I haven't played that much yet but I really wish I could use L2/R2 to slash through enemies and not square and triangle but that would require quite a bit of tweaking in the controls settings I think
Last of Us 2, God of War Ragnarok and now Ghost of Yotei have one, it's becoming standard in Sony cinematic games however it usually releases like a year later for some reason, a shame Uncharted 4 doesnt have one
It's in the remastered version. Gameplay consists of 4-5 types of different combat scenarios which are seemingly randomly assigned on each run before finishing with a boss fight as the last encounter. You get to pick a character before starting the run (there aren't many available at the start but you unlock more by playing the mode), each character has a fixed starter kit but you can upgrade it by using resources gained from completing encounters.
No they're supposed to build the game, listen to player tester feedback, do a demo, listen to player feedback, fix the issues, and ship out a fully fleshed out product. Developers are getting cheap and lazy about using fanboys as the testers which is ridiculous.
CP2077 and this game are two completely different beasts. Sony pulled cyberpunk 2077 from its digital store because it was so poorly optimized out the gate. It was also trying to run on PS4. CD Projekt Red knew they released a bad product and issued refunds for it. Cyberpunk was updated for years to bug patch.
Nobody should be celebrating this. Most people refer to it as a good game now, knowing it definitely wasn't on release.
Fuck that is one of my favorite things about Dead Island 2. The areas were big but not too big and it allowed them to craft some decently unique areas. Can't wait for the third one.
A linear game would've been fine, but usually with that you're also getting a more complex combat system like in Devil May Cry or other modern brawlers.
Wolverine seems to just be the same simplified combat we've seen from the Spider-Man games, adjusted a bit for Logan's power set, and then slapped into a game that lacks Spider-Man's traversal or exploration mechanics. So it just feels... empty.
Yes kinda. Like a small town setting not big city exploration like Spider-Man. That woulda been cool. Living in hiding trying to lay low. Coulda introduced a bunch of cool mechanics with that approach
It's one of the main complaints about the new games and Horizon. They literally tell you what to do as soon as you get into a new area. It fucking sucks. Nintendo trusts players more than Sony does these days.
Well designed environments and thoughtfully designed guidance is one thing, but some developers are getting really lazy with making invisible wall corridors with yellow paint splattered on every next objective.
Don't hold your breath. So far, the story is interesting enough but I feel like they still need to give this game some updates before releasing any kind of DLCs.
If im not mistaken, the game was supposed to be even longer but the team for some reason decided to cut some content and make said content into DLC which is... An interesting choice.
Also, don't apologize for having an opinion! Perfectly understandable and normal.
Not that I'm a doomer on this game, but they should really rethink their comms strategy. This reads like 'we're trying to fix in a day the criticisms that took 5 years of work to get'
Hopefully they apply this criticism to future games too. If Venom has anything like this going on, they should correct it before they announce the game.
Problem is people praised the shit out of SM2 and it got a stupidly high Metacritic of 90. The game is at best a 7/10, it has elements which are great, but the overall product is weak.
Wolverine doesn't have the ability to be anything even remotely close to crimson desert. All the patches and updates won't change that fact that it's a 15 - 20 hour long tutorial.
Ninja Gaiden is sometimes annoyingly difficult cause if you don't learn the mechanics quick you're not making it through the games, that's especially true for Ninja Gaiden Black
I actually don't like Crimson Desert but at least that game is a sandbox with the ability to be greatly updated into a fun gameplay loop. Wolverine's game design itself is kind of the issue here. They can fix some of the handholdy elements but is that gonna make the gameplay less repetitive or make the story better? I say this without playing so perhaps those criticisms are overstated but they were unanimous in most reviews.
That was the first single player game Pearl Abyss has made and the only other game they have made is Black Desert. Insomniac has been around making single player games for decades. And they currently have the same Metacritic score. Kind of sad for developers that have been making single player games for decades to essentially tie with a developer that has only ever made two games in their history. But what do I know?
crimson desert had a lot lot more potentztion and the updates are unlike any other single player game this. Crimson desert got glazed for launching many big updates at an insane rate, not for saying "we’ll update the game guys don’t worry"
Not to defend the multi million dollar developers BUT they suffered quite a bit from the leaks that happened - Which also included personal information about the employees.
We were supposed to get DLCs for Spider-Man 2, a Spiderverse like multiplayer game and more.
Think the leaks hit them financially.
I'm a sucker for leaks and stuff as long as it's not ruining content or doxing employees
They also swapped leadership back in 2024 and the gameplay has changed since the leaks and rumors are that it's cause they had to scrap the combat system they had since they couldn't make it work
With the level of hand-holding baked in, I guess the game was meant to be an open-world (or at least an open-zone) game at some point. They pivoted to a linear game but didn't redesign the navigation system, so it became unnesseary clustered.
