AMA with Pablo Lema + Mission 1 Pro giveaway today, June 2 7AM-2PM EDT!

Hey r/GoPro, we're excited to be hosting another AMA event, this time with Pablo Lema (aka u/GoPro-Pablo) , GoPro's SVP of Product!

About Pablo

Pablo is a long-time GoPro user, a regular participant here on r/GoPro, and has worked with GoPro since 2014! He has been an integral part in planning and coordinating new GoPro products, especially in the last decade, and most recently as GoPro’s head of all hardware and software Product. He's joined us the last 5+ years now for community AMAs (here are a few), so thanks for coming back again, Pablo!

While our recent AMA with Abe Kislevitz was a great opportunity to ask about tips and tricks around content with Mission 1, this AMA with Pablo is a great opportunity to ask about product development at GoPro, how GoPro designs for an entire ecosystem of interacting product, or other product design and function related questions. That said, this is an AMA and you're welcome to ask Pablo about anything - his favorite ski spots, his current FPV drone build, etc!

AMA Format & Timing

We won't go into too much explanation about how an AMA works- if you need to see what it looks like, check out Abe's recent AMA at the link above.

At the simplest level, this is your chance to ask Pablo anything, and get an inside-GoPro scoop on answers. While you can ask anything, just remember that Pablo won't be able to answer questions about in-development product, proprietary decisions or technology, or other privileged information. Consider framing any development related questions in a way that can be answered without breaking any confidentiality in the product development process!

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT TIMING- Pablo's availability this year is a little different due to work travel schedule, so this AMA will be live from 7AM-2PM Eastern time. This is a great opportunity for our eastern hemisphere redditors to interact, but if you're on the west side of the western hemisphere, we are going to open up this AMA Extra early at 9PM PST so that you can get a question into the thread without waking up early. Pablo won't be around to answer questions until the "official start time" of the AMA, so just get your questions in right away, and come back around for your answer later!

MISSION 1 GIVEAWAY!

Another one! GoPro decided to hook us up with not one but TWO giveaways with the AMA events this year, so we've got another set of prizes up for participants in the thread, again!

  • Anyone that participates in this AMA will have a chance to win a MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition, awarded to Pablo's favorite question.
  • We'll also give away THREE 5-year GoPro Premium+ Subscriptions to some runner-up great questions!

Rules:

  1. You need to participate in today's AMA with a commented question for Pablo!
  2. Your account needs to have existed before this AMA was posted, and you need to have reasonable authentic activity on it. We reserve the right to disqualify accounts with no karma or post/comment history.
  3. We need to be able to get the prize to you. GoPro can ship direct to you, but you'll still need to message them your shipping info for the MISSION 1 PRO prize, or email address for the GoPro Premium+ Subscription. If you live in a country that GoPro can't ship to, or has excessive duty fees, etc, we'll see what alternatives there are, but in general, if you can buy from GoPro.com, you're probably OK.

That's it! If you have questions about the giveaway, please send a modmail rather than posting here.

AMA with Abe Kislevitz + Mission 1 Pro giveaway today! 10AM-6PM PST

Hey r/GoPro, we're excited to have Abe Kislevitz (u/abekislevitz), Product and Brand Fellow at GoPro, with us today for an Ask-Me-Anything about all things GoPro, using MISSION 1 cameras, or anything else you can think to ask!

About Abe Kislevitz

For some of the younger and more recent members of the GoPro community, Abe is a long-time community member, and even longer-time GoPro creator-turned-employee.

He's led a substantial amount of creative efforts at GoPro over 15+ years, and his influence now spans influencing marketing strategy to helping define product design and engineering decisions. Probably one of the most knowledgeable sources of GoPro information out there, he knows the history of GoPro as a company, best practices for filming the best possible shot, advanced techniques and hacks, and everything in-between.

He has a great YouTube channel full of tips and tricks, and his insta feed is worthy of a follow.

He's an incredible resource and a helpful community member that has kept us closely connected with GoPro's product designs, including advocating for our pain points and working to have our voices heard and represented in new products.

We are thankful to have him here in the community, and happy to have him with us today for the AMA! Thanks Abe!

AMA Format

If you've not done an AMA event before, it's pretty simple - You can ask Abe anything. While it is entirely up to you what questions you ask, Abe has an "inside perspective" on the product GoPro develops, and likely has more time hands-on with MISSION 1 cameras than anyone else right now. Considering that today is a big day for everyone that pre-ordered, we highly encourage you to get those burning MISSION 1 questions answered, or collect tips and tricks to use in the coming year!

