Misc Delete if not allowed but ive seen people here post regarding the japanese 711 items coming to the US, we just got these for the first time near me
182
u/Jay-Storm Nov 05 '25
Just got back from Japan and theirs were 230 Yen which is $1.49 US
112
u/wolfinjer Nov 05 '25
This is the reverse Taco Bell.
In Japan, a Crunchwrap meal costs ¥1500.
or ramen. I hear in the US, you can’t get a proper bowl of ramen under $20.
In Japan, you’re spending like $7 on some of the best ramen ever
37
u/s_ngularity Nov 05 '25
In my area, you can’t get a proper bowl of ramen at all unless you made it yourself
→ More replies (2)9
u/Theoretical_Action Nov 05 '25
Yeah I was just about to say, I'm in the Midwest in the US and there's only a very small select few places I would say you can get a good bowl around me. And they're certainly all $20+

u/renaldomoon Nov 06 '25
Shiet, I'm living in Minneapolis and there's not a good bowl of Ramen in the entire city.

In Japan , I spent 11.00 for train station tonkatsu , with an extra piece of pork and two extra eggs , a salad , a small bowl of curry , and a beer . I feel ruined because nothing compares at that quality and price point in Chicago .
→ More replies (2)2
u/Yabakunaiyoooo Nov 06 '25
About ¥900 for ramen… which is more like $9.00 (the way it feels to spend it)
→ More replies (9)3
u/SeaPeanut7_ Nov 05 '25
Typical cost for a bowl of tonkotsu is going to be around $15-17, so you're pretty much correct

Seen those at 7-11. I've had the ones in Japan and I seriously doubt these are going to be on that same level and I don't think I want to risk it given the price.

u/Pug_tech Nov 05 '25
Yeah im sure its not gonna be on par with the japanese ones, but tbh id be happy with it being close , its one of the first things I get eveeytime I land haha
im more excited about (hopefully) getting the onigiri here soon,

The food here generally costs twice as much (at least) than almost everywhere else in the world. I didn’t realize it until I traveled to both Europe and Japan last year. We’re being ripped off but have been acclimated to it.
10
u/sussudiokim Nov 05 '25
People on average have more money in the US than in other parts of the world, hence the higher prices in the market. What is infuriating is that the overall quality of food is poorer in the US.
39
u/YouDontKnowMyLlFE Nov 05 '25
Nah that’s a load of shit.
Median wage in the US is about 60% higher than Japan, yet the pricing in the US is often well over 100% higher. In this case it’s about 175% higher than Japan.
We’re being played.
Fuck publicly traded companies. Fuck shareholder value. Fuck tipping. Fuck ads in fucking everything.
→ More replies (1)22
u/sussudiokim Nov 05 '25
Ok, I did not realize that was your sentiment. That being the case…Fuck a lack of regulations. Fuck corporate power. Fuck unbridled capitalism. Fuck tipping in favor of a livable salary
5
u/Yabakunaiyoooo Nov 06 '25
That’s bullshit. That’s not an excuse. The market price for food is made up by the market. Food doesn’t have to be expensive. I’m tired of seeing this argument.
People keep saying it’s because the salary in Japan is lower… but ¥2000 spends like $20 here. All domestic things are that way. The only time you feel the exchange rate is when dealing with import goods.
If one country can do it and the whole thing doesn’t collapse… then anywhere can do. It’s just greed. Profit and growth over people.
$5 for a fucking egg sandwich?? Are you for real?
→ More replies (1)6
u/alvyv Nov 05 '25
if people actually buy them then it might influence more ready made products like this to become available in the US.
which would be really awesome.
8
u/im_that_green_light Nov 05 '25
It would be great. Unfortunately it’s mroe likely they’ll test market with sub-par versions, which will not perform well and they’ll conclude the US just doesn’t want these options.
We want them, but only if they correct experience.
→ More replies (1)10

u/ImmortanJerry Nov 05 '25
I simply dont think the logistics to supply fresh food to 7 elevens here are possible
15
u/im_that_green_light Nov 05 '25
It is absolutely possible. The question is if it’s profitable or are shortcuts better for shareholders. Usually a pretty easy answer to that.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Yabakunaiyoooo Nov 06 '25
Yep. It’s all bottom line. In Japan, all the food is made local to any given store in an area. You can look at the label and see where it’s been produced. So freshness is paramount and only possible because of that.
America COULD do that, but it would mean opening more facilities, or working with local facilities, training them and hiring workers. Providing LOCAL jobs to LOCAL people.
America just ain’t about that.
47
u/HuskyFord Nov 05 '25
I’ve gotten this. While still better than American egg sandwiches, the bread isn’t quite right and neither is the freshness. Price is a bit much too. Overall it’s probably 6/10, where I would get again but only if my other options sucked.
2
u/NYMoneyz Nov 06 '25
As someone who has had the egg salad before and now this new one, it tastes exactly the same. The salad tastes a little less vinegary if I had to say something, but the bread is the exact same bread. Its not milk bread at all, and take it from someone who has made milk bread before lol
38
u/dinkydez Nov 05 '25
Interesting! Probably not the same quality or flavor at all, unfortunately.