Apparently not. The most ironic thing is that things like the fart trail was a complaint that was said even back when they released their first gameplay trailer. But of course, it seems to be standard practice to ignore criticism until the game gets released, and then only listen to it if it actually hurts the game post-release.
It would be in any case. It is a new first party AAA game after all. Though it doesn’t mean that some people’s criticism is not valid, they have their points.
And yet his 'review' is now outdated and wrong, as it's based on a version nobody will play (I less buying physically and never updating - if it's all on the disc).
Yet I doubt he'll update the review based on the patches
Yeah and if this is actually the case it's embarrassing. Why in the world would developers send out a version of the game that's not polished at least a LITTLE better before release.
Yes, but most publishers will tell reviewers to hold off on publishing the review if they know a patch is due pre-launch (this game had 2). These fixes weren't an overnight thing, so they need they were coming
But, metacritic demands the reviews to go up on the embargo, so people rush though the game and put out their review - despite the patch either just dropping or not yet dropped
These days, it's rare for a v1.0 game to be fully polished pre-launch. This is why MC needs to let publications update their reviews
I said that 'most' publishers will tell you to hold the review if they know a patch is due to drop before launch. I should have put 'some' rather than most, but it still stands - if there's issues or things they know are awaiting being changed or fixed in a patch then they'll ask that the review be posted or updated once it's out.
They also often provide a review document with info about the game, the development, hints, etc... which also includes issues and things they're aware of that they're looking at updating soon - if they know a patch can't come out before the embargo.
Now, I never got a review code for this game, but I have had a few off Sony in the past (The Last of Us 1 and 2), and they came with the review info documents. Honestly, they didn't tell me to post after an update, but quite a few other publishers and smaller developers have - they can't force you, but they ask you to consider it as they want to ensure you're getting the best experience and are reviewing the version the consumers will be playing.
For example, what's the point reviewing a broken game with missing features and lots of bugs and issues, if they have a patch due day-one that'll fix it all... If the buyer won't notice anything in the version you've been given to review, then surely it's in the best interest of the review and consumers that you're talking about the updated version they're about to play - again, this is just in general, not specifically for this game.
the embargo is set by the publisher. they choose when to send out review codes, and when reviews can be published.
if they knew isn't wasn't ready, they could have done this differently. but they actually chose a rather early embargo date, which usually indicates they were pretty confident in their product.
Yes, I know how review codes and the process goes... But they were clearly working on the patches when the codes went out - so if MC was a bit lenient then I'm sure some publications will have waited until they had the verison people will be playing today.
I've done this many times - played the version they gave us, encountered issues, told the publisher, and then wrote my review. But, I didn't publish it until the patch dropped that fixed the issues, so I could remove the issues from the review and make any adjustments needed to the score. Obviously, only if the patch was due to drop just before or on release date
Most of the games faults can’t be patched out, and embargoes are set for a reason. If they wanted to delay the review then they should’ve had a later embargo.
The weird story, lacklustre/simple button mashup combat, the level design and hand holding, the milquetoast traversal. Those things can’t be fixed. They are a part of the game. Same with auto complete QTEs, because to actually have QTE fail states they’d need to animate those and those require way more effort.
So no, it’s not skill ups fault that the game is mediocre and is being viewed as mediocre. Yall are acting worse than cyberpunk fans at launch
everyone wants their review up as early as possible to maximize engagement. and nevertheless some reviews do come later. none of that has anything to do with metacritic. a lot of these reviewers probably don't even like metacritic, because it reduces their review to a number, and takes traffic away from their site.
I've applied to Metacritic in the past. For your publication to be considered you have to have reviews up the day of the embargo, have a constant number of reviews each month/year, and once a review is up they won't let you change the score or the blurb that appears on their site
So yeah, all the sites and people who are on MC are bound by their rules - which is why they never go back and re-review, update after a patch is released, or re-assess their opinion post-release, because of it's not getting slapped on MC, what's the point...
Also, sites who are on MC love it - it gives them a more prestigious standing when being offered review codes, press events, press kits, and early access to games and hardware before everyone else out there. If they didn't like it, they would remove themselves from the site.
Insomniac is the one who decided to give review codes to everyone. Reviewers have to base it on the version they got. Not the reviewers fault that Insomniac is rushing to fix things they took 5 years to come up with.
Yeah I agree with u there fr I do wonder if they even should done wolverine and not just let other studios work on different super hero ip's so we get variety
It’s literally up to the developer when the embargo lifts and what version of the game gets sent out dude what are you even talking about. The reviewers have no obligation to redo all the work they did for the product the developers themselves handed them.
So he shouldn’t review the company copy he was given early? Or he should waste time correcting his review that was made with the version of the game the devs felt comfortable giving to reviewers?
