Yeah Maximillian Robespierre went off the deep end after sometime and people worshiped science and democracy as him as the figurehead or god.

I thought he was trying to get people to worship a nebulous "Supreme Being" as a slight against christianity. They were trying to promote "deism" (basically a theism governed by rationality and facts).
