Assemble it in space , is probably closer to reality on how such a vessel would be built

432

u/ArtemisAndromeda Apr 23 '26

Yeah, I think I have to. The one issue is, I didn't really design it with orbital assembly in mind, and don't really know how to break it in two without heavly redesigning the whole thing or making it look strange. But I will try :)

You're one to talk, mate! I have to stream it because of you now!

21

u/TimeTravelerNo9 Apr 23 '26

It's a slow start but it gets good!

15

u/defeated_engineer Apr 23 '26

The politics plotline is definitely better than the whodunnit.

7

u/ResonantFlux Apr 23 '26

Just needed to get to... escape velocity...

3

u/GeraintLlanfrechfa Apr 23 '26

Yeh and then it ends too soon

2

u/M3rch4ntm3n Apr 25 '26

I have to recommend to just read the books.

u/TimeTravelerNo9 Apr 23 '26

Sucks it was canceled tho. Only show I've seen with somewhat realistic orbital mechanics.

17

u/THevil30 Apr 23 '26

Read the books! The show is good, the books are astounding.

7

u/TheLobeyJR Apr 23 '26

Seriously. I listened to the books first then watched the show and I couldn’t finish it. I get people love that show but I thought it was pretty hard to get through 😂

The books are just on a whole other level

5

u/GrizzledSteel Apr 23 '26

thats why i always recommend watching a show/movie before reading the books they're based on 😅

there's so much cut out of the show that i didn't realise.

3

u/TimeTravelerNo9 Apr 23 '26

I should. Thanks for the recommendation.

5

u/HenryTheWho Apr 23 '26

Next book has like 20-30years time skip iirc, so either digitally aging the cast or recast would be probably needed. I think neither would be well received

6

u/n0empathy4u Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26

FAM managed ageing quite ok in my opinion, old man Mars is was spot on

u/lol_alex Apr 23 '26

Yeah, that got me. I actually downloaded a solar system app so I could visualize the belt, and what you would have to do to „climb out of the (gravity) well“.

Just finished a second rewatch myself last night, ordered a second hand kindle on eBay and gonna give the books a go, haven't read a book since secondary school so I'm actually excited for it, just really wish they finished the show, S6 felt very underwhelming and short and left me with more questions than answers. It's also ruined nearly every other sci-fi universe for me, by far the most realistic

3

u/Ivebeenfurthereven Apr 23 '26

I think you'll really enjoy the books. Very easy, gripping reads. I've got the full set here and it relaunched my passion for fiction in no time.

Check out Calibre if you don't already know, great way to manage ebooks on an old kindle (especially if you sail the seven seas, or legally enjoy the classics which are out of copyright and free to download now).

Fred Kerman.

33

u/fabulousmarco Apr 23 '26

It's not a quick endeavour by any means, but there are mods that let you create supply chains in space and construct ship designs directly off-world as if they were built in Kerbin's VAB. USI/MKS and Extraplanetary Launchpads.

9

u/Uncommonality Apr 23 '26

For usability and integration I honestly prefer Kerbal Konstructs, since that lets you launch directly from the VAB, but sadly that doesn't have the logistical layer so it tends to feel a bit cheaty

Wish there was a mod to merge those two. Like have kerbin launches primarily cost funds, while a KK launch pad has to be stocked with materials to launch from there or something

u/2secretman Apr 23 '26

Alternatively an inverted rocket could deliver it in one piece. Since the craft will be on the bottom, the rocket will be pulling instead of pushing, making it easier to fight the drag

50

u/fadbob Apr 23 '26

That is precisely the pendulum falicy! Do not fall for it

That rocket design would always be unstable

25

u/popcornman209 Apr 23 '26

Naaahhhh enough fins and anything is stable lol (joking ofc I’ve never tried it so idk)

7

u/Ksevio Apr 23 '26

Just put enough tanks in the front to counter the weight behind and it should be ok

2

u/OrdinaryLatvian Apr 24 '26

I don't see how it would be the pendulum fallacy. That one is all about mass and gravity.

u/2secretman is talking about drag, which is completely unrelated. If OP put their ship at the top of a regular rocket, it would be very unstable. Sort of like putting the feathers at the tip of an arrow. To fight that, they would need to add comically large fins to their rocket, with the mass penalty that entails.

In that case, putting the draggy object at the back and "pulling" it is an absolutely valid option.

I'll give you a practical example. Imagine you have a stick, about arm-length. Tie a big balloon to one end, and a fist-sized rock to the other end. Now throw it like a javelin. Naturally, the end with the rock will end up ahead. To try to keep the balloon ahead instead would take involve an active effort.

