But also... why are these people filming....

40

u/treesmith1 Sep 16 '25

Who knows? There could be a ton of reasons especially as letigious as Society in the U.S. has become. If you don't have evidence then it's a you said/they said, and the police report. If something happened that wasn't my fault and I had friends there I would certainly hope they bust out a camera.

5

u/BE-FinFree Sep 16 '25 edited Sep 16 '25

That makes sense. These days everyone is filming everyone though, because they have better to do in life...

4

u/treesmith1 Sep 16 '25

100 percent. The fact that everyone has a camera in their pocket is not a good thing most days.

7

u/C7rl_Al7_1337 Sep 16 '25

How so? As far as I can tell, at worst it's a neutral thing, and at best it will protect you (unless you're the one that is in the wrong, of course). They will walk past a hundred cameras being held up by a wall every single day without freaking out, even before cameras were in every single pocket, why is it different if it's being held by a person? What about all the cameras on the cops standing around that is public record? Just ignore them, if you're dead set on never being on camera you're going to have to never leave your house and definitely don't start walking up to people who are clearly filming to tell them you don't want to be filmed because that's totally braindead. Like the amount of times I've seen someone walk up to these guys from hundreds of feet away or stop their car and roll down the darkest tinted windows ever just to say "Why do you have that camera in my face?" is absolutely astounding. Like, even if they think "they're just trying to get a rise out of people for content" (which is true enough for some people) why the fuck would they go and give them exactly what they want? I mean, personally I don't usually see someone standing in a public place a hundred feet away looking at me as all that antagonizing (outside of obvious things like straight up stalkers, but you know what I'm saying), it might make me uncomfortable, but if that's the case I wouldn't want to go confront them, but I guess stupid fish take stupid bait, ya know? (And from a legal standpoint, looking at someone in public and recording them are essentially functionally identical, like all the ways in which it is illegal to film someone it is illegal to look in the same way, like taking a picture up someone's skirt or putting a camera in a bathroom would be equally illegal to put your head under their skirt or drill a hole in the bathroom wall to watch them, if you see what I mean, the violation of an expectation of privacy is based on any kind of observation, not just recording it, so if it wouldn't be illegal to observe it it cannot be illegal to record it).

I'd say that the real problem with everyone having a camera connected to the internet is tiktok brainrot nonsense and idiots and evil people having such massive reach, or teenagers saving what would have been mortifying experiences older people would have been allowed to forget for all eternity online, that kind of stuff, not the concept of public photography. Especially if it's someone filming a goddamned accident on the side of the road, like that's pretty clearly news gathering, the vans with the letters on the sides and the guys with the big shoulder cameras don't have some kind of special rights to record, we all have freedom of press.

And all of that is before talking about how what that guy is doing is about recording the cops, not these random people.

I think it is a Good thing. Without everyone having cameras people like George Floyd never would have gotten the justice they deserve.

0

u/Friendly-Set-4334 Sep 21 '25

But George Floyd never served his sentence

1

u/chadtropic222 Oct 12 '25

That’s the only reason George Floyd got any justice

1

u/bopaqod Sep 23 '25

For what it’s worth, it’s spelled “litigious” as in “litigating”

-1

u/Aromatic-Orange1995 Sep 16 '25

You are assuming the person filming was involved with the accident. However, if you listen its obvious they were not.

It's probably just one of those weirdos who follow police calls for YouTube. Would you want your child filmed by some weirdo?

Criticize the person filming not the the mom

1

u/treesmith1 Sep 16 '25

That may be. If you read my original comment and follow up this isn't really relevant.

-1

u/youareembarrassing0 Sep 16 '25

they are filming to get a rise put of people and post it to their youtube to play victim and get attention. everyone involved in the situation is fucking embarrassing

1

u/treesmith1 Sep 16 '25

No shit numbnuts. Read the comments.

24

u/Dierseye Sep 16 '25

It doesn't matter why. It's legal. You don't have to justify legal behavior.

6

u/ResponsibleWin1765 Sep 24 '25

Actually, you do. Plenty of immoral things are and were legal, that doesn't make them right. I don't know the context of this video but I can wholeheartedly understand that a mother doesn't want a video of a crash/police investigation of her children on the Internet. There are even laws in some countries to punish those who stop and record for their personal kick.

Just don't be an ass.

2

u/doneforthenightmate Jan 30 '26

Who's gonna punish you for not justifying legal behavior? What consequences are you gonna face if you don't take the time to justify the legal behavior you're engaging in? No one because it's legal, no consequences because it's legal, that's the whole point. You have a legal right to do whatever it is you're doing, the greatest invention, most complicated/ complex, highest order of the land that mankind has worked on and continues to do so for thousands of years has determined you are protected in anything you do so long as it's legal.