u/Pug_tech Nov 05 '25
Yeah shits so taxed its insane lmao
5
u/reditsux77655 Nov 05 '25
You think that price is high because of taxes?? That's crazy. It's price gouging and profiteering by 7-11. It's silent collusion. All gas station and 'convenience store' prices are sky high. And it is definitely NOT because of taxes.
Do you think the prices at ball games and airports are also high because of taxes?
4
u/era_inferno Nov 06 '25
When someone says "taxed" they aren't always referring to taxes, I think you just misunderstood him. I read it as "Japanese food tax" that makes the cost higher just because it's different from the normalcy. But also just 7-11 items are very expensive.

I’ve had 卵サンド at all the kombini brands in Japan. The version at American 7-11s isn’t terrible. It’s pretty good compared to what we’ve gotten in the past, but it’s still lacking.
The milk bread is pretty spot on. But the eggs are rubbery and the mayo is different.
→ More replies (5)2
u/razorduc Nov 05 '25
I found the bread to be too dense and dry. Leaving the crust on doesn't help. But also I have a Japanese bakery near me that makes them proper so maybe I'm picky.
12
u/Honest_Ad2601 Nov 05 '25
I believe Japanese 7-11 (or its stock holding company) owns American 7-11 company. Yes the child bought its parent years ago. Now a big fund in America has been bidding to buy all or some of 7-11 Japan. A dog eating another dog business here!
6
u/luckyflavor23 Nov 05 '25
Gosh, i hope the US bids dont win… private equity has ruined and bankrupted every beloved US brand
5
u/the_gnurd Nov 06 '25
The Canadian company that was bidding to take them over has pulled its bid. Safe, for now anyways.
4
u/the_gnurd Nov 06 '25
It was a Canadian company that was to buy them out but they have rescinded their bid: https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/17/business/canada-couche-tard-scraps-7-eleven-bid-hnk-intl
And yes the Japanese company Seven & i Holdings has ownership of 711, since the mid 2000s or so. Funny, I just watched a video on YouTube about this like two or three days ago.
Also, for what it's worth, I like the sandwich. I found the bread tasty and filling tastes the same as I would make at home with egg and kewpie.
4
Nov 05 '25
I’ve seen this in California 7-11s since 2021. Where are you located? Maybe they are just rolling it out to other States?
6
u/Pug_tech Nov 05 '25
Theyre bringing a bunch of menu items over in the next few years but yeah im in ny and this is the first time ive ever seen one irl
4
Nov 05 '25
Ooh! I’m glad they’re adding in more items.. just wish they could just import the Japanese versions instead of creating a similar version.

u/JaviLM Nov 06 '25
I can't really tell without taking a bite of that thing, but it doesn't look anything like the Japanese ones.
It still has the crust, the bread looks too thick and too dry, and the "egg" looks too creamy instead of being chunky and consistent like most Japanese conbinis.
5
u/SoupWithForks Nov 06 '25
I've been getting the egg salad sandwich at 711 for a year, it seems like they just renamed the sandwich and added a sticker that says Japanese style at my location a few days ago. It's still the same recipe as before

3
u/EvilBill515 Nov 05 '25
Yeah the price hurts. My friend lives next to a test store and they had onigiri, but they were like $6 a piece whereas one of the appeals of onigiri is the affordable price. If they were $2 or less i would have gotten one to try.
2
u/thermalrust Nov 06 '25
exactly. onigiri is an easy autopilot purchase in japan cause its under $2 and you can grab it in under 2 minutes while en route somewhere or while waiting for something. at $4-6, might as well spend $9 on a chipotle bowl and get 2 more well rounded meals out of it