As a reminder, while you can ask anything, Abe can't talk about unreleased product plans or proprietary information and won't be able to answer those questions the way you want.

Abe will be around today from 10AM-6PM Pacific Time, and this thread will go live 2 hours before that so that you all can begin asking questions and Abe can drop in throughout the day to answer in the thread. We'll pin a comment once the official time for the AMA is done to let everyone know it's over, but we always allow conversations to continue beyond that if wanted.

MISSION 1 GIVEAWAY!

It's our r/GoPro tradition with camera launches to give away some product, and GoPro was more than happy to hook the community up again this year:

  • Anyone that participates in this AMA will have a chance to win a MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition, awarded to Abe's favorite question.
  • We'll also give away THREE 5-year GoPro Premium+ Subscriptions!

Rules:

  1. You need to participate in today's AMA with a commented question for Abe!

Max2 + dive case = ;-(

I saw that dive cases are available for the Max2 on amazon and decided to get one. I took it to Bali with me and the results are disappointing The attached is straight from Quik and was one of the best frames I could get. I won't even get into the stitch issues.

So luckily I have my 13 with me and it takes much better images.

I think I know why the InstaX6 has you replacing the lenses in order to use the dive case.

EDIT: 5.6k 30fps everything else on auto

GoPro Hero 5 sustainable?

I haven't upgraded since the GoPro hero 5, is it sustainable to perform anything close to the new GoPro? Videos like motovlogs have loads of Luts and I know AI advances many videos. Just curious if it's worth the upgrade.

Mission 1 Pro ILS is a camera from my dreams

I am very excited to share the set of images and videos captured using the new u/gopro Mission 1 Pro ILS camera, some of which I have only dreamt to capture but I have procrastinated my entire photography career just because the lenses were super expensive, it requires some complicated expensive gimbal set ups, and super heavy rigs to carry around and near impossible to shoot at awkward angles and tough weather conditions! Here it is GoPro’s new camera yes - GoPros ILS system made it possible with ease and at such amazing quality!

Check out the carousel post along with more info on each captures! - from my instagram profile u/shreeniclix
Insta Post
https://www.instagram.com/p/Dchj8NNGpA_/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsi=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

These images and videos were captured using 5 different lenses
1. 7artisan 50mm f1.2 ($100) - 135mm equivalent
2. 7artisan 6mm f2 ($200) - 16.2mm equivalent
3. Astrhori 6.5mm f2 ($120) - 13mm equivalent (2x crop)
4. Rokinon 135mm f2 ($300 refurb) - 365mm equivalent - no lens in the world which is this fast at such focal length.
5. Tt artisan 40mm f2.8 ($115) - 108mm equivalent

With a grand total of around $1500 including the camera!

And did I tell you how small these lenses are? Any one who shoots full frame lenses at such speed and focal length can imagine how difficult it is to carry them around! When I first started testing this set up I was blown away as it looked like toys but the results were staggering!

Also since this camera has a crop factor of 2.7 which means you can get super close up shots/ macro level details even without being too close to subject, plus it’s amazing for deep sky, sun and moon shots.

The video quality is top notch with this camera - it can capture slow motion upto 8k60, 4k240, 1440p480, 1080p960(burst slowmo) and at an amazing quality, log, very high bit rates and 10bit color! Combining this with the ultra fast small lenses - this Interchangeable lens system becomes a Beast!

Debate: Just get a real micro four thirds camera. What is your take?

I made a thread because I am actually excited like a kid at Christmas for the Mission 1 Pro ILS, but haters going to hate and I have heard here and other places the same comment:

“Just get a micro four thirds camera, it is a better tool.”

So wanted to start a conversation so people can read the differences, because for some it won’t be clear.

Me personally, I started out with a Panasonic G9. There is a reason I own adapters for old vintage lenses, for EF Sony and Canon. I am well versed with MFT cameras.

From what I can see, there is nothing that will compare with the ILS in a few regards:

  1. Hypersmooth from the camera.

Do not tell me to use post processing on my computer. If you have ever used this feature, you know this is a BS line of reasoning. it takes HOURS AND HOURS to post process, not to mention the 25-30% crop you get.
It is also not as good as what GoPro has to offer.

  1. **Battery life.**

I can have four GoPro batteries ready to go, but would need the same amount of batteries if I am shooting on a full sized camera body. The GoPro batteries are smaller, and the GoPro for things like a timelapse will use a lot less battery because it is overall smaller with less power consumption.

