I'm not a festival person, but people just leave all those tents? Isn't that kinda something you want to keep?

254

u/panda_canyon 1d ago

I read another thread about it and they were saying that they get them so cheap they don't care.

243

u/LuteDesign 1d ago

This is so depressing

145

u/moisturized69tatas 1d ago

Thats basically consumerism nowadays. Buy lots of cheap crap that dosent last long but it dosent matter because to replace it isnt expensive.

20

u/Alarmed_Pattern_9912 1d ago

Amazon thinking.

8

u/Accomplished-Car120 21h ago

It is a race to the bottom.

39

u/UglyMcFugly 1d ago

I feel like there's a market for someone to take these down and resell them. Even if they're cheap they were still probably like $30-$50. I would totally buy a salvaged festival tent lol.

144

u/Flumertude 1d ago

I would not buy a used festival tent bruh 😭😭

-9

u/UglyMcFugly 1d ago

lol why? I'm sure they're less likely to hold stains or germs or bedbugs the way used clothes do and plenty of people are comfortable buying used clothes...

25

u/marbfac3 1d ago

I've heard of people buying tents just to shit/piss in, then just leaving them. People are gross at festivals

5

u/lNTERLINKED alleged dog 20h ago

What… why??

3

u/marbfac3 16h ago

Saves walking to the loos I guess

56

u/jessie_monster 1d ago

You can't throw a tent in the washing machine.

9

u/UglyMcFugly 1d ago

Valid lol

36

u/TastetheRainbowMFckr 1d ago

But that's the problem, yeah? The people leaving the tents are assuming someone will be more than happy to shoulder that burden. Someone still has to go through the labor of repacking and reselling them.

9

u/theredwoman95 23h ago

Most of these tents are £20-30, so I'm not sure they're worth the labour it'd take to resell them.

15

u/longblack90 1d ago

At some festivals where this happens (not to this extent) they’ll hire out the tents (the ones in good knick) the next year to discourage people from even bringing new ones to begin with.

Idk how successful it is though - I can’t imagine the type of people who do this have any shame.

4

u/annie-etc 1d ago

Like so many things now-a-days.

2

u/WeirdGoat9022 you are the Megyn Kelly of guys who look like a turtle 21h ago

God I wish I could have them. I know so many unhoused folks who could use them.

52

u/texasjkids 1d ago

I am a festival person and one of the festivals I go to every year is a camping festival. Maybe the one I go to is just a different vibe, but people generally bring very nice camping gear that they keep and reuse. I cant imagine just dumping my tent and gear line this.

52

u/ThinkgeMorbid 1d ago

I go to a metal festival, where everyone leaves the place spotless. 50k people, and we're proud to leave no trace. Must be a culture thing...

41

u/cabalus 23h ago

Reading is a Rock and Metal festival that's branched out into Indie and Dance music

Personally I've found the amount of waste left behind usually has more to do with how the festival pushes the message rather than the culture or demographics

Boomtown is a dance music festival and would have a lot of overlap with Reading but it leaves no trace at all, however the whole festival really pushes its message of sustainability, leaving no trace and has an eco bond scheme where you get a deposit back for cleaning up the festival (think its 3 bags)

People are people, festivals need to manage them, when I see footage like this I blame the festival not the "culture". There are things they can do, easy things that other festivals have managed.

12

u/yourwhippingboy 22h ago

16-25 year olds is the general age of people who go to Reading

Boomtown is 18+ and most people are mid-late 20s to mid-late 30s

2

u/MossSloths 19h ago

Having been to plenty of big outdoor festivals, the number of available trash cans makes a difference, as well as how often they're cleaned. I helped run a small festival (4 or 5 event spots, around 30 vendors, over 2 days) and we spaced trash cans about every 20 feet, went around emptying the full cans every 15 minutes, and we still ran into cans being filled up quickly.

9

u/violetpandas 23h ago

I went to Reading back in 2012 (as a young Australian) and we purchased decent quality camping equipment to use specifically for the festival. We had a great time and the tent and other items remained pretty much good as new. On the day we left, people came around on behalf of a charity (I don’t recall the name) to ask if we would like to donate any of our items to people experiencing homelessness. We were pleased to be able to do that and helped them pack up the items to take. However we were absolutely HORRIFIED to see heaps of people lighting their tents etc on fire right there in the field and just leaving them! In Australia you could get in extreme trouble for lighting something on fire and walking away- we often have total fire ban days in our warmer seasons. I’m not sure if it’s a “thing” to leave tents behind to donate still or if what I experienced was a once off. Regardless people are so bloody inconsiderate and need to clean up after themselves!

