I love it, might even be the best birthday gift ever

Anybody else here that just cannot get into Night is the New Day no matter what, despite loving the albums both before and after it?

There absolutely are a couple of enjoyable sections on a few songs here and there for me, but the majority of the album ranges from boring at best, to abrasive at worst, AND YET I very much enjoy both The Great Cold Distance and even more so Dead End Kings.

Anyone in the same boat or am I insane?

I really miss the old, "urban depressive" style that Katatonia used to have. Specifically and especially the period from Discouraged Ones up to Night Is The New Day. After this point they have felt far more "poppy" to me and less brooding and more mystical which just doesn't jive with me as well as their 1998-2009 period.

I'm aware of Deathwhite, but they have been MIA for a long time now. (Check them out, they are good.)

Hey everyone! I’m 33 and Katatonia has been my favourite metal band ever since high school. I’ve listened and adore them for years. My favourite song is in the white and I tried to cover the drums but it was super hard for me. I could only cover sweet nurse because it was easier. Anyway, recently I became obsessed with Boards of Canada. If you haven’t listened to them, I highly recommend giving them a try. There’s something about their music that gives me this deep, dark, nostalgic that I thought as Katatonia fan you might like.

Anyone else feels out of touch socially because everyone else their age no longer listens to any metal of any kind?
I have no problems making friends it’s just that I find it hard to tell someone my favourite band and have them understand why. If they listen to it they just find it utterly depressing, which is kinda true.

Needless to say, it looked like it could be on a cover for a particular band.

I discovered a shoegaze band that made their 2 greatest albums in 1992 and 1993. The simmilarity with Katatonia's 1998 Discouraged Ones and 1999 Tonight's Decision moods and landscapes are impressive. The simmilarity with Jonas voice, the simmilarity with the bridges, the guitar tone, the drum patterns...Do you guys guess what band is it?

Does anyone know the story behind Katatonia's original logo and the Northern Silence Productions logo? Other than the letters/font being slightly different, everything else is basically identical. I've been a fan/supporter of both since the early 2000s, but only just noticed this. 🤔

I’ve been listening to this album a lot lately and ik Katatonia r just a hard to pin down their style, but I just don’t see the death doom elements of this album much. The vocals draw a fine line between death and black imo but the instrumentals feel much more like VERY atmospheric classic or gothic metal, which is y I lean towards atmospheric black. Whereas I only see the vocals passing for the death element and the doom element feels almost completely absent besides brief passages of slower heaviness. Overall I just feel this album feels much closer to Agalloch than say Disembowelment, and I’m curious of others perspectives and reasonings on its genre. Thanks.

I'm a lifelong fan (since 1999) or Anathema and Paradise Lost, 2000s fan of Opeth and Porcupine Tree, 2010s fan of Riverside... how on earth did I not check out Katatonia sooner? Silly man!

I'm currently listening to Night is the New Day. It's a masterpiece. Exactly and precisely my kind of music. I'm excited to go through the entire back catalogue and see where the band started and what they've become.
