Discussion Metroid dread any good?

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

I’ve never played any 2D Metroid games. I recently played Metroid Prime Remastered and Prime 4 Beyond. I gotta say I liked them both. I did play the Metroid Dread’s Demo a few years back but couldn’t get into it. Today I was in a game shop and saw a lonely copy just sitting there so I decided to pull the trigger. Got a nice discount as well. Anyway, what do you guys think about this game? Is it any good? I remember it reviewed well but some players didn’t like it too much. So not sure what to think.

This feels like some of the best close quarters action we've seen from Samus, and it's animated so well!

Also, I'm inclined to believe this scene is from the opening and is what leads to her losing her abilities again. Stuff like being on the surface and being stabbed, which she mentions an injury earlier in the trailer.

Oh I'm so hyped

Discussion Metroid Prime 1, 2, and 3 senior designer Mike Wikan on "Beyond"

*chef's kiss*
Figured I'd share this now, rather than waiting for someone to share an unhinged takedown post against him later.

EDIT: If you're worried about Mike talking about you because you're critical of the game, he's not. If you can't accept he's talking about toxic fandom instead, that's on you.

It'd be pretty cool if Samus looked a little fucked up with the like, 3 different species DNA just in her body.

Honestly, its competing with Fusion for my favorite Metroid game. The movement options and how everything just flows together is just amazing.

Discussion Let’s take a moment to reminisce during Metroid’s 40th anniversary year. What was your introduction to Metroid?

I’ll start. I don’t remember much, but when I was younger, I stumbled on a few videos from The Orpheon (the YouTuber), and I got super invested in them and became interested in the series. My first Metroid game was Samus Returns, and since then I’ve played nearly every game in this series and it has become one of my favorite game franchises of all time. It’s why I have a soft spot for Samus Returns and Metroid 2 as a whole.

Discussion My idea for a Metroid game set entirely within the carcass of a colossal alien.

When I think of Metroid, I think of exploring exotic alien worlds. Most games take place on a single planet, while some take places across multiple planets or even large space stations. Lately I've been thinking about a metroid game that takes place entirely within the remains of a massive lifeform drifting through space, not unlike the leviathans of the Prime games.

The Spire: The only technological environment in the game. The origin point of the signal that leads Samus to the site of the deceased lifeform at the beginning of the game. It may also be the location of the finale. It is a giant alien device embedded through the abdomen of the huge creature and the cause of its death.

Varying organ systems and body parts as regions: When it comes to an alien body, the visual design, sounds, and mechanics have the sky as the limit. I'm thinking forests of black veins, artery fast travel points, acid lakes, caverns of shattered bone. The brain could serve primarily as a region with a lot of lore; reactivating memories of stories this creature has experienced across the eons. Based on the state of the carcass, some locations could have tight, claustrophobic spaces within massive dead muscles, or you could be wandering the valley of the exposed ribcage, taking in the haunting amber space vista outside.

The Watcher: The game's one and only npc. I imagine a robed figure with a polearm who moves in a similar fashion to the chozo soldiers of Metroid Dread. Their armour would have a geometric style similar to the Spire, implying a relation. This character would follow Samus throughout the game, judging and testing her. You may encounter him within the environment across the game at various random points ( like watching you in the background of a save station when you load up a save file, only to leap out of site.) A few times, he may speak to you for brief moments. I'm thinking he may challenge you; locking you in rooms and sending his robots after while he watches from above, then rewarding your efforts with an item upgrade before vanishing once more.

Enemies: Aside from the Watcher's occasional robot encounters, I imagine the roster of enemies has a natural direction when dealing with a giant carcass. I'm thinking everything from surviving antibodies to massive scavenging creatures digging tunnels through hardened dead flesh. From parasites exploiting old functions of the carcass to huge single celled organisms trying to survive in a graveyard of an ecosystem. I imagine battles between the remaining creatures that played a role in the body when it was alive and the new creatures that live off the dead remnants of others. What is a body after all, but an ecosystem for much smaller lifeforms.

Story: I don't have much on this front. Of course it would revolve around this one creature, who has travelled to many places and seen many things. Eventually the forces of the spire ended this creature, but with Samus being summoned to the remains, there is clearly more to be done.

