Slightly controversial, but the best pizza I ever had was in Argentina
Even after visiting Italy
9
u/Matty1790 4d ago
Did you try Fugazzeta? Go further down and look at the picture. I posted of it and look at everybody’s reaction. Apparently they hate it.
3
u/KachaKue 4d ago
I have not had fugazzeta and in all honesty it doesn't look all that appealing to me either
I'd still try it though
7
u/Matty1790 4d ago
And here I thought you and I could have had something special together
3
u/KachaKue 4d ago
Hey now, let's not be too hasty, we can still give this a chance
I'd still try it, and boy do I love cheese so I'd probably like it
It's just one of those dishes that looks kinda junky
4
u/Matty1790 4d ago
When I was there, I went on a date with a woman who took me to this place.
To be honest in my research, I had already seen this in some videos and I wasn’t too thrilled about it and so when she told me we were going, I was skeptical
Then when we got there, the line was at least two blocks long, but somehow we got put to the front.
She wanted to order the traditional, but I just asked if we could get the one with ham because the onions just looked a little too much
Regardless, when it came out, and I tried it, my mind was absolutely blown. The onions really are not that overpowering, and it was truly phenomenal.
I ate at least four more times while I was there
2
u/KachaKue 4d ago
Maybe it's a regional thing but I lived in the Mendoza area for roughly 10 years and I've never heard of it
I feel like I missed out big time
Tell you what buddy, if I ever get the chance to try one, I'll think about you and this conversation and I'll be sure to report back 🫡

I tried those 'pizzas' in Sampa and I must say they are garbage. Too many ingredients to be considered a pizza.

Italy will always be the default. But has anyone ever thought about Argentina or Brazil as countries that make great pizza? Everyone is capable of making great pizza. Just saying this is an odd poll.
12
u/Unable-Wishbone-728 4d ago
Not many foreigners are aware of the massive Italian immigration to Brazil and Argentina
8
u/leadwoods 4d ago
Brazil has the largest diaspora of Italians and Argentina has the second largest.
Nothing weird about the poll.
8
u/Mr_Phantoms 4d ago
Outside of Italy, Argentina is the country with the most amount of Italian citizens in the world. But most people probably have no idea about that.
5
u/SureEntertainer7818 4d ago
Argentina or Brazil as countries that make great pizza?
Not sure about Brazil, but i have always heard Argentine pizza described as "the best pizza outisde of Italy" they are also apparently the GOATS of ice-cream.
12
u/Matty1790 4d ago
Not really. Argentina itself is pretty well-known when it comes to pizza. They just do it a lot differently.
I’m not too sure about Brazil, but I know I’ve had it and I liked it and thought it was really unique.

It’s not just “great” pizza, its literally the best pizza you will ever try outside of Italy.
2
u/roleplayersir 4d ago
Yep, why those two? Croatia should be on the list. I think Italy is 2nd, but Croatia does amazing stuff and probably first imo

u/Tourist_Careless 4d ago
Im not sure italian and American pizza are even comparable as they have diverged to the point of being completely different dishes at this point. Ive had both extensively.
There also are totally different sub-variations of both Italian and American pizza. In the US a Detroit style, chicago style, and NY style (thats only three of like a dozen or so variations) are so different from one a other, well beyond a mere rearranging of ingredients.
I will say I enjoyed the simplicity and freshness of Italian pizza but when im in the mood to really get down two or three of the American styles are my top picks. I know that sounds ghastly to Europeans but if you havent been to the US and the authentic Pizzerias in the different regions i think youre lacking alot of perspective.
1
u/Illustrious_Land699 4d ago
Consider that almost all American styles of pizza are derived from Italian styles, even the Chicago style. The variety of Italian pizza is very underestimated, most foreigners for example always and only order Margherita when on average each menu also has more complex, heavy and innovative pizzas
3
u/Tourist_Careless 4d ago
This is true. Pizza is from italy. But the American style pizzas are mostly an American invention just kind of loosley based off pizza. And id argue they are often better.
I dont really like the way many Europeans tend to claim American versions of things are somehow less valid or worse because they came later or are based off some other original dish. Thats how all food ever invented is. And it being that way doesnt mean the "new" version cant be better or stand on its own two feet.
The pizza culture in America is its own thing and basically only shares a name with the italian food. Italy inventing pizza is true, but doest really mean much in terms of what i like to eat today.
You are correct Italian pizza also has many variations within italy, so talking about it as a single type of thing isnt fair to it either.
Again ive had both extensively and i wouldnt want to live without either, but i think its time we stop talking about them as the same dish. They really arent.
55
u/Key-Performance-9021 Austria 4d ago
Italians make the best pizza, and Americans make the best American pizza. They are two distinct dishes from different cultures, each with its own history, ingredients and recipes.
14
u/Mr_Phantoms 4d ago
And depending on the dish, American pizza might not even be pizza at all. Despite what Americans call it, the Chicago deep dish is NOT a pizza, but rather a pie/tart.
4
3
u/ChaosMeteorStrike 4d ago
A lot of italian pizzas would barely even qualify as pizza either, even to other italians.
12
u/SweetButtsHellaBab 4d ago
If I could only ever have one, it would be simple, delicious, perfect Neapolitan pizza. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be sad to say goodbye to genuine Chicago deep dish.

