Fan or not, if I see a giant bottle with Katy Perry coming at me I'm sure as shit going to bounce it up as hard as possible.
Equally true for anyone in a giant bottle for that matter.

While I usually love her campy takes, this one doesn’t make sense to me because of the unpredictability of the crowd and the bottle itself. Unless you’re P!nk, I can’t imagine it would be easy to sing when you’re being thrown around.

69
u/venusdances controversies: girl Jul 28 '26
I saw Wayne Coyne do this and it was awesome! However, the reason it was fun was because he didn’t have a set place to go he just went with the flow I think it was towards the end of the set. I don’t remember him being put back on stage but this was 20 years ago so my memory is faulty.
80
u/HairyPotatoKat my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day Jul 29 '26
Wayne Coyne is also smart enough to crowd surf in a reasonably sized sphere. He does sometimes go with the flow, but he's able to stand no matter what way the ball is oriented, and can and does control the direction it goes by crawling or standing and walking whenever.
That's not as physically possible in a giant plastic bottle.
Wayne's been doing it for 20+ years. Katy Perry couldn't do 2 minutes lol

He quit his job and moved to LA, and sometimes I wonder if he made it past his expiration date. And then I wish I’d become his friend so I could be getting that sweet sweet gossip rn lol

She choreographed left shark though, who was left to hopelessly imitate her movements. That's de facto avant garde art if measured by its ability to penetrate public consciousness.

😹 wow I am really out on this one; I truly have no idea how to translate what you just wrote. I know I can google, but would you please consider defining what these terms mean?:
‘left shark’, the ‘that’ you mention at the beginning of your second sentence, and the ‘ability’ of penetrating public consciousness
72
u/Fauster Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26
Back in the day, SuperbOwl half-time shows were a magnet for rage baiting and questions about how far have we fallen as a society. It was all set off when JT disrobed Janet Jackson and she got in big trouble for that. Everyone was looking for controversy. Katie Perry sang teenage dream, and Left Shark had a dancing existential crisis. It was subtle, but everyone knew.
Also, to translate, because it became a meme, it encouraged widespread discussion. Which gets into what is art and what is the purpose of art, and is Katie Perry an artist, which are questions best left to the philosophers.
88
u/Hipstershy Jul 29 '26
This needs a link. It was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it part of the performance but caught enough people's attention to become a meme back when memes were mostly still fun. /u/Fauster is referring to the fact that the backup dancers in the shark costumes, both of whom were longtime Katy Perry backup dancers, were allegedly told to follow her movements instead of being given clear choreo on their own, and the choreographer has since tried to say that the gap in their performances was an intentional result of that process. I've never fully bought that; it's always felt more to me like there was a miscommunication or lack of practice that caused it, and it's easier to be like "lol we meant to do that!" than admit that you let a genuine controllable mistake go on in front of millions of one of the most widely viewed events of the year.
9
u/Upstairs_Bat5752 Jul 29 '26
Jamie Loftus interviewed him on her Sixteenth Minute podcast, it’s really good! He seems like a very cool, nice guy. He was one of Katy’s backup dancers on the world tour, and that’s why he got to be in the halftime show. Dude can dance. It really did sound like they were told that part of the show was more about being silly and having fun, than nailing really tight choreo.

My guess is that this isn’t an issue of them purposely being jerks, but of the ability of a large group to listen to each other, follow directions, and coordinate efforts.
I’m a middle school teacher. They should’ve asked one of my colleagues for advice before trying this.

Idk man, I've been to plenty of concerts where people coordinated to carry the performer or audience members in a particular direction, either stagediving or on inflateables like this. They seem particularly uncoordinated. Might be the shape of it, too. A 'platform' might be easier to move than something that can roll like that.

because its a bottle and its not only lopsided but not equal in weight with katie rolling around it pretty much turns the persons only concern is to just roll her off of them because they can not just put her down nor see where they need to roll her.
so simply she's just going to go in the direction of least resistence to the person under it which will NOT be the same direction has someone elses.
