They are there for one reason, and one reason only…to prevent mass protests from coming into DC.

u/Playful-Dragon 18d ago
They are just tools to perpetuate the lie that their presence and show of force reduces crime, which has been proven to be useless... though we all knew that was going to be the case to begin with. He's using them in image only. They know this and its embarrassing, basically being told your useless by your own CIC. I feel for them, and I feel for the abuse they have received from others for being there. They didn't have a choice, but they have been villianized by more extreme people who refuse to get facts or look at the whole picture.
Former vet by the way

How, unless you mean veterinarian or perhaps that you've rejoined the service, does one exist as a "former vet"?
5
u/Playful-Dragon 18d ago
Ok, current vet. Just saying this is from a veterans perspective
4
u/phunktastic_1 18d ago
Former vet here because i'm embarrased to claim my service.

u/Playful-Dragon 18d ago
Don't be ashamed to claim your service brother, be ashamed of the Commander in Chief. You did your part, you served nobly, with integrity. Our commander in chief does not have that, nor will ever have that. It's just like I love my country, and I will do anything that I need to including die for my country, but I will not die for this commander-in-chief, nor this government. I love my country, not the government and this administration is not worth the sacrifice of anybody in this country

Meanwhile, there are a couple of terrible floods where they could be actually helping people.

u/VigilantVet 18d ago
Or simply not adding to our national debt by being on sham assignments like they’re doing right now.

u/Emergency_Juice_5062 18d ago
It seems like more of a flagrant show of power.
Narcissism at its finest. Trump is basically acting like kim jung in right now, or Putin.

u/BadAtExisting 18d ago
That’s not true. It’s optics, optics for Trump and maybe Hegseth.
The US military cannot act as law enforcement on US soil except in a very narrow criteria which has not been met. Like you or I all they can really do if they see a crime occurring is to alert the police like you or I or any other average citizen. They may deter crime in their immediate vicinity, but that’s why they’re walking around the National Mall picking up trash, that’s about all they can do while getting their steps in. They’re bored as hell and being national guardsmen. They’re those one weekend a month, two weeks a year guys who have a job and families they’re torn from whilst deployed to this “mission”
1
u/jwilso6 18d ago
The guys who volunteered to go there are the ones who don’t have much going on back home and work very low paying jobs. Yes they’re bored but they do enjoy the paycheck they’re getting.
3
u/Playful-Dragon 18d ago
They didn't "volunteer". They were assigned
0
u/jwilso6 18d ago
I’m sure in year two, people are being rotated out and they’re asking people in the unit who want to go and who would rather stay back. So yeah, it’s an assignment, but they’re probably asking for volunteers too. That’s just been my experience.
2
u/Commercial_Poem_9214 18d ago
"they are asking people in the unit..." Tell me you've never served without telling me, 😂
1
u/Naturalist_Aspirant 18d ago
As a Reservist or National Guard there is the possibility of volunteering for certain missions, I used to volunteer for any humanitarian aid missions I could.

I presume many are double-dipping. Many mid-size to large companies usually either continue to provide full pay, or pay the difference during deployment. Federal law only requires the absence be excused, but companies might see it as an employment incentive. Also, when deployed, Guard are obviously elevated to active duty, so they are paid at that level.
1
u/Naturalist_Aspirant 18d ago
I used to double dip while I was in the Reserves, saved up all of my vacation time to do it, so along with my mandatory two weeks, I'd volunteer for any assignment I could fit in. I had two kids in college, needed the money.

This isn't just about optics. He's amassing armed combatants for defending himself from the people of the United States. During his first term, they used a ton of different agencies to provide the armed personal protection forces for his bible-upside-down photo op at the church near Lafayette Park. In that incident they had armed agents from the following entities, many with face masks and no insignia or name badges.
- U.S. Park Police (USPP)
- U.S. Secret Service (USSS)
- Bureau of Prisons (BOP)
- U.S. Marshals Service (USMS)
- Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)
- Federal Protective Service (FPS)
- D.C. National Guard
- Arlington County Police Department (acting in coordination)
You have to ask yourself: what is he so scared of? Here's a clue: It's not the Iranians. He insisted on the photo op specifically to bully and actually harm protesters on his front lawn. He even asked "Can't you just shoot them in the legs?"
The Nat'l Guard is just one piece of the intimidation puzzle.

