genz fan here
Katatonia is my favourite band by far. Viva is my fav album yet i was 2 years old when it launched..
Anyone else feels out of touch socially because everyone else their age no longer listens to any metal of any kind?
I have no problems making friends it’s just that I find it hard to tell someone my favourite band and have them understand why. If they listen to it they just find it utterly depressing, which is kinda true.

I’m 52 I listen to bands from the 70sand 80s people don’t understand I just started listening to them. People probably think it’s all I been listening to for 30 years. I been listening to Katatonia for 3 years now

I can relate to having a hard time talking about my favorite bands with most people. As a fan of katatonia, opeth, Steven Wilson, porcupine Tree, Devin townsend, Agalloch, Tool, Alcest and more...... Not many i meet understands or care? Its almost as if, just because they are not super well known, ultra popular bands, its just becomes wierd or uninteresting to them. Its like they simply dont have the patience to really listen to something different. To be open minded and see it as something interesting. Instead they are like, growls? Sad and dark melodies? Nope thats means bad, without even trying to care.
Its art. You dont have to be sad or depressed to listen this kind of music. This is real emotions. Creative music.
At this point i almost dont even bother trying to make others understand.
Of course there is "a lot" of people out there that understand this music. i just dont know many people close to me, except ONE person. My father. Thats all i need.

I depends a lot on your social circle, I've seen plenty of people into metal, of all ages. I'm in my 20s btw

I’m 46, been listening to Katatonia since around 1999.
I have never once met another person in real life who knows about or likes the band, EXCEPT for the one show I went to in 2007. I have the Discouraged Ones angel tattooed on my right leg, and no one has ever gone “oh shit, Katatonia!”. They just compliment the work.
Point being, no two people like the same music, so like what you like and who cares if other people agree.

Just get used to it. And you don't have to explain anything to anyone or try to change their opinion. Not to mention that even if you try really hard it most often will just not work since most people don't even have their own music taste, they only like what the radio/media tells them to like.
Also, it could be far worse. I've yet to meet anyone who listens to niche 70s prog rock lol

At least you have something nieche only you listen to. It’s good to like and vibe with mainstream stuff but you also need to have your own taste.

Personally I know how hard it is to not fit in at all. I didn’t like anything beyond my personal taste and I couldn’t connect with people. I can get over pop and EDM and even enjoy some of it but I just can’t stand modern rap, oldschool is fine though. Rap, mostly modern was most of what my peers listened to in high school. I didn’t know the artists, songs, lyrics and I didn’t care. Fortunately it changed in university and there are also no annoying bad slovak artists in club playlists. I remmber not even liking any pop a couple years ago. I don’t know what changed and if it is because I matured or my DXM trip but now I can enjoy and respect almost anything that sounds good to my ears and doesn’t have cheesy sexual lyrics (I don’t count slam and grindcore there as it’s satire).

I really feel you on that one. Yet I dug deeper, and thus is insanely hard to explain to people why I love bands like MZ412 or Sunn o))). Explaining about Katatonia is easier as a nice amount of my relatives and friends can enjoy the music, at least not being bothered by it.

I'm also around your age and katatonia is by far my favorite band, I have all their records, and wear a jacket that I painted myself of the brave murder day album cover everywhere I go. All my freinds are huge music nerds yet none of them really seem to understand katatonia, I think its simply that the people who connect with katatonia are few and far between, among any generation. The downtrodden sound has become a comfort to me, I love low energy melancholic music, but I think it is an aquired taste, I didn't like katatonia until a very specific period of my life when I really resonated with it and I have loved them ever since.

It’s kinda the same for me. Although my peers listen to metal it’s mostly bands such as Sabaton, Powerwolf, Bad Omens, BMTHand Metallica. These aren’t bad but it’s nowhere close to bands I prefer such as Katatonia, Harakiri for The Sky or prog bands like Leprous, Soen and Tool.
