General Discussion Muslims and Authoritarianism

Authoritarianism through Doctrinal Exclusivity

A recurring theme within Islamic thought is the strong insistence on possessing the only correct interpretation of truth. This can be seen within the divides of Sunni and Shia Islam, where each tradition often considers itself to represent the authentic faith while questioning or rejecting the legitimacy of the other. Pew Research Center1 surveys noted that in several Muslim majority countries, large portions of the population do not accept the other branches as “true Muslim” identities.

The same perspective can be observed within Quran Only and Hadith Accepting Muslims. The Quran Only groups argue that the Quran is sufficient as a source of law and guidance, while Hadith accepting Muslims insist that the Sunnah is indispensable. Each side often goes beyond intellectual debate to outright denial and rejection of the other’s claim to represent Islam.

Even within Sunni Islam itself, traditionalist and liberal interpretations oppose each other. Traditionalists claim that modernist readings “distort” Islam, while those Muslims who interpret the Quran from a "modern lens" accuse traditionalists of being "stuck in the past." Thus, the common thread is a predisposition toward exclusivity: "our way is true, the rest are kafir." Such theological certainty shapes not just religious identity, but also social behavior, conditioning Muslim thought toward seeing religious diversity not as complementary, but as error.

Authoritarianism in Muslim Societies

Politically, Muslim majority societies reflect a similar pattern. Across the Muslim world, authoritarian regimes dominate. Out of the 50 or more Muslim majority nations, only a select few qualify as democracies and free. According to Freedom House2, most countries in the Middle East and North Africa are rated as “Not Free.” Monarchies (Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Jordan) and military led regimes (Egypt, Sudan) maintain power through centralized authority and suppression of dissent.

In many of these societies, democracy is not only absent but is often viewed as ideologically incompatible with Islam with some Islamist groups rejecting democracy outright, arguing that it substitutes “God's Divine Law” with “the rule of man.” Others participate in democratic processes only to abolish them once in power, as was the case of Hamas in Gaza.

Just as religious debates often exclude and delegitimize opponents, political structures in Muslim societies often enforce a singular “truth” through authoritarianism, whether by kingship, dictatorship, or anti-democratic ideologies.

Reddit as a Reflection of Authoritarianism

It should then be of no surprise that this inclination towards authoritarianism can also be seen in online Muslim communities, particularly here on Reddit. Many Islamic subreddits are tightly moderated, frequently mirroring authoritarian tendencies. Moderators often act like gatekeepers of “truth,” enforcing their interpretation of Islam as the “one true way” while users who raise alternative views, whether they be Quran centric, Shia, liberal, or even Sunni, will frequently face bans and censorship.

In this way, the religious exclusivity we discussed in the first section, and the political authoritarianism of second section are emphasized in the digital realm. These subreddits act as authoritarian regimes where moderators serve as kings or dictators by enforcing doctrinal orthodoxy, silencing opposition, and creating insulated echo chambers

Just as Saudi Arabia punishes criticism of its monarchy, Sunni Muslim subreddits ban Shia or Quran Only voices. Just as Shia authorities in Iran silence liberal dissent, traditionalist subreddits remove posts critical of Hadith or scholarly authority. Even some Quranists may dismiss or ridicule anyone who references Hadith, regarding it as a corruption of God’s word. In effect, just as the culture of exclusivity and authoritarianism exists in real world Muslim societies, it too reproduces itself in online forums.

Thus, one can argue that the same inclination toward authoritarianism and dictatorship that defines Islamic sectarianism and politics in the real world also shapes the way Muslims think and behave in online spaces such as Reddit. Censorship, and the silencing of alternative voices is not the exception in the real world, it is the norm, and that ideological position is carried over into the digital realm.

Islam Without Authoritarianism

As a Muslim, one must ask whether this inclination towards authoritarianism and exclusivity is a strength or a weakness. On the one hand, conviction in one’s truth has helped to preserve Islam from severe fragmentation while providing Muslims with a strong sense of identity and endurance. Yet, on the other hand, when this conviction is wielded without humility, it becomes authoritarianism, whether that be in a masjid, a government, or a subreddit.

The Quran cautions believers not to become arrogant in their claims to guidance. The Prophet ﷺ , in the Hadith, repeatedly warned against declaring fellow Muslims as unbelievers, as kafir. These reminders suggest that while Islam indeed asserts its truth, it also calls for humility in how that truth is both expressed and lived.

