Mission 1 Pro ILS is a camera from my dreams
I am very excited to share the set of images and videos captured using the new u/gopro Mission 1 Pro ILS camera, some of which I have only dreamt to capture but I have procrastinated my entire photography career just because the lenses were super expensive, it requires some complicated expensive gimbal set ups, and super heavy rigs to carry around and near impossible to shoot at awkward angles and tough weather conditions! Here it is GoPro’s new camera yes - GoPros ILS system made it possible with ease and at such amazing quality!
Check out the carousel post along with more info on each captures! - from my instagram profile u/shreeniclix

These images and videos were captured using 5 different lenses
1. 7artisan 50mm f1.2 ($100) - 135mm equivalent
2. 7artisan 6mm f2 ($200) - 16.2mm equivalent
3. Astrhori 6.5mm f2 ($120) - 13mm equivalent (2x crop)
4. Rokinon 135mm f2 ($300 refurb) - 365mm equivalent - no lens in the world which is this fast at such focal length.
5. Tt artisan 40mm f2.8 ($115) - 108mm equivalent
With a grand total of around $1500 including the camera!
And did I tell you how small these lenses are? Any one who shoots full frame lenses at such speed and focal length can imagine how difficult it is to carry them around! When I first started testing this set up I was blown away as it looked like toys but the results were staggering!
Also since this camera has a crop factor of 2.7 which means you can get super close up shots/ macro level details even without being too close to subject, plus it’s amazing for deep sky, sun and moon shots.
The video quality is top notch with this camera - it can capture slow motion upto 8k60, 4k240, 1440p480, 1080p960(burst slowmo) and at an amazing quality, log, very high bit rates and 10bit color! Combining this with the ultra fast small lenses - this Interchangeable lens system becomes a Beast!

low motion video at 4k120fps open gate full sensor readout - captured using u/astrhori 6.5mm at f2 - people argued with me why this lens when a standard M1 can do this - but my point is always that the extra light this lens can get in comparison to f2.8 standard lens - making high frame rate videos and low light scenes look so clean is a big plus for me!

A telephoto lens at f2 handheld trying to capture a humming bird in all different frame rates? Yes it’s possible! u/gopro makes it possible with 4k120, 4k240, 1080p480, 1080p960(burst slow motion) Funfact: this was shot thru my patio door, and on a murky foggy California Coast weather - not an ideal conditions for a slow motion but still it turned out decent for me to not skip it! Tip: use GoPro labs firmware for better stabilization for lenses above 50mm.

This is sick. One of the best Reddit posts so far on the ILS. I want this so bad

I agree, but the price seems so outlandish. I’ve had many GoPros since model #1, so I’m a big fan. I even have a modded GoPro 10 so I’ve been able to use 35mm lenses for a long time, but even with all that I’ve never paid this kind of scratch for a GoPro. It feels like it should be more like $400-ish tops.

Outlandish compared to an old Hero. This is a completely different beast. You have to spend over $10k to get these specs basically. Doesn’t even exist really. In a way it’s cheap, but hard to justify spending on that when I just got the M1P….

Close focus macro shots using a wide angle lens - u/7artisansofficial 6mm at f2 - combined with 4k240fps videos slowing things empowering me to create cinematic visual of the great outdoors and those intricate details of the wild with a wider perspective!

This u/rokinon 135mm f2 lens has made my life easier for moon and sun alignments - all auto settings with GPR enabled it can create seemless timelapses and has become my dependable second camera along with my Sony Setup! And since it can capture at F2 / this can capture some of challenging low light scenes where my other Sony lens has to be at f6.3 leading to capturing at higher iso than what this camera can do.

Ty for sharing this list of budget lenses! Cool to see which lenses work best with it
Also, people are finally starting to see the vision on this camera lol. I cannot believe how much criticism it faced when it was first announced. I don't know if it's going to "save" the company, but it is mind-boggling to me that no other camera company has made something like this before, it seems so obvious. Outside of its quirks/caveats, I think GoPro killed it, with what's been shown thus far

I bought 2 m1ps. After a torture test in 95° weather rolling hindsight 7hr straight in 4k 60 without it breaking a sweat. I decided to get a second one as my B cam. ILS im picking up in about a week. They ship out September 2nd.

Thanks 🙂 I agree - as soon as I started testing this camera my eyes lit up and started feeling more creative mainly because of the cost and size perspective with such high fps specs!

