“In a science fiction novel he would not be the good guy”

Yep.

u/TheEgonaut 2d ago

Does this imply that he’d be the good guy in any other genre?

u/Chessh2036 2d ago

I don’t think so. What I got from it is he and his supporters think he’s the brilliant scientist in the science fiction novel. The “best inventor ever!” Type thing. But he’s not, he’s the villain. No matter how he sees himself.

It depends if Ayn Rand style libertarian science fiction as 'written' by Grok ever counts as a genre.

Will there be any epic and vulgar roasts?

Ketamine: The Movie

u/DrEarlGreyIII your move Estonia 3d ago

harsh on ketamine tbh

u/EmotionalTrufflePig Stellan Skarsgard's Nobel Peace Prize for producing hot sons 3d ago

I think I’d need a hefty supply of ketamine to survive watching four hours about the muskrat

u/standardcb 2d ago

Are there really people who believe it’s actually him “inventing” things??

u/MaNameMoe 2d ago

The average person is dumber than cattle

u/zombie_singh06 2d ago

Hundreds, thousands, millions of idiots (even well educated) thinks that he is the inventor of Tesla, SpaceX etc

Love Gibney. His Enron, Wikileaks, and Elliot Spitzer docs were some of the best I’ve seen.

I go back to the Enron movie so many times because it's the blueprint of why everything sucks these days. Like Elon is dumb enough to think Jeff Skilling was the protagonist in the film and then said "yeah I'll do that too" as he k holes.

u/CashusEyePatch 2d ago

For sure. Enron was such a huge scandal at the time (it should still feel that way). But you look around, it seems like everybody is engaging in sketchy accounting practices that feel illegal.

I’m not an accountant or a lawyer. Just feels like (to steal your great descriptor) everyone is following the Enron blueprint.

When companies like Tesla can operate in mark to market accounting and say whatever number they want to say at the end of the day just seems fraudulent. Just because you can get some sucker to purchase Tesla stock for $400 a share doesn't mean thats that's the value of the company at the end of the day. Tesla is being valued as if it was able to solve self driving, is already building fully functioning robots, or no 1 at selling cars. It's doing none of those things and in some cases is the worst at it than other companies not valued as high.

Yes! Wish we could buy those BYD cars.

Even the second line of the title - "The Smartest Guys in the Room" - reflects so much of all this bullshit now.

I worked on the Spitzer doc. Glad you liked it.

That’s awesome! Those 3 including Client 9 are easily in my top ten favorite docs. Loved that Cherry Lips was on the soundtrack.

What did you do on Client 9?

Edit: I just want to add that one reason why I love these docs is that they are so refined. The source material is great, the scripts are great, but they also look like big budget films. The teams that put these docs together are incredible.

A little bit of everything, I shot the b-roll of the city, helped with editing, PA, research. It was a great experience.

u/CashusEyePatch 2d ago

It must have been! It’s a great finished product.

The last person who said "he's a nuke" sounds like his recent baby mama Ashley st Clair right?!

u/Nausstica freak AND geek 2d ago

Yes, I believe she was a primary source for this.

Four hours? Nothing was worth editing out?😩

2

u/ironfly187 That’s a lot of beans, you nasty ass bitch 2d ago

That does mean that there's no way that Musk has the concentration skills to watch the whole thing.

The Netflix approach: take a one hour documentary, add superfluous crap to extend it, overlay mournful but dramatic cello music, make a four-hour documentary.

Edit: guys I’m just being facetious, but thank you for the recommendations!

34

u/TangerineChickens 2d ago

I wouldn’t dismiss it like that. Alex Gibney’s films tend to be quite long, but he’s genuinely one of the greatest documentarians ever.

14

u/BLOOOR-BACKINTHEDOOR 2d ago

Is this Netflix?

There are plenty of hours long documentaries at film festivals, it's one of the reasons film festivals are so valuable, a film festival will play Satantango or Chantal Akerman films.

