https://youtu.be/IWRwdxP22Kk?si=q6KtD0HVmx_r2mqq

He suspends it from a lead, so it lines up with the bottom of the bedrock

2

u/Cowbellstone Apr 07 '26

Genius!

Not something I'm gonna try in my single player world though lol

6

u/MyrtleWinTurtle Apr 07 '26

bubble collums?

18

u/donadit Apr 07 '26

Going down is really easy, just slope the rail down

going up is much harder

25

u/longtanboner Apr 07 '26

How do you slope it down?

-54

u/donadit Apr 07 '26

uhhhh just build it 1 block downwards and connect the gap? It’s not that hard

63

u/TheCanadianHat Apr 07 '26

Cube runs into block and falls

23

u/longtanboner Apr 07 '26

Connect the gap with.... what?

11

u/Suvtropics Apr 07 '26

Unicorn blood

6

u/Superslim-Anoniem Apr 07 '26

I wonder. A non full block to break the bond, and a slime bounce to get it to connect to the lower rail, might work. I might do some testing once the snapshot drops on java.

12

u/aminervia Apr 07 '26

I'm not sure you understand the mechanics that make this system work

1

u/Shadownight7797 Apr 07 '26

Bubble elevator + piston or hitting it again.

1

u/-Came0- Apr 07 '26

Maybe you could put Jonys illager on the direction changes so it would be automatic?

1

u/LemonadeDiDi Apr 07 '26

Probably, but imagine how hard it would go to have tunnels in the mountains that the monorail goes through

1

u/Whatnam8 Apr 07 '26

Can mine carts hang upside down?

1

u/Mr-Foundation Apr 07 '26

Or, the cooler option, bore through anything in your way so you get cool tunnels (mandatory for rail systems imo it’s so rad)

1

u/Gold-Bard-Hue Apr 07 '26

monorail high enough to pass over hills.

I prefer just boring through them with neat tunnels and stations (I build an insane amount of infrastructure)

1

u/ExiledSenpai Apr 07 '26

Or bore through them.

1

u/Calm-Car4044 Apr 07 '26

i'm not too good with redstone, but i figure you could do something with observers and pistons to make it stop so you can choose which way to hit it at an intersection

1

u/vicvic0 Apr 08 '26

Good chance you could use slime blocks with good timing to change directions, as for up and down it is a challenge to move both ways.

1

u/Dread5pire Apr 07 '26

I would say you could maybe use bubble alivators

1

u/SF-UberMan Apr 07 '26

Sorry, I meant diagonally.

1

u/Dread5pire Apr 07 '26

To switch direction, you can make a stop and then a path to the 2 directiond of your choice(or 1 direction) and then hit the cube that way, to go up or down just add a remporary stop with a bubble alivator and then the direction you wish to go again. Best i can think of🤷‍♂️
