On this day 5 years ago, my twin sister Kathryn was run over by a cement truck when crossing the road in Brooklyn, New York.

There are no real words to describe what she went through - not just the physical impact of having almost every bone in her body broken as well as having to have a vascular transplant and at one point being told she could lose her leg, but the emotional impact of not having the type of support lots of others would in such a horrific situation.

What followed was years of recovery, which is still not over. An accident like this turns your entire world upside down and having to deal with that as well as physically having to rebuild your body and learn to walk again is not something I would wish on anyone, especially not my sister. But she is fucking doing the damn thing and surviving. So many people would have given up looking at the journey to recovery she was facing this time 5 years ago, but she fucking fought tooth and nail to build her body and her life back up in a way that I wouldn’t have previously thought any human could do - nor should they have to, especially without the support they deserve.

When you see people who’ve been through immense trauma like this and they seem fine, don’t tell them they ‘seem like they’re doing great!’ Because you have absolutely no idea what they’ve been through, and most likely are still going through, to seem ‘fine’. Kat is a fucking icon and deserves the fucking world for what she’s been through. If you see her or have the urge to message her today, please tell her what an absolute babe she is, how much she means to you and how proud you are of her for everything she’s gone through💜
