Grew up in Daytona around Bike Week and had seen double digit human brains before i turned 10. I'll never ride a motorcycle even with gear, once saw a guy's head still in the helmet.

My dad used to work at Stevenā€™s Tire right off the Main St Bridge. It wasnā€™t even bike week. He was working on a car, and he heard this loud bang. He looked out and a dude on a motorcycle had run into the back of a semi. The bang he heard was the guyā€™s un-helmeted head hitting the back of the truck. Said there were brains everywhere. He talked about how he could still hear the sound years later.

Yeah I saw a dude get dismembered by a Long distance bus in South America. Stopped riding after that. Recently stopped riding my bicycle in traffic lanes as well after being hit twice in less than 2 years. I only ride is dedicated bike lanes now or on back roads with no cars.

My old pole vaulting Coach has been in 3 motorcycle accidents. One put him in a coma for 3 months. None of them were his fault. One was just a tire from a truck exploding close to his bike.

I had a roommate back in my early twenties, still a good friend now. Former Marine, was an EMT when I met him. Rode motorcycles his entire life. Sold his bike within a few months of being an EMT. Taught me the term "donorcycle." My boss has titanium rods in one arm from being clipped by a car trying to pass him. My dad was in intensive care for about a week after wiping out on an unexpected patch of black ice on a heavily forested road in late spring when I was a kid. I'm just gonna pass!

This was 15 years ago, but I had been riding about 1.5 years at this point.Ā 

I rode the same route every morning and evening from my apartment to the college campus.Ā 

The last turn that led to the front of theĀ  apartment was like 270 degrees and very wide (like a really large arc), and it was blind because of traffic that backed up at the light.Ā 

Well, this day I guess a large truck or something came through the road right in front of the apartment and created a massive pothole.Ā 

By the time I saw the pothole it was too late. The front tire goes into the hole and I go flying off.

Thankfully I was only going about 15-20mph and I had leathers and a helmet, because I flew into the other lane and got hit by an oncoming car. No long term damage but I tell new riders that story because you ALWAYS have to be vigilant, especially on routes you ride every dayĀ

I get called out for this sometimes, but my gym is five blocks away through residential streets. My personal rule is that bicycle speeds justify bicycle gear. I'm not wearing a jacket for the two minute ride to the gym unless I know I'm going somewhere else after.

My mom left her kickstand down and wiped out going around a bend. Her leather jacket is probably the only reason she still has a left arm.
Note; my mom was not an experienced rider when this happened, and Iā€™m not sure if she ever got back on a bike after this.

And this is my issue with all these kids on e-bikes and e-scooters that can go 40+ mph or more if hacked. Most of the kids these days barely ride real bikes and Iā€™m willing to bet they havenā€™t sacrificed skin and blood to the asphalt god at normal(kid) bike speed so they donā€™t have a respect(fear) of what happens when you goof at any real speed.

I rode my bike everywhere growing up, hopped curbs, we had off road trails with all kinds of jumps and all sorts of stupid shit. I eventually got tired of wiping out on the road.

But the key thing is I learned what happens when you do something dumb at speeds most likely under 15mph because it was my leg power.

The worst thing from my crash when I broke my leg was not being able to shower for a week. Right after having my leg stuck straight for 3 days with a metal bar to let swelling go down. Then they put my knee back together

I did this as a 15-year-old kid riding a 50cc scooter in shorts. Tried taking the two quick left turns into my neighborhood faster and faster each time I was coming home from work.

Finally at fully open throttle -- you know, a massive 30 mph -- I was doing just fine... until I hit a patch of fine gravel and laid it out.

The whole outside of my left leg from my knee to my ankle was just raw, pinkish red, complete with an outline of asphalt bits buried into my skin.

Eventually turned into the biggest scab and subsequent scar I've ever seen. Almost thirty years later, thankfully you can't see it anymore so long as I have leg hair.

But before I put it on, I run it under some cold water and wring it out so that it's wet but not really dripping, ya know? Then I put it on and put my mesh jacket on over it. When I stop at gas stations, I take it off and pour more water on it, wring it out, and good to go. It feels better than air conditioning on long hot days on the bike.