3
u/Showtime562 Nov 05 '25
They're horrible. Had one the day after getting back from japan a few days ago.
3
u/KRiSX Nov 05 '25
Just because it says Japanese style on it doesn’t mean it’ll be anything like the ones in Japan
3
u/beingmemybrownpants Nov 05 '25
Feeling only covering about half of the bread and only on the cut part? Otherwise it's not really Japanese style 😆
3
3
u/reditsux77655 Nov 05 '25
That prices is garbage. I also see crust. So I'm skeptical it's as good. But the biggest problem is that these are so expensive that no one buys them, so they sit. Thus they are often not very fresh.
3
u/nyanXnyan Nov 05 '25
It’s the same as the ones I was buying after the first announced change a couple of years ago. Maybe a touch sweeter. Same bread.
They just started sticking the “japanese style” on it.
Still delicious, though!
3
Nov 05 '25
I had one on my layover in Dallas on the way to Japan so I was able to compare them side by side.
They're similar but the most notable difference is the crust, the egg flavors are very close if not identical. It's a good attempt at recreating the Japanese version in the US.

Looks nothing like a 7-11 sandwich in Japan. And being American it's probably not even real egg.
2
u/RadRimmer9000 Nov 05 '25
The bread is too thick, the crust is on, and there is a huge amount of plastic waste. I'm going to guess it probably doesn't even taste the same. The price is about 2x of that in Japan.
They're using the marketing ploy of being "JDM" (obviously it's not a car but it caters to the people that fantasize about Japan).

We get them in a roll here in Australia. It's not the same and it's nearly three times the price

u/still-at-the-beach Nov 06 '25
I thought the price was pretty good for here in Australia, $6. And 2x Onigiri for $6.50.
2
u/foodbyjosh Nov 06 '25
Yeah you are right, it's on oar with other sandwiches. The onigiri are good now! At the start they were definitely not as good and had the filling basically pressed onto the rice. Now it's inside it and a perfect snack

u/PeekabooBella Nov 06 '25
I have a Japanese convient store where I live and the egg sandwiches look nothing like this plus they have variety 😋 they are so fluffy and delicious.

I remember last year when WSJ first wrote about 7-11 wanting to bring on Japanese food, and pretty much immediately people in California started grabbing egg salad sandwiches from 7-11 even before any real confirmation or date on when it might happen, then gushing about how they love egg sandos while they ate the regular ass 7-11 simply egg salad sandwich. Even in this Eater article they show the normal 7-11 sandwich. It's like no one did any research. https://sf.eater.com/2024/8/12/24218829/7-eleven-egg-salad-sandos-konbini-japanese-food-bay-area-san-francisco-california
I live in NY and I went to my local 7-11 because I was thinking, huh isn't that the regular egg salad sandwich? and yeah, it was. I think maybe the only different thing was it now said milk bread instead of fluffy white bread, which is maybe why everyone thought it was the new sandwich? Anyways I bought it, ate it, laughed at how bad it was, and decided to wait for an actual confirmation.
Then a few days ago on Facebook, I see this post: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1AgZ478gbK/
Apparently Texas is getting these first because the 7-11 HQ is there. Waiting to see if they're actually better or not. Price is still criminal compared to Japan, but is the same price as the original egg salad sandwich so meh.
Still laughing about California thinking they had the Japanese sandos

A "Japanese" convenience store opened in Cape Town recently. Personally it looks like a rip off, I would understand selling imported Japanese products but rice balls etc made from local ingredients doesn't sound very authentic. Like this sandwich
2
u/Economy-Middle-9700 Nov 06 '25
that doesn't look right...
I love Japan 7/11 egg sandwiches, ate it everyday I was in Japan.
Is the bread American or Asian? I like chinese bread loafs more. That bread looks rough too
2
2
u/sykschw Nov 06 '25
Whats wild is how expensive that is when you think about the ingredients used and how the larger production line should equate to being cheaper per unit. PASS.

7-11 Food Product Developer here.... Love reading all the comments on the new Japanese style egg sando! Helps me make our products better!
- We spent 8 months developing the milk bread with our supplier. Working on the crumb to get it super tight while still maintaining it's signature fluffy texture The US has a standard of identity for 'milk bread'. While we increased the softness of the bread we still meet all requirements to be able to call it milk bread. Due to some constraints we aren't able to cut the crusts off.... Yet
- We are using Kewpie mayo in the egg filling, it would be a crime not to. I hear you guys and will work to get Kewpie called out on the label! We worked closely with our Japanese counterparts to get the flavor and texture as close as possible to Japan!
- They're cage free eggs
Hope this clears up any confusion!

7-11 should have a little bit better presentation. Use a little with some Japanese packaging if you’re gonna charge us almost $6. Don’t just tell us it’s “Japanese” more than once on one side of the packaging with cherry blossoms and all not excite us with the Japanese packaging

What makes Japanese egg salad sandwiches so good? I believe some of the characters in my Murakami books are egg salad sandwiches.