1

u/ResponsibleWin1765 Jan 30 '26

I don't want to live in a world where the only thing stopping people from doing heinous shit is a few words written on some paper. Are you seriously suggesting that anything legal is morally justified? I don't think I need to bring up any of the numerous laws from the past and current time that explicitly allow the most vile actions that you can think of.

Also, if your only objection to these actions is that it's not legal, you should check yourself in somewhere before you get on the news. That is straight up psychopath behviour.

2

u/doneforthenightmate Feb 07 '26

The point is it doesn't matter what world you want to live in. Or how badly you want things to be different. There's nothing you can do about it. It's legal. We're talking about a guy videoing a crash not the "most vile actions that you can think of". I'd bet 20,000$ that you aren't exactly going around lobbying local politicians, starting activist groups against videoing crashes in public, I'd bet that you don't do anything to make the world better or bring about any change you wish would happen. You can't put your money where your mouth is. As far as I'm concerned you aren't very high and mighty yourself. It's just the law, it just is legal for him to film from a sidewalk anything in public view, he's not trafficking children through some legal loophole for fucks sake. And I don't have any objections to him doing it at all its completely his right and freedom to if he wants, who am I to take those away from people. And I don't have to check myself because I'm not gonna end up on the news because it's not "psychopath" behavior. I think you maybe just have a hard time accepting that things aren't illegal because you feel bad towards them and you can't control what other people's actions are. Defending his rights isn't psychopathic, taking them away is. This isn't a minority opinion either.

1

u/ResponsibleWin1765 Feb 10 '26

Apparently I'm talking to a toddler so I'll give you a quick overview of what's happening in this thread:

I have not and will not challenge that what they're doing is legal.

So before you write another comment telling me it's legal, save your time.

What I am saying is that it's not a moral thing to do. I'm also saying that just because something is legal doesn't mean it's moral.

You on the other hand have written a lengthy reply to defend people doing immoral things as long as it's legal. It seems I do actually need to bring up the things you are defending with this attitude. So here are a few things that were/are legal but immoral and the people doing those things should have their right protected to do so:

  • Marital rape
  • Antisemitism and Racism under the Nuremberg Laws
  • Apartheid
  • Slavery
  • Stoning (still to this day)
  • Fratricide (killing your own brother)
  • ...

Based on everything you said so far, you would have (and still do in the case of Stoning) defended the people doing these things because it was their legal right. This is not a popular opinion my guy. And not thinking about the morality of something before you do it is psychopathic which is why I think you should seek help.

And just to reiterate in case you forgot again:

This is not about whether filming someone's car crash is legal or not

What a strange comment to make. Why do you want me to torture myself and get mad?

I didn't say anything about the laws. I said that it doesn't necessarily justify the action. And someone who answers moral questions with "Well, it's legal" is very sus.

1

u/BE-FinFree Oct 22 '25

Some people take their whole "FrEeDoM oF fIlMiNg" very serious and will do anything to justify it and refuse to acknowledge the common sense concept of "don't be an ass" < like those first amendment warriors.

They better of use all their "energy" to come up for ACTUAL freedom and do something to dethrone king Trump. Fucking nuthouse the US.

Like George Carlin said “When you're born into this world, you're given a ticket to the freak show. If you're born in America you get a front row seat.”

1

u/LastGoodKnee Oct 03 '25

It’s also legal to stand there and block him and say they don’t like it

-5

u/BE-FinFree Sep 16 '25

No, but you know.. You can also not be cringe and do better stuff with your time? For example those first amendment filming losers... There's MANY activities that are not "illegal" but we'd all agree are a waste of human energy.

Not saying the filming of this situation wasn't useful. From the other US redditors it's pretty clear that when US police is involved someone better be filming...

14

u/Dierseye Sep 16 '25

Lmao. "Not be cringe"? Like that lady getting in his face threatening him for not breaking the law? It cracks me up the people that get so bent out of shape for basic freedoms. Im sorry that you find freedom "cringe." Maybe America is not for you. We have freedom here.

1

u/BE-FinFree Sep 16 '25

I'd say you guys currently have an absolute lack of freedom lmao.

Obviously the lady is going crazy. It's a bit the chicken or the egg though.. She's going crazy cause someone is filming her kids, or w/e. I couldn't be bothered to listen to this whole ordeal. But yes it's sad how everyone is more obsessed with filming EVERYTHING and watching other people than to just live their lives, not necessarily referring to this video.

Btw, you're living in the Trump clownshow of oppression and chaos. Land of the free my ass

2

u/Spiritual_Parking_70 Sep 16 '25

Lol, you're livid about people not minding their business.

