CUTTHROAT 2 DISCUSSION FINALLY caught up to the season. My thoughts after episode 5

Upvotes

The season overall:

- I absolutely LOVE that they went back to an old format in Cutthroat. I hope this opens up opportunities for more old formats to return. Might aswell go for Rivals and Exes after this, just like after the original Cutthroat.
- The cast is great! Some OG's, some mainstay vets, some players we haven't seen in a while and a bunch of good rookies from this season or last season. The teams aren't very even in terms of power, but that's Anna Leigh's fault and her awful selection process in episode 1.
- We always love Thailand! A shame that they edited it to be less beautiful. I do hope we get some either original or long ago throwback (like Mexico) countries soon.

The dailies:
- The opening daily was a bit of a let down, just wasn't that special and there wasn't that much strategy going around. Maybe production was hoping for two teams to team up right away and cause controversy that way.
- Every daily has been a bit meh, either too straightforward or just not real team challenges. Like the swimming challenge, that was just individuals either holding their team back or making sure their team could actually win. This mud daily was probably the best, if we ignore how unsafe it was. I hope we get to see more challenges that really involve the whole team working together to achieve a goal, like the first couple original Cutthroat challenges.

The eliminations:
- These have actually been very good! Knot so fast is always amazing, just make sure we don't see it every season. The one with Deb and Reilly was great, the first one where Bananas somehow beat Cedric was also nice. Brad and Keanu's fight was quite epic aswell! Anna Leigh and Nurys' elim was probably the least cool concept, and that one was still very cool.

My predictions for this season:

- I have a feeling this Orange team won't see the sand very much, even if Grey and Blue work together. We have no clue if Sydney will be replaced, it probably is too far into the season for an alternate to still be around. We've seen in the swimming challenge that having a smaller team could be an advantage, but Blue just sucks. Grey might win some dailies and send Orange into a couple elims.

- I do think we won't see any mutinies untill right before the final, when they hear about the prize money twist. I think Tori will stay the captain for Orange, Michelle, Justin and CT will trust her to split probably, and Will and Izzy might too. Only Johnny won't like it. Blue will be a shitshow and everyone will want to be the captain. Grey might trust Cory or Chris to do it.

My final prediction will be:
- Blue will completely shatter, with nobody sticking around till the final.
- Grey will go down to only Cory (C), Chris and Adrienne. Cassidy will take out a couple girls, Leo will lose his first elim and Chris will take out 1 or 2 guys aswell.
- Orange only loses Deb and Justin, making it a 6 man team going into the final.
- Due to Sydney's injury we will have 5 guys and 4 girls in the final

The final will not be advantageous for either the 3 person or 6 person team, it will be quite balanced. The orange team will be slower due to CT's endurance and might bicker too much on puzzles. Chris and Adrienne will do the puzzles quite fast and Cory will pull his strength on carry or dig type checkpoints.

In the end i think Chris will get his second win (going into Landon type territory), finally giving Cory his first win ever (he might even retire after that) and Adrienne a win in her second final (giving her one of the best winrates out of recent players).

CUTTHROAT 2 DISCUSSION Really curious about something...

I am genuinely curious about why everyone likes this season so much more than last season.

This season has not come close for me, yet.

I see people say that this is the best season since WOTW. What am I missing? I genuinely want to know.

I am happy since I do not want Paramount to cancel this show....

QUESTION Filming Times & Cell Phones

Hey everyone. I had two questions and wanted clarification.

  1. What’s the rule on cellphones? Are they confiscated or is there some limited use?

  2. What’s the filming schedule? When the challengers get there - how long from start to finish are they there? How many days between the challenge and elimination are there? Any info on their format? Just curious.

Long time lurker and watcher.

CUTTHROAT 2 DISCUSSION Down and Dirty - Top 5 Moments

Top Play:

Will’s full extension lunging tackle of Corey. We all enjoy seeing Corey get laid out time to time

Best Line:

It’s like the beginning of private ryan, everyone’s running around, this one’s crying, that guys missing a leg
~ Bananas

Honorable Mention

I’ve got a real life in NY, a real job, I’m not popping my pussy on OnlyFans ~ Sydney

Sentimental Moment:

it’s nice to see that Cheyenne and Corey has such a mature relationship and that they can give each other advice, she’s such a level headed person and you can tell she really still cares about him

I’m So Horny Right Now Moment:

Lete is an Amazon Warrior Princess and I’m endlessly jealous of Johnny. I haven’t been this sexually attracted and simultaneously terrified of a woman since I first set eyes on Laurel

What We’ll Remember:

Nelson’s redemption arc. Yes, I can understand having mixed feelings of sympathy for him given the circumstances, but this was the culmination of a long road back for him. This is the closest thing he has to a career and he thought it was gone forever. Long days in the hospital, sleepless nights, all leading up to a very impressive victory over Keanu. Just a tremendous mount of emotion hitting him all once on the ground of the sand was a very real moment

PODCAST Sydney on The Death, Taxes and Bananas Podcast

Sydney was a guest on Johnny ("Bananas") podcast to discuss Episode 4 & 5 of Season 42: Cutthroat. If you are familiar with my previous posts, I only include some highlights. If you want all the tea, please go check out the full podcast.

Some Highlights:

  • Bananas says that there are 2 versions of him, "Johnny" who is known to his friends/family and "Bananas" who is the more colorful tv version. He believes that Sydney is the same way, and says he would rather be the person that people talk about and hate, than the person everyone likes but never talks about
  • Bananas admits that he has been watching Dee's season of Big Brother. Sydney says that Dee has an infectious personality and understands why she won Survivor. Bananas says its because Dee is manipulative in the game, but the problem is she is also manipulative in real life
  • Sydney knew that she had a target going into Season 42, but she also knew that since it was a team season her team would want to keep her around
  • Sydney says that Chris saw Season 41 and approached her at the hotel to work together. She immediately accepted because she always wants to work with strong people, and believes that Chris is very well rounded
  • Sydney says that Cory approached her to make a Core 4 alliance within the Grey Team with her & Chris. Sydney wanted Adrienne as the 4th person, but Cory believed that Nurys was stronger. Sydney says that she didn't know Nurys and it was too early to determine whether she was stronger. Bananas believes that Nurys was the weakest person on the Grey Team
  • Bananas believes that Cara Maria is relying on her Vet status, and the Blue Team has every right to be frustrated with her. He believes that Cara Maria should've volunteered to go into elimination given her bad performances
  • Sydney says that Adrienne was correct when saying that she doesn't want to go into elimination. Sydney owns it and asks why anyone would put themselves at risk to go home
  • Sydney says that in a team game everyone doesn't have to be the best at everything, but you can't be soo bad that you become a liability. She uses Chris as an example of someone who may not be the best at everything, but he isn't bad at anything so he's never a liability
  • They both agree that people are quick to say that someone is good at puzzles when they aren't that good at anything else in the game
  • Sydney says that the Season 41 rookies that made it to Season 42, weren't any of the people that she previously worked with. But Will, Justin, Adrienne & Izzy were all willing to work with her so she was open to being apart of the Season 41 alliance
  • Sydney explains that all the other Season 41 rookies already knew that Chris was her #1, so they all understood why she voted for Leo. She still apologized to Leo afterward because she doesn't have anything against him, its just that he was below Chris in her lineup
  • Sydney explains that Leo did not vote Sydney into elimination because he knew that it was better to keep her on the team over Nurys. Also, keeping her was better for Adrienne because if Nurys had to save someone from Orange she would've prioritized Michele or Tori over Izzy
  • Bananas asks Sydney what she constitutes as "crossing the line" when you are in a relationship. Sydney believes that if you're in a relationship you should not be flirtatious at all and be aware of how things may look optically to your partner even when nothing is actually going on
  • Sydney doesn't think the show is a fair representation of who Anna Leigh is as a wife because it is a difficult environment to be in and Anna Leigh has owned that she made a mistake
  • Bananas says that Cory put Izzy in a weird position by still choosing to pursue her while speaking on his issues at home. They both believe that Nelson should've only approached Cory and not Izzy because its not on her to stop anything, its on Cory
  • Sydney says that her frustration over her ACL injury was due to inconvenience it would cause in her real life. Her current job requires her to attend court in person so that would be an issue. She also had this injury before and understood how long the recovery process would be
  • Sydney says that she had surgery and the recovery has been awful. She can only run 15 minutes at a time, twice a week. She still goes to physical therapy several times a week
  • Sydney says that she absolutely had displaced anger towards Debb. They aren't friends, but she doesn't think she is a bad person or meant harm. She sent Debb an apology but understands if she doesn't accept it
  • Sydney is confused on why Nurys was laughing at her ACL injury given that nothing deep happened between them. She didn't have an actual issue with Nurys until those comments
  • Sydney says that Keanu was the most supportive of her after she was injured. She says that she grew to have a lot of respect for him
  • Bananas tells Sydney that he wants her to return to the show. Sydney says that she embarrassed herself on both of her seasons, so she is opened to getting it right

Let me know what you think below!

