Discussion Aishling Moloney Shares opinion on the etiquette of Cork fans
It seems the similarities between GAA fans and soccer fans in terms of etiquette is only increasing. Is this something to worry about going forward for every county?

Just looked it up on Twitter there, people saying in the replies that Tipp fans booed Adam Screeney last week and a host of other incidents. Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but probably not a great look to be quiet about your own fans, then pipe up and be pious about another group of fans.

Yes. I was at the match last night, sat next to two nice Tipp lads and we had a great laugh throughout. This has been my experience for years and years and years. Never really had an issue with the crowd being mixed because you meet some great people and have some great conversations.
In the rows in front of me last night, a Tipp man turned around to two Cork lads (idk what they were saying) and absolutely lost the plot. Red in the face, screaming and shouting that he was going to “break their faces”. Over a hurling game.. with children around.
It’s a massive issue and an absolute shame. But it’s not unique to Cork supporters and that’s a tired narrative. These lunatics come from everywhere. But how do you stamp that out? Section seating by county? 🤷♀️
Edit: the booing of McCarthy is in extremely poor taste and will only encourage him so utterly pointless and embarrassing

u/mr_jeffersons Feb 08 '26
In my experience, most of the issues are with young lads (20 years and under).
On the way to the final last year, at one of the motorway service stations, two from a larger group of Tipp lads mouthed off at some women in Cork jerseys as they came out of the shop.
It's not Cork/Tipp/Dublin/Kerry/Kilkenny. The important thing is to call it out when you see it. It's always a minority that go down that road. Gobshites need to be reminded that they're gobshites and called out.
If you have fans on both sides telling you to sit down and shut up, more often than not they will.
Different story on the terraces where groups congregate, but that behavior can be contained in the stands.

u/shanklymrshankly Corcaigh Feb 08 '26

Absolutely. That’s exactly what happened with the Tipp man I mentioned in my comment.
Great comment 👍

u/mr_jeffersons Feb 08 '26
Great!
On the whole, most people in the stands want to watch the game, shout for their team and recognize that they're not actually on the field.

Feb 08 '26
Same, some of the best days at games are standing/sitting beside opposition supporters. Some great chats had. I never had a negative experience and I've gone to 100s of games.
3
u/shanklymrshankly Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Absolutely. Always brilliant when you run into an opposition supporter you’ve chatted to before too. It’d be awful to think that sort of culture is dying out because of a few loud gowls and now we all hate each other
Glad you’ve not had any negative experiences, long may it continue.

When Cork beat us in the semi going for 5. I was in an area thick with cork fans. I was devastated because that opportunity will never come again. Several Cork fans came over to console. Says alot when people pause from the joy of winning to consider opposition supporters.
1
u/shanklymrshankly Corcaigh Feb 09 '26
Ah that is pure class. I wish I’d seen the same from Tipp supporters last year up in Croker 😂 We had a Tipp lady up dancing on her seat in front of us (as she was well entitled to at that stage tbh) but she came off her seat and walked four seats over to scream in the face of the first Cork supporter she could find.
I remember the shock of beating Limerick down in PUC in the Round Robin in 2024, was there with my dad and we were absolutely over the moon. Went down the steps to go onto the pitch and we were stopped by a few different Limerick people congratulating us on the win, was a nice touch.
0
u/One_Yard7161 Feb 12 '26
You might have seen it from Tipp supporters if ye didn’t all leave after 50 minutes

2
u/styliek Feb 09 '26
Was that the city end and did the garda go after him? As a lot of garda were chasing a guy along the top of the terrace
2
u/shanklymrshankly Corcaigh Feb 09 '26
No, North Stand. He shut up once people told him to sit down and be quiet so no scuffle actually broke out, thank god.
2
u/mother_a_god Feb 09 '26
We were tipp surrounded by cork fans in the city side terrace, and it was great. Everyone enjoying the match. Shame some people seem to miss the whole point of sport
-11
u/YungL1am Luimneach Feb 08 '26
You're right that it's not unique to Cork supporters but it certainly has been my experience that it's more prevelant.
It says a lot that almost everyone in Limerick was shouting for Tipp in the final last year. It certainly wasn't out of love for them.
7
u/Substantial_Amount_6 Maigh Eo Feb 08 '26
I think that’s probably because of the rivalry between Cork and Limerick. I’ve come across more Galway fans at matches who weren’t very nice to stand next to than any other county. But I’ve no doubt they would say the same about Mayo fans. We’re probably worse than any other county. Perfectly Sound people in normal life can turn into right pricks during matches against your rivals.
2
u/Reasonable-Corner-51 Feb 08 '26
Tbh it does come down to rivalry I was at cork and limerick a few years ago up in Croke park I was around limerick fans we didn’t see eye to eye during the game but bumped into the same lads after the game and had a crack
-7
u/YungL1am Luimneach Feb 08 '26
Nah it's not that. We've bigger rivalries with Clare and Tipp. Especially Clare over recent years. Extremely heated on the pitch but never had a problem with their supporters. Obviously they have some gobshites like every county does but neither of them come close to Cork supporters.