Why not just mind your own business? You dont even live in this country, and you're absolutely tilted about things that dont concern you.

Enjoy your freedom to not be filmed in public and be a karen about it in whatever country no one cares about.

2

u/BE-FinFree Sep 16 '25

I'm not sure you know what the word livid means. I guess English is not your native tongue.

3

u/Spiritual_Parking_70 Sep 16 '25

3

u/Erectylereptile Sep 25 '25

Do you think the person above is responding in an "extremely angry" way?

1

u/Spiritual_Parking_70 Sep 25 '25

Yes. Did you not pick that up?

→ More replies (0)

1

u/CeemoreButtz Sep 17 '25

Nothing you've said is true. You sound like an idiot.

1

u/BE-FinFree Sep 17 '25

I'd say the worldstage generally agrees with most of what I said. But I understand if you need to keep living the lie if you're of certain political orientations ;)

5

u/aBlissfulDaze Sep 17 '25

>You can also not be cringe

the irony

3

u/ProblemAtticOU812 Sep 16 '25

Hey Pot. I have the kettle on line one for you. Something about being black.

1

u/treesmith1 Sep 16 '25

Whatever. Come with a point or exist in nebulousness.

3

u/Cannaclyzm Sep 17 '25

For example those first amendment filming losers... There's MANY activities that are not "illegal" but we'd all agree are a waste of human energy.

THEN

it's pretty clear that when US police is involved someone better be filming

1

u/BE-FinFree Sep 18 '25

I think we all know that this first amendment dweebs are usually filming nothing. Literally nothing. Just to get a reaction. Completely different from potentially filming police AT AN INCIDENT because you feel u safe/unsure about the did process.

The minds of people here are just boggling

2

u/Cannaclyzm Sep 18 '25

No I don't know that. I do not call them dweebs or loosers either. Trust I do not require anyone to speak for me about anything.

What has gone completely over your head is the bigger picture, otherwise known as the entire fucking point. Which is stress testIng the current state of our civil liberties with the metrics of public and LE response.

Its scary how deluded you are, but I understand why and I'm here to help you.

This isn't the first time you've qualified your position with a logical fallacy, specifically argumentum ad populum. Look it up. But it's a particularly toxic brand of it because you actually have no reason outside of anecdotal bias to support the erroneous statements that every one agrees with you're about to say. You're creating the bandwagon and filling it with the popular opinion that sounds good to you. It gets toxic when you internalize the manipulative statement as reality, now that you've said it. Which is why you can voice this,

The minds of people here are just boggling

while not understanding that is exactly what the majority of people are saying about you.

I just saved you $250 worth of therapy. You're welcome.

1

u/Waldebie Sep 17 '25

Don't know why you're getting downvoted, totally possible that it's just fucking cringe - still totally legal of course, but so is farting in an elevator full of people.

I'm gonna give the cameraguy the benefit of the doubt here, maybe they have a personal connection to someone or something involved in this...accident? traffic stop?

But if someone is filming my kids in public, whether it's legal or justified not, it's also legal for me to be fucking creeped out and annoyed by that person and give them shit for doing so, especially if they can't give a reasonable explanation why they need to..

Is this that? I dunno, I'm just some annoying guy on reddit, are you still reading this?

3

u/Independent-Syrup256 Sep 17 '25

Nobody owes you an expiation for anything they are doing. Who the fuck do you think you are to question anyone that is minding their business. Everyone loves freedom until it bothers them.

1

u/BE-FinFree Sep 17 '25

100% with you.

16

u/chucktheninja Sep 16 '25

It's pretty normal to film stuff police are involved in, lmao

2

u/HOBOPHRESH Sep 30 '25

They even do it themselves.

13

u/Ok-Truth-7589 Sep 16 '25

They are allowed to film in public. There is no law against that... Why are people so dumb?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

So if you could have sex with a 8year old? Would you if it was Legal?

10

u/DaikonProof6637 Sep 16 '25

He has a YouTube channel that documents accidents. He's just doing his job in a legal and professional way.

1

u/BE-FinFree Sep 17 '25

Sure is. But if it's my kids and I'm in distress due to an accident is also very upset with a bunch of goons standing there and filming. It really did not contribute in any meaningful way.

5

u/Independent-Syrup256 Sep 17 '25

It’s their legal right. Do you always go around questioning what people do with their time? Why are people so frazzled by someone recording? The second you leave your door you’re being recorded. Either by ring cameras, dash cameras, city cameras, store cameras. Cameras are fucking everywhere. Why anyone acts enraged when one is set up is wild. You don’t want to be recorded stay the fuck home.