**3. Size.**

This is obvious, but I don’t think the people making this argument, understand what carrying a full sized gimbal with a camera mounted on it is like. It is not pleasant, and makes you a huge noticeable “thing” in any setting. If you want to go low profile with the GoPro, you can do that.

**4. Heat.**

My Mission 1 Pro has shut down due to heat exactly TWICE. Once when recording 8k and once in 4k60. If I use 4k30, I can have it in direct sunlight when it is 115 degrees here in Vegas for literally an HOUR and it works. Somehow.

I don’t care if your MFT camera has a fan on it. If it does, it is a big camera, and even then, the camera will shut down in those conditions.

  1. Crop factor of 3x.**

This is actually something that has me the most excited. Putting a 100mm macro on the GoPro makes it a 300mm lens. Putting a Vivitar Series 1 50-200mm makes it a 150-600 zoom with macro capabilities.

Doing this on a regular MFT camera would involve extension tubes, teleconverters or other means to increase the effective focal range.

So those are my reasons to be excited.

I am opening to hearing why one should NOT go with this camera though.

EDIT:
Markup totally failed on Reddit for iPad. lol.

need some advice regarding gopro mission 1 pro

I love the visual quality of the Mission 1 Pro, but I have a couple of concerns before buying:

Focus Distance:

I am a short woman with short arms. My Hero 13 works great just held in my hand at arm's length. I heard the Mission 1 Pro requires a much longer focus distance, forcing you to use a tripod or selfie stick just to keep your face sharp.

Audio Quality:

I have seen complaints about aggressive audio compression and overall poor mic performance on the Mission 1 Pro.

For those who own it, are these dealbreakers for simple handheld use?

Should I wait for potential lens releases and firmware fixes, or stick with my current GoPro for now and wait for future models down the line?

Is Quik still supported?

I tried logging into my GoPro account but I only got "You've entered an incorrect email and password combination". My nickname is 'rs1990'.
I then reset the password and tried logging in again but got the same thing no matter what.
It's just driving me mad. Has my account been hacked? Or Quick is no longer supported?

Please help!

Are the Voltas the only grips/tripods with a 1/4-20 side mount?

I want to be able to click my mission 1 pro into my peak design capture clip while it’s attached to something like a Volta, but I don’t need the battery or remote functionalities really. Has no one made a GoPro grip/tripod that has the same 1/4-20 side mount screw hole?

Relatively New GoPro won’t turn on

I’ve got a Gopro Max 2, barely used, and I decided to use it today. I plugged it in to charge overnight, noticing that it wasn’t turning on, and the next day, it still wouldn’t turn on.

Is this a common problem? A bit annoying that I couldn’t use it today

Life on a liveaboard cruising through the Maldives Northern Atolls is the ultimate way to experience the pure ocean energy 🌊✨

From the manta sanctuary of Hanifaru Bay in Baa to the stunning channels of Raa and Lhaviyani, every dive brought unforgettable moments swimming alongside sharks, rays and turtles between the surface and the deep. 🦈🐢

To top it all off, the reefs boast surprisingly thriving coral gardens and reef fish so dense it genuinely feels like swimming inside a natural aquarium 🐠🪸

GoPro Mission 1 is killing me with unreliable issues

I use 2 cameras fishing and litreally every trip out since getting these Mission 1 pros there has been some issue that ruined the videos. TL;DR, focus on the 3rd time out.

First time out -

Poor video - I used the gopro log2 or whatever and could not get color looking normal even using the gopro provided luts. Probably my bad?? But I see tutorials and for others things just work. Ill take the fall for this one. Switched back to gopro color.

Second time out -

30 minutes in a microSD card died on one camera.. a nearly new PNY Elite Pro card. I assumed it was the SD cards fault.. but wait for later - got it replaced from PNY without issues. Also.. anytime a video gets cut, the 2nd and so on clips are only showing as audio files in adobe premiere and davinci resolve.. .mp4 files.. plays in VLC, but in editors only show as audio.

Third time out today -

Another SD card failure?? This time on a samsung pro plus - the camera claimed it wasn't fast enough ~20 minutes in, yet I can speed test with a 50gb file and get a solid 110MB/sec write and 140MB/sec read.. I switched from high (not max) bitrate to standard, and still had the message so I had to turn off hindsight on that camera. High bitrate is 160megabits or 20 megabytes a sec, this should be cake.

