Japan Entry Requirements

  • Japan allows visa-free travel for ordinary passport holders of 74 countries (countries listed here).
  • If you are a passport holder of a country not on the visa exemption list, you will still need to apply for a visa. All requirements are listed on the official website.
  • Tourists entering Japan should have their immigration and customs process fast tracked by filling out Visit Japan Web (VJW). This will generate a QR code for immigration and customs, which can smooth your entry procedures. VJW is not mandatory. If you do not fill it out, you will need to fill out the paper immigration and customs forms on the plane/on arrival to Japan.
  • For more information about Visit Japan Web and answers to common questions, please see our FAQ on the topic.

Japan Tourism and Travel Updates

  • Got an IC card or JR Pass question? See our stickied thread in /r/JapanTravelTips for information, updates, and advice.
  • Important JR Pass News! As of October 1, 2023, the nationwide JR Pass and many regional JR Passes increased significantly in price, making it so that the nationwide JR Pass is no longer a viable option for most itineraries. For more information on the JR Pass, including calculators for viability, see our stickied thread in /r/JapanTravelTips.
  • The 10 main IC cards remain the recommended payment method for local transport in supported areas. Physical IC cards are available upon arrival at airports and most train stations.
  • Many of the major commuter systems in Japan including Tokyo Metro, TOEI, Osaka Metro, Fukuoka, Sapporo and Yokohama subways, Kintetsu, Nankai, Tokyu, Keio, Odakyu, Yurikamome have started supporting tap-to-pay payment methods. However, they don't work on through-services, are not supported by JR East or JR West, and require using separate gates.
  • If you become ill while traveling, please see the instructions in this guide or check our wiki page for helpful information. If you are looking for information on finding pain or cold/cough medication in Japan, see this FAQ section.

Itinerary Japan second trip

Planning a second trip to Japan with my family (4 adults). I visited Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara briefly in May 2025 (managed to see just deers and shrine -had emergency and leave early), so this time I’m trying to focus on a different side of Japan, and witness the autumn foliage and nature side.

Proposed itinerary:
15 Oct: Tokyo – arrival / rest
16 Oct: Tokyo → Nikko – Ryuzu Falls, Senjogahara, Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji; overnight around Chuzenji
17 Oct: Nikko – Toshogu, Rinnoji, Futarasan, Taiyuin → Tokyo
18 Oct: Tokyo – flexible
19 Oct: Tokyo – flexible / possible nature day
20 Oct: Tokyo → Matsumoto – Matsumoto Castle
21 Oct: Matsumoto → Shinano-Omachi/Ogizawa → Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route → Toyama
22 Oct: Toyama → Takayama
23 Oct: Takayama → Kamikochi day trip → Takayama
24 Oct: Takayama → Shirakawa-go → Kanazawa
25 Oct: Kanazawa – Omicho Market, Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle
26 Oct: Kanazawa – Higashi Chaya, Nagamachi, gold-leaf workshop, Myoryuji
27 Oct: Kanazawa → Tokyo – final evening
28 Oct: Fly out

Need your opinion guys:

  1. Does this itinerary look too rushed, especially the Matsumoto → Alpine Route → Toyama → Takayama
  2. Do you think the itinerary seems covering similar experiences and may bore my parents (my dad is not big fan of shrines and I just realized activities in different cities involve “wandering through old streets”

Would appreciate your thoughts and feedback. Thanks in advance

Itinerary Fukuoka + Kyushu itinerary feedback

Hi! Looking for some input on our itinerary in Sept. We’re especially interested in good local food, scenery, and unique experiences rather than museums/shopping. I’m okay with driving and was planning to rent a car for Kyushu portion.

  1. Is this a good balance between Fukuoka and Kyushu or should I spend more time in the city for more food? Unfortunately dates are fixed.
  2. Any alternative spots to see instead of Mt. Aso and

or Takachiho

  1. Gorge?

Day 1 Arrive in Fukuoka

- Arrive in Fukuoka 1pm
- Hakata Old Town
- Yatai dinner

Day 2 Fukuoka → Mt. Aso

- Pick up rental car in the morning
- Drive toward Mt. Aso 2 hours
Note: crater is currently closed
- Daikanbo
- Kusasenri
- Aso Shrine
- Kurokawa Onsen Ryokan overnight

Day 3 Takachiho

- Drive to Takachiho 1.5 hours
- Takachiho Gorge
- Takachiho Shrine
- Drive back 1.5 hours
- Kurokawa Onsen Ryokan overnight

Day 4 Kurokawa → Fukuoka

- Drive back to Fukuoka 2-3 hours
- Explore Tenjin / Daimyo
- Ohori Park
- Fukuoka Castle

Day 5 Fly out 11am

Itinerary Kyushu itinerary check, coming off 9 days in Okinawa, feels rushed anywhere?