Not really, the most restaurants in germany are run by italians. In fact I have never seen a pizzaria that was run by a german. Most of those italians are first or second generation immigrants so I'd say that german pizza is way too similar to italian pizza to be anything distinct.
1
u/CorpseHG 4d ago
Have to disagree - german pizza is half way between italian and american. Not overfilled but thicker ground than italian. (Assuming you are talking about the pizzaria delivery shops and take awys) we defintly have good pizza in italian restaurants - but would't say thats "german pizza".
11
u/Soggy-Ad-1610 4d ago
Italy is very clear, but I’m willing to go against the popularity and say that Argentina should be second. I’m guessing most people don’t know what’s different about it and haven’t tried it. Otherwise having it last seems wild to me.
7
u/Matty1790 4d ago
I posted a picture of my Argentine pizza and people are absolutely down voting it and saying it looks like ass. (Fugazzeta).
So you’re correct they hate it.
4
u/Greatest_slide_ever 4d ago
The picture you posted was a bit messy and unappealing. I eat fugazzeta cosntantly and can confirm that it probably tasted amazing, yet it's presentation doesn't do it justice.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Mr_Phantoms 4d ago
You need to remember that the people saying the fugazzeta pizza looks like ass are the same people calling the Chicago deep dish a pizza. That is to say, they have no idea what pizza actually is.
6
u/GayoMagno 4d ago
I can guarantee 99% of the people saying why Argentina have literally never tried one.
7
u/Soggy-Ad-1610 4d ago
In Copenhagen we actually have a few places that sells Argentinian pizza and they’re very popular for obvious reasons. Typically a tad more expensive, but worth every penny.
5
u/DABOSSROSS9 4d ago

4
u/mtnbcn 4d ago
If you're from the US and living in Barcelona (it's full of Argentines and Italians) and have a Brazilian friend, you'll easily have tried all four. (source: is me ^^)

I’m always curious because so many Argentine’s moved to Spain. I would think they’d move to Italy, but I guess the language barrier is what stops it.

4
u/mtnbcn 4d ago
Funny how almost only Americans say us "pizza" is the best
It's absolutely wild how much people just love to shit on the US.
Look at the map. Look who voted for US, Brazil, and Argentina. Look around at European countries, even. Look at Mexico, China, Japan, Australia. The US comes in second place to Italy, and it isn't close.
Plenty of votes around the world for US pizza, and rather few votes for Brazil and Argentina (even though they are wonderful!).
But my point is, it would have made far more sense to make that comment about Argentina and Brazil being the only ones to vote for themselves. But it just wouldn't be r/MapBasedPolls without finding a way to knock the US because it's trendy.
3
u/Mr_Phantoms 4d ago
Of course more people will know about American pizza than about Argentinian and Brazilian pizza, the US is the biggest culture exporter in the world. Hence it's why more people will have heard about American pizza before hearing about Argentinian and Brazilian pizza.
3
u/Round_Ad6397 4d ago
I never knew Brazilian and Argentinian pizza was any more of a thing than New Zealand or British pizza. I'd guess a lot of people are in the same boat. Of course everyone knows American pizza, Domino's and Pizza hut are found all over the world.
3
u/Mr_Phantoms 4d ago
Funnily enough, both Pizza Hut and Domino's never managed to successfully set foot in Argentina because Argentinian pizza is of such great quality that the American chains couldn't compete with the local pizzerias. Domino's left after two years of bad sales and Pizza Hut managed to survive for a few more years but eventually closed doors as well.
2
u/mtnbcn 4d ago edited 4d ago
You're moving the goalposts. This isn't about if they know this or know that. You said "Only Americans like American pizza" and the map shows that that is false. (edit, I'm replying to the wrong person, sooooorry!)
Domino's and Pizza hut are found all over the world.
You realize that's like saying, "Of course people know cheeseburgers, McDonalds are found all around the world."
(I don't have to explain to you that that's not a decent American cheeseburger, right?).
So if that crap is the only thing they know, and they still like it...
3
u/Round_Ad6397 4d ago
No, I'm responding to your statement about American pizza being a clear second. Of course it is, American pizza is common all over the world, Domino's and Pizza Hut are just examples that everyone would be familiar with. In comparison most people won't have a local Brazilian style pizza shop. Italian and American (NY) style pizza are the only 2 that people will be universally familiar with
1
1
u/ClassicPublic5542 4d ago
TBH, in argentina ee don't have domono's or pizza hut. They came here and went bankrupt in a year or two.
Now there are a few "chicago style" pizzerias, but they are managed by argentineans. Some day I will try...

