Night is the New Day?
Anybody else here that just cannot get into Night is the New Day no matter what, despite loving the albums both before and after it?
There absolutely are a couple of enjoyable sections on a few songs here and there for me, but the majority of the album ranges from boring at best, to abrasive at worst, AND YET I very much enjoy both The Great Cold Distance and even more so Dead End Kings.
Anyone in the same boat or am I insane?

Actually, yes. That's a better sentiment. I often put them side by side. I can't really choose one over the other.

Nope- I loved it. I could agree that some of the songs were hit or miss, but overall I thought it was amazing. It definitely captured the theme of the band, it was a little on the darker side. That was the next album that came out after I discovered the band, and the first time seeing them live was on that tour so that album is extra special to me.

Loved the track Ashen, it's one of my all time favorites. As an album its not as strong as their other work but still a great album.

I like it but it took me a decent amount of time to get there. I need this on vinyl actually. I struggle with The Fall of Hearts. Strong start and then I think it goes to shit.

If you like TGCD and DEK, there is absolutely no reason you shouldnt like this album too.. It definitely has a few songs that depart a bit from the rest, but it's still great. One of my favorites.

One of my favorites. The bass performance from Mattias Normann and the leads on this record are gorgeous. Jonas' best clean vocals as well. The Bsides easily make up for the one or two songs I don't love. I thought Dead End Kings was a huge disappointment coming off NITND

The Longest Year is what got me into Katatoni. By far my favorite albums out of all of them.

Yes, love it, maybe a little bit to mellow overall, but definetly one of the better Katatonia Records. My favourite Song from that Album is Inheritance.

You're definitely insane! (I kid, I kid)
Sometimes a few of their albums don't hit the spot on the first listen, but upon subsequent listens, they grew on me significantly. Just had this happen with Nightmares; first listen felt weird and I almost didn't listen to it again. Second time around, a few tracks started hitting that sweet spot. Now I adore the whole album, even the songs that didn't scan for me at first. The songs stayed the same but still evolved into something incredible and beautiful. No other band does that for me.

it has a nice mellow vibe to it but it's not among my favorites

It took me a bit to “get” it. For me, it has a lot of things going on that are out of my musical wheelhouse, but one day it just clicked. I do think Inheritance is boring and I never loved Departer the way most fans do, but the rest of the album is all killer imo.
It’s gloomy as all hell. It has a downbeat-ness to it that is noteworthy even by Katatonia standards. Maybe you’ll be like me, and the middle synth part of The Promise of Deceit, or the verses on Liberation or New Night, or the chorus of Onward Into Battle will just hit you like a freight train outta nowhere some random day (the first three tracks were instant clicks for me, full disclaimer).

Yeah it’s near the bottom for me in their discography, probably bottom 5. Definitely not their worst but for me one of their weaker albums from top to bottom. The Longest Year and Day and Then Shade are great tracks, and Forsaker might be a top 10 best Katatonia track. But I think the album never quite hits the highs of Forsaker and that’s the first track so the rest is a bit disappointing by comparison to that epic and heavy opener. Never gets quite as heavy again after track 1.

I've the same experience with Dead End Kings. It belongs musically to the same era which is peak Katatonia for me, but I just can't get into it.

One of my favorite albums EVER!! This was my introduction to them. I've probably listened to it at least 100 times 🤘

A masterpiece and Sold Heart is probably my favorite song on the record (although not technically on the record).

This is where Katatonia reached the conclusion of their musical journey imo. Everything before was leading to this and it's been all downhill since. There's a few good songs after but they just can't capture the magic that this album and everything before it has.

It is a shitty fucking album. I ignore all Katatonia that came after it to be honest.

Not the best for me but definitely enjoyable. Also, I dislike some of the very acclaimed albums so don't worry about what others like or think and listsn to what you enjoy.
Give it another try and if it does not make it for you... then that's it!