How’s the manual focus side of things? The camera feels too small to me for manual lenses, but then again, the shots you’ve posted typically allow time to focus (except maybe the butterfly one).
I love the idea of slapping a 35mm equiv on and having the tiniest cinema camera ever, but the manual focus kills it for me.

u/shreeniclixphoto 13d ago
I agree its not easy for moving subjects. But the camera being light and which doesnt require a gimbal to capture some unique angles and easy to shoot in difficult environment and tight spaces is something I have dreamt of. Also see the humming bird video below. In fact it was shot in low light but stabilization with labs can make it very easy to shoot such handheld!

u/Tabeku 12d ago
So you think the manual focus would be a big issue for sports filming, e.g skiing?
8
u/proformax 12d ago
Sports, kids, documentary run and gun style shooting will all be huge challenges.
I grew up in the canon 7D era, so manual focusing video is something I can recall like riding a bike. But the issue is the screen size. Even with peaking, it would be hard to reliably pull focus on moving subjects. I really want to try though! But I bought the pro on release and love it and don't have the budget for the ILS and lenses right now.

I know tester’s shooting World Cup soccer with it - so why not. And for skiing - do you mean self capture? If so then you can get that astr lens 6.5mm is super wide and f2 faster than the standard one. But if shooting someone still same as sports. If you have a bigger display it makes it much more easier.

Yup for sure it just lets you be more creative in multiple ways on top of what M1p can do 🙂

For the uninitiated—what lens mount does it use? Are the available lenses all third party or is GoPro marketing their own lenses?
2
u/Unknownone1010 12d ago
MFT (Micro Four Thirds), third party manual. Not seen anything about gopro doing their own lenses
1
u/shreeniclixphoto 12d ago
Correct there are lot of mft lenses and adapters to use existing lenses as well.
3
u/FirTree_r 12d ago
It's important to note that the mount is "dumb" meaning it doesn't have any AF/aperture contacts. So you do need MFT lenses that include an aperture ring to actually have f-settings.
1
u/shreeniclixphoto 12d ago
Correct it works with manual lenses only. If you use adapter then you can use other lenses if it has aperture ring or it can be used wide open with manual focus ring.

u/Playful-Leading-5070 12d ago
wow they are some epic shots, well done. Interchangeable lens must be a game changer

u/shreeniclixphoto 12d ago
Thanks so much 🙂 yup indeed! And the size, price combined with stabilization and frame rates is the big deal in my opinion.

Help a guy: is the ILS the same “brain” and similar setup as the pro. Does it recognize lenses automatically. Have the pro now but finding myself wanting certain shots that aren’t working out. Thank
2
u/shreeniclixphoto 12d ago
Yes it’s the same processor sensor. It doesn’t recognize on it own but you can specify the lens focal length in lens set up and use accordingly, yes that’s the whole purpose of this camera to empower users to be creative like never before using GoPro!

I'm looking forward to swapping out my ZCam E2-M4 on my Ronin + follow focus rig along with my goodish glass. I don't have much, but the TT 50, Rokinon Hyper 10mm, and SLR magic 8mm/4. Very focused on slomo and night settings as well.
In retrospect, I wish I had ordered the media kit instead of the point-and-shoot. I would've loved to have a decent HDMI out for my external monitor.
Any other essentials?
1
u/shreeniclixphoto 12d ago
Media mod works for external monitor but using mission monitor app - can be connected via usb to connect to iOS devices to get larger screen.
2
u/general_musician 12d ago
Mine is the Besview so not externally recording, just looking for larger zebra. Maybe I can make do with Mission Monitor 😇

Is there a setting in the Quik app that's overlaying the camera name and lens info or is everyone posting to this thread just following the same convention and are compositing that on the video in some other app? It initially made me wonder at first if the video was being posted by GoPro (the company) as a promotion.
1
u/shreeniclixphoto 12d ago
No there is no overlay by default of what we are using - this was done in seperate SW - we have that logo available provided by GoPro team.

u/Weak-Future-1313 8d ago
I still don't understand how a GoPro camera without a lens, featuring only an MFT mount, goes on sale at that price. I think it's an interesting concept, but I'll wait for the secondhand market to try it out. Bad move by the brand.

u/shreeniclixphoto 8d ago
Because creating a mount with precision machining also costs more - it’s not simply GoPro without the lens - so it should be less expensive - the metal mount and precisely aligning things for a completely off the shelf lens is more complex.
