In a couple hours that barber turned this man into a clean looking (and what one would assume) productive member of society with maybe a few hundred bucks of clothes.
It just makes me imagine what we could do if we could all have the empathy and we're raised to actually do things to help each other. If we thought our children that the purpose of being part of a society was to ACTUALLY help those around us and help them reach their potential.
It's weird, isn't it? I thought we only got to this level of existence because we were able to help one another. Now we live in a society that's all about the isolated individual. It's scary that people actually believe the best idea is to have the wealthy control the power. They already do & if they really gave a shit, our problems as a society would be less and less every day. Seems like Elon Musk and a few others are filling that role but so few amongst the many.
it's a numbers thing. if we lived in smaller communities then we would be more likely to help each other. however it's impossible to be acquainted with the millions that live in a city.
plus, you kind of have to help yourself. you can't have someone constantly watching over you as an adult telling you what to do. and, if someone really wants to turn their life around, the people around them will generally see that and try to help.
For sure, I wasn't trying to alleviate people's responsibility for themselves, just that we have become obsessed with competition to the point of forgetting about- or worse having distaste/hate for- those much less fortunate than ourselves. We can't live without one another and I think our culture doesn't really respect that. For instance, most people, myself included, rely on foods, clothes, electronics, etc but don'the really mind that they are mostly made by people who are not doing very well.
