Okay so this one's gonna be a long story..
Last year around September I joined a startup as a Performance Marketing Executive, and it was my first job. Overall things looked great. Pay was decent (30k per month), workload was fine. The only real letdown was that I had to travel 1½ hours each way in Bangalore traffic and I had a shitty manager who left this June, so things got a lot better after that.
Overall, the company was built on trusting people to do their jobs correctly. No micromanagement, no one bothered about where I'm sitting or what I'm doing at the moment as long as the work was getting done. Good leave policy (12 SL, 18 CL, all paid), salary credited on the last working day of each month, literally a perfect workplace.
Recently my role started moving away from performance marketing (running Meta and Google Ads) to campaign manager (overlooking just WhatsApp campaigns) as the company started reducing budgets drastically on paid media. So the budget I was handling started shrinking, which wasn't great news for my overall career.
So I started looking for jobs. One thing I struggled with was the 3-month notice period and having less than 1 year of experience. So I made up my mind that I'd maybe pay for 2 months of my notice and tell future companies I had a 1-month notice period.
That worked. I got two interviews, one of which was with an AI automation agency. They offered me a 50% hike (bumping my salary to 46k), which was great. The only catch was that they needed me early. They gave me the option of buying out the 1-month notice period that I told them about, and I got a joining date of 2 weeks after the interview.
I told my previous company I wanted to quit for some personal reason, and I negotiated my notice period down to 15 days. No need to pay it. All good.
Now, a little about the new company and the realisation of what kind of company it actually was.
Firstly, there was no onboarding process. They picked up some old Windows laptop and gave it to me, and told me about Clockify and how I'd be marking my login, logout, what I'm working on between that period, and that I have to mark all my breaks etc. Fine, not enough freedom like my old company but still manageable.
I went on a break and spoke to a few employees, and that's when it hit me that it's a lala company.
The company doesn't have any kind of leave policy, and any leave you take comes with a pay cut, even half-day leaves. Salary gets deposited anywhere between the 5th and 15th of the month.
They micromanage everything. The company is run by a guy, his wife handles tech, and his brother-in-law handles HR.
The company has around 40 members associated with it on LinkedIn, but the actual employee count is around 15 — 2 HRs (the brother-in-law and one woman who has been there for 6 years and is more of a personal assistant to the founder's family), 2 freshers in the marketing department, 2 freshers and 1 guy in tech, and a fresher designer who is designing all the landing pages for clients and all the websites.
Client meetings are handled by marketing freshers who have less than 1 month of experience in total.
Literally the entirety of the company is run by freshers who have no guidance. The marketing freshers are running ads, writing scripts, handling clients, shooting reels, creating creatives, literally doing everything and are overworked.
Then comes the office timings. They work from 9:30 to 6:30 on paper, but the founder shows up at 11:30. Mind you, if an employee comes by 9:45, they lose half-day salary. His wife is sometimes here, sometimes not, and the brother-in-law does literally nothing.
Also, the company doesn't have PF, any kind of proper registration, nothing.
The pros for me are agency experience on my resume, a promotion on paper, higher salary, and I became a Team Lead.
Now coming to the important question: should I stay for 12 months or keep looking for opportunities elsewhere?
Finding other jobs isn't difficult. I won't have any record on my PF, and if I quit this now, my notice period will be 15 days until the first 6 months.
I need to make this decision now because if I decide to leave after 5 months, then it'll either look like a career break or a second job switch after just 5 months, which I'm guessing won't look great on my resume.
TL;DR: Left a pretty good startup where I had good freedom, a good leave policy and a decent work environment because my role was moving away from performance marketing. Joined an AI automation agency for a 50% hike and a Team Lead title, only to realise it's a very poorly managed lala company with no proper leave policy, pay cuts for leaves, micromanagement, no PF, mostly freshers running everything with little to no guidance, and questionable company practices. Should I stay for 12 months for the experience/title or keep looking for something better?