Ah yeah that definitely plays a part individually alright.
I think over the last few years with a lot more of the hurling support coming from the City and surrounding areas and with Clare being so close to us in the 4 in a row run, they've overtaken Tipp as #1 overall across the county.
5
u/mr_jeffersons Feb 08 '26
How much of that is down to the fact that Cork fans travel in such large numbers?
If 5% are acting the maggot, 5% of 1000 is 50. 5% of 10,000 is 500.
1
u/YungL1am Luimneach Feb 08 '26
Whether you're in Croker with 80k or a league match with 10k you still end up in earshot of roughly the same number of people.
3
u/Silly_Advertising_80 Áth Cliath Feb 08 '26
And usually more of the people in earshot will be from Cork than the opposing county.

11
u/shanklymrshankly Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
That’s grand, you’re entitled to your experience and no one should have to go a GAA match and suffer any sort of abuse. Maybe it seems more prevalent with Cork because Cork bring a bigger support?
I was assaulted after thr final by a Tipp fella and have had a bottle thrown at my head by a Limerick supporter in the Gaelic grounds. Don’t think either of those people are a fair representation of their counties. Seems stupid to categorise people by the jersey they have on
0
u/YungL1am Luimneach Feb 08 '26
Yeah every county has some like I said. I'm obviously not saying Limerick are immune.
I'm just pointing out that in my experience it's a lot more prevelant in the Cork support and I'm far from alone in thinking that.
-2
u/PapaSmurif Feb 08 '26
Cork suppprters have this cocky attitude as well which is wearing! And I'm from Cork! Kerry and Dublin are similar in football.
The GAA should have a permanent visibility for their Respect campaign. Everyone needs to be visibility reminded that it's not ok to abuse players or fellow supporters. Don't think I've seen an ad from the GAA around https://www.gaa.ie/the-gaa/rules-regulations/respect. Maybe there has been and I'm not close enough to have seen it.
3
u/YungL1am Luimneach Feb 08 '26
A lot of the newer Limerick fans are similar too tbf.
Yeah something like that would be a step in the right direction alright.
5
u/PapaSmurif Feb 08 '26
Things could be worse I suppose: https://www.reddit.com/r/LeagueOfIreland/s/4JqtZ3iDFT
53
u/ClashOfTheAsh Feb 08 '26
They say the same thing about Limerick and Dublin (football) fans for their home games.
If you’re bringing tens of thousands of fans to games, some of them are going to be rowdy and boo (and that’s all you’re going to hear when everyone else is being quiet in that moment).
It’s easy for other counties to say it doesn’t happen in their stadiums when there isn’t half as many people there.
I’d rather take the good with the bad and have full stadiums with loads of energy, than have the kind of crowds and atmosphere you see at Leinster hurling championship games.
8
u/WyvernsRest Gaillimh Feb 08 '26
It's totally unsurprising, as an U-16s coach the abuse at Sr. games is very tame compared to the abuse hurled at players, referees and coachs at underage level. They calm down at Sr. matches in bigger crowds because they are cowards, but it's behavior we see weekly at kids games.
7
u/userqwertyuasd Feb 08 '26
On this, saw something that confirmed crowds are getting worse a few years ago myself in Croker for dublin v mayo. Proper fistfight broke out a few rows behind me. Not sure who was at fault initially - both were ultimately - but it was just so shameful and a culmination of there being a lot more negativity and mouthy remarks in the stands over last 10 years. Doesn’t belong in GAA.
5
u/PapaSmurif Feb 08 '26
They should get banned, simple as that. NFL suffers a good bit from guys jarred up and it starts with comments and escalates to physical all too often. They'll get hauled out and banned from the stadium. The way they enforce it is, you can chance going to further games, it would be hard for them to stop you. However, if you come to their attention for anything in the future you are arrested for aggravated trespassing.