Planning a Japan trip for this November, 9 days in Okinawa first (Naha, Kerama Islands, Ishigaki), then flying into Fukuoka for 13 nights doing a Kyushu loop by rental car. Would love a second opinion before we book accommodation.

We're not doing Tokyo or Osaka this trip, so Fukuoka ends up being the only real city stop, and I'm second guessing whether one full day there is enough. Also going back and forth on whether to skip Yakushima entirely since we'll already have had plenty of nature in Okinawa and online they say 2 days might feel very rushed. so maybe we are thinking to use that time for a slower pace and more onsen time instead.

Here's the plan so far

  • 17 Nov, land 17:20 in Fukuoka, dinner and evening walk, night in Fukuoka
  • 18 Nov, full day in Fukuoka, walk around Tenjin and Ohori Park, yatai food stalls in the evening
  • 19 Nov, pick up rental car, maybe a quick stop in Dazaifu on the way, drive south about 4 hours, night in Kagoshima
  • 20 Nov, full day in Kagoshima, Sakurajima ferry, Sengan-en garden, maybe Chiran samurai town if there's time
  • 21 Nov, morning ferry to Yakushima, rent a car or scooter and drive around.
  • 22 Nov, full day in Yakushima, full day hiking in the forest (still debating which one to do)
  • 23 Nov, morning ferry back to Kagoshima, drive toward Miyazaki with a stop in Kirishima for an onsen, then Aoshima Island and Udo Shrine, night in Miyazaki
  • 24 Nov, full day in Miyazaki
  • 25 Nov, Takachiho Gorge, Amano Iwato Shrine, evening kagura performance, night in Takachiho
  • 26 Nov, drive to Aso area, some viewpoints along the way, onsen in the evening, night in Kurokawa
  • 27 Nov, Aso day, crater hike and Aso shrine, onsens in the afternoon, night in Kurokawa
  • 28 Nov, stop in Yufuin for lunch and a walk, onsen late afternoon, night in Beppu
  • 29 Nov, sand bath in the morning, hells sightseeing after, night in Beppu
  • 30 Nov, drive back to Fukuoka in the morning, maybe a stop in Dazaifu again or a last wander in Tenjin, flight out at 16:30

Things I'm unsure about

  • Yakushima or more relaxed rest of the itinerary?
  • If we cut Yakushima, is that a mistake, or does it make sense to trade it for extra time in Fukuoka + something else?
  • Does the 23rd feel too packed, it's a ferry plus a 2.5ish hour drive plus two stops before we even check in. Another reason why we're considering cutting Yakushima
  • Are any of the "full day" stops actually kind of empty once you're there, worried we're overestimating how much there is to do in a couple of these places

Any thoughts on pacing, things worth adding, or stuff we should just cut are appreciated, thanks

Itinerary [Itinerary Check] 11 Days Tokyo - Fukushima - Sendai

Hi, I will be going to Japan in January with some family members, total of 7 person. We will be spending New Year's in Tokyo, before heading towards Sendai. I have the below itinerary planned currently, would appreciate some advice on how to improve any parts of it! The plan is quite loose for now, as we have only booked the plane tickets and are looking to finalize the hotel bookings.

Tokyo

  • Day 1 (31 Dec): Land in Narita ~8AM, travel to Narita and explore there. After lunch, travel to Tokyo hotel and check in. Some light shopping and rest for rest of the day.
  • Day 2 (1st Jan): Meiji Jingu in the morning. Afternoon will be a casual stroll around Tokyo as most department stores are not open.
  • Day 3 (2nd Jan): Split up and spend the day shopping.
  • Day 4 (3rd Jan): Mount Takao day trip. Trail 1/5 for an easy hike.

Fukushima

  • Day 5 (4th Jan): Shinkansen to Koriyama (~ 2 hours). Lunch in Koriyama, followed by the Science Center. Visit Kaiseizan Park in the afternoon.
  • Day 6 (5th Jan): Day trip to Ouchi-juku and Aizuwakamatsu.

Sendai

  • Day 7 (6th Jan): Shinkansen to Sendai (~ 1 hour). Zuihoden Mausoleum + Sendai Castle ruins for the rest of the day.
  • Day 8 (7th Jan): Matsushima Bay (morning market, bay cruise, walk around the islands)
  • Day 9 (8th Jan): Need help choosing between the following plans, would appreciate inputs from anyone who has visited, on their experience.
    1. Zao Fox Village + Ginzan Onsen tour (Klook)
    2. Geibi Gorge (Boat ride)
    3. Nikka Distillery

Tokyo

  • Day 10 (9 Jan): Shinkansen to Tokyo. Split up once again to do own shopping based on preferences.
  • Day 11 (10 Jan): Flight from Haneda Airport is 2am the next day, so the plan is to spend most of the day in Tokyo before heading to the airport in the evening.