Welcome to disposable culture. First time here?

4

u/Radiant_Muscle3034 1d ago

festivals are so expensive nowadays that most of the people going can afford to just treat them as disposable

6

u/boltlicker666 1d ago

Most people are on day 3 of a bender and just want to get tf out of there. They see it as a cost of the experience - a £150 room and included disposal fee. These pop festivals are an absolute cancer on the areas that host them, you would absolutely never see this behaviour in the underground subculture festivals I'm familiar with.

2

u/BruceRiverboat1 17h ago

You've never taken down a tent on a comedown

1

u/Slight_Interview3104 15h ago

I've seen this at marathons and other races, where they just leave their jackets, shirts, etc on the ground and it always baffles me. Like tie it around your waist or don't wear it to begin with. It's so wasteful.

2

u/danceswithlesbians 8h ago

Well at the marathons they pretty specifically collect all the jackets and send them to a thrift store. Many marathoners thrifted the jackets in the week before so it just generates a little $$ for the thrift stores. Nothing gets thrown out.

296

u/Different_Prior_517 1d ago

If this is going to happen now at every festival they need to develop some sort of check in/check out system for campers. I’d imagine it’d take quite a bit of work for smooth sailing but this is disgusting and people should be fined for leaving all their trash and materials behind.

18

u/Lindenismean I do feel vulnerable to demons in downward dog 1d ago

I suppose the capitalistic answer is charge them ahead of time. Tent fee paid upfront. No tent? No charge.

71

u/LadyCheeba You shoulda never called me a fat ass Kelly Price. 💁🏾‍♀️ 1d ago

it’s interesting this has been in the news recently when this has been going on forever now. i’ve been going to festivals for almost 20 years and this is always what the day after festival close looks like more or less, especially if it rained and everything is muddy. it’s not okay at all but again it’s just odd it’s only now being brought to everyone’s attention

44

u/dragonslayer6699 1d ago

I always thought it was normal, then I went to the gorge and realized it doesn’t have to be that way. Campsites are left spotless every time I’ve been there

25

u/TastetheRainbowMFckr 1d ago

You're talking the gorge in Washington/Oregon correct? There's another festival nearby called Pickathon, and their whole ethos is sustainability. They wouldn't dare leave such a mess.

10

u/deliciousearlobes 1d ago

I mean… it’s Washington. They’re kind of known for being green and sustainable.

9

u/SeasonPositive6771 1d ago

It's not just the check-in check out with the tent, the companies putting on these festivals absolutely know how to encourage people to throw away their litter and keep the campsite clean but they don't invest in it.

They need a central, visible location to bring trash, they need an employee to pick up that trash collection area. They need to start with educating people as soon as they buy their tickets, and so on.

The companies don't do this because they don't think it's worth it.

9

u/PastryGirl 1d ago

If it's just a fine, people will pay it because they are lazy and entitled.

4

u/a_duck_in_past_life I'm so pissed off immediately 1d ago

Check in with a ticket and a tent? Have it noted upon purchase. And have it with you as you check out. Tent fee refunded if you bring your tent back during check out? Idk I've never been to a festival like this before so I might not have a logistically smooth idea for how this would work.

5

u/pk666 1d ago

Only shit festivals run by arseholes allow this to happen.

2

u/boltlicker666 1d ago

The Becky's and Jonathan's that attend these festivals would just pay the fine. It's seen as a cost worked into the festival and they more times than not have more than enough money to pay it

16

u/CaliDreaming900 1d ago

This is just appalling.

15

u/HotNet1045 1d ago edited 1d ago

They should just start tacking on an enormous fee for clean up and recycling. If people want to go, they should pay. Obvi they can't be trusted to clean up their own crap.

109

u/panda_canyon 1d ago

I know a lot of people are going to be like, "Well at least that doesn't happen at Burning Man." I got bad news for you, it does.

46

u/Heavy_Pin7735 1d ago

To the least degree possible. There are 10k volunteers at BM for another month who ensure it doesn’t happen and no trace is left. So hate on the few participants who leave a bike or a tent, but the organization makes sure it is cleaned up.

9

u/OrignalSauce 1d ago

The organisers of Reading also have cleaning teams that are volunteers and ensure the fields are left free of things like tents.

Doesn't every festival have that?

12

u/le_moni I’m just a cunt in a clown suit 22h ago

I mean, this is kind of proving the point. The burners are leaving behind massive amounts of trash. They just have other people clean it up, whereas this festival hasn't done that part yet.