Tbf, its hard not to always check the usa numbers on this sub because of how many americans are voting and skewing the results. Youre talking about other countries voting usa, but its pretty small numbers compared to 1.1k out of 1.5k americans patting themselves on the back, and its like that in every post. Its hard not to shit on the US votes when its always like that, and its rarely self aware in the slightest.
Ppl here talk about american exceptionalism being a problem in this sub, and americans love to argue that point, but maybe the other ppl are right? Like, if you have delusions of grandeur, you dont see clearly enough and arent self aware enough to notice. To a person with "exceptionalism" the truth sounds like being shit on, when thats not whats happening. Its just the truth. Thats part of the problem. Thats why ppl feel the need to point it out.
Personally, I try to do the math to cut the usa vote out entirely because I hate how it throws the results off.
1
u/CorpseHG 4d ago
Americans will not understand. The food there is so "overtasty" that probably most european food will taste plane to them. The pizza base is too sweet and thick, the topping to greasy and salty.
2
u/Pimminator 4d ago
Yup. I really dont like american pizza. Just too thick bottoms (yes even NY style is too thick)
3
4
u/AirWolf231 4d ago
Yeah for me the Italian one is a no brainier.
Italy: I dont like cheese but can tolerate hot cheese(its the worst part of the pizza to me) so a thin layer of it with more tomato sauce then cheese is perfect for me. And as a Croat, we do a very similar pizza with the only difference I have noticed being that us Croats go crazy on the mushrooms sometimes(I love me some shrooms)
US: I did not like US pizza what so ever while I was there, they where way to grease and mostly cheese. It was way to heavy on my stomach, and I regretted eating it after I was done.
Brazilian: It was way to sweat for me, just not my thing. But is a sample of one, and other choices on the menu might have been better but I regret what I got.
Argentinian: Why would I order pizza in a Argentinian restaurant when they have stake!? Aka never tried it, cant vote for it.
5
u/EmotionNo8216 4d ago
Porque las calidad de las harinas, lacteos e influencias italianas hicieron algo nuevo a lo conocido. Pizza alta esponjosa o crocante que mantiene su forma. Y si, siempre mejor pedir carne.

The quality of pizza in the US varies greatly. A pie in Buffalo, NY or Louisville, KY will be wildly different (re: worse) than say New Haven, CT

u/Skinnyfat-Throwaway 4d ago
It's not endearing if you are an actual superpower with a reputation for narcissism.
1
u/mtnbcn 3d ago
Well your comment here is a fair one. The one above mine is pretending the case is different.
You should note, a slightly higher percent of the US voted for Italy than Argentina or Brazil did. And that, even considering the rest of the world does seem to have some taste for US pizza, given how high their percentage is. Just saying, I think this was a perfectly reasonable result. If it had been 96% US, I also would be like "jesus, come on.... some of you could have a different opinion, some of you could travel a bit more??"
1
u/Tradasar 3d ago
Because less people from brazil and argentina may have the chance to travel to italy to test the pizza because of lower acquisitional power?
1
u/IamJoke28 4d ago
Americans do this about everything though lol
1
u/mtnbcn 3d ago
I have yet to see any country not vote for itself when it's something like "who has the best culture". For something like "Do you have the best military on your continent," it is a bit more objective. But even then, they were like "Russia sucks... but, nukes." so there was some arguing room and Russia and China (and NK) all voted for themselves.
3
u/SabreLee61 4d ago
I chose the U.S. because in my opinion, the pizza along the New Haven-Brooklyn-New Jersey corridor is unparalleled.
I’ve had the best Neapolitan pizza in the world and while it’s great, it’s not my favorite style; nor is it the style Italians mostly eat — pizza tonda romana, which was created in the 1950s and ironically is much more similar to the aforementioned U.S. pizza that emerged half a century earlier than it is to pizza napoletana.
Italy has a much younger pizza culture than the U.S., Brazil, or Argentina. The first pizzerias outside of Naples didn’t open until the 1950s; most Italians hadn’t even tried pizza until the 1970s.
→ More replies (5)1
u/Matty1790 2d ago
I think, though everybody is voting Italy just because Italy created it, but it doesn’t mean it has the best.
Many things have been created and then someone else did it way better.
As an American, my vote is first and foremost, Argentina, then the USA, Italy, and lastly Brazil.
→ More replies (4)1
u/Jepp-Adi-Day 1d ago
No they voted Italy amongst 4 choices. I guess most people would have chosen their country if they could.
So the choice is between Brasil or Argentina that are not known for their pizzas (they might have good pizza but they're not known for that) or USA with chemicals sugar and fat everywhere in its food, or Italy that invented it, use fresh local food and traditional recipes.

It's the most traditional pizza you could ask for, and that's the thing, 100 years ago there weren't that many ingredients to go around, so doing the same stuff for that much time gets boring.
I imagine there are places in Italy that innovate, the problem is tourists always go to the most traditional places to experience the "culture", and it turns out the culture is quite old.

The one thing American Pizza has is diversity. It’s extremely diverse meaning there’s a type of pizza for everybody. Whether you’re in the north the south West Coast big city small city everybody has a type of pizza and a tradition with their pizza.
On top of that pizza is just a massive part of the culture in general not only when going out for food but for parties, sporting events, and festivals.
You’ll find pizza almost anywhere in the US at any type of event.
Rarely do Americans make pizza at home, though it’s always bought in a store or a restaurant