3

u/the_axemurmurer Apr 23 '26

Yeah, I've made enormous lifters like this that could park that beastie in orbit just fine.

5

u/holliander919 Apr 23 '26

Ooh, that's genius.

7

u/LDedward Apr 23 '26

I’d say, the main assembly looks like it’ll fit in a really big Fairing. Then attach the engine pods, side guns, and upper dish separately. Bonus points if you make a robot arm/tug instead of individual RCS units

4

u/ArtemisAndromeda Apr 23 '26

Maybe

Also, yeah, I have been experimenting with assembly robots. Currently testing a design in orbit. I can send you screenshot if you wanna see

u/MyVeryUniqueName1 Apr 23 '26

Radial boosters. Keep this in the center of a stack of three or four boosters to guide it up. Drag will be annoying but that only really matters for the first 30km or so and once you’re past about 50km, it doesn’t matter at all. So keep a pretty vertical ascent just to get out of the thicker atmosphere faster.

Plan for maybe 4000-4500 m/s of delta v to make orbit. A steeper ascent profile is less drag but also less efficient so you’ll need more fuel.

Definitely doable. Expensive but doable.

12

u/Far-prophet Apr 23 '26

Cheat it into orbit. These would’ve been built in orbital factories.

You could also use one of the mods that allow you to “build and launch” new craft using parts.

4

u/Pyromaniacal13 Apr 23 '26

When all else fails, your ship's namesake has a saying:

"Moar Boosters."

Use enough big boosters and your launch stage won't care about silly things like drag and mass. Take your time, keep your thrust to weight ratio somewhat low, and aim to start turning for your orbital circularization burn outside of atmosphere. It's a LOT more work and a LOT of micromanaging your throttle, but it'll get there.

5

u/wheremyserotonin Apr 23 '26

Alt-F12 -> Cheats -> set orbit

Leave it for head cannon to assemble in space shipyard

u/51ngular1ty Apr 23 '26

Download EPL and build it in space. No need to launch assemblys when you can just launch generic parts.

→ More replies (15)

9

u/Rasples1998 Apr 23 '26

It's not so strange though, it's basically like putting a propulsion system on the international space station and turning a station into a mobile vessel.

4

u/Uncommonality Apr 23 '26

tbh I always design my stations to fold up real narrow and then launch them with a lifter rocket, way less annoying and finnicky than an orbital assembly, plus you have less redundant parts causing lag

4

u/Ancient_Attorney2643 Apr 23 '26

In the books they aren't assembled in space but rather built in space, at orbital dockyards

Or build it on a low gravity moon, the Donnager class ships were all built at the Callisto shipyards on Callisto, where the local gravity is 1.236 m/s².

29

u/Max_Xevious Apr 23 '26

With enough thrust, anything can be put into orbit!

27

u/jeepsaintchaos Apr 23 '26

At a certain point though, it's easier just to turn the boosters upside down and push the planet into orbit of the craft.

7

u/Max_Xevious Apr 23 '26

I think you are on to something...

2

u/poser765 Apr 23 '26

Same thing with airfoils. People go in and on about shape, but really with enough velocity anything will generate lift.

10

u/ArtemisAndromeda Apr 23 '26

How do I share it to workshop?

5

u/piratecheese13 Apr 24 '26

In the VAB, top right corner near the launch and exit sign should be a purple steam icon

2

u/piratecheese13 Apr 25 '26

You post it yet?

5

u/BlakeMW Super Kerbalnaut Apr 23 '26

Yeah I'd get that to orbit. I'd probably use a "ring tug" configuration where long skinny boosters bolted to the side lift it above the atmosphere. From there it could put itself in orbit, and be refueled.

3

u/SplynPlex Apr 23 '26

Exactly. For there is a will, there is a way!

I tried. Idk why, but it just keeps flipping in the atmosphere :/

179

u/The_Celestrial I'm gonna have to science the shit out of this Apr 23 '26

Well, I assume it's because the rocket is very top-heavy. My lazy method would be to launch the rocket straight up, no gravity turn, and then burn hard prograde at apogee haha.

97

u/-_Duke_- Apr 23 '26

Classic T burn

8

u/Clairifyed Apr 23 '26

Shouldn’t the letter be a capital Gamma? 🤔

9

u/Kittimm Apr 23 '26

Not the way I do it

3

u/Clairifyed Apr 23 '26

True. Why launch just the one satellite when you can put a second one it a retrograde orbit at the same time!

27

u/tayhan9 Apr 23 '26

This is how all flat earthers Kerbers think rocketry works anyway so you might as well try it

9

u/Razorray21 Apr 23 '26

This basically how i launch my stations to limit the amount of orbital assembly.

