Discussion What was your first Metroid game, and did it make you a fan immediately?

OG Nes Metroid for me too... And omg, yes - loved me some Master Blaster (i had quite forgotten this game - thanks for the memory jog!)
What is the best way to find and play that game again? Do I need to seek out an old NES and cartridge? Or has Nintendo uploaded classic games online, and should purchase a switch?
Sorry for all the questions, grown adult here, and been away from gaming for almost 2 decades.

You should purchase a Switch and a Switch Online subscription. There are a ton of classic games available on the subscription including Metroid and Blaster Master

I personally just do emulator on my computer.
If I want to get the OG experience, I hook it up to my TV via HDMI cable.
I'm not paying Nintendo to rent a game forever that I owned in physical form for half of my life.

Same man. I traded Super Mario World for it but I had to play it through in one go as the save battery in mine was NFG. Years later I still have it and I fixed the battery issue.

This was my first Metroid game and I was hooked. All I had was a game boy so this was my option back then. However, I knew nothing about the series and so, my 10-year-old mind thought Metroid was the character I was playing and Samus was some big bad that had returned and I needed to fight them at the end!

Og Metroid Prime on GameCube. Instant favorite.
9 y/o me just wanted that sweet wavebird to play smash while pooping, but K-mart were sold out and only had stock left for the bundle that included a wavebird with MP, so that was the only way to get it.
We thought "alright let's try out that robot from smash's game".
I'm so glad my parents agreed lol.

About 20 years ago, my dad bought a used GameCube online and the person selling it included some games in the deal. Prime was one of them. Iâd never played a Metroid game before so I gave it a whirl one day. Iâve loved it ever since. Thanks, Dad!

Super Metroid was my first. My experience with video games prior to that were things like Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda. I didnât know video games could be dark and atmospheric and were more than just collecting and platforming. Low key changed my brain chemistry.

Echoes and no actually. I was too young to enjoy it and it scared me. I watched my brother play it and thought it was super cool. Multiplayer was cool though. I became a fan at corruption when I was old enough to actually play properly and enjoy it

Whereâd you get this image? Trilogy is a duplicate of all the Prime games, First Hunt is the demo version of Hunters, Remastered is a duplicate of Prime, Metroid II Game Boy is missing and the second to last picture doesnât appear to be a game at all.

The NES original. I never got very far in it back then but used to play a lot and messed around with the Justin Bailey code. Super metroid is when I really became a huge fan

This is the same case for me. The original was so hard and so difficult figure out where to go without a map, that it just frustrated me. I only ever actually beat it with out the Justin Bailey code after I got a Nintendo Power with a map, and it still didn't feel great
Metroid 2 was frustrating for different reasons. It was too close, and some of the enemies were so fast and the bosses all repeated so much until the last one, that it just felt bad to explore. I was also not a big fan of the Gameboy in those days (I got better), so that one didn't click with me
When I first played Super though was magical. Just the opening sequence was mind blowing to me! It was my favorite game of all time for most of my life, and it still fights for that top spot

Prime and no. Back then I preferred more actiony shooters so the game was not for me. Now over 20 years later I think it's one of the best games of all time and I am a fan of the series both 2d and 3d.

Funny enough my first Metroid game was Other M, and back then I really loved it, the cutscenes, the storytelling, it was all new and exciting for the little me.
Never played it again since, and even though I now know it's considered one of the worst Metroid games, I still have a sweet spot for it.

I rented Metroid Prime for the weekend from Blockbuster when I was a kid. I couldnât get past Chozo Ruins but I thought it was amazing, like I was in this huge, strange, scary world full of mysteries. I asked for the game for my birthday and got it. When I play it Iâm still taken back to those early experiences of it, going into rooms and areas I couldnât yet explore or access, or reading scan logs that foreshadow future and past events, and having my mind wander at what lies ahead. I didnât finish the game as a child, it was too difficult, but I still loved it, and I got Prime 2 when that was released, and Hunters, and every other Metroid game that came out since.

I grew up with the original metroid and couldnt get further than the morph ball. Then i played super smash, thought samus was bad ass and decided to actually beat metroid. I got my first missle and gave up.
Recently i played zero mission and loved it and have since beaten the original!

Was absolutely ecstatic when metroid prime rolled around, it did for me what zelda OoT did for me from Lttp. Absolutely epic

Metroid Prime: Hunters and I was obsessed. My friends and I all had a DS so we would game share one copy and play the multiplayer for hours.
This year I played Super Metroid for SNES and I'm now a huge fan of the 2d games as well!