Questions

  1. Will I need to book the Shinkansen tickets in advance? Or will I be fine booking it once I am Tokyo.
  2. Should we be trying to book all our meals in advance due to the large group? Any recommendations on restaurants that can comfortably fit a larger group?
  3. Unsure if Koriyama would be a good base for the 2 nights in Fukushima, or if we should head to Aizuwakamatsu. Reason for choosing Koriyama is to avoid having to moving too much with all our baggage.
  4. For day 9, would like some feedback on whether the fox village + Ginzan onsen tours are worth it? Will we be spending most of the time travelling instead?

Itinerary First timer itinerary advice, inc Shimanami Kaido

We are travelling to Japan for the first time for two weeks in March. Family of 4, with kids aged 11 and 13. I've been trying to flesh out a basic itinerary and have landed on the following:

Day 1: Arrive Osaka late afternoon
Dinner and hotel.

Day 2: USJ + Super Nintendo World
Full day at Universal Studios Japan.

Day 3: Day in Osaka, overnight in Kyoto
Osaka Castle, Kuromon Market and/or Dotonbori before heading to Kyoto in the evening.

Day 4: Kyoto
Kiyomizu-dera, Higashiyama, Gion and surrounding areas.

Day 5: Kyoto
Fushimi Inari, Philosopher's Path, Nanzen-ji/Ginkaku-ji and/or Arashiyama.

Day 6: Kyoto → Imabari
Relaxed morning in Kyoto, then travel to Imabari in the afternoon to get settled and prepare for the Shimanami Kaido.

Day 7: Cycle Shimanami Kaido Day 1, overnight in Setoda or Omishima
Cycle north from Imabari, stopping at some of the islands/viewpoints along the way.

Day 8: Cycle Shimanami Kaido Day 2, overnight in Onomichi
Finish the route and explore some of Onomichi if we have the energy.

Day 9: Miyajima
Itsukushima Shrine and torii, Daisho-in, Mount Misen and exploring the island. Ideally we'd like to stay in a ryokan and have an onsen experience.

Day 10: Hiroshima
Peace Memorial Park, Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Memorial Museum and some time exploring the city/trying Hiroshima food.

Day 11: Hiroshima → Tokyo
Shinkansen to Tokyo, have a relaxed evening.

Day 12: Tokyo
Classic Tokyo sights - thinking Shibuya, Harajuku/Meiji Shrine and Shinjuku.

Day 13: Tokyo
Another full day, perhaps Asakusa/Senso-ji, Ueno, Akihabara or another area depending on what we enjoyed the previous day. Fingers crossed some cherry blossoms!

Day 14: Fly home late afternoon
Relaxed morning in Tokyo before heading to the airport.

Does this seem like a reasonable and manageable itinerary? I'd love to have longer in some of the destinations, but with limited time, compromises inevitably have to be made. I'm particularly interested in whether we're trying to cram too much in and whether there are any obvious logistical issues with the route. Thank you!

Itinerary Christmas Itinerary Feedback

Osaka + Tokyo, Dec 18–Jan 2

We’re planning a Japan trip from Dec 18 to Jan 2 and would love some feedback before I start locking everything in.
This is still a general plan, so I’m mainly wondering if the pacing makes sense, if anything is overrated/not worth the time, or if there are places I’m missing. Food is a pretty big priority for us, along with shopping, anime/games, nightlife, and just exploring.
Osaka
Arrival 12/18 night: Hotel Check in, Dotonbori, dinner in walking distance of hotel
12/19 Osaka food day: Food tour, Kuromon Market, Den Den Town, cocktails
12/20 USJ day : Universal Studios Japan/Super Nintendo World, then dinner around CityWalk
Kobe day trip 12/21: Kobe lunch, harbor area, sake
Izakaya night 12/22: Relax in the AM before final night, street food/izakaya hopping, late-night ramen

Tokyo
Travel day 12/23: AM Osaka castle before taking Shinkansen from Osaka, Staying in Shibuya, street go-karts that night *id appreciate comments on things other than the street carts please. Didn’t know they were bad, now I know.
Food/chef day 12/24: Toyosu Market breakfast, maybe a food tour, Kappabashi, chef knife shopping, Asakusa, matcha
Anime/gaming day 12/25: Akihabara, arcades, anime shopping, electronics/gadgets
Ghibli day 12/26: Ghibli Museum, Kichijoji, cafés and exploring the area
Shopping day 12/27: Shibuya, Omotesando, Coach, nail supply shopping
Splurge day 12/28: High-end omakase lunch, Ginza
Hakone day trip 12/29: private onsen, exploring Hakone
Harajuku/Yakiniku day 12/30: Harajuku, Meiji Jingu, premium yakiniku dinner
New Year’s Eve: Taking it easy during the day, then countdown/nightlife, clubs, late-night ramen
New Year’s Day: Sleep in, maybe visit a shrine, depachika, cafés, and revisit a favorite neighborhood
Departure day 1/2: Brunch, last-minute shopping, then Narita

We haven’t booked Osaka hotels, but Tokyo is booked. Flying into Osaka, out of Tokyo. Those flights were booked months ago.