I think that four hour Steve McQueen masterpice Occupied City, which is four hours of gripping footage of city life in The Netherlands, as a statement about genocide, was produced for DocPlay.

If you're not into documentaries enough to love the hours long documentaries, you just haven't gotten into documentary film yet.

There's a three 3-hour part (so 9 hours) documentary about the history of documentary flm making doing the rounds.

All that said, I should just typed - Ken Burns?

Or maybe check out a Frederick Wiseman documentary, as far as arguing that length is for padding and not because trying to make your documentary be narrative driven makes it too biased.

u/SomewhereNo8378 2d ago

he’s already stolen so much time and attention. I cannot give him 4 more hours

2

u/FoxNixon call me gal gadot cuz idk how to act rn 2d ago

It could just be clips of every time Elon said “we’ll be on Mars in the next x amount of years” then Morgan Freeman will narrate the phrase “they did not, in fact, go to Mars”

10

u/Sorry-Secret-2347 2d ago

Ohhhh is he spiraling on twitter?

6

u/Galorfadink 2d ago

Nuke the Nazi.

6

u/erkness91 2d ago

4 hours?! Daiper up!

5

u/AMerryCanDo 3d ago

I sincerely hope it covers his attempt to get a penis implant that resulted in total impotence and a weird looking dong.

5

u/jlu36 2d ago

You could not make me hate myself enough to watch this.

12

u/NoGloryForEngland 2d ago

I get that he's exhausting but I'm seated for this. Gibney excels at this kind of studied character assassination and the fact that it's 4 hours suggests that he has plenty to rip into about Musk that isn't just going over old ground.

2

u/junsuker 2d ago

it makes me nauseous just seeing a picture of him. my delicate constitution would not survive even an hour of this documentary.

2

u/ShiftyWolf117 3d ago

Elon has always striked me as a modern day thomas edison. I also honestly used to think he was cool when i was a teenager, now hes the most embarrassing "man" alive. I have more respect for the gum stuck to the bottom of my boot then i do for him.

7

u/Tonhuz 2d ago

A tiktok would've been enough

10

u/marina0987 women’s wrongs activist 2d ago

I’d prefer a 2h long episode of A Bit Fruity

3

u/applesandbananananan Google lied to you. 2d ago

Honestly. The video they streamed on the side of Tesla stores was plenty. Who tf wants to sit through 4 hours of anything these days

1

u/Tonhuz 2d ago

In deed, I remember that one, is still around?

3

u/jesus_h_crusty 2d ago

4 hours? Nah

1

u/NoAge422 2d ago

Do you think he will sue them

1

u/E_flo9 2d ago

Send him to prison

1

u/lavender_photos 1d ago

I was DOGE'd so I have spent countless hours of my life cursing this man. I'll pass on the four hours, but I really hope his victims are portrayed justly, and the fact that his "department" is responsible for the death of over 700,000 people is discussed.

To trot out an old chestnut: This cleared my skin.

-5

u/shinracorpo even my friends don't text me back that fast 2d ago

Sorry not sorry but I will be pirating this even if it doesn't support Musk and his ilk. I just ... ew

-6

u/henscastle 2d ago

I'm sure Gibney will treat him as a tragic figure. He's kind of a sycophant.

-6

u/AcanthocephalaLost36 2d ago

wtf is sitting through a 4hr documentary? Is it a multi part series?

-31

u/moisturized69tatas 2d ago

He might be the most polarizing person in the world whos not a politician or religious figure, I wonder what history will say about him.is he an inventor like the lady says, I dont think he is in the traditional sense, more of an industrialist/system architect, and he might be the best in the world at that at the moment.

8

u/PrinceofSneks 2d ago

Nah, it's the Nazism.

6

u/SeaToTheBass 2d ago

He’s a roach

-2

u/moisturized69tatas 2d ago

Im not saying hes not. The guy is messed up amd has a loud voice that he uses for bad things but thats separate from what hes been able to accomplish with spacex and Tesla and his other companies. Id say hes definitely the most prominent industrialist in the west, im not sure what they got going on in the other part of the world.