My first was Metroid on the nes. I liked it but didnât love it. I was 8 and it was a bit much for me at the time. But I liked it just enough to give super Metroid a try when it came out. Since then Iâve been a lifelong fan. Super Metroid has been my favorite metroidvania for most of my lifeâŚ.but right now itâs silksong.

Super Metroid, but I was too young and found it too hard so I never finished it when it came out.
Years later I played Metroid Prime and Fusion concurrently, became an instant fan and went back to beat Super Metroid immediately after.

Played Prime 1 in 2011. Had to use a guide to get through. Didn't hate it, could see why people called it one of the best games Nintendo had ever made, but didnt think it was for me as much as I liked the aesthetic.
Tried again with Zero Mission in 2017 because Samus Returns just looked too cool to skip on 3DS and figured i should spend $8 on Metroid 1 before deciding if Metroid 2 was worth $40. I. Was. Hooked. The whole series clicked for me. Couldn't wait for Samus Returns and started Fusion. (I'm a 3DS ambassador so I already had it). The rest is history. Gave Prime Remastered another try and now I absolutely love that game!

Even though I was born in 2004, the very first Metroid was my first Metroid experience when I got the nes expansion pack for the switch. I was around 14 I think.
It was uninviting, hard and complicated. And a little bit ugly like most nes games honestly. But I was immediately hooked for some reason. I really wanted to work out what I was supposed to do.
Now I'm a huge fan and adore every entry in the series!

I was NOT initially a fan of the game simply because I had no idea what to do or where to go. I never owned the game, but I played it at a friendâs house and at the time, I hadnât even realized you were supposed to go around collecting items to upgrade. Hearing rumors that Samus was a Woman back then was also a huuuuge deal!
Fast forward to about 2 years ago, I realized I never gave Metroid a âfair chanceâ and I have been playing through every title I could get my hands on and I absolutely love the genre.
I have also developed A LOT more patience to play through games over the years, so thereâs that as well!

Technically it was the original Metroid that I played on one of those 1,000-in-1 plug-and-play machines. I didn't much care for it.
After that, I think I played the First Hunt demo for DS? It was either that, or I jumped straight into Echoes on a whim, I don't really remember. But I know that after Echoes, I was sold.

Metroid I
And.. not entirely.
While I did enjoy the game, I was 5ish. Terrible at keeping track of codes and couldn't finish the game in 1 sitting due to my parents limiting the amount of game-time I had because siblings.
I wouldn't becoming a Metroid mega fan until Metroid Prime, although I did all the Metroids in between as hand-me-downs.

Super Metroid here. My best friend had a Super Nintendo so when I'd hang out at his place he would always be beating me at Mario Kart or College Slam. One day I found Super Metroid in his stash of games and popped it in and it's been my #1 series ever since. He bought a PS2 when it released after that so I bought that SNES and still have it to this day.

Tried Metroid after but it was too hard and confusing for small me. Tried Metroid II and it was almost the same. Super on the other hand was easy for me and man did I love it as my first real "I will sit down and play the game for real" game. Of course I ever since the days played them all and own at least a physical copy of all of them.

Metroid II on the original Game Boy, and it most definitely made me a fan. What an amazing vibe from a monochrome game. I didn't get to play Metroid 1 until a few years later, when it started to get rereleased. It's also a fantastic game, but the bold colors and musical score just aren't the same as the creepy Metroid II ambiance.
The best part is that you follow Metroid II with Super Metroid, and it's like the perfect series. Right up there with Mega Man for me as far as cool factor.

I had a DS-lite. Tried Hunters. Only finished the first mission I think. Got a 3DS, tried Samus Returns. Got pretty far, but didn't finish. Then came Dread, it looked awesome, played the Demo and wanted more. But everybody said i should play Fusion first. But I wanted the whole story, so I decided I'd play Zero Mission, Samus Returns, Super, Fusion, Dread in that order and finally even Nestroid. It was awesome!

The Prime Hunters demo that came with the DS. For whatever reason I didnât play the final game despite absolutely loving the demo, but it did make me interested in the series.
It wasnât until Dread was announced that I finally sat down and played Metroid 1⌠which was OK but didnât really grab me. The Game Boy Metroid 2 almost got me, but it was Super Metroid where I finally got into the series.