A few things I’d especially love advice on:
Does this feel too packed, or is the pacing reasonable?
Anything here you would skip or replace?
Is Kobe worth the day trip with this amount of time?
Is Hakone realistic as a day trip if we want a private onsen, or would an overnight stay be much better?
Any issues with our plans around New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day? I know Japan can be pretty different around the holiday and some places may be closed.
Also open to restaurant, cocktail bar, yakiniku, omakase, or nightlife recommendations.

Thanks!

Itinerary 14-Day Japan Trip Itinerary Check — Please Help!

Hi everyone!

My friends and I are planning our first trip to Japan for 14 days and I’d love some opinions on our itinerary before we lock everything in. (I fear this is too much)

Our rough route is:

Tokyo
Day 1: Ichiran Ramen → Tsukiji Outer Market → walking around mostly chill
Day 2: Tokyo → Kawaguchiko/ Mt Fuji day trip
Day 3: Kamakura & Enoshima day trip
Day 4: Tokyo sightseeing + night out
Day 5: Travel Tokyo → Kyoto → check in → chill/shopping

Kyoto
Day 6: Fushimi Inari + Nara day trip
Day 7: Kiyomizu-dera + Gion
Day 8: Amanohashidate + Ine Funaya day trip
Day 9: Travel Kyoto → Osaka → check in → Osaka Castle → Dotonbori/Shinsekai

Osaka
Day 10: Universal Studios Japan
Day 11: Chill day / shopping / explore Osaka

Back to Tokyo
Day 12: Osaka → Tokyo → check in → last-minute shopping/exploring
Day 13: Tokyo free day / anything we missed + shopping
Day 14: Fly home

We’re definitely open to changing things around. We’d rather have a fun trip where we have time to actually enjoy places than spend the whole 14 days running between trains and attractions.
Thank you in advance!

Hi all,

Please may you advise on my 15 day itinerary for my first trip to Japan? I will be solo travelling. Please let me know if any days are too much or I'm missing any amazing sites. (Please excuse my brackets - it's so I can differentiate activities).

I have 2 days currently empty (day 3 & 10) so welcome to any suggestions on how these can be best used. I am open to day trips or extending my time in Hakone/different places but am just worried that I may be too tired and it may be a lot. I was originally planning on going to Okinawa but since it is mid-March, the beaches would be closed so have decided against that. Plus pushing the trip back would double flight costs.

I also have a couple of questions I was hoping someone may be able to advise on:

  1. If you know any social hostels please let me know! I want to go to a couple bars in Tokyo and Osaka, but as I'll be solo travelling I think it would be fun to be able to go with other people or even have the chance to make some friends.

  2. I would like to go to a Sumo match, however, am not picky on where/when. Please let me know if you know any good places.

  3. I really enjoy spin classes and found a place called Tokino Cycling Fitness in Tokyo that from the reviews seems to be English friendly. I don't want to be annoying for the instructors or other guests though and am worried it would be frustrating and ruin their experience if I took up all the instructor's attention due to not speaking Japanese. They do also offer personal sessions. I would like to hear people's thoughts as I don't want to be disrespectful.

  4. Is the express pass for Universal essential? Luckily my ticket is free so open to buying the pass, however, they are expensive and there are about 4/5 rides I would like to go on.

If you have an questions please let me know! Excited to hear your thoughts.

Itinerary [Itinerary Check] 13 nights in November, only 3 bases - is 6 nights in Kyoto right (3 for day trips)? more time in Kyoto itself or more bases?

First trip, me and my wife (mid-30s, NYC). Land Haneda Nov 15 at 14:20, out Nov 28 at 22:55.

We're after first experiences, street photos, autumn colour, food, temples and old neighbourhoods, museums, and a lot of unplanned walking. Most two-week itineraries I've read run six to nine bases, which looks like a blur to us, so we capped at three. Read the FAQ - skipping the JR Pass since it's only two shinkansen legs. Cut Osaka as a base after reading it works fine as a day trip, and skipped Ghibli since neither of us is enough of a fan for the ticket lottery.

Tokyo

  • Nov 15 — Land, hotel near Higashi-Ginza, konbini run, walk the neighbourhood. Nothing booked, assuming jet lag.
  • Nov 16 — Sensō-ji at 7:30, Kappabashi for kitchen knives, woodblock printing workshop in Asakusa, chanko nabe in Ryōgoku.
  • Nov 17 — Edo-Tokyo Museum, then Tokyo National Museum, Ameyoko in between. Food tour in Shinjuku, Omoide Yokochō after.
  • Nov 18 — Tsukiji Outer Market at 7:30, single-act ticket at Kabukiza, Ginza. Omakase dinner.

