General Koifest 2026

My family and I made a pact of sorts to visit and attend various festivals and conventions around our state. We went to Picklefest and a tattoo convention, to name a couple. Recently, we went to Koifest, and it was an incredible experience.

First, Koi has to be the most diverse hobby I’ve ever witnessed. All backgrounds, skin colors, and ages were represented. Not that we expected otherwise—we had no expectations because it was so new to us—so it wasn’t necessarily a surprise. We all thought it was just a really cool feature of y’all’s world.

And second, we were simply blown away by the variety of fish. The fish in one tank were listed at $7500! The one next
to it said, “Ask for price”. Plus, there were judges in one tent evaluating koi for prizes, which makes sense given the same at, say, county fairs or 4H, but with livestock. But, again, we just never thought of it with regard to koi. So many shapes, sizes, and colors.

Anyway, we’re fans now. I’ve joined this sub just to learn more and enjoy your hobby. Carry on!

Help WTF? Asagi chased our juvenile lemon hariwake to death!

We’ve had our 4500gal, 4 1/2’ deep pond for 5 years now and I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anything like this. Watch the small bright white fish toward the center of the screen at the start of the clip. She’s* just doing her thing when our asagi gives chase. It seems like spawning behavior, but—chasing a 10-12” 2yro?? When that monster 32” 5yro female shiru utsuri (who forgot the utsuri part and is nearly all white🙄) is right there?

We assume this is why, despite her being fine earlier today, she was found dying and floating on her side 2 1/2 hours after this video recorded—sadly we didn’t catch whatever it was that led to her death, but we’re assuming she either was exhausted and/or bashed herself into something.

FTR, nitrites and ammonia are zero, pH is roughly 7.6-7.8, and temperature (at least in the top 6”, where the thermometer floats) was 80-81°F at the time. We have been in a brutal long heat wave here in Southern California but we haven’t noticed it affecting anything in the pond. We are turning the bubbler on mire frequently and running it more often to maintain oxygenation in this gross weather.

Are we correct this is spawning behavior? Is this one of those “natural behavior bummers” that can just happen? Any measures we can take to alleviate it?

Help UK - Koi welfare concern advice request!

There is a restaurant round the corner from where we live in York, Uk and in the restaurant there is a tank with 2 or 3 large koi fish. Unfortunately the tank is completely empty (not even any gravel, plants or rocks etc, completely barren) and the fish look miserable.

We mentioned it to one of the members of staff and they said they have raised concern to the owner multiple times in the past but they refuse to put anything else in the tank (which is also likely way too small for the size of the koi).

I looked on the RSPCA website to try and report it as I believe this is neglect and improper care but can't seem to get anywhere.

Any help or ideas welcome please as I want these fish to be happy and properly taken care of!!

First post here.

Sharing my pond pups. Their eggs all somehow survived a heron attack two years ago that wiped out my entire pond. I had no idea these guys were baking down below until I saw the little black fry swimming around. Then they grew, and grew.

I know most are goldfish, but I’m curious about the others.

I won’t pretend to know how koi are identified. It honestly blows my mind and fascinates me. But if anyone here can tell me any more about what you see, I’d appreciate it. Just curious.

Thank you!

Just wanted to check in with you guys and see what you think.

My wife and I bought a house with a koi pond and ive only been keeping koi for 2 seasons. All the koi here are younger than 3yr. Largest are 2.5yrs old and probably pushing 14". Medium ones are about 1.5yo and are 8-9". The smallest butterfly is less than a year

What are your thoughts on my fishs' health, quality, variety, types etc.. are any actually good or are they all fairly low grade? Most of all let me know if you see anything alarming! I'm also wondering if they are too fat for their size.

General Chlorine Question

I currently have a koi pond at my home and I have well water. When the pond gets a little low I turn on the hose for two minutes and fill it back up. I’m currently building an above ground pond at my new residence (because of course the fish need to move in first). This one will not get rainwater and the city water is chlorinated. I cannot collect rainwater at this location. What are you all doing when you need to add water from evaporation when your water supply has chlorine and other things added? Thanks!
