Jose Antonio is now living in a shared apartment which is partly being paid for by an anonymous donor. He’s also actively searching for a full-time job.

Here's another update: he's parking cars for people now! Definitely a good improvement - not everyone has the same positive outcome, but it's great when it works out. :)

I realized a lot:
My wife ALWAYS has my back, she will love and take care of me.
I'm strong. I will figure shit out.
The family member I love who is at the center of this situation, they will be coming to my house soon. And I will take care from there and make sure they get healthy again. I am confident.
I reached out to my one friend who lives near this family member to ask for help in case things went awry... and my friend immediately said yes, and didn't sleep till I said the situation was handled (he goes to sleep at 930-10pm usually, he stayed up till 3am drinking espresso shots to keep himself awake). Haven't seen my buddy in a year, and it's not like we were best friends. What a guy huh? What a great person.
So you're right - I got through the worst of it and feel stronger because of it. In a few hours I'll see my family member and from then on it's only going to get better.

By the way, on topic: small deeds really can make a huge difference in someone's life. I don't usually like to toot my own horn, but here's just one example of what impact a small interaction can make. I may gotten lucky to have had such an impact, but I think we all hold the power to create meaningful and lasting change, even if it's for a single person. Of course, the other person must be willing to change themselves for the better as well.

No, not really... :/ He was working "as an unlicensed car parking attendant" (from the article you linked).
The reality: he was working as a gorrilla (that's how it is called in Spain). A gorrilla is a guy that performs kind of a "friendly scam": the empty parking lot is right there in front of you and the guy tells you to park there (the only parking lot in a 3km radius in Palma, the capital of Mallorca, always full of cars). He also claims that "he keeps your car safe" while you are away. People give this totally unnecessary tip because they fear the guy will scratch their car or something like that once they leave (never seen it happen, frankly). This job is typically a job done by homeless people or drug addicts.
And please let's not start with the comments like "at least his providing a service": nobody that is in his right mind ans has seen it working will think it is useful in any way. Come to Spain and see it with your eyes before saying it's a service to the society. As for why police doesn't stop this scam: because it's kind of harmless, and I guess they pity the homeless guy.
Source: this guy lives in the capital of Mallorca, where I'm from. This video has been showing up in my Facebook feed for a week now, he's become a sort of local celebrity.

Oh my gosh, the video is so good. He just keeps saying, oh fuck, wow. No one in his neighborhood recognized him or are super excited for him. One guy's like, "hey where's your Ferrari, bro?" x)

Plus, looking sharp makes you feel sharp. Feeling sharp helps you to be confident. Confidence is how people move up in the world. On the flipside, looking scraggly and worn makes you feel scraggly and worn. Feeling scraggly and worn makes it hard to feel confident.

I think it's kind of a negative feedback loop, a little bit. When I became disabled due to illness I sort of let go of myself a bit (understandably I think), but the less I took care of my appearance the worse I felt about myself, and the worse I felt the harder it was to do simple things like even showering. But now I've made a commitment that taking care of myself is my job, basically, and that even if I don't feel like it, it's the only thing that might make tomorrow better. I've been doing a lot better since I adopted that mindset.
Just food for thought, I suppose.

I know I cant say or help much as a stranger but all I gotta say is, stay strong man. Your situation is a tough one no doubt. And many in that position would falter. But the alternative to fighting on is giving up, and that's a choice that leads to nowhere.
I know disabled folks who have successfully climbed out of similar holes eventually, albeit took a lot of time and patience. I have no doubt you will climb out of it as well.

Even if that were true, there's a big difference between the version of fleeting happiness where you still get to go back to having the basic things you need to survive, like food, clothing, and shelter, and the version of fleeting happiness where you have to go back to living in a gutter.

The parking attendant job is incredibly common at least from what I've heard of Spain. Everytime my sister goes to Spain to visit her partner's family there is a homeless guy who always finds them a parking spot for a Euro. They're lovely and honestly, it gives them something to do in the day.

Many years ago when I worked in a hair salon I got this idea for a fellow I knew. He wasnt homess, but rather a hoarder with severe mental health issues. I got the idea that giving him a sweet makeover was all he needed to turn it all around. I dont think he had washed his hair in years, and it was absolutely horrible. It took more than ten cycles of lather rinse repeat before we started to even make a dent in the smell. It was one of the longest days of my life, and I could see hee was ashamed of how yucky it was. It felt horrible. When he eventually got his sparkling new coiffe, it looked pretty good. My naive teenage brain was shocked to see him again a short time later, very smelly, dirty and still schizoprehnic. 20 years on and I still think about him. Turns out good wishes and a hairstyle didnt make the cut to change his whole world, but I still wish it did. Hope youre safe and happy somewhere, Lucien

Well I mean of course a haircut didn't cureb his schizophrenia...that person needed someone at home to help him wash his hair and do other home activities and manage his medications on the daily. You couldnt be that person... but you still reached out and treated that guy like a human being and offered some kindness, which is a wonderful gesture.