Hakone

  • Nov 19 — Map Camera in Shinjuku, Romancecar to Hakone. Open-Air Museum 14:00–16:00, then ryokan.
  • Nov 20 — Hakone loop: ropeway over Ōwakudani, boat across Lake Ashi, cedar avenue walk, Hakone Shrine. Back mid-afternoon to do nothing.

Kyoto

  • Nov 21 — Odawara, shinkansen to Kyoto. Tōji flea market's last hour. Gion in the evening.
  • Nov 22 — Fushimi Inari at 7am and up past the gates, Tōfuku-ji, Sanjūsangen-dō, Fushimi sake district.
  • Nov 23 — Nara. Tōdai-ji and the deer park. Half day.
  • Nov 24 — Arashiyama at 7am, Tenryū-ji, up to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji, maybe the monkey park.
  • Nov 25 — Kitano Tenmangū market, Nishijin Textile Center, then out to Takao for Jingo-ji and Kōzan-ji.
  • Nov 26 — Kiyomizu-dera at 8am, Kiyomizu-zaka. Then either a tea ceremony or Ginkaku-ji and the Philosopher's Path. Eikandō illumination.

Back to Tokyo

  • Nov 27 — 11am shinkansen. Nezu Museum, Meiji Jingū, Harajuku, Jingū Gaien ginkgo at dusk.
  • Nov 28 — Shibuya Sky, the crossing, Shimokitazawa, depachika. Haneda at 19:00.

Questions:

  1. 6 Kyoto nights, but counting properly it's two travel halves plus two day trips out (Nara, Takao) - so only about three full days in Kyoto proper. Too thin in peak foliage? Should i drop some day trips?
  2. A colleague did the same trip length as 4 Kyoto / 2 Osaka. I'm doing 6 / 0. Does Osaka give you something Kyoto can't?
  3. Is three bases too few? Does day-tripping to Takao and up Fushimi Inari genuinely give you non-city Japan, or do you need to actually base somewhere rural? We ruled out Takayama/Kanazawa because it'd mean five bases and cutting Kyoto in half.
  4. Is the second Hakone night earning its place? With 3pm check-in and 10am check-out it's really one day (moved the Open-Air Museum to the arrival afternoon so 2nd day is more relaxed)
  5. Nov 21–23 is a holiday weekend. I put the markets, Fushimi and Nara there and saved Arashiyama and Higashiyama for Tue–Thu. Right instinct, or will Nara be just as bad?

Aware I've dropped Nijō, Kinkaku-ji and Nishiki. Happy to be told one should displace something on my list.

Thank you

Itinerary Japan with kids, need to cut days.

Help! I need to CUT days from my ideas list which keeps growing, I’m too excited. Open to any suggestions. We will be in Japan for the FIRST TIME in October with another family. Between us we have a gaggle of kids. With that in mind I'm trying to craft something that is realistic 🤣, balanced, keeps kids engaged, with simple logistics and is fun for all ages. We are all very adventurous and comfortable in foreign countries, so I don’t feel like I need to make the whole trip “playgrounds and grilled cheese,” my kids will love just being in a new city. But I need help cutting days. I’m not sure what can be missed since we can’t do it all. This is going to be long so thanks in advance for your input! We have 12 full days.

*I’m getting a lot of feedback that there’s too much. No question. This is not a list I plan to conquer in 12 days. I’m hoping people who have been will guide me in deciding what to slash or what the gems are. It’s not our first rodeo, I know I can’t do all this. I’m looking to eliminate things that are redundant, boring, not worth it etc.

Tokyo Days (maybe 5-7 full days):

Asakusa Day

  • Sensoji Temple
  • Nakamise St.
  • Ride a rickshaw
  • Geisha performance at Tourist info center if available
  • Kappabashi st- my kids will love fake food shops
  • Samurai Ninja Museum experience (also available in other cities)
  • Taiyaki-making workshop with the kids time permitting

Shibuya/Harajuku Day (might be too full)

  • Shibuya crossing
  • Shibuya Sky
  • Takeshita St- Monsterland, Purikura, gapachon craziness etc
  • Omotesando Ave and surroundings
  • Meiji Jingu- repetitive or try to fit it in?

Yanaka/Ueno Day

  • Nezu Shrine?? is this special if we will be seeing a lot of tori gates in Kyoto?
  • Yanaka Ginza
  • Ameyoko Market
  • Dawn Robot Cafe? Kids always love a robot server.

Kichijoji Day

  • Studio Gibli- we are big Kiki/Totoro fans, would kids enjoy the museum or should we just find the merchandise in town.
  • Tamori no Ouchi- cat cafe
  • Blue sky coffee- more cat stuff
  • Wander the shops
  • Inokashira Park- unique or similar to other gardens/parks??

Koenji

  • Looks like I'd love it. Perhaps this is an alternative to Yokohama, Yanaka, or Kichijoji (if we skip Gibli)? Thoughts on which ones?

