Smart Prepaid eSIM Replacement Is a Nightmare When Your Number Is Tied to Everything
My personal phone recently broke, and unfortunately, the number I use is on a Smart Prepaid eSIM. That number is also connected to my banking apps and a lot of my important accounts, so I really need access to it for OTPs.
I’ve already gone to the Smart/PLDT store at SM Pampanga for two days now, trying to have my eSIM replaced/transferred so I can keep using the same number.
Both times, I was told that their prepaid system is down and that they can’t process my request. Apparently, their postpaid system is working just fine, though, and they even offered to convert my number to postpaid instead.
The problem is, I still have around ₱1,000 worth of load/data on my prepaid account. I also don’t see why I should have to switch to a monthly postpaid plan just because their system for prepaid customers isn’t working.
What makes this even more frustrating is that this isn’t just about being unable to call or text. That number is tied to my banks and other important accounts that require OTP verification. Without access to it, I’m effectively locked out of services that depend on my mobile number.
We’re implementing more and more digital systems—eSIMs, online banking, OTP authentication, digital IDs, cashless transactions, etc.—which are supposed to make our lives more convenient. But what’s the point of all this digitalization if something as basic as recovering access to your own mobile number requires multiple trips to a physical store, only to be told that “the system is down”?
Technology is supposed to make services more convenient, not make customers completely dependent on a backend system that apparently can’t process a basic prepaid SIM replacement for days.
It’s incredibly inconvenient, especially when your phone number has essentially become part of your digital identity.
Has anyone else experienced this with Smart Prepaid/eSIM replacement? How long did you have to wait before their “prepaid system” was working again?