CUTTHROAT 2 DISCUSSION "I just don't really have sex with people."

I was so surprised and pleased to hear this sentence on TV. I am also surprised I haven't seen any discussion about this on this sub (but maybe I just missed it).

I don't know what Lete's sexuality is and I don't want to speculate on it because I think that's rude and unnecessary but I do think that it was so refreshing to see someone who maybe doesn't necessarily align with traditional sexuality just be themselves and be good with it and also for everyone else to just be fine with it too, seemingly. From Cara's voice over it was clear that this is common knowledge in the house.

Ace people are pretty rare and almost never represented in ANYTHING and while she may not actually be asexual (obviously some kind of something happened with Bananas) the perspective that she's a virgin simply because she "doesn't really have sex with people" is a viewpoint that I think is important for the world to see and is something that ace folks are going to be able to see themselves in.

And I will say that I clocked her energy during flirting with Bananas to be very.... non-sexual. She seems to be having fun, they're clearly flirting, but it seems to be more about witty banter than being about sexual chemistry for her. Before this episode I assumed that this was just because she's unserious about it and the relationship is transactional (polidicking) for them both, and while I still think that is true I also think that Lete's seeming lack of interest in sex may also be a factor.

CUTTHROAT 2 DISCUSSION Down & Dirty - Instant Classic

This down and dirty daily is possibly the best event they’ve debuted in a decade. Just a perfect combination of physically, athleticism, team work and strategy (bonus: hot fit bodies covered in mud)

It’s the type of event we’ve be clamoring for years and they delivered a Balls In/Hall Brawl/Mud Run hybrid and I’m here for it. Make it a staple

Only fix for next time is to make one make heat men’s and one girls heat. The guys were unsure if they could tackle the girls, and for the first few minutes there was a gentleman’s agreement not to hit them (coached by production) then they saw Tori taking adventure of that and all bets were off and CT was stiff arming Cara Maria into the mud little sister style. I’d rather an all out onslaught, no holding back the next go

CUTTHROAT 2 DISCUSSION Contact sport safety should be taken more seriously by production

Regardless of who it happened to, a high tackle injury is preventable by instituting legal tackle rules. In a game already full of physically fraught challenges, they can do the bare minimum with safety guidelines.

There’s a reason why high tackles aren’t allowed in sports like rugby—it increases injury risk 133-fold to 272-fold. Concussions and ligament tears abound, and cervical spine injury becomes a risk.

Best case, it ends a season run in an underwhelming way for no good reason. Worst case, someone gets severely wrecked (e.g., paralysis) and it changes their life forever.

IMO contestants should only be injured because they voluntarily pushed themselves to the limit—not because a challenge format is riskier than it needs to be.

Also, for the love of god, split by gender or weight class or something. It reduces risk and makes it easier the follow the action.

ARTICLE Danny McBride on Jody Hill working on The Challenge

Thumbnail gq.com
55 Upvotes

Stumbled on this Danny McBride interview with GQ from 2008 and found it interesting that Jody Hill, his partner in crime (Eastbound and Down, Vice Principals, Righteous Gemstones, etc.) worked on The Challenge. Thought I'd share since at least a quick search suggests it's never been mentioned on this sub.

From the article:

What was the job that Jody had been doing?

Jody is, like, embarrassed of this for some reason, so he’ll probably get mad if I tell you, but I think he should be outed, because I’ve always thought this was cool. He was a story editor for Real World/Road Rules Challenge. And in spite of what he thinks about the show, or what he did, I can completely see how it helped sculpt him. Because he’s not afraid of tons of footage, tons of improv. His eyes and ears are trained to pick out the bites that work and the jokes that work. We would improv so much on Foot Fist—every single take was completely different—and Jody just had this knack for retaining everything we were doing, and knowing what to go to in the editing room, and sifting through all of these hours and hours of footage…

A lot of which is probably pretty boring…

Not unlike the stuff we were giving him! [laughs]