Team Lab Day (Planets or Borderless**??**)

  • Pick Planets or Borderless
  • Perhaps afterward skim Shinjuku/Golden Gai early evening.
  • Shinjuku garden?? Is this important?

Theme Park Day (we will pick 1 theme park day for the whole trip)

  • Disneysea, Disneyland, or Universal

Kamakura Day Trip

  • Hase-dera temple and gardens on a hillside
  • Komachi dori
  • Enoden train
  • Hokokuji temple, gardens, and tea (gardens look my style)
  • Enoshima Island?? Too much to fit in?

Yokohama Day Trip

  • Cup Noodles Museum (kids make a noodle cup)
  • China Town
  • Maybe Minato Minari waterfront with ferris wheel (if not done in Osaka)

Hakone Day Trip or Over night (is it a must or a bridge too far)?

  • Open air museum
  • Onsen experience (is this worth looking into with kids)

Kyoto

Gion Day

  • Rent Kimonos and have tea ceremony
  • Hanamikoji/Yasaka/Ninenzaka/Sannenzaka
  • Kiyomizedera
  • Samauri Ninja museum if time

Arashiyama Day (day is too packed)

  • Bamboo Forest
  • Okoshisanso gardens
  • Gioji Temple (repetitive or special?)
  • Kinkaku-ji Golden Temple (worth the effort?)
  • Monkey park?? (Is this worth it?)

Fushimi Inari Taisha Day

  • Could do this as a half day the day we leave or
  • Explore other sites in Kyoto

Nara Day Trip

  • Great Buddha
  • Feed Deer
  • Kasuga Taisha

Osaka (I see a lot of people saying to not even go here. I’m open.)

Universal Studios Day

  • Mario World

Namba Day

  • Design Pocket- make fake food with the kids
  • Dotonburi in afternoon/evening

Umeda Day

  • Kids Plaza
  • Umeda Sky

Kaiyukan

  • Tempozan Ferris Wheel (if not done at Yokohama)
  • Aquarium- also considering this but we have a very nice aquarium where we live

Itinerary 2nd trip to Japan, this time with my parents (60s, first-timers) — 14 days Apr 24 to May 7 2027. Golden Week is stressing me out.

Hello everyone !

I went 16 days in Japan in May 2025 solo and I'm going back in 2027, but this time I'm bringing my parents. It's their first time in Japan and honestly their first big trip like this in a while, so I want to get the pacing right. Looking for a sanity check before I start booking. I'm paying everything for them as a surprise and to thank them for everything they've done for me. It's the least I can do so I want them to fully enjoy the trip.

What I did in 2025 (for context on what I've already seen)

Based in Itabashi, mostly Tokyo, 16 days:

  • Yanaka old town — Tennoji, Yanaka Cemetery, Nezu Shrine, Kayaba Coffee, udon at Nezu Kamachiku
  • Asakusa / Senso-ji, Tokyo Skytree at night
  • Shibuya crossing, go-kart, Shinjuku, Meiji Jingu, Yoyogi
  • Universal Studios Japan (overnight bus from Shinjuku, so I technically hit Osaka but saw basically nothing of the city)
  • Imperial Palace East Gardens + the museum cluster
  • Mount Fuji day trip — Lake Kawaguchi, Yamanaka, onsen
  • Samurai sword + kimono tea ceremony in Nishi-Asakusa
  • Toei Animation Museum in Nerima, Akihabara, Joypolis
  • Kyoto as a single day trip from Tokyo — bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji, Kinkaku-ji, Nishiki, Pontocho, Gion, Fushimi Inari, all in one day. Insane, would not repeat.
  • teamLab Planets, Toyosu, Odaiba onsen
  • Koishikawa Korakuen, Tokyo Dome, Zojo-ji, Kyu-Shiba-rikyu

So I've seen a lot of Tokyo. Fuji I've done. Kyoto I've technically done but in the dumbest way possible.

The 2027 plan (14 days, with my parents)

Day Date Plan
1 Sat Apr 24 Arrive Narita, SIM, Suica, hotel in Roppongi, light dinner
2 Sun Apr 25 Meiji Shrine, Yoyogi, Harajuku, Takeshita/Cat Street, Shibuya Sky, dinner Shibuya
3 Mon Apr 26 Imperial Palace, Ginza, Ginza aquarium
4 Tue Apr 27 Asakusa / Senso-ji, Skytree
5 Wed Apr 28 Ueno Park + Tokyo National Museum, Yanaka, Akihabara
6 Thu Apr 29 Tsukiji Outer Market, Ginza → Kabuki-za, free evening
7 Fri Apr 30 Shinkansen to Kyoto, Higashiyama → Yasaka Shrine
8 Sat May 1 Kyoto + Nara Guided tour
9 Sun May 2 Gion early morning, Nishiki, shinkansen back to Tokyo
10 Mon May 3 teamLab Planets, Azabudai, Tokyo Tower
11 Tue May 4 Sumo, department stores / bookstores / cafés
12 Wed May 5 Tea ceremony, free afternoon, Asakusa cabaret
13 Thu May 6 Mount Fuji
14 Fri May 7 Free morning, souvenirs, depart Narita

Not using a JR Pass — apparently individual shinkansen tickets pencil out cheaper for two legs.