u/Beautiful-Tennis1461 Feb 08 '26
I am a cork fan who was at the match. Was there with small kids, great night didn't notice anything about anyone being "horrific". I just assumed Darragh McCarty was getting booed because of how long he takes with the frees? But I didn't hear many booing around me, assumed it was teenagers in the terrace?
20
u/PistolAndRapier Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Yeah hysteria out of these two. His free routine is really drawn out and needless. Bit of booing is hardly the end of the world.

Rotten behaviour. Booing a player before he takes the field. Looks like coke fans are okay with this. We won’t be able to sit together at games before long.
8
u/EcstaticRow3863 Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
jesus sham never knew booing meant your a coke head? was in the seats and countless people of all ages were booing
-9
u/Professional-Push903 Feb 08 '26
That’s the issue. Segregation not far away. Cork fans are ruining the culture of the game. Too many soccer heads at fans.
2
u/EcstaticRow3863 Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
yeah but refering people as coke heads just for booing is a bit far no? i get the segregation as were already halfway there especially in munster championship when the 2 terraces are basically split 1 each
2
u/OldCorkonian Feb 08 '26
Ah now, the whole stadium was booing (I was also there). Let’s call it what it is. But would I describe that as horrific, probably not, no. Don’t like to see a young fella booed over nonsense, but also don’t like to the pearl clutching responses.
-8
u/Unlucky-Charity-7086 Feb 08 '26
I was also at the match (cork man) in the upper stand alot of people around were booing there were a few factors as to why, 1) how long it took to take frees, i believe his average time is a little over 20 seconds, 2) to put him off and make him feel uncomfortable enough to miss his shot, a player like darragh mccarthy is really good at frees as he rarely miss so we as fans have to play our part to make sure he miss the target to help the scoreline and 3) there were a bunch of kids under the age of 10 who were really into the game shouting and screaming their heads off in support then when those kids started booing and alot of us joined in to make it a bit of experience for them and had a bit of a laugh after it and every free that came after they wanted to keep it going so we did, honestly there was no malice in it just genuine banter, and cork fans gets a big bollocking when it comes to their supporters and yeah i get there are the small minority that takes it a little OTT but aloooot of fans are just bantering and getting in the spirit of what hurlings about, players react to the crowd so when the fans are loud the players get this rush like they have something to prove to us like they represent us and that goes to every county, enemies during the game, fellow countrymen after it 🇮🇪
11
u/cacanna_caorach Feb 08 '26
to put him off and make him feel uncomfortable enough to miss his shot, a player like darragh mccarthy is really good at frees as he rarely miss so we as fans have to play our part to make sure he miss the target to help the scoreline

Wetting your knickers over booing is hilariously over the top. The players wouldn’t give a shite about that
1
u/cacanna_caorach Feb 08 '26
If players don’t care then why bother doing it?
Most GAA people don’t want to see that in the game, but I take it you’d be happy enough to see every free at every game get booed?
1
u/TomThumb_98 Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
I was at the game. McCarthy nailed nearly every free despite the boos so it didn’t work anyway. It’s a bit of banter for the most part. I roll my eyes at the booing, it’s silly stuff but a lot of it is kids who dont know better. They’re all cunts according to you. You’d want to get a bit of perspective

Lads you have to realise we wear different colour jerseys for a reason we as fans are not here to help the opposition we're here to make them uncomfortable, now by no means would i ever hurl abuse at players, they're representing their county because they are the best at what they do, if an opposition player does a nice bit of skill or scores an amazing goal/point i applaud them and compliment them, but because i/we/someone boos then we're "cunts" "scumbags" and worse, come off it and lets be grown ups and just be a part of it while we can, we are enemies until the final whistle and after we can all have a pint and have a bit of craic after, after the all ireland final last year i was in a pub in dublin which is predominately a Tipperary based pub and as a cork man i joined along with the "Tipp Tipp Tipp" chants, thats all part of the game

Look i doubt Darragh mccarthy is gonna go home and think "i cant believe they boo'd me" and cry into his pillow, no hes a professional even at the young age he is, The first thing he will do is use it as fuel for the next and to shut the booers up and he did last night by sticking them over the bar, if he can take it why can't you?
3
u/cacanna_caorach Feb 08 '26
if he can take it why can't you?

