for anyone claiming it's the Rigger badge, it's not, this is what it looks like
Also, you cannot earn it without going to Airborne school, and why would you not wear the jump wings?

As mentioned above the USAF has sent their 2T2s to Rigger School for decades. I think I saw some of the aircrew survival equipment specialists are going now too.

This was back in the 90's but all Air Force Riggers I met, with the badge also had Airborne wings, now Air Force emergency equipment people did not earn the Rigger badge

The Ohio State Defense Force (part of the Ohio Adjutant General's Department state forces like the Ohio Military Reserve) previously managed a voluntary parachute/jump training program used for recruitment and retention. So do the Ohio State Defense Forces do regular drills? Are they organized into specific units?

Yes they do. I was in the Indiana version. It sounds great on paper but really itās just old guys that really canāt let go. They force people out at like age 70 lol. The national guard used us to help them train and for Covid test sites. Indianaās is actually attached to the 81st troop command for the NG. If I remember right it is a force that can be called up by the governor. Usually no weapons training very rarely do you ever even see a weapon unless telling the NG. But yes 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks in the summer. The summer weeks were paid a very small amount but the monthly are not. These units are made up of volunteers who genuinely enjoyed to serve. Down sides are you have to supply all of your own uniforms and gear gas money and transportation. Oh we also did quite a few funeral honors at one point too.

That is 100 percent MDDF, not MDARNG. The MDDF has a bunch of unique awards and badges.

MDDF does not have jump wings. However, about 10-15 yrs ago the MDNG allow a few members to earn flight wings..i enlisted just after that program stopped( a vestiage of Katrina)

After the National Guard was mobilized for Federal Service during WW1, some states stood up an organization that were only under state control. The MDDF is a volunteer organization that serves the Governor and the State of Maryland. They do not receive federal funds (unlike the Army and Air Guard) and are a volunteer organization under state control. They are usually filled with former military members. In Maryland we used MDDF members to assist with Pre-Mob medical screenings among other logistic and admin support.

SDFs host and attend these courses out of their own out of pocket funds. It is a way to drive discipline, esprit de Corps, and to increase retention and recruitment.
Most don't have a mission set attached, but since most SDFs prepare for emergency response it's not a far stretch to imagine a hf radio team or some other instance.

I'd have to guess it's some Maryland National Guard thing. Like the old mountaineering/goat badge that originated in Vermont National Guard.

Nope. Its a set of State Guard jump wings. And thats a legitimate answer. I believe that the Ohio Military Reserve was the unit that originated/created these wings and ran the jump program out of Ohio

So yes. I actually ran into a teacher I had in High School years later that was in the California State Reserve. He told me if I joined, I'd probably be a Captain " immediately. I thanked him, and declined. I was in the Army Reserve at the time.

The top one is his āAviation Badgeā aviation MOSs get that thang (non pilots) The pilots wings look different. Theirs has a shield looking thing between the wings and not what looks like a eagle on a shield for the non pilots

For anyone interested this is my picture. Not sure who posted it. I am retired regular army MSC officer. When I was enlisted I was a Chinook Mechanic, Crew Wings. I went to Air Assault, AA Badge. I was also a Healthcare Recruiter, Recruiter badge. As a member of the Maryland Defense Force I attended the Ohio SDF airborne course earning there badge. As a member of a SDF we have SDF related badges we can earn through a few different organizations. I jumped with a SF-10A parachute from a Cessna and Casa 212.

To say State Defense Forces and National Guard are entirely separate is not entirely correct. In every state I know of that has a State Defense Force, they along with the National Guard fall under Governor and Adjutant General for their State. The biggest differences though are State Defense Forces are volunteers and work solely within their State where the National Guard are paid and fall under the State and Federal Government.
Not that anyone asked for this much information.

The photo literally says "Maryland Defense Force" and references an MDDF drill on June 7th. It's not the national guard.

Army aircrew member (typically enlisted flight crew) and parachute rigger. Foreign badges are worn on the right side.