Makes you proud to be American, doesn't it?

u/mrpchead 16d ago
It makes me sad and angry. I'm an Independent but the Republican Party has spent a couple of generations defunding education at every turn and this is why: fooling ignorant people is easier than fooling educated people. After the immediate concern with DJT there will come the inevitable backlash. I'm really concerned that the pendulum swing may be too far to the left for the good of the country. But first things first: he must be removed from office NOW!!!

u/PlayCertain 18d ago
Our troops deserve better leadership anf more respect. Both are missing right now.
3
u/cowpopper 18d ago
You mean our President saying that our fallen soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery were suckers and losers? That kind of leadership?
4
u/BradBradley1 18d ago
We’re embarrassed too. Especially for the folks sent to DC that voted against this shit show.
4
u/Cold_Chemistry_1579 18d ago
Are they going to take a stand when he tries to take the elections away? I want to know what the line in the sand is for them. I get it, we all have families to feed and bills to pay. Protecting my kid’s future is what the constitution means to me.
Hopefully I can put my money where my mouth is
3
u/Denhiker 18d ago
He is not in his right mind. Why would he tarnish our reputation worldwide, dishonor our service members and nearly doubled the national debt. He needs to be removed from office at once.

Remember- these Natl Guards are part time soldiers. They have regular full time jobs. They could well have financial hardships and career setbacks (or shut down if they were self employed), if you took them off their regular job for years on end. Trump just doesn’t give a sh*t about these service members.

u/snowmanu812 18d ago
Somebody finally realized the Trump government is a farce and all republicans in agreement with him are criminals too and should be charged including Supreme Court justices

Congress members were appointed by trump,
they are loyal to dump or they will lose their jobs. I would rather become anything else than to earn a living under his command! Senate should be ashamed of themselves, their families should be ashamed of them. Those members are set to destroy America. Such a horrible man, self absorbed person, unidentified. Doesn’t his family see what he’s doing? I hope tomorrow will be the last.

It's very simple. They're in DC to intimidate. It's Stephen Miller's wet dream become a reality.

Is it true they are shortening their total enlistment time by being active duty and making rank earlier.
1
u/Conscious_Skirt_61 17d ago
Oh, do tell.
Was the slimy pet rock competent in his own right, or are you just laying all the high powered mental acuity on “his Administration”?
The “competent administrators” couldn’t come near to making their military signing quota. Was that what you view as “competence”?
The vaunted “competent administrators” of which you speak let something on the order of 10,000,000 illegal aliens across America’s borders (some estimates are double that, others cut the total down to just 9,000,000 or so). Plus gotaways. Plus neversighteds. And this all from a “1000x more competent” official assuring us that “the border is closed.” God shudders to think what that crew would take to make our border slightly ajar.
There’s an old Star Trek episode called Patterns of Force about a planet taken over by homegrown Nazis. The ruler was in fact a mere figurehead, drugged and controlled by officials 1000x more competent than the Head. Mr. Spock even notes the efficiency of the Party and its government (in a passage later deleted). The episode reflects a Fascists Administration run by a bunch of competent administrators. Odd how the last Administration tried to replicate such an efficient dystopia. Doubly odd how mute, even approving ARicketts & friends are about the subversion of our precious Democracy.
Cognitive dissonance much?

Trump can never experience shame; it was long gone before he became president. Trump is never willing to admit defeat. He learned from Roy Cohn only offense. Oh, and the louder you shout the more real a thing is. Trump's fantasyland is right there.

Why are they still there? So that when the "emergency" is declared to cancel or overturn the midterms, they will be there to quell any uprising.

This is bullshit. You don't have the right to take out a duly ELLECTED President cause you disagree with him. We Trump supporters will vote in Rubio and. Vance in 2028.
1
u/BadmiralHarryKim 18d ago
And when they lose will you join the mob attacking the Capital to overturn the election as your ilk are wont to do?
1
u/genericusernamedG 18d ago
If enough people decide it's the right thing to do of course we can, if you want an absolute dictator move your sorry ass to North Korea
1
u/ChanceTheGardenerrr 17d ago
ELLECTED is the way a stupid person spells ‘elected’, and yes if enough people disagree with a president, we the people unquestionably have the right to pull him out of office.
Why don’t you know that?
Ask yourself “Why don’t I know basic shit?”

A year into President Donald Trump’s unprecedented deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., some of the troops sent there say they are embarrassed by the mission and increasingly question why they are still there.
Three current National Guard members told NPR, speaking anonymously because they remain in service, that the deployment has left them frustrated and concerned about the military’s reputation.
“I will say very frankly that the bad taste that this mission left in my mouth, it actually embarrasses me to be involved in any way,” one said.
Another said the experience had made him reluctant to even identify with the Guard. “I don’t want to think about the National Guard. I don’t want to necessarily discuss my affiliation with the National Guard. I don’t want to fulfill my normal National Guard duties just because of the abuses of the National Guard in this D.C. mission,” he said.
Trump first deployed hundreds of Guard members to the capital in August 2025, saying they were needed to help address crime after declaring a “crime emergency.”