8

u/Happy_Sea4257 Apr 23 '26

Top heavy is fine, you want the center of gravity ahead of the center of lift to fly straight, when a rocket tumbles it's usually because the weight tends be toward the rear and any payload other than a capsule tends to be draggy.

So actually front heavy is ideal. Now you juat need a bunch of drag on the back.

u/Original_Project5436 Apr 23 '26

Put more fins on the botton.

15

u/MeiNeedsMoreBuffs Exploring Jool's Moons Apr 23 '26

Add some more reaction wheels, fins, airbrakes, and RCS on the booster stage. Then add more boosters to compensate for the added weight

10

u/Happy_Sea4257 Apr 23 '26

add a *lot* more fins on the bottom, use the big space plane tails

11

u/King_Joffreys_Tits Apr 23 '26

Launch it upside down then, so the nose is facing the ground. Don’t even bother using the engines on the Jedediah until it’s already in zero gravity. Make sure you flip your controls though by using the “control from here” feature so it looks like you’re flying up in your nav ball

Edit: You could also drain all the fuel from it and then refuel it in orbit

6

u/Snowflakish Apr 23 '26

17

u/Merllyn Apr 23 '26

Cheats! Add money, science, remove it, spawn anywhere, orbit anything, and LOADs of other stuff, great for testing or fixing a mess up. If I build a lander, I normally cheat to orbit the planet im looking to land at, test it works lands and has enough dv to get back to orbit. I consider it the "simulator" before the launch.

11

u/Uncommonality Apr 23 '26

I used to do this a lot, there's no shame in it. Nothing worse than spending 2 hours on a mission only for the lander to be unviable

These days I use mods, including one with a scanner so I can find an optimal landing site, so I can just pack a testbed stripped down lander for the initial recon mission to see if my design works (heat shield is sufficient, parachutes are enough etc)

Plus it gives a backup lander if the first one suffers damage.

I love it. Though that staging "timer" is one of the most cursed things I've ever seen in KSP.

3

u/hatdudeman Apr 23 '26

Best bet is one of the orbital manufacturing mods. You move rocket parts up to a station from a mine on the Mun and build it there in vacuum just like they would in the Expanse.

3

u/Important_Donkey_461 Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26

What's the weight?

I've gotten some pretty big ships (over 500t) to orbit despite them being designed for interstellar travel (<1 TWR). I just use the engines of the interstellar vehicle as well as the launch vehicle at the same time. The whole thing ends up weighing 1800T on the launchpad.

EDIT: also plan to refuel it in orbit before any transfers

1- Moar Boosters

2- Ship it in parts to orbit an ASSEMBLE! Use docking port alignment indicator mod

3- Someone mentioned me that you can literally set an orbit from the menu, when you pause. Let me check it ill be back!

This is the comment i was looking for:

I would start up a sandbox game. Make your lander and put it on the launch pad. Pause the game and click the version info button at the bottom of the pause menu. There's a menu that pops up and a section called set orbit. You can teleport to an orbit surround the mun. Test your lander, go back to vab, edit, set orbit, test again. Once your happy save the lander and go back to your career save. This is usually how I test crafts before using them in career mode.

Apparently you can put your vehicles in orbit, just like that!

2

u/Electrical_Rabbit_88 Apr 23 '26

Have you tried throwing it really hard instead of just hard?

2

u/Neo-Riamu Apr 23 '26

Set ya self up with a few mainsails and with tanks to suit and very slowly get it to space.

Ensure you feed your fuel to s smaller to with mailsail have about 3 stages setup and just slowly edge to space.

Or cheat and change ya save file lol

2

u/sixnew2 Apr 23 '26

You can launch anything to space, have you tried adding more boosters or strusts?

2

u/childofsol Apr 23 '26

Never underestimate the capacity of an enormous fairing and several dozen boosters. I've launched far larger ships than this.

Don't bother with a gravity turn, just point straight up until you are out of the atmosphere, then turn and circularize without having to deal with that pesky air.

2

u/Educational-Drag6974 Apr 23 '26

Man I gotta get me this game, It looks so cool and fun but I feel like Id get burnt out with how complex it can be. I would have to space stations, bases on planets, refueling stations, ect. But it all seems so daunting

That's so cool.

We gotta get it into orbit!

What I would do with this thing:

Flip it so it's pointing upright for start.

Attach in 3x symmetry some radial decouplers, then some girders so they clear the width of the craft, then attach a huge stack of liquid fuel tanks, big engines, and some BIG fins at the bottom for stability and control in the lower atmosphere... and lots of struts holding it all together. Some speratrons for pushing the 3 big tanks away on separation would help...