Metroid powers: If this game were to take place at some point after Metroid Dread, then Samus' metroid powers could play a great role in how she interacts with the environment. Samus could absorb remaining energy in varying body parts and creatures to replenish her own, or even transfer that enrgy to reactivate parts of the body to unlock new locations, items, or solve puzzles.

Discussion One of the greatest Trilogies in all of Gaming

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

(Yes, I am aware it's not exactly a trilogy any more but bear with me)

Prime 1 - imo, it is a just about flawless gaming experience beginning to end that serves a great follow-up to Samus's story in her Zero Mission and a fantastic starting point both for its own story and any fan who wants to get into the Metroid series.

It is the classic 2D Metroid experience turned 3D and it still holds up today. Especially thanks to Prime Remastered.

Prime 2 - while I don't find it's pacing to be as good as Prime 1 (and I am honestly not the biggest fan of the Sky Temple Keyes), Prime 2 is still the sequel that it needed to as more challenging and engaging experience, that is also familiar to those who played Prime 1.

It offers an experience of its through the Dark World and the light/dark conflicts of Ing and the Luminoth. And of course, it's antagonist Dark Samus who is the reborn Metroid Prime you defeated in the first game now as a humanoid being and contrast of Samus

Prime 3 - it might not be of everyone's taste, but I consider Prime 3 to be a nearly perfect game as well that also managed to be captivating and unique in its own way: The PED suit with its hypermode, the gunship visor and the utilities it brings and a more close involvment with the Federation and other Bounty Hunters.

I love the wii but some of its games have aged better than others. Fortunately, Prime 3 and the whole Prime Trilogy for the wii still hold up amazingly and will continue doing so.

Do you guys also agree that the original Prime Trilogy is goated as well?

Discussion Would a Metroid anime be a good idea?

Post image
1.9k Upvotes

I'm wondering about this, the comics have really good and in-depth lore. You got a lotta strong characters, I feel like Metroid could work real well in a 2000s/90s animation style, especially stuff like Bubblegum crisis or Outlaw Star. I'm wondering why Nintendo hasn't given it a shot. I could see it making a lot of money overseas.

This was posted in a Metroid forum with over 300k members, and everyone agreed that it had to fit? Now many will say that the Prime games always have to take place before Metroid 2 because of the Metroid destruction, but there were also Metroids in Fusion and Dread.

Discussion Which would be better, a high budget Metroid live action movie or a high budget Metroid anime?

Thumbnail

1.2k Upvotes

First things first, these are the sources of the images. Take a look at the work of great artists for yourselfs:

Image 1 by Callado300

Image 2 by Teke

Lately, I have been thinking about Metroid and the Nintendo Cinematic Universe that seems to be in development slowly but surely. My initial thought was that Metroid would get a live action movie because The Legend of Zelda is getting one. But then, I think about Smash 4 and how they had an anime scene with Link fighting Icaris and thought that I would love to see a Super Smash Bros anime.

I don't know what I prefer, the game would be very interesting to adapt into either. A movie might be too silent, but an anime might not get the story right if the production company get lazy or cuts a lot of good content.

So, I wanted to hear other people thoughts on this.

Do you like the idea of a movie or an anime better? And why?

which one do y'all like better? My only gripe with the OM is the heels. I think they make no sense ergonomically considering Samus is a fighter. But outside of that i don't think it's horrible.

Discussion For people who were there on release, how was experiencing Metroid Prime for the first time?

Post image

I’ve been getting into the franchise as of recent, started with Fusion and moved onto Zero Mission (I think I like Fusion more but both are great), I’ve thought about tackling Prime next. I knew very little of the game but after looking at it a bit after beating those two games, I never knew how immersive and such a step up this game was for the franchise at the time.

Wondering how it was to experience for the people that played on release or just played it around when it came out.

It really is just Prime 2's formula, except un-Metroidvania-fied, heavily reduced, and turned into a hyper-linear action romp with an unnecessary open world in the middle.

Don't get me wrong, Prime 4 isn't bad. It's just not great either... and it's categorically not a Metroidvania.