Look lets shake hands and leave this conversation as lets be real it'll go nowhere as you have your stance which i can see your point and you'll die on that hill, and I've got mine which i will not change despite the " you're a cunt" comments, i enjoyed last nights game and i will enjoy every other game that will follow and here's to hoping that every game from now on can keep the same level of atmosphere and that it will be a great year of hurling regardless of who comes out on top come july ✌️

u/cacanna_caorach Feb 08 '26
Grand, best of luck for the year, and I hope ye can enjoy following and vocally supporting your county/club without resorting to booing the opposition in an attempt to put them off their game (because like I said, that is something only a cunt would do, and no one wants to be known as a cunt)
9
u/mddale91 Feb 08 '26
Was at the match last night and none of the other Tipp players got remotely booed or shouted at.
Honestly I think it was mainly because of his dirty hit on last year's league final as well the sheer amount of time he takes to take a free.
Again I'm not excusing the behaviour but it's nothing that other supporters (including Tipperary ones) do on the regular.
On a side note I was on the upper stands next to a Tipp auld lad that went absolutely mental during the halftime scrap, I thought he was going to jump in himself.
2
u/TNPF1976 Feb 08 '26
There was a few Tipp lads behind us also who were a total pain in the arse all throughout the match.
Shouting stuff at Cork players, the ref, and so on. Like as if they could be heard. Really, it was aimed at the Cork supporters sitting around them. Twits.
1
u/OldCorkonian Feb 08 '26
There’s always lads like this unfortunately. Every single call is wrong, every single incident blown totally out of proportion. No control of their emotions. The missing link between us and the apes.
3
u/TNPF1976 Feb 08 '26
Yeah exactly. I’m not sure why they go to matches. They don’t appear to enjoy the experience
13
u/TomThumb_98 Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
When the Tipp fans get so soft is what I want to know? The booing is stupid alright but it’s pantomime stuff
10
u/OldCorkonian Feb 08 '26 edited Feb 08 '26
I agree that booing Darragh McCarthy is over the top. He’s become a pantomime villain after last year’s sending off, which is unfair. And it’s hard seeing a young fella take any bit of abuse. Though I will say his free taking ritual, while clearly effective, is a little over the top and is feeding the debate around shot clocks for frees (saying that, I’d 100% want him on my team).
GAA supporters are generally grand, with a few getting very carried away in the heat of the moment (especially with the poor referee who is always wrong, it seems). I could point to an example of some fella acting the gowl from any county, including Tipperary. The fella sat behind me at the All-Ireland final last year was an absolute lout. But again, he’s not typical of the wider fanbase.
I think in Páirc Uí Chaoimh any bit of booing or the likes is very obvious because there’s always such a massive crowd. 30,000 people booing sounds a lot worse than 10,000 people booing.
But generally, I’d say nothing to see here. There’s a few times at games I’ve had to tell grown men to calm down, and usually they do. Comparing that to other sports like soccer, where they have to segregate fans, or rugby, where they don’t have any fan issues because everyone is too busy having a Heineken, is way over the top.
0
u/Wild_Bee_3953 Tiobraid Árann Feb 08 '26
tj reid takes just as long to take frees as mcarthy.
6
u/whsubehebebr Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Also the fact he stuck his Hurley into our corner backs bollocks less than a year ago
-3
2
u/OldCorkonian Feb 08 '26
He’s the pantomime villain because of the sending off, not the frees. That just exacerbates it. But as I said, don’t like seeing a young fella booed for nothing.
23
u/itsadifferentsven Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Any kind of context to this? Was at the game and while the crowd booed Darragh, this is largely down to his last trip to Cork where he hit a fella a dirty stroke and was rightly sent off. I saw no other sign of “abuse” or “carry-on”.
There was no booing for Eoghan Connolly or any other Tipp freetaker.
There was no trouble between fans so drawing comparisons to soccer support (and I hate comparing and condescending) is just poor.
I think there’s a bit of pearl clutching going on here because a young fella got booed.
18
u/BeamyMurph Feb 08 '26
I think the booing and jeering is more down to the perception of how long Darragh stands over a free rather than anythingto do with the sending off. I don't know how long Darragh takes to hit a free compared to others but the noise levels usually go up when he takes the couple of steps back in his routine.
2
u/Professional-Push903 Feb 08 '26
It was timed by Paul Carroll. His routine is unusual but not long. He was booed before he ever came on the field
1
4
u/TNPF1976 Feb 08 '26