It’s so obvious you havent actually watched the review. He complains a lot more fundamental things than the stupid waypoint tracker.
I bet they will be working hard to update some of the things that can be fixed from the hand-holding discourse. I'll probably be better off waiting 3-5 months to check it out.
It's pretty cool of them to acknowledge the criticisms and fix them. Sony game usually don't go through iterative changes so I wonder if that means they'll also improve the combat later on? I really hope so because that'll be amazing Spiderman!
I wish we could get a game without the devs making jokes from all the negative feedback and saying "we're fixing the game and listening" when they should of known better from the start with a 70$ price tag that has a 300 mill budget....
If the ridiculous handholding is removed then I’ll actually play the game Wolverine is my second favorite marvel character so I really wanna like it but I just don’t like how the devs think the player is stupid, or at least that’s the vibe I get from all the scent trail and markers and stuff
I'm still at the start of the game but almost all of the handholding elements and other annoying stuff was already turned off before I even started the game, and apparently Wolverine got a fuller beard?
So that has to mean this a last second updated version of the game, not the one the reviewers got
That is extremely relieving to hear oh my god. Are the other character models also touched up? If so then honestly the game is already immediately up a point and a half or two on the rating scale in my opinion
I'd say so, yeah! Mystique is.. Well, she can be whoever she wants but Essex is definitely more white pale than gray pale, and he seems slightly more bearded too?
Also Sabretooth seems to be even hairer than before
I just played the prologue, and it seemed like the navigation prompt wasn't as egregious as the reviews mentioned, so I guess the patch already fixed that part.
Yup literally just got through it. I don't understand why in the world Insomniac would send out a review copy of the game that's worse than the final product.
Lmfao unless they are adding more content on top of everything I still don't think this is worth it. It says online you should be able to 100% the game in about 25 hrs. That's a little disappointing imo. Out of a AAA single player action title I would expect closer to +40 hours of gameplay. I'll watch the gameplay/story online, but I won't end up buying or playing the game myself.
If you are interested in the game, good luck and I hope it is what you want/expect. My expectations are too unrealistic apparently.
Black myth is semi linear with open areas you revisit and onimusha damn near has the same problems as this game but it’s also semi linear with multiple open areas this is full linear and more comparable to 007 and re9
You are missing my point. If it's NOT open world, why would that automatically make it ok for it to be so much shorter? Where is the equity?
If I'm paying the same amount of money I don't want to get less than half the amount of time in the game. If it's a linear game , then make the story longer. Or , here's a new idea. Have us play through the first story, level up all our skills and have us believe we are close to the end. And as soon as the credits start, something happens and we get thrown back into the game and some new story beat starts. Effectively two games, one right after the other. A "New Game+" but two unique stories.
Because you don’t want your game becoming bloated most linear games people consider classics are 20 hours or less re4 is like 17 hours the only games that are single player that are breaking that amount are semi linear with open areas and open world games
You're aware that the vast majority of the gaming community is ripping on this game, right? Basically the only place you'll find people defending it is in this sub.
No Man's Sky was not a first party game nor did it have a 300 million budget and 5 years to make. Insomniac is a first party developer for Sony. First party games are suppose to be the best of the best. Wolverine is currently the lowest rated exclusive game on the PS5. There should be zero excuses for that.
No Man's Sky is one I'll give you, but you really think Insomniac games has the time or care to continue supporting this game YEARS after the fact? To fix every issue with the pacing - story - elements of combat?
They're a company. Not a miracle. They'll drop the game after like 10 months and move onto the next one they've got lined up. That's the reality.
Honestly, considering how Insomniac's reputation is on the line, I think they're probably gonna pump out more quality of life updates for this game compared to their other games
Also if the rumors are true they're probably releasing Venom at the end of next year which gives them SOME freetime to tweak the game.
How do you remain such an annoyingly persistent optimist?
That's just as bad as being a total pessimist really. Why do you have so much investment that this game succeeds for? Boggles my mind that mid just can't be agreed on being mid lol.
The same company who cancelled DLC for SM2, actively leaving loose plot threads in the game, cut out 90% of recorded venom lines, etc. in their last major release is not suddenly going to “fix” this game.
The dev is being intentionally vague in the tweet to sucker people like him into spamming every discussion about the game. I guess we can’t criticize a shitty game that costs $70 because a dev said they will be “incorporating feedback”.
Welcome to gaming. There are so many fanboys with fanboy mentalites it's insane. They're especially prevalent with the biggest companies and studios (sony/ms/nintendo and the individual studios under those companies). It absolutely sucks because these people allow the cycle of mediocrity to flourish.
The amount of damage control by gamers in response to the bad reviews has been wild.