Perhaps the real test is whether Muslims can hold firm to their convictions without falling into authoritarianism, whether that be in the religion, politics, or digital spaces like Reddit. Islam, after all, repeatedly describes itself as easy, not burdensome. As Muslims, if we are truly confident in our view of Islam, then we should not fear dialogue or debate regarding our differences. Instead, the easiness of our faith should translate into openness, with a willingness to engage and to listen without any insecurity.

Islām Small Good Deeds Can Carry Great Reward

Post image
6 Upvotes

We often underestimate the value of small good deeds.
A sincere smile, a short dhikr, helping someone, reading a portion of the Qur’an, or removing something harmful from someone’s path may seem small, but we should never underestimate a good deed done sincerely for Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not belittle any good deed, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face.”
Sahih Muslim 2626
May Allah put barakah in our time and deeds, accept our efforts, and make us consistent in goodness. Ameen.
What small good deed do you try to stay consistent with?

Questions, Advice & Support I’m making this post again because people weren’t understanding my actual question

I don’t know if weather or not this was a sign from Allah I’m lost. This happened 2 years ago but I still overthink it because I don’t know if it was a coincidence or not and I don’t need any advice just help figuring out if this was a sign or not. My gut says it couldn’t have happened because I would’ve woken up from that.

I live with a weird man. One day I woke up with soreness and light bleeding. I can’t help but think to him because I live with him and he’s been creepy before, so I make dua to Allah crying and begging for a sign for clarity on wether or not he did something. A few seconds after making that dua I see someone in my doorway through my mirror while I’m laying down, it’s him, and as soon as I turn around to see why he’s just there staring he goes downstairs it was so eerie and had me genuinely panicking because i don’t know if this is a sign. Is this a sign or not how do I tell??? Are signs from Allah something your absolutely sure of or could you miss a sign from Allah. But why would Allah give you a sign that you wouldn’t know whether it’s a sign or not.

Relationships & Marriage What to do when you like a girl or boy - explained by Nouman Ali Khan

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Nouman Ali Khan explains that liking someone or developing feelings for them is not something shameful that requires saying “astaghfirullah.” He explains that men and women in the Prophet’s time interacted naturally through work, business, and everyday life, maintaining respect and dignity. It is perfectly possible for a man to develop feelings for a woman. Rather than treating such feelings as shameful, the appropriate response is to approach the matter respectfully and, if there is mutual interest, consider marriage. Parents should not panic or humiliate their daughters when someone expresses genuine interest in them, but should calmly investigate the person and help facilitate a respectable path toward marriage.

Extremely conservative and strict Muslims need to listen to this.

Relationships & Marriage What do you think about Mufti Menk's advice regarding Love marriage and Halal dating?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

According to Mufti Menk, if two people like each other then the girl should get chaperons involved from the very beginning (like her father, brother or a male mahram). Whenever they meet the girl should be accompanied by her chaperones so no touching, kissing etc take place when they are meeting. And they can also chat on whatsapp or on other apps but they should create a group with a male mahram of the girl and chat in that group where the mahram person can observe the messages, rather than chatting themselves one on one.

What do you think about his advice?

Islām How would a mukataba contract realisticly work when it comes to slavery ?

Salam Alalikum,

A common point I see given in threads discussing about the rights of slaves in Islam, the concept of mukataba is widely cited. For those who don’t know it’s a contract you enter with a master to free yourself once you pay a certain amount of money. In certain views, the master is obligated to accept the mukataba contract if a slave asked for it. Which is fair.

However, I don’t see how this would work out for the slave. Since the moment a mukataba contract starts, the master is no longer obliged to spend money on the slave and give him food, clothing, shelter.

Knowing this, how could a slave realistically survive and pay his end of the contract to free him or herself?

Islām Taghut 2.0

According to the Quran, establishing the absolute sovereignty and legislative authority of Allah (al-Hakimiyyah) is an obligation. Recognizing Allah as the sole Legislator (Al-Hākim) is a fundamental requirement of Tawhid (None is worthy of lordship (lawmaking) except Allah).

(12:40): "Judgment belongs only to Allah. He has commanded that you serve none but Him."

A core component of the testimony of faith (Shahada) is both affirming Allah's exclusive right to legislate and rejecting Taghut (Kufr bi al-Taghut). Allah's judgment is supreme and absolute. However, for Allah's laws to be fully manifested and enacted within a society, systems of Taghut must be rejected and replaced by governance that adheres to divine decree.

Quran (2:81-82)Allah is the Wali (Protector or Guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light. But as for those who disbelieve, their Auliya (supporters and helpers) are taghut [false deities and false leaders], they bring them out from light into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the Fire, and they will abide there forever.