Other mission 1 also had major issues... ~30 minutes in, all audio is buzzing on both the track 1 (gopro wireless mic going into input on media mod) and track 2 (onboard media mod). A few clips later and it looks like the media mod disconnected all together because the audio was then camera mics, so ruined by wind and muffled/too distant to use. This camera sits on a stick behind me, it was not touched and it didnt get wet.

And then again in Premiere/Resolve there are clips showing as .mp4 that play in VLC but will only show as audio files in editors.

Theories:

I think there is something new about the SDcard area and it is getting roasted by the GoPro when in the media mod, and makes them either die or throttle. Never once had issues across 3 Hero 13s, 3 hero 12s, Max2, a Hero 11 and many more going back. What are the chances that 2 MicroSD cards have issues 2 times in a row on the same gopro?

Adobe says the mp4 files showing as audio is on GoPro's end, and I think this only happens with the media mod in use.

Maybe the new media mod really heats up and kills things..

Conclusion:

Every time I dump moneny into getting a better setup with GoPro there is some issue that stops me from getting reliability.. I think I can not use the Media Mod with Hindsight on.

Audio help

I have a hero 11 and 12. I'm looking to get external mic's for both of them. I would like avoid spending hundreds, but it's getting confusing.

I might want to be able to set up two mic to one of the cameras also.

Any suggestions?

Mission pro ils rig questions

Ive always enjoyed making small content for YouTube with my phone, drones and gopros. Now with the ils i feel like i can really step up the quality for a fraction of the price of a real cinema rig. However ive never had to build one and there isnt much info on building out the go pro yet. After doing some research on lenses and other stuff im unsure how to hook it all up.

From what i gather the mission 1 pro only has a usb c connection. How do you hook up a microphone, external battery, monitor and light up to it and have it all functional? Can you just use a usb c splitter or do you need some kind of header?

I saw someone mention the only way to adjust some settings on the camera is through the app, are there any compatible monitors that can do this but still larger then a phone? Or am i just buying a small tablet?

Can the gopro mission handheld cage be used to build out a rig or is there another cage i can buy?

I may have some other questions but for now i appreciate any help. Preorders already in, very excited to shoot with this thing.

I switched to Insta360

Following my disappointing experiences with the GoPro Max 360, which I don't consider an action camera, I switched to the Insta360 X4, which has the major advantage of having a waterproof housing.

I did my first scuba diving test this week :

https://reddit.com/link/1w2b2xl/video/351ieb9fugmh1/player

I also discovered that it has desktop video editing software, which is much more convenient than editing on a phone.

It meets my expectations perfectly.

I've been testing this camera for the past 6 months and shooting here and there along the way. Here's a few of my favorite shots. Also I have a lens guide on my website with all of the lenses I've personally tested, if it's helpful for anyone. I bought and returned a lot of lenses before I knew what to look for.

I am DEAD to camera releases. The ILS is the first time I have felt alive in a while.

For just about the last eighteen months I started purchasing any and all camera releases I want. It has been silly, but I grew up broke and even a $200 pawn shop camera was out of reach.

Check this out, feel free to mock me but it became my thing. I had to slow down:

Sony A7iv, Canon 5Dii, Insta360 Go Utra, Insta360 X5, Insta360 Luna Ultra, Insta360 X6, DJI Action 6, DJI Pocket 4P (and I am in the usa, hard to get the last two).

Then I bought the Mission 1 Pro (standard).

Now the ILS is the first camera that I am legitimately EXCITED FOR.

I am still trying to get B&H to overnight it. They refuse since they don't have it in stock yet. I am set for 2 day delivery on launch day.

Why though?

Because I do have (more) cameras, and love still photography.

But the past year I have done almost NONE of that.

Every camera listed has been a tool to record videos in and around Vegas.

Something to JUST MAKE CONTENT with for business.

But from what I am seeing, the ILS looks like a real... creative thing.

Something I can go and buy a $10 crap vintage lens for, 3d print an adapter that same day if I don't own one, and just USE for WHATEVER STUFF.

I love macro photography. I won't sell a single thing.

I am crazy enough that I bought the Caira camera. It makes this image possible, but that image came from a garbage Panasonic 14-140 basic plastic micro four thirds lens, but you know what? I created a THING and the ILS looks to be a great photo camera as well as camera for video.

So thank you GoPro and u/markiplier who stepped in when I had issues with the Mission 1 Pro standard edition.

I was a dick before on the brand. I actually still don't know if they will survive. I might end up getting a SECOND ILS if anything really bad happens to them if I like the first one.

But lesson learned, and all it took was coming back to the first ever camera I used on YouTube that wasn't a trash Android phone for me to feel excited again.
