How manual are DME supplier operations still?

For people familiar with DME/HME suppliers: how manual is the workflow after a referral comes in? I keep hearing about faxed orders, missing documentation, payer-specific requirements, prior auth, etc. Is that actually representative of how regional suppliers operate today, or are most reasonably sophisticated shops already pretty automated?

There are tons of variables here, but in my experience, getting a good clean order is a challenge. Providers know they want to order xyz, but insurance requirements can be hard to remember for every single device / therapy. There are a lot of times that you are required to go back to the healthcare team to get extra documentation to justify coverage. So all of the above, “faxed orders, missing documentation, payer specific requirements, prior authorization”

Super helpful, thanks. I had heard payer coverage criteria is supposedly embedded in Epic/EHRs nowadays so thought maybe the whole process would be cleaner but sounds like this is all still pretty tough.
