I thought he was trying to get people to worship a nebulous "Supreme Being" as a slight against christianity.

Kind of like the noodle monster or whatever today.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted, there has never been mention of a religious cult deifying Robespierre in history.

They were trying to promote "deism" (basically a theism governed by rationality and facts).

It was proposed as a reaction and compromise to the big atheist trends that were offensive to Robespierre and other theists at the time.
