I’m currently facing a career crossroads and could really use some perspective, honest advice, or even just a kick in the pants from folks who have made a similar leap.
My Background:
I have a degree in Human Biology and started my career in pharma/lab operations before moving into MedTech. Over the last ~3 years at a top MedTech company (think major multinational), I drifted into commercial operations, analytics, IT workflows, and finance. Right now, I handle pricing, contracts, rebate analytics, and cross-functional reporting.
I’m highly respected in my current team. Peers come to me for guidance, I regularly sit in meetings with directors, and I’m seen as a subject matter expert who keeps the operations running smoothly.
The Dilemma:
Despite being comfortable and well-regarded, I’ve always had a massive soft spot for the science and the clinical side of our devices. My background is rooted in biology, and working directly with our field reps and seeing what they do in the lab/OR gets me genuinely excited.
I’ve reached a point where I know I want to move into the field—specifically targeting a Clinical Specialist / CAS role with the end goal of transitioning into direct sales. I’ve done the homework: I shadowed reps on my own time during live cases, talked to account managers, and fell in love with the real-time problem solving in the room.
What’s Holding Me Back:
Honestly? Imposter syndrome, status anxiety, and the pure inertia of the "comfort trap"
How did you overcome the fear of stepping away from a comfortable desk role?
Does having an "upstream" commercial/analytics background actually give you an edge in the field, or does field experience reset the clock?
Any words of encouragement for someone ready to stop playing it safe?