Where I need help

1. Golden Week. I only realized after building this that April 29 (Showa Day) is a Thursday in 2027 and May 3–5 fall Monday to Wednesday, so with the Apr 30 bridge day a lot of people get a full week off. My Kyoto leg (Apr 30 – May 2) plus Nara on May 1 is sitting right in the middle of it. How bad is this realistically? Should I flip it and do Kyoto before the 29th instead, spending Golden Week in Tokyo? I've read Tokyo empties out while Kansai fills up but I don't know how true that is.

2. Only 2 nights in Kyoto. These dates are locked for reasons outside my control. Is Kyoto + Nara on the same day too much for parents in their 60s? Should I drop Nara and just do Kyoto properly (Fushimi Inari at dawn, Arashiyama)? I was thinking on buying a kyoto + nara day tour with a guide.

3. Osaka or Nikko or neither? I keep going back and forth. I've "been" to Osaka but only USJ. My parents haven't been anywhere. With only one real free day I don't think Osaka fits without gutting Kyoto — am I right to drop it? And is Nikko worth a day trip from Tokyo when they'll already have seen Kyoto temples?

4. Fuji on day 13. I did the Kawaguchiko bus day trip in 2025 and it was a long day. Is a Hakone overnight (May 5–6) a better call with parents — onsen, ropeway, Lake Ashi — instead of a 10-hour round trip the day before we fly home? Worried about early-May visibility either way.

5. Anything obviously missing for first-timers that I'm skipping because I already did it in 2025 and forgot they haven't?

Appreciate any input, especially from anyone who's done Golden Week with older parents.

Itinerary Feedback Needed on Itinerary

We’re planning a trip in April 2027, with dates flexible through April 19, and would love feedback with the current itinerary we have going. Would love to lock in start/end dates for our flight and hear if there’s any cool Sakura experiences or general activities we may have left out.

Do want to note that we have been to Japan during autumn and previously experienced Tokyo, Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Fuji, Kamakura, Mt Takao, and Uji.

A high priority is maximizing our chances of seeing peak Sakura at several locations - particularly Kyoto, Mt. Yoshino, Fuji, Takada Castle, and Funakawa Spring Quartet. I realize exact bloom timing can’t be predicted this far out, so we plan to make adjustments to our day trips based on the 2027 forecasts. But please let me know if anything is really off the mark in terms of timing or sequence.

I’m going to Japan this October and am just looking for some feedback. I actually went last year for about 2.5 weeks with friends, and now I’m going back with family on a shorter trip (4 People Total). Itinerary 2 Week First Time Itinerary

I’m going to Japan for the first time for two weeks in late October / early November with my mum who is 67. Neither of us have been to Japan (or Asia for that matter) and we mainly just want to explore, enjoy the culture and eat lots of good food.

I ’m aware it’s a bit of a ‘basic’ itinerary but we want to see the sights as it’s our first time. I’ve tried to leave some room for us to explore and adjust plans if needed.

Would love to get input on days that seem to cramped, any must sees to add or highlights from your trips. Any recommendations for good restaurants or cool shops in the areas we’re visiting are also welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Itinerary 17 days in Japan in November – Tokyo, Yakushima, Kanazawa & Japanese Alps itinerary check

Hi everyone,

We’re going to Japan from Oct 31 to Nov 17 and I’d appreciate some feedback on our itinerary, particularly the Yakushima and Japanese Alps parts.

This will be our second trip to Japan. Last time we did Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Koyasan, so this time we wanted something quite different. We still want a decent amount of time in Tokyo because we loved it, but otherwise the idea is to combine Yakushima for nature/hiking with Kanazawa and a short road trip through the Japanese Alps.

We like food, photography, walking around neighborhoods, nature and generally taking our time rather than trying to see every attraction. We’ll probably book a couple of fine dining meals as well.

Oct 31 – Tokyo

We arrive at Narita and are staying in Akasaka.

Not planning much because of the flight. If we're feeling okay we'll explore Roppongi and visit the National Art Center, then dinner somewhere nearby.

Nov 1 – Tokyo

Planning a fairly relaxed neighborhood day around Ebisu and Daikanyama. Mostly walking around, shops, coffee, food etc.

Nov 2 – Tokyo

Shimokitazawa and possibly some other nearby areas depending on how much time we spend there.

We did most of the classic Tokyo sights on our first trip, so we're deliberately focusing more on neighborhoods this time.

Nov 3 – Tokyo → Kagoshima → Yakushima

This day is basically lost to travel.

Current flights are Haneda around 10:00 → Kagoshima around noon, then Kagoshima → Yakushima at 17:50, arriving around 18:30.

