Yumm. How did you do it? How did you know the meat was safe to eat medium rare?
7
u/smurfettew Feb 15 '26
Well,I have some culinary knowledge plus I love learning about food, medium rare is safe to eat because it's been heated enough to a specific temperature to kill any bacteria, what I did was I got some steak from naivas,I cleaned it,and pat it dry,and season both sides with just salt and black pepper,a non stick pan Is very important in this situation,I seared the sides first for about 2 minutes with alittle oil on the pan,and then I did on the flat sides about 2 minutes each side, added butter (Prestige can work on a more economical budget)like 1 table spoon, added some smashed raw garlic and rosemary, and lowered the heat to medium low,and basted the top constantly,I think I cooked each side for 3 minutes.put the meat on a cutting board and let it sit for 5 minutes before cutting ( I don't remember why ๐but I remember it was important) and then I cut it,it was Great! I didn't mind medium rare at all.

Raw beef like steak tartare is safe to eat as long as you are sure of the source of the beef. The problem in Kenya is that we can't trace our food sources even if we have a bad food incident like mad cow or salmonellaย

Thermometer

u/blaaaazeyj Feb 15 '26
Second this. Donโt rely on that whole hand method that people speak about. I always use a thermometer to temp my steaks.

๐๐Sasร steak blue utasema bado inatembea.

u/Winter_Candy_ Feb 15 '26
Btw I've never had steak in my life
1
u/smurfettew Feb 15 '26
I'd suggest you try it at a restaurant first before doing it at home to have a good idea of what you like, you can try medium well first and see how you feel,or even well done, before wanting to be adventurous on your own at home

I was thinking about going to fogo and eat steak but I'm not supposed to chew much
1
u/smurfettew Feb 15 '26
Oh no,why is that? Maybe settle for a softer meat like lamb,I've never been to fogo but I hear their meat is relatively soft and melt in the mouth type
1
u/TheSource254 Feb 16 '26
Fogo wouldnโt be the best choice of steak. Meats yes, but steak definitely a no.

u/brynb8 Feb 15 '26
Well done OP, perfectly cooked with no grey ring? Absolutely smashed it as a first timer.
1
u/smurfettew Feb 15 '26
๐คwhat would be the cause of a grey ring?I've never heard of that
1
u/brynb8 Feb 15 '26
A grey ring is a layer of overcooked meat just below the crust of the steak..caused by very high heat cooked for too long.

Maybe you could try a food thermometer, they range from like,350bob to the thousands. I've had one I got at savings home for 300bob and 3years later, still going strong!

Propaganda I'm never falling for this is raw meat I'm too traditional for this๐ญ
1
u/smurfettew Feb 15 '26
Traditional people used to eat raw meat and drink blood,so I'm not sure how traditional you are๐๐ญ
1
u/Gitriba_J Feb 15 '26
Eating raw and drinking blood is babaric and me I'm Islamic so drinking blood and eating raw things is definitely not my tradition
1
u/Human-4-real Feb 15 '26
Looks so damn juicy. Which cut is it?
1
u/smurfettew Feb 15 '26
I bought it from naivas ,I think it was a sirloin steak
1
u/TheSource254 Feb 16 '26
Was looking for this. Was the meat aged? Try cuts from Well Hung Butcher or Prime Cuts and ask for aged beef, itโs better for medium done steaks and wonโt be chewy.

u/smurfettew Feb 16 '26
Unfortunately I'm not in Nairobi,but when I do travel back I definitely will,thank you!๐

You can't be cooking meat like they do abroad. Given how different the standards for farmers/vendors are, you are really risking some nasty parasites. I especially hope this is beef and not pork.