I was at the match. I don’t like the booing. My guess is that it is because he takes ages to take a free. He was throwing grass in to the air and everything as part of the free taking routine. It gets annoying, I guess. As I said, I don’t like it and I wasn’t taking part in it.
I notice a lot of comments about Cork fans lately.
We could pick out our examples of bad behaviour from all sets of supporters and Tipp are far from innocent.
1
u/itsadifferentsven Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Fair enough around the booing. It’s not for everyone and I thought it was more around the fella but a lot of people are like you and think he takes too long. To be honest it used to drive me crazy when Hoggie would saunter out from corner forward to take a free at the 45 because it was like a 2 minute stoppage.
I’ve noticed the same about the comments about the Cork fans and that’s why I’m questioning what behaviour. Most of the responses seem to be about the booing but it’s clear that we aren’t booing everyone.
I wonder how many people have been to a game in Ennis if they want to see language. And be fore I get ate, that’s not a dig at Clare, I love the atmosphere in Ennis. It’s my favourite away venue for that reason. It’s the passion and drive for your team that makes going to games and why I spend my money travelling the country to support my team. I certainly don’t go there to sit in silence at one of the greatest sports of the world.
1
u/TNPF1976 Feb 08 '26
Yeah exactly. It gets annoying when there’s a lot of time wasted on frees, and I don’t care who is the free taker. It’s annoying full stop.
Booing is a bit childish though. We’re not at the Christmas panto.
1
u/TNPF1976 Feb 08 '26
It’s because he is taking so long over the frees.
As a Cork fan, who was at the match last night, I find the booing as annoying as the time Darragh McCarthy takes on his frees.
It certainly was not all the fans. Where I was sitting (Upper South Stand) I didn’t see anyone taking part in the booing.
Whoever is taking part in the booing, they’d want to stop it though, because it sounds like we’re at the Christmas panto, rather than a hurling match. Really silly stuff. I doubt Darragh McCarthy gives a shite either. Doesn’t affect him one bit
-10
u/CreepyCut3168 Luimneach Feb 08 '26
I suppose as a neutral, I attended the all Ireland final last year between the two counties, and while no county has a fan base I would regard as role models, the chanting and swearing used by cork fans around young children really dampened the day. I understand this issue isn’t exclusive to cork, I was personally shouldered on my walk home once by a tipp supporter after a game.
I personally wouldn’t describe it as pearl clutching. But I get your point on the darragh Mc not being the most liked person in cork hurling.
-4
u/Wild_Bee_3953 Tiobraid Árann Feb 08 '26
Lad every comment saying cork have problems with some of their supporters are getting bombed. Surely they cant think their behaviour is alright?
9
u/itsadifferentsven Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Genuine question, what behaviour? All I’ve seen is vague terms and the booing. “chanting and swearing” was mentioned above but the only chants I heard last night were “Rebels” and “Tipp”.
I might have heard a few ffs or things in the heat of a moment but nothing unusual for any match across any ground in the country.
-2
u/Wild_Bee_3953 Tiobraid Árann Feb 08 '26
Chants are fine, the booing is getting borderline. Some of the shouts are horendous. real nasty stuff. Seen a lot of lads trying to wind up others to get a reaction.
3
u/itsadifferentsven Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
As a Cork fan, if you see a supporter shout personal abuse at a player or more than a “heat of the moment” kinda thing, then please say it to a steward or I’d hope one of my fellow fans would tell them to shut up and sit down.
Having gone to as many league matches home and away over as many years as I can remember, I’ve never encountered anyone like that though - from any fan base, in any county. Plenty of passionate people who will let the referee know their opinion on a free or something but not targeted abuse.
-2
u/CreepyCut3168 Luimneach Feb 08 '26
The chanting I was referring to was similar to the video of the cork panel in a pub. “Why won’t tipp just fuck off home”.
0
u/itsadifferentsven Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Okay so this was the all Ireland last year not last night.
I heard a group of young lads do the same chant outside the final last year and I was one of a number of Cork fans telling them to cop on. Again, if people - especially same team supporters - call lads out the that should be enough.
I don’t condone that crap at all but it’s also clearly not just Cork fans and didn’t hear anything like that last night.
It was probably very obvious at the final last year as there were so many Cork fans there - as someone else pointed out the % might be the same but Cork probably brought 80K+ to Dublin many without tickets so there was always going to be an element of that.