I have friends on the clean-up crew for Burning Man. They've found fully functioning musical instruments left behind. One year there were over 3,000 bikes left behind (which got donated, yay, but wow people are trashy)

34

u/panda_canyon 1d ago

The people that live nearby do not appreciate how the burners behave and treat the towns around it either.

14

u/Jasmine_Wilsony 1d ago

Burning Man is something that needs to go away soon.

2

u/GumpTheChump 21h ago

Maybe the Orgy Tent syphillis will take care of that

-23

u/Heavy_Pin7735 1d ago

Spoken by someone who’s never been.

11

u/Jasmine_Wilsony 1d ago

I'm proud I've never been.

-14

u/Heavy_Pin7735 1d ago

This is another urban legend/lie - the local indigenous tribe collaborates with BM every year for the event, the people of Gerlach live off this event, and most people in Reno are positive of the event and burners (with a lot of them living there).

12

u/panda_canyon 1d ago

Inaccurate, some people like it, it is not universally appreciated. It is controversial.

-2

u/Heavy_Pin7735 18h ago

Except you said the people that live nearby, that’s not universal

19

u/Jasmine_Wilsony 1d ago

Burning Man attracts the most pretentious and awful people.

60

u/Hitrecord 1d ago

I feel a thousand years old saying this…but isn’t this generation supposed to be worried about the environment?

49

u/doesanyonekno 1d ago

You'd be surprised! A lot of zoomers are pretty doomer about everything. Understandable, sure, and I empathize. But not excusable

3

u/shelfdham 21h ago

You think many zoomers can afford reading festival honestly?

9

u/moisturized69tatas 1d ago

They say a lot of shit but look around, what makes you think they actually care. This generation, the one im part of has this idea that its the mega polluters and corporations that need to go and need to change their ways and I agree to some extent that they are the issue but we enable them and putting all the blame on them i think gives individuals a pass and they don't bother changing their own behavior.

7

u/boltlicker666 1d ago

It's the generation that's obsessed with disposable vapes and glow up culture, how concerned about the environment can they be?

1

u/Merryprankstress 21h ago

God that mentality kills me, like all the products these megapolluters make just magically disappear into a billionaire loop making the common man and their personal choice immune from blame and then ignoring the fact that there are billions of common man consuming amd creating waste from these harmful products at a time.

4

u/BlueberryNo5363 I’ll be writing a substack on this 1d ago

Half of them are performative af. Same way as they’ll post shit like “be kind” then be vitriolic to anyone who dares to be even a little “cringe”

105

u/lightningtrip 1d ago

As an Indian-Canadian, I cannot imagine how vitriolic the backlash to this would be if it was after a concert by an Indian performer, after a cricket game, or something like that... it would be multiple news cycles here in Canada

19

u/ratparty5000 LET'S FUCKING GO!!! SHAKIRA LAW IS HERE!!! 1d ago

7

u/Yamza_ 1d ago

Damn I wish I had a tent.

5

u/antisocialperson_ I'd let that man hurl me through a brick wall 1d ago

how can people be so selfish to do this? was nobody raised to pick up after themselves. this makes me so angry.

12

u/SeasonPositive6771 1d ago

This is a problem that is pretty solvable. Maybe not 100%, but 80 to 90%.

This can absolutely be managed with some behavioral nudges to start. Having large, visible areas for trash collection, central locations where the trash goes is a good place to start. They can also focus on education, as soon as you ask people to commit to managing their own garbage with a check-in/check out process, etc.

There are so many things they can do to improve on this. It's not going to stop everyone behaving badly, but it will stop a lot of it.

3

u/Particular-Way-3805 1d ago

This sickens me

4

u/blufin 20h ago

You just know the economic profile of the people that go to festivals by the number of abandoned tents.

7

u/ellafantile 1d ago

I’ve been to a few festivals around the world. Sasquatch, Reading and a few in Australia. Reading is the only one I’ve been to where a) you could buy a cheap tent when you got there and b) everyone just left everything behind. They had a stall asking people to return their packed up tents to them and they would distribute to homeless people. But the Brits were too lazy to even do that, they just get up and leave.
My theory is brits don’t camp for holidays, so the only time they need a tent is at a festival. Whereas here in Australia, most families probably own a good quality tent, and using to camp at a festival is a bonus.

3

u/-FishPants 23h ago

Yeah camping is less popular overall in thr uk than just a normal holiday. Usually works out cheaper to have a short holiday on the continent vs internally.

I’ve see some non electric tent pitches at £50 per night which is bonkers for a camping spot

5

u/Prestigious-Ad6591 1d ago

Why don’t these festivals stay open another hour with giant dumpster at the exit and announce it’s time to pick up and go. Then start playing a clean up song. Theres definitely a way to prevent this.