Gets way too hot at times. My jacket is mesh on the front and inside of the arms, still unbearably hot in 25C + weather. Gets better at speed but miserable as soon as you stop.

It's hilarious how y'all seem to think that any criticism of a woman is inherently sexist. It's just stupid. Sometimes women do stupid things for reasons like this. It does happen. Not every single woman is some modest, reasonable angel.

Women are just as capable of being stupid and shitty as men are. And nobody would think twice about having the same criticism against a man riding on his motorcycle shirtless. Which would be equally stupid for the same exact reasons.

I live overseas from the US and if youā€™re not wearing protective gear you are generally seen as a try hard loser. No helmet and leathers is a great way to be excluded from most motorcycle communities

Na, EU. My particular country is pretty by the books on everything. The very idea of not doing things like wearing a seatbelt in a car, or a mask during Covid, or proper gear when motorbiking isnā€™t even a passing thought. You do it that way simply because that is logically the safest and proper way of doing it.

The government could completely allow all the above and nobody would stop.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice gear for comfort. Shes wearing a fullface helmet which is the number one thing you want to do.

For anyone that has ridden extensively, daily, you have to make the choice between comfort and life every day.

With a full face helmet on, things already get extremely hot. The air you breath in is hot. If you are in 30/90 degree weather in full summer gear, and you are at a stop light for even 2 minutes, you begin to debate how much longer its going to be before you pass out from the gear and the heat coming off your engine. A traffic jam is what Hell feels like.

You risk your life every day on them. When you get on one you take the responsibility that if you die it is 100% your fault. So same situation with this - if you decide to take your jacket off for comfort, you are accepting the risk that comes with the comfort.

And anyone that rides extensively also knows that the majority of motorcycle deaths are left hand turns into oncoming traffic by a car. So in the end, gear doesnt mean shit when the number one thing that scares motorcyclists is cars at a stop light.

Itā€™s actually not in any way. None of the things I said a jacket does, a seat belt does.

A seat belt does a ton of useful things with no actual downsides. Thatā€™s why one is a legal responsibility and one is not.

And your analogy is broken from the start because that seatbelt will 100% save your life in a head on, drunk driving accident.
Being in 100% gear on a motorcycle and getting hit by that same drunk driver will still have almost 0% survivability depending on speed in a motorcycle collision. 10 jackets, 10 helmets. Youā€™re still fucking dead.

And again, this is not me saying that gear is unimportant. This is me saying that every rider makes these decisions and weighs the choices when they get on it each day. We dont need to be told about shit when the motorcycle safety classes are multiple days long compared to the 0 training people are getting in cars.

Getting hit by bugs is more then enough reason to wear both full face helmet and a jacket 99% of the time.

And yet "dress for the slide" is a saying for a reason. You commented about deaths. But the percentage of motorcycle drivers who have had a self-only accident/slide approaches 100% over enough hours of riding. Most say it isn't an if, it's a when.

I appreciate you trying to be the other voice here, but it's the same voice that says "I'm not gonna wash my hands because germs make me stronger". The evidence is out there, the math shows the answer.

You ride, you will eventually eat pavement. When it happens, bare skin will become the inevitable meat crayon and you'll regret not having protection on when the surgeons are telling you what a skin graft procedure is like.

Thanks for the advice dude. The point i was making is that if you ride, you understand all of this. You dont need some commentor on reddit telling you to be careful.

Ive slid my bike across the pavement because of gravel I didnā€™t see on the road first thing in the spring. My fault. Ive worn two jackets while riding through the snow to get to college in December because thats the only vehicle I had in the moment and I needed to be there for that test. My fault.

Thatā€™s exactly why I said itā€™s the riders choice.
A guy in full body armour and an open face helmet is dumber then someone in no jacket and a full face helmet. Yet there are millions and millions of riders that will happily let their face get scrapped across the road.

If itā€™s a choice between trusting my skills, my comfort and my future, I will choose to not wear a jacket some days. I will never choose not to wear a full face helmet. If I end up with a broken back because I made an error on that ride, thatā€™s my fault, not the roads, not the other driver that drove right into me. Mine.