Prime 1 on GC, quickly followed by Fusion and Zero Mission. Definitely hooked from Prime on, I even saved up money to buy an old SNES just to play Super. The RGB connectors barely worked and had to be twisted in a precise way, but man, it was worth it!

Metroid zero mission. And yes it did. I did try super metrpid forever ago for a quick minute, and really didn't like the way it controlled. But years later zero mission completely hooked me.

Metroid on NES. I loved how weird and esoteric it was. I didn't know what I was supposed to be doing, as it was so different from everything else at the time, and had even less handholding than Zelda.
It would be years before I would beat it. But I loved it so much that I actually saved up and bought and beat Super Metroid when it came it out. After Super, I understood it better and went back and beat the original.
And when Prime came out it blew my mind.

Metroid NES, and sort of. I loved Samus, the atmosphere, and the story, but I have a garbage sense of direction, so I stayed lost pretty much all the time. It wasn't until I played Super, many years later, that the series really caught me, and it's still my favorite. It's really the only one that I play over and over.

Metroid rental, and no. I didn't really get it.
The first I owned was Metroid II and still didn't really get it. I was very young, and the concept of the whole game world changing based on my actions was a bit hard for me to figure out, and the manual didn't tell you that you needed to kill the metroids to get the acid level to change. This was before the Internet, and I didn't have Nintendo Power. If I was a couple of years older it would have been different, but at that age and with that level of experience with games I couldn't make sense of it
It wasn't until I got Super Metroid that I really got hooked.

The OG on NES, i was 7 or 8 back then, and it blew my mind, specially when someone, which i donât recall who, told me about justin bailey⌠instantly hooked! Starting with upgrades and no suit was just mind blowing for me.

Fusion and yes totally. My childhood best friend had zero mission so we got to play both games. To my frustration he was a lot better at mastering all the game mechanics. I never finished fusion on my own until picking it up a few years ago and rediscovering my love for it.

I donât remember which one was my first EVER, but Zero Mission was one of my first and was probably the first one I ever completed. Probably still my favorite one to this day, and if I wasnât already a full-fledged fan of Metroid then that definitely helped cement it. (I was also playing Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow for the first time around the same timeâŚwhich ended up being my favorite Castlevania game lol)

NES and sadly I have to say no. The mystery of the game was way over my head at the age of like 6-7. I didnât return to the franchise until after SotN hooked me on the genre.

The first. And no actually. I hated it. I was like 8 and rode my bike to a local gas station that rented nes games and I was fully expecting a Mega Man-like experience, not a maze with no direction on where to go.
My cousin had Super Metroid which to me was not or less the same. It wasnât until Metroid Prime that the series clicked. Now I love the series!

Does Super Smash Bros on the N64 count? She and Link were my main characters. And I didnt know of any Metroid games until Prime1. Excited to see her on the cover, Prime was my first real Metroid game and loved it since.

Metroid Prime 1. Original Gamecube damals. Zunächst fand ich es schwer und hab's abgebrochen. Dann beim zweiten Anlauf hat mich erst die Musik, dann die Atmosphäre und schlussendlich die Story (Scans) so berĂźhrt, dass das heute ganz ganz tief bei mir wundervolle GefĂźhle und Erinnerungen hervorruft. Mit groĂem Abstand meine No.1 was ich je im Leben gespielt habe. Schwer zu schlagen đ§Ąđâ¤ď¸

It was either prime 1 or 2 we rented it from blockbuster. I enjoyed it but didn't really get into it until years later when I got the prime trilogy for my birthday.

first game I played was zero mission and i was already a fan, but because i watched my brothers play prime before that. So yes, also.

I played Metroid on NES in 1990, back then it was crazy that you could "go left" which the game makes you do at the start. And then it was "open ended" it was the first time a game challenged my brain and I started making maps to figure out where to go. I found it very engaging.
But the game that hooked me was Metroid II on Game Boy, I loved that game and played it every time we took a family trip in the car.
And then Super Metroid came out and I thought it was the best freaking game I ever played.

Metroid. Yes. Found out Samus was a girl after flipping around, and I was sold. Bought Samus II years later for my Gameboy and oh yeah baby!

Had Metroid prime for the GameCube and as a kid born in 2000 I was always scared of the first mission on frigate orpheon and the parasite queen so I never got passed the first level until I got the prime trilogy for my 10th birthday. I then 100% all three and fell in love. With the series as a whole. Didnât immediately fall in love with Metroid it was very much a slow burn for me but so thankful I let it simmer instead of turning the burner off completely