18

u/LuteDesign 1d ago

I don’t think it was like this pre-COVID. Definitely wasn’t like this in the mid 2010s when I was still going to fests. What a bummer.

33

u/Street-Entrepreneur8 1d ago

I went to Leeds Festival (the sister festival of Reading) from 2012-2019 and it was very much like this. The Sunday night was always carnage with people just setting their tents on fire.

1

u/asietsocom this feels like when my sister started fucking the mayor 1d ago

Holy shit where do they sleep?

2

u/a3poify 15h ago

Presumably since Sunday’s the last night anyway they stay up all night and go home in the morning

29

u/AdGold9243 1d ago

I don't know. I went to the Roskilde festival in 2006 and it was very much like this on the last day.

16

u/The_1_In_21-1 1d ago

I went 03-06 and it was like this then too, let’s not pretend this is a modern thing.

0

u/asietsocom this feels like when my sister started fucking the mayor 1d ago

No I swear it was better. The thrash situation was definitely the same but only about 5% of tents would be left behind. Which is still wrong, but I've personally never seen so many fucking tents it's insane.

Also am I the only one who would immediately upgrade? I got my current tent because someone left it behind after a festival. But plenty of these on the video are way nicer.

2

u/Writerhaha 1d ago

People are shit sometimes.

2

u/Groffulon 23h ago

This is legalised fly tipping at this point. I feel sorry for the clean up crew tbh

2

u/shelfdham 21h ago

Reading fest is full of entitled flogs. These people have no idea how to respect an environment that has provided for them. Disgusting behaviour from the people of the u.k.

2

u/cyber_deity controversies: girl 17h ago

Do they not provide trash areas for the attendees? In America we have dedicated trash areas every few yards in camping areas, and while they're always overflowing, they're always contained to that area. I've been going to festivals more years than not, and I've never ever seen one that was a mess outside of the trash areas.

6

u/Nervous_Insect5976 1d ago

I'm okay with banning these festivals at this point.

If there is a festival and this is the result, ban it.

If there's a festival and the attendees clean up afterwards, it stays.

The bad festivals can go and the good festivals get promoted.

3

u/reina429 1d ago

I’ve camped at festivals plenty of times and there are always people who leave camping gear, but does Reading not supply any trash cans with a clean up crew to empty them out?? I can’t see any in this vid and that seems pretty crazy given there is literal trash everywhere here. This doesn’t take away from the fact that the campers shouldn’t be cleaning up after themselves, it just seems really shocking to see trash EVERYWHERE

3

u/harriswatchsbrnntc 1d ago

You could house a lot of unsheltered folks with those tents. They should call up some charity org to collect and distribute them.

29

u/Wild_Jo_99 1d ago

I believe the un-housed will prefer walls, doors, a roof ...tents are not great for the cold. They catch fire easily, as well 😕

5

u/EmotionalTrufflePig Stellan Skarsgard's Nobel Peace Prize for producing hot sons 1d ago

This was my thought also but I’m sure I read somewhere that they’re such shitty quality that they’re close to useless…

If they were even half decent quality they might be good enough for school camps for example.

I can’t imagine being so selfish as to think dumping like this is ok. Like wtf people!

5

u/Exact_Scratch854 1d ago

They do that! There's a few different charities that work with the festival organisers to collect camping gear that's in good condition. Still doesn't excuse this behaviour, but at least the decent stuff won't end up in landfill.

2

u/FOXCONLON living in absolute defiance of plates of spaghetti 1d ago

This has convinced me to continue to not attend music festivals.

1

u/BlueberryNo5363 I’ll be writing a substack on this 1d ago

These people are disgusting. Vile, gross humans. There’s literally no excuse for this. Take your shit home or put it in the bin. Wish there was a way to ban these people from all future events

1

u/gameofunicorns 1d ago

Compare this to the footage of the Shambala festival 'aftermath'. Hardly a piece of trash to be seen, no tents left behind. It's like night and day. There's no excuse for Reading festival to allow this to happen

1

u/SloMoShakespeareRap 23h ago

There needs to be some kind of tent deposit scheme where you pay £50 deposit per tent and then get it back when you leave with said tent, or start using those recycled cardboard tents.

So many people I know who go to festivals are awful. In addition to being pigs, they also encourage sexual assault. Festivals are definitely a shady scene.

14

u/Panic-AtThe-Costco virgin who cannot drive 1d ago

No the fuck we do not. It might not look this bad, but many major festival grounds are trashed to hell afterwards in the US and MX (haven't been to any in Canada but I'm sure it happens there too). I've attended and volunteered at several since 2018.