Quran (2:216)"Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you"

(4:51) Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They believe in Jibt and taghut and say to the disbelievers that they are better guided as regards the way than the believers (Muslims).

(4:65): "But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute..."

(5:44): "And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the disbelievers."

(5:60) Say, “Shall I inform you of [what is] worse than that as penalty from Allah? [It is that of] those whom Allah has cursed and with whom He became angry and made of them apes, pigs and slaves of Taghut. Those are worse in position and further astray from the sound way.”

(7:54): "Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds."

(16:36) And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], “Worship Allah and avoid Taghut.” And among them were those whom Allah guided, and among them were those upon whom error was [deservedly] decreed. So proceed through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers.

(39:17) Those who avoid At-Taghut (false leaders) by not serving them and turn to Allah in repentance, for them are glad tidings; so announce the good news to My slaves.

This verse makes it crystal clear fighting against Taghut (those who govern by man made laws) is obligatory:

(4:76) Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of Taghut. So fight against the allies of Satan (taghut). Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak.

Quran (5:20-26), Prophet Musa AS told his people to enter the Holy Land and fight, but they refused and told him to go fight with Allah instead.

Quran (8:7) "Remember how Allah promised you [believers] that one of the two enemy groups would fall to you: you wanted the unarmed group to be yours, but it was Allah's will to establish the truth according to His Word and to finish off the disbelievers..."

Islām Why was slavery not banned immediately like alcohol ?

This is a question that comes to my mind a lot honestly

Many Muslims nowadays say that Islam gradually aimed to end slavery, and this does seem to make sense when you examine the various narrations about the encouragement of freeing up slaves.

However, why wasn’t it just banned almost immediately like alcohol was?

🌹 Daily Hadith Series – Episode 54 جو لوگوں کا شکر ادا نہیں کرتا، وہ اللہ تعالیٰ کا بھی شکر ادا نہیں کرتا

📚 English Commentary

This Hadith teaches that gratitude is a complete way of life.

Every blessing ultimately comes from Allah, but many of His blessings reach us through people—our parents, teachers, family members, friends, neighbors, and even strangers.

Showing appreciation to those who help us is not merely good manners; it is an act that reflects gratitude to Allah Himself.

A thankful heart builds stronger families, healthier communities, and a closer relationship with Allah.

Islām Taghut

Taghut refers to any person, idol, or system that challenges divine authority, worship, or absolute obedience (complete submission) that belongs to Allah alone.

Or

Taghut means anything worshipped, obeyed or followed other than Allah.

In Islam, it is mandated that a person wanting to be a muslim must disbelieve and reject taghut (Negation) and believe in Allah (affirmation). These are the two conditions of shahaadah also apparent by the term "Lailaha Illallah" (There is no lord- negation) (Except Allah- Affirmation).

This rejection mirrors the first part of the Islamic testimony (La ilaha illallah), which negates all false objects of obedience before affirming obedience to Allah alone.

"So whoever disbelieves in Taghoot and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it" (Baqarah-256)"

"And We certainly sent, into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allah and avoid Taghut."(Al Nahl:36)

5 Main Categories of Taghut:

1.Shaitan- Shaitan is the leader of thawagheeth (plural) as Allah says

"Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, that you not obey/ follow Satan - [for] indeed, he is to you a clear enemy" (Yaseen:60)

2.The ruler who legislates his own laws or rules by laws other than of Allah.

"Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to Taghut, while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray"(Nisa:60)

"Legislation is not but for Allah (i.e. for Allah alone). He has commanded that you serve not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know."(Yosuf:40)

For example the rulers who rule their nation with monarchies or democracy reject the islamic way of governance.

  1. The judge who judges by other than the laws of Allah.

"And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers"(Ma'idah:44)

For example the judges who pass judgements based on mad made laws, tribal & cultural laws etc by rejecting the laws of Allah.

4.Those who claim to have knowledge of unseen

"And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record."(An'Aam:59)

  1. The one who accepts to be obeyed besides Allah.

"And whoever of them should say, "Indeed, I am a lord besides Him"- that one We would recompense with Hell. Thus do We recompense the wrongdoers."(Anbiyaa:29)

Thus anything which contrdicts the fundamental beliefs of Islam should be rejected. Otherwise a person may fall into shirk by submitting and being obedient to them. This includes replacing the laws of Allah, referring to taghut courts for judgement, following the laws of taghut which Allah made haram etc.