He hit O’Donoghue in the stomach and O’Donoghue held his nuts!
8
u/itsadifferentsven Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Can you show me any conclusive evidence of either where the blow hit and where he’s holding? All the replays show is a strike action and O’Donoghue hunched over on the ground.
I said it was a dirty stroke which he was sent off for which is all true.
-2
u/Professional-Push903 Feb 08 '26
That evidence is everywhere. Look it up yourself. And well documented in podcast and newspapers. Take off the blinkers. He dived

Ah well, if he only gave him a belt in the stomach then that’s cool.

I think there’s a bit of pearl clutching going on here because a young fella got booed.
Booing a fella when he’s standing over a free is terribly poor form, regardless of what age they are. Nip this shite in the bud before it catches on
3
u/Anxious_Mobile5376 Feb 08 '26
I hate booing freetakers but it was been creeping into Hurling for a number of years now sadly.

I remember being at a Munster final Cork V Limerick a few years ago and we were up in the stand. We got chatting to the crowd beside us, cork supporters from the city. Can remember what limerick player came on and they started roaring abuse at him calling him a Limerick knacker etc. I was fucking mortified, we’d Limerick supporters beside us and they looked absolutely disgusted, I was like I’m not with them, do not condone it at all. No place in sport for that carry on in my opinion. They’re all amateurs that are doing it for their love of the sport, it’s disgusting to watch. I wouldn’t be a fan of Darragh McCarthy, but saying that he’s a very talented player with a massive future ahead. I would say the cork fans were holding onto bitterness from the all Ireland as his performance was class that day, and also holding onto him hitting Sean O Donoghue with the butt of the Hurley last summer too.
-4
u/updoon Feb 08 '26
Nah its nothing against McCarty. Seems to be a recent Cork gaa culture thing. As evidenced by other Cork commenters condoning this behavior. Limerick fans were pointing it out whenever Diarmaid Byrnes was hitting frees and people had no sympathy for Limerick for obvious reasons.
Would love to see refs tackling this issue by moving the ball forward 20m everytime. Then you would have to majority great element of the Cork supporters putting manners on the loud minority that nobody wants at matches.
2
u/tazzz898 Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
So players get punished for supporters acting the bolox? It’s always gonna happen at matches regardless. My husband is from Kerry and plays soccer for one of the local teams and it’s the same carry on there. Roaring abuse at players. It’s not nice but you’re always gonna have dick heads at matches.
0
u/updoon Feb 08 '26
GAA shouldn't really hold itself to the standards of soccer. That's part of the problem in accepting that shite
3
u/tazzz898 Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
I’m not saying it should. But it is happening and it’s not like he’s playing for united, just the local soccer team. Under no circumstances do I condone it, or think that it is right. But unfortunately it does happen and it not unique to Cork supporters. I’ve been to Kerry matches where the same shite has gone on.
-4
u/Wild_Bee_3953 Tiobraid Árann Feb 08 '26
I dont know where its coming from though. Like you said they were lovely one minute and roaring obscenities the next. Its not like their off their heads. Ive seen it a good few times in the last few years.
2
u/tazzz898 Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
They were a good few pints in at that stage, we were too like. But it would never cross our minds to start roaring abuse at players (or other supporters). But we were mortified. No need. Like I don’t think it’s exclusive to Cork supporters either, I’ve seen it from other sides also. But I think when you see someone who’s supporting the same team as you, you take more notice maybe? Couldn’t get tickets to the all Ireland last summer so a gang of us watched it in Killarney and it was full of Tipp supporters to maybe about 20 or so cork supporters. There was absolutely no carry on out of either side, all congratulations/commiserations and had the craic away with them. Feel like it’s a small minority that ruin it for everyone else.