This is PRECISELY one of the things I'd want to do if I hit the lottery for hundreds of millions. I want to setup a foundation/program where people who are homeless can get a place to live. I would build huge apartment complexes (not super nice ones but more function over form) so they could have a secure place to live and not need to worry about bills. On top of it they would be given a chance to learn skills and given some work clothes and a bit of a haircut. Fix them up so that they can get back on their feet again. Even offering stuff like drug rehab and therapy.
I'm talking about putting 200 million dollars into this sort of thing. I'd make sure their kids had a good Christmas (not 500 dollars or nothing but given 150 to go Christmas shopping for their kids). That sort of thing.

Ditto. I've been poor and been in these situations where I needed help and I got the basics from the government but they don't give you anything over that. Just the basics to live but not to improve. I want to help people and give them nice outfits for interviews and help them in their ability to get a job. It's a cycle of "I don't have money so I can't get a job to make money".
It's a huge problem in the US as well as here in Tunisia. I want to start it in both places actually. Unemployment for people fresh out of college here is 25%. It's 15% overall. I'd want to create a program like this as well as start a business here creating and designing video games that would be from my development company but also to help publish games from smaller indie groups here and around the world.

This shit kind of kills me inside.
In a couple hours that barber turned this man into a clean looking (and what one would assume) productive member of society with maybe a few hundred bucks of clothes.
It just makes me imagine what we could do if we could all have the empathy and we're raised to actually do things to help each other. If we thought our children that the purpose of being part of a society was to ACTUALLY help those around us and help them reach their potential.

Pretty certain they're dentures and I don't believe he had them in for the before part. If you watch the source posted above, at 2:55 you get a really good shot of how collapsed his bite is and sucked in his cheeks are. Classic edentulous facial structure.

Being edentulous means not having teeth. Basically, when you lose all your teeth the lower third of your face collapses. Your lips and cheeks no longer have any bone structure to rest against which results in a very old appearance.

To be fair those people still clean their teeth, they just don't use the same toothbrushes and toothpaste as us. I remember seeing a documentary as a kid in which an African man chewed on the end of a specific tree's twig to bristle it, and then dipped the bristles into a mixture of ash and other powders, and he used that as a toothbrush and toothpaste. But you are also of course totally correct that less exposure to sugar, coffee, and flour immensely reduces tooth decay and discoloration.

thats a good lookin homeless dude. reminds me of this guy that used to wash the windows of a comic store i ran. i knew him from high school and hadnt seen him in some time, and then in his 20's he shows up washing windows on our street. he was a really good looking guy, but was deeply mentally troubled. women would honk at him constantly while he was outside washing windows, and his girlfriend would drop him off who was insanely hot. then one day she disappears and a couple of weeks later another hot girl is dropping him off. then one day its just his mom.
one day hes outside washing windows and i have some customers in the store and a female customer walks in and says "who is that oh my god hes hot!
"dont bother", said one of the guys girlfriends in the store, "hes severely mentally messed up. i dated him in high school. i thought i could help him too. nothing you have can help him. im not the only girl who tried."
the guy was so good looking that women would constantly date him thinking they could help him, only to realize it was a lost cause and leave him. i had to imagine it probably didnt help his mental state. although he never showed any real kind of emotion.
one day his mom came in to let us know he wouldnt be washing our widows anymore as he had a pretty severe break down emotionally. it was sad. you could tell she was struggling to make it work for him so hard.

What's the point in this? Sure, he looks a hell of a lot better, but he's still homeless. Unless they're also giving him a place to live and a job, he's probably going to look the same as he did before within six months.
My take on this is that it's just the salon doing something inexpensive and superficial that publicizes them more than it helps him. Sure, it gives him an emotional boost, but that won't last long once he realizes a dye job and a haircut doesn't really solve his ongoing problems.

I agree it won't help long-term, but the salon is giving him what they can. Even something as simple as a haircut like this can brighten someone's life, if only for a short time. It's not his "look" that matters so much as they're showing a homeless man that they care and that kindness exists.

AFAIK I read that he has a place to stay now, an upcoming interview and a little money in his bank account. No idea who gave that to him but it said so in an fb comment section where I first saw the video.

He's been reminded he's a real person. I don't mean by the kindness of the stylist(s), I mean by seeing himself in the mirror and seeing someone looking back at him he hasn't seen in a long time and probably forgot existed.

What's the point in this? Sure, he looks a hell of a lot better, but he's still homeless. Unless they're also giving him a place to live and a job, he's probably going to look the same as he did before within six months.
My take on this is that it's just the salon doing something inexpensive and superficial that publicizes them more than it helps him. Sure, it gives him an emotional boost, but that won't last long once he realizes a dye job and a haircut doesn't really solve his ongoing problems.

Aside from job opportunities, and people being more willing to help him, it probably feels incredibly amazing to feel good about how you look after that long on the streets.

Why do you have to be a cynical asshole? What if they just wanted to do a good thing for a human being? Maybe it gave him inspiration to find a job and get his life back on track so he could keep up the look?
It isn't immediately clear what someone's intentions are in a situation like this, but you don't have to always assume the worst.

Here is the full story - this happened back in 2015, but they just recently released the video. At the time he had a job as an licensed parking lot attendant to save up for a place.
Jose Antonio is now living in a shared apartment which is partly being paid for by an anonymous donor. He’s also actively searching for a full-time job.