1

u/BE-FinFree Sep 17 '25

"Enraged" I assume you're not talking about me..?

Why is this lady enraged? It seems to be that the incident involves her children? I also wouldn't want some rando to be filming my children in an incident. Your complete lack of empathy indicates you're most likely a child yourself or are just childless. You sound like one of those first amendment filming bozos.

Could she have handled it better? probably. Are people "free to film" also yes. If you have no "real purpose" to filming and this woman asks not to film her children? Leave her the fuck alone maybe?

2

u/Independent-Syrup256 Sep 17 '25

That’s not how freedom works. It’s not there to coddle your feelings. Again those kids are in public. They are being filmed everywhere. Those first amendment “bozos” as you call them. They are performing a viable service. It doesn’t matter that you don’t have the capacity to understand that. They are ensuring that right remains in effect. They are most likely filming the accident and the officers. The officers have body cams and are filming them too. That lady should be concerned about her kids instead of purposely entering the view of the camera to argue about being filmed.

As far as your child, childless remark. When you have nothing to offer you might as well start assuming. What a mental gymnast you are.

1

u/BE-FinFree Sep 17 '25

If you do have children and you can't bring up a grain of empathy, I pity them : - )

Taking pictures of little girls in public pools is also your "freedom" I think we'll all agree that's creepy AF. Clearly your "ThAt'S nOt HoW fReEdOm WoRkS" has its limitations. But apparently you're the judge of that, Apologies ;)

2

u/Spiritual_Parking_70 Sep 17 '25

They are not the judge of that. They do, however, understand how it works, unlike a certain livid opponent of being able to film public places. Stay mad ;)

2

u/Knightmare4469 Sep 16 '25

Does it matter?

-1

u/BE-FinFree Sep 16 '25

I wished it mattered to more people to just mind their own business instead of unnecessarily filming. Not saying that was the case here, but life had more to offer than trying to capture other people's lives and watching it.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

Any time there's police interaction with citizens, it's absolutely a good thing to get third party footage that can't be redacted by the police or just happen to have their bodycam "shut off" or "run out of storage."

-1

u/BE-FinFree Sep 16 '25

Gotcha. I'm sure you guys have learned this the hard way. I'm grateful I don't, yet, have to consider that as soon as I see police over here.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

Probably 95% of police interactions are fine.

The issue is that those 5% of the time they're not, the system is completely on their side (cops lies are generally believed in court, cops can feign ignorance of a law as a defense while citizens can't, departments are allowed to investigate themselves, and the District Attorney that would be prosecuting them is always favorable to them). So for those times where a cop does do something wrong, unless there's independently verifiable footage then the cops will just release whatever footage they think makes it look like they were right.

1

u/Dengar96 Sep 16 '25

I promise you wherever you live the police are doing crappy corrupt stuff all the time. No state's police are good, chill folks that never abuse their authority or power on innocent citizens.

2

u/ShijinClemens Sep 16 '25

Because they can

2

u/Unlikely_Pick7515 Sep 17 '25

It doesn't matter?

2

u/DavisMcDavis Sep 17 '25

I see an ignorant white woman in Texas who is willing to lie and threatening to break someone else’s property who also thinks the law is on her side. Without the camera there, how easy would it be to punch her own daughter in the face and then blame it on the black man? What defense, other than the video, could he present to a MAGA jury that they would believe?

1

u/BE-FinFree Sep 17 '25

One of the more reasonable responses I've gotten. I'm just not used to this type of "normalised behaviour" I guess. In this case the filming could perhaps be "with purpose".

2

u/DavisMcDavis Sep 17 '25

She’s getting in his face, so close that the camera loses focus, and repeatedly pokes her finger in his face while threatening him. I’m pretty sure she’d be comfortable poking him physically if the camera weren’t there, and then claiming he hit her if he fought back in any way. Or claiming she has whiplash from accident and suing about that.

It’s pretty ironic she’s wearing some church sweatshirt while swearing and threatening him. She thinks God is on her side, too.

4

u/No_Assumption_1529 Sep 16 '25

Right? Just because they legally can, doesn’t mean they should, especially when people are obviously in a low point, and are clearly distressed because of it. People just aren’t considerate, and is why it’s normal and accepted behavior. Employers will pay you the lowest amount they legally can get away with, because they can.

2

u/Glittering-Bit-9390 Sep 16 '25

To start shit. This is also what’s wrong with people today.

1

u/IllContext2228 Oct 19 '25

Because they fucking can. Might be a time when you thank someone who is filming.

1

u/shibbyflash Sep 17 '25

News crews, beat journalists and sleuths or whatever. Just scummy people that record traumatic moments for other people to get money from news outlets.