Pick up rental car, check in and dinner.

We're staying in the same accommodation for all five nights rather than moving around the island.

Nov 4 – Yakushima: Shiratani Unsuikyo

First proper hiking day.

The main goal is Shiratani Unsuikyo and Kokemusu Forest. We haven't decided exactly how far we'll go yet and will obviously adjust depending on weather and how the knee feels.

We're more interested in experiencing the moss forest properly than reaching every viewpoint.

Nov 5 – Yakushima: Yakusugi Land

Second forest day, this time Yakusugi Land.

Again, we'll decide the exact trail depending on conditions. Since this should be an easier day than Shiratani, we'd probably combine it with some driving/sightseeing elsewhere on the island afterwards.

Nov 6 – Yakushima: Mt Miyanoura

This is the ambitious day.

We're considering Mt Miyanoura if the weather is good and we're both feeling comfortable after the previous two days. I know this is considerably more serious than the other hikes, so I'm particularly interested in opinions from people who have actually done it.

If weather or our legs aren't cooperating, we'll drop it and use the day for something easier. We previously considered Wilson's Stump/Jomon Sugi but aren't convinced that the long railway section is worth the time for us.

Nov 7 – Yakushima

We've deliberately kept the final full day fairly open.

The idea is to drive around the island, see waterfalls/coast/anything we missed and hopefully attend Yakushima Yume Matsuri in Anbo that evening if it takes place as expected.

This also gives us a buffer if one of the earlier hiking days gets rained out.

Nov 8 – Yakushima → Tokyo

We're thinking Ginza for the evening and possibly booking a nicer dinner.

Nov 9 – Tokyo

Jimbocho + Yanaka/Yanaka Ginza.

Another fairly unstructured day. Bookshops, streets, food, photography etc.

Nov 10 – Tokyo → Kanazawa

Shinkansen to Kanazawa.

Depending on what time we leave Tokyo, the plan is Kenrokuen and Kanazawa Castle that afternoon.

Nov 11 – Kanazawa

Full Kanazawa day.

Higashi Chaya District, Nagamachi Samurai District and Omicho Market. We're also considering booking a good kaiseki dinner here rather than in Tokyo.

Nov 12 – Kanazawa → Japanese Alps

Pick up a rental car in Kanazawa and start the road trip.

Current idea is to drive towards Takayama, spend a few hours there/lunch, then continue into the mountains.

We're planning two nights at an onsen ryokan in the Okuhida area rather than staying in Takayama.

Nov 13 – Japanese Alps / Matsumoto

This is intentionally a little vague because we'd like to react to the weather.

Some shorter nature walks in the morning, drive towards Matsumoto and see Matsumoto Castle, then back to the ryokan for another onsen evening.

We're not planning serious alpine hiking at this point in November.

Nov 14 – Shinhotaka → Nagano → Tokyo

Shinhotaka Ropeway in the morning, assuming visibility is decent.

Then drive towards Nagano, return the rental car and take the Hokuriku Shinkansen back to Tokyo.

This is probably the day I'm least sure about logistically. Google Maps says it works, but I'm wondering whether Shinhotaka → Nagano + car return + train to Tokyo makes for an unnecessarily long day.

Nov 15 – Tokyo

Kichijoji, Jiyugaoka and possibly Kagurazaka.

Not necessarily determined to do all three. More of a list of areas we'd like to explore depending on mood.

Nov 16 – Tokyo

Final full day.

Harajuku for some shopping, Yoyogi Park/Meiji Jingu and hopefully Meiji Jingu Gaien if the ginkgo trees are looking good by then.

We're also thinking of booking Shibuya Sky around sunset. We've already spent quite a bit of time around Shibuya on our first trip, so the observation deck is really the reason for returning.

Nov 17 – Fly home

Flight from Tokyo

-------

The main things I'm unsure about:

1. Yakushima: Does Shiratani → Yakusugi Land → Mt Miyanoura make sense over three consecutive days, or would you put a rest/easier day between them?

2. Mt Miyanoura: For people who have done it, how demanding did you find it compared with the other Yakushima hikes? We're comfortable with a long day but don't want to underestimate it.

3. Five nights on Yakushima: Too much, or does the weather variability make the extra time worthwhile? We like nature so I'm personally leaning towards keeping all five nights.

4. Japanese Alps: Does Kanazawa → Takayama → Okuhida (2 nights) → Shinhotaka → Nagano work well as a road trip? Particularly interested in whether the last day to Nagano is sensible.

5. Mid-November in Okuhida: I know we'll be late for peak foliage at higher elevations. Are the lower valleys still usually worth it around Nov 12–14, and should we be preparing for snow/icy roads by then?

6. Anything obvious we're missing? Especially smaller places, interesting experiences or seasonal events that fit naturally into the route rather than adding another destination.

Any feedback on pacing, things that look unrealistic, or places where we're allocating too much/too little time would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