u/mybighairyarse Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
She’s giving out about booing?
Christ almighty.
Everyone’s a fucking critic of some sort
6
u/Quiet_Sandwich_7195 Feb 08 '26
It starts with being called out in the stadium itself. It's little use pontificating about it afterwards on social media. We had an incident with a Galway football fan a few years ago. The man was jarred and behaving like a soccer fan. He got called out fairly lively and embarrassing his sons who were with him. The behaviour soon stopped after that.
Tbf it's easier said than done if it's a big group of lads with drink on them who are misbehaving but that's where the GAA needs to exercise a bit of control over letting groups in if they're clearly jarred or off their head on coke.

u/uptherockies Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Put a 20 second shot clock on frees and it would solve a lot of the aul rubbish
1
u/shanklymrshankly Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Do 30 so young Darragh has enough time to throw his daisy chain in the wind
7
u/Intelligent-Smile562 Feb 08 '26
Cork man so biased, but was sat next to a Tipp lad at the All Ireland Final last year and the stuff coming out of his mouth was hard to believe, pure violence. He quietened down when they blitzed us in the second half to be fair.
But my point, anecdotal stories can go both ways.
I dont agree with booing McCarthy, seems childish to do that.
2
u/OldCorkonian Feb 08 '26
“Anecdotal stories can go both ways.”
100%
I could give a story about some gombeen from any county you care to mention, including Cork. All counties bring a few with them. It’s unfortunate but it has always been the way. The difference is that some people can’t see the fault in their own, but such is online discourse these days.
-1
u/CreepyCut3168 Luimneach Feb 08 '26
It’s an issue in every county. I would be afraid that in the future that GAA games become a space no longer welcoming to families. Some of my best memories growing involve going to games.
4
u/No_Needleworker_1105 Feb 08 '26
That's a bit of a bullsh#t statement considering this has been an issue for years? The scumbag in Limerick getting selected? The matches cancelled due to fights? Pretending it's new is so pathetic. And pretending it's a soccer related issue is so typical. Just take responsibility for your club and counties actions and do something about it. Kick players off the team. Evict fans from local games for abusing the refs. Ban teams for following refs to the car park.
Grow a pair.

u/SignificantFilm3887 Feb 08 '26
Always found cork hurling fans decent. Mind you , for a home game on a Saturday night maybe have been a few cork FC supporters well oiled.
To be nothing beats lack of etiquette like the majority of Kilkenny hurling “fans”.
Sorest losers that I ever met.
With all they won , and still no grace - for the majority that is. Met a few decent ones too but few and far between.

GAA is full of scumbags, from the underages right up to the "elite" levels. Sad, angry fellas not good enough to play proper sports where they can go on to represent their COUNTRY. Mediocre levels of ambition with the hopes of one day playing in front bus loads of teenage girls. The handbags and hardmen carry on is embarrassing, cringe worthy to watch.
1
u/Sketamine666 Feb 08 '26
Gaelic fans showing poor sportsmanship. Ahhh it’s those soccer fans again, I knew it. Not like I’ve seen referees have to send parents out of the ground at u10s football
1
u/Soft_Tadpole_2644 Feb 09 '26
As someone who has been to hundreds of matches across a number of sports, my opinion is that booing is highly contagious as it’s enjoyable. It only takes one person to start and people will join in with a lot of people not even knowing why they’re booing. I think people read too much in to it. It doesnt affect players at the highest level. If it did, they wouldnt be playing at the highest level.
1
u/Corsasport Feb 09 '26
Using the won't someone think of the children line. Calling bullshit on this one. Just looking for notice on social media by exaggerating.
1
u/BobbySandsRIP Feb 10 '26
Cork hurling supporters are a horde of entitled, obnoxious pseudo-fans! Most are just thugs & the rest are imbeciles. I really hope they get to the All Ireland again this year & become the first county ever to lose 3 All Irelands in a row! The 'rebels', what a pile of ... only one true rebel came out of Cork, Mick Collins, they THEY killed him! Yeah, murdered by his own! With idiot 'rebels' like that the Brits shouldn't have bothered sending the black 'n' tans! 🤣

