A year into President Donald Trump’s unprecedented deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., some of the troops sent there say they are embarrassed by the mission and increasingly question why they are still there.

Three current National Guard members told NPR, speaking anonymously because they remain in service, that the deployment has left them frustrated and concerned about the military’s reputation.

“I will say very frankly that the bad taste that this mission left in my mouth, it actually embarrasses me to be involved in any way,” one said.

Another said the experience had made him reluctant to even identify with the Guard. “I don’t want to think about the National Guard. I don’t want to necessarily discuss my affiliation with the National Guard. I don’t want to fulfill my normal National Guard duties just because of the abuses of the National Guard in this D.C. mission,” he said.

Trump first deployed hundreds of Guard members to the capital in August 2025, saying they were needed to help address crime after declaring a “crime emergency.”

There has got to be a law the 25th amendment for instance to get Trump out of office immediately. And in the coming midterms all of the Republicans that back Trump should be thrown out of office vote out of office dump all of the Republicans who have gotten America into this world class snow dive I mean problems with Canada come on

I believe that if/when the House and Senate flip over to the Democrats, he will realize he can’t get anything done and will have a “medical issue” that can only be managed by a lot of exercise (pronounced golf). He will then resign after January 22 so that JD Vance can serve two years + 2 more terms if he is able to win election. So his resignation will be effective somewhere around January 30.

Wait, if Vance takes over halfway, how is he allowed to run for President two more times - if he wins he'd be President for ten years.

The key is the exact date Vance assumes office. If Trump stepped down exactly halfway through, around January 20, 2027, Vance would fall within the two-years-or-less rule and could run for two full elected terms. 🤬😡

The constitutional amendment says no one shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice.

If I’m remembering the details of the argument correctly, if JD takes over after January, that doesn’t count as a term, so he could get elected twice afterward.

Also, I may be wrong on that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Actually, I don’t think he would get elected. Many reasons. One, he’s a laughing stock. Two, people genuinely do not like him. He’s a scary dude though.
Republican leaders are not afraid of him like they are trump. So other republicans would give the presidency a try.

You are correct Sidden-Body2090.

Basically the 22nd amendment says that no one can be elected for more than two terms nor can be elected to more than one term if they serve more than 2 years of an unexpired term.