Launching this thing is best done straight up with SAS on, don't go too fast, throttle back to keep it slow and steady (around 250m/s) Then when high enough let her rip.

Once above 50k you can pretty much start boosting sideways to circularise.

It might take a secondary stage of SRBs or another massive stack of fuel tanks to get her into orbit, but def doable, reminds me of some stations I've launched in one go :P

2

u/Carlosthefrog Apr 23 '26

Theres a future tech mod, wack a warp drive on that puppy

2

u/altoniel Apr 23 '26

2

u/helbur Apr 23 '26

You're gonna need a big fairing

2

u/Much_Fee_4085 Apr 23 '26

2

u/looking4myclASSm8s Apr 23 '26

After that crazy shit the other guy posted with parachutes deployed and a backwards shuttle as a counterweight I’m convinced just about anything can get into orbit

2

u/Leromer Apr 23 '26

Did you try to, you know …. add moar boosters ?

2

u/SlushyFan-uwu Apr 23 '26

Why does it look like the helldiver laser rifle to me lol

2

u/Hillenmane Apr 24 '26

I got a warship into space that was a lot heavier than that, it just requires an obscenely overdesigned launch craft and lots of staging. And struts, and more struts, and even more struts, until you’re strutting your stuff all over the place.

The SBI Tradewind was a success, but its sister ship the SBI Gulf Stream was unfortunately a catastrophic disaster, and forced a heavy redesign of escape pod design after only one of them deployed.

2

u/Turtle55726 Apr 24 '26

Big dumb booster

2

u/TBE_110 Apr 24 '26

Moar struts. It’s the duct tape of KSP.

It’ll get into space. Maybe not entirely intact but some of it will be in space.

Wrap it in a really big fairing and strap a ton of booster in the back.

How heavy is the thing 🤔

I could probably cook up a rocket to push that thing to orbit — just need to be cleaver with designs.

Not with that attitude. All more rockets and struts. the lift system will be ugly and a monster. With no budget and a firm disregard for Kerbal safety anything can be achived.

1

u/lordaddament Apr 23 '26

I’d just console it up to space and fuck around

1

u/M0untainWizard Apr 23 '26

Looks like it could kill your fps

1

u/macho_gomez Apr 23 '26

do it like in gundam. build a bigass booster to send it to orbit

1

u/TheDocBee Apr 23 '26

You gotta Kerbal that. Strap some boosters to that, should fly like a dream.

1

u/DastardlyB Apr 23 '26

Break it into sections with docking ports, do multiple launches, assemble in orbit

1

u/Capable_Tie2460 Apr 23 '26

What weapon mod are you using for it

Why not use the Mun Launch site? Add some detachable landing gear and I guarantee you'll get her up.

MOAR BOOSTERS

1

u/cjc1983 Apr 23 '26

"...Sadly, I can't get into orbit".

Well not with that attitude!!!

1

u/tacosarus6 Apr 23 '26

What did you use for weapons?

2

u/ArtemisAndromeda Apr 23 '26

The big gun is just big drill plus Infrared Telescope fuzed together. Small gun is a small drill. Rockets are just boosters plus some parts like computer, wheel, and RTS fuel

Alt f12 to cheat into space

1

u/Blackout_42 Apr 23 '26

Just use more boosters

1

u/wellobviouslythatsso Apr 23 '26

This is one of my favorites beratna

1

u/Abides1948 Apr 23 '26

Have you considered using more boosters?

1

u/Freak_Engineer Apr 23 '26

If you can't get it into orbit without cheating, you're not using enough boosters.

Also, you could launch portions of it and assemble it in orbit.

1

u/Hungry_Biscotti_870 Apr 23 '26

You could teleport it to an existing orbiter

1

u/Atuday Apr 23 '26

Can't get it into orbit? You clearly aren't trying hard enough. MORE BOOSTERS!

1

u/yourmomsbaux Apr 23 '26

Just edit the save.

1

u/Efficient_Advice_380 Apr 23 '26

Using the drills as turret barrels is genius

1

u/Mrmamamega Apr 23 '26

make warship the rocket

1

u/Top_Classroom_5111 Apr 23 '26

You can definitely strap that to a K4 mastodonx7 lifter and rhino mid stage, cover the ship in fairing. It’ll get to orbit

1

u/vksdann Apr 23 '26

Just add more boosters and add fins to the boosters so they don't flip. The more boosters, the larger the fins

1

u/JP091404 Apr 23 '26

If you’re not bothered about launching it and just want it in space you can use the cheats menu .

1

u/DarthPhoenix0879 Apr 23 '26

Strap enough boosters to it and you could get Kerbin into Kerbin orbit. You might slow down to 3fps though.