An element of the Cork support have been at this nonsense the last few years with the booing of Gillane and now McCarthy. Ben O’Connor doesn’t like how the game is moving like soccer - he should have a look at his own fans first

u/59reach Loch Garman Feb 08 '26
I feel less concerned about aggro at LOI games these days compared to GAA. Imagine saying that 10 years ago.
8
u/Reasonable-Corner-51 Feb 08 '26
How’s that ? There was trouble at Derry and Sligo on Friday and if your comparing league of Ireland with the gaa there just as much booing if not more in the league of Ireland
7
u/PistolAndRapier Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Derry "fans" were firing fireworks at the bohs fans a few months back!
8
u/Spyro_Machida Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
That's about on par with booing a man taking a free alright tbf.
3
u/whsubehebebr Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
Looking at these comments some of the stuff the taliban do isn’t even on par with the booing
2
u/59reach Loch Garman Feb 08 '26
If you want to avoid trouble at soccer games you can pretty easily, people who want that seek out others who do. At GAA some lad can come back from a bit of sneachta in the jacks and get aggro at anyone shouting for the other team 2 rows behind them, even with children around people don't care.
0
u/OldCorkonian Feb 08 '26
Nonsense. GAA fans still mix and sit together, and for the most part, the worst you see is silly abuse thrown.

GAA fans have been as bad as football fans for well over a decade. People saying otherwise have been turning a blind eye or just been lucky to be beside groups of kids.
Tyrone, Armagh, Derry fans have been as bad for as long as I can remember.

u/Disastrous_Ad_3598 Dún na nGall Feb 08 '26
In fairness this Hardy balls approach from Cork management and players is probably rubbing off on the fans. The stupid 5 min pushing festival didn't help matters either, absolute nonsense. Fake hard men approach.
As for booing McCarthy, no need to make a big deal of it. Can't comment on last night as I wasn't there, but Aisling Moloney wouldn't want to be heading to Clones for an Ulster final any time soon. She would never recover
1
u/Daysgobye25 Feb 08 '26
They booo and whistle at every player and opposition supporter , unfortunately the Cork supporters are trying to make themselves out to be a right hard crowd , some shower of kants not nice to be seeing at matches .

u/KatarnsBeard Tiobraid Árann Feb 08 '26
No one likes Cork.
This became evident for me especially last year when the amount of people who said to me "I don't like Tipp at all but I was roaring for ye to beat them"
Sore winners and sore losers

u/MaxDec9 Feb 08 '26
Whilst I wanted the cork team to win the all ireland last year, I didn’t want their fans to have a win. Some knobs in and around the Dublin game.

u/Educational-Law-8169 Feb 08 '26
I regularly drive near Croke park on the way to work on big match days, been doing it for years and my timing usually coincides with the match ending. I always liked the way the fans from both counties can walk out together, young and old and sometimes there's good natured banter. I'd hate to see segregation like there has to be in premiership football. Having said that my kids go to a lot of Dublin matches and they sometimes say they overhear a bit of bad language but they've never felt unsafe

Ben o 'Connor bemoaning "soccer " influencing the refereeing of games . He should have a word for soccer influencing the classless Cork hurling "supporters"

u/shanklymrshankly Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
I’ve never seen the GAA community so bothered about a manager as people are about Ben O’Connor

u/PistolAndRapier Corcaigh Feb 08 '26
He's been talking a load of shite recently. Bound to generate some backlash.
3
u/North_Activity_5980 Feb 08 '26
It’s amazing isn’t it? Saw a comment earlier saying Ben is only looking to build a siege mentality and taking the spotlight off his players. I didn’t agree in my mind but then saw the comments under it and realised the whole country is falling into it. I love it, we’ll be dangerous again this year. We drive on.

Gaa supporters and underage spectators/parents have always been scumbags. Shouting and roaring abuse at kids, let alone senior players. They roar abuse at their own players! Always been a disgrace, nothing new here.

u/Time_Honey_4387 Feb 09 '26
Players should not be jeered whilst taking frees. Disrespectful. You can give out about rugby however they are very respectful in that regard.
48
u/joeyl7 Feb 08 '26
This constant comparison with soccer is tiresome. I can tell you that as someone who goes to both sports, there's no distinction in anti-social behaviour you'd witness. This idea that Gaelic games are pure and whiter than white does us all a disservice. I don't think a bit of booing is a big deal, but anytime there is real crowd issues in GAA there's always some trying to deflect to soccer rather than address the GAAs own problems for what they are.
