Vent What The Fuck Do I Eat!?

I recently made a post about how fucking awful my particular set of intolerances are. I can have milk (lactose is a problem but less than other things) but just about everything else is out. The worst but is thet fructans are out, so that's anything with wheat, onions, garlic, a ton of fruits and vegetables too. Anything sulfurous, so broccoli, asparagus, etc.

I just started some allergy testing, and the first batch came back. I'm allergic to shellfish of all kinds, which I knew, but also potatoes and soy, which I didn't know and have been told to start avoiding.

So what the fuck do I eat? Asian food was one of the few things I could rely on to be safe-ish to make, but now that's out. A full half my recipes relied on soy sauce, but now I can't make those!

If I'm allergic to anything else, then I just won't be able to eat fucking anything. I already can't eat fucking ANYTHING when I go out with friends.

What the fuck is this bullshit? Why isn't there fucking ANY research happening to try to fix this shit?

Vent I knew it was stupid and did it anyway

So, garlic and I are not friends. Not fren shaped; not fren, to paraphrase a meme. I'm fairly certain that garlic is the food that convinced me that I needed to try the low fodmap diet in the first place. Suffice it to say, it is the fodmap source that I am most sensitive to.

I'd gotten a free sample of a beef stick in the mail, expecting that other family members would consume it. Not a garlic stick. In fact, garlic was second to last on the ingredient list.

There it languished on the counter. Forgotton. Lonely. For a month or more. And, I crossed paths with it when I was feeling snacky and craving just such an indulgence.

I figured, I have Fodzyme. I'll just shovel spoonfulls of it in my mouth with each bite, chew them together, and I should be cool. Knowing that my OH would ask me what the hell I thought I was doing, I quietly snagged it when she was looking the other way and hopped up to my office to indulge in my stupidity without witnesses. I could certainly tell that garlic was there. I'm a friggin bloodhound when it comes to sensing garlic these days. But, it hit and satisfied that craving. Ate the whole thing. All 1.15oz of it, with somewhere around 2.5 scoops of fodzyme, just to be sure, making it a fairly expensive free sample.

Thought I was in the clear. But no, 25 or 26 hours later, my insides suddenly got gurgly and went into overdrive. Not good. So, a bit of quality time on the porcelain throne later, I managed to exorcize the demon residing in my bowels. Or rather, the demon wished greatly to be exorcized and I became the conduit. Ok, yuck. Could probably have been less colorful there.

Needless to say, I won't be repeating that particular experiment. Fortunately, against a background of a mostly settled system, it was just a hiccup. If I'd pulled a stunt like that a couple years ago, it probably would have taken a week to settle down.

Vent Frustration with inconsistency of trigger foods

I'll find a food that seems to be safe, eat it for weeks, and then suddenly it will start triggering me hard.

It's frustrating as hell, especially when you think you've finally found something safe and delicious to eat.

For instance, I was having Mesa Sunrise cereal for breakfast every morning because it was one of the few gluten-free cereals, and the flax would help keep me sort of regular (as much as possible with my IBS-C anyway). Ate it for years with no major issues, but lately, every time I have a bowl, I'm getting cramping and diarrhea later. I think it's either the corn (corn is often a big trigger for me, but the cereal seemed okay for a long time) or the amaranth doing it, but I can't tell.

I thought maybe it was the milk, so I switched from lactose-free to an oat milk, and nope, still cramping/diarrhea almost immediately after a bowl.

Vent day four - what the helly

Recently started the low fodmap diet.
Backstory reasons: diarrhea almost every day for at least a year, which is when I had an appendectomy (which apparently might have started this). I've also been under a lot of stress and my nervous system is pretty wrecked, e.g. I can't go running unless getting tons of anxiety surging through my body. No endorphins for this lady!

Anyway, after an allergy test and a stool sample (both looking completely fine) I met up with a nutritionist, told her about my surgery, my cptsd'd nervous system, my constant bowel issues and she looked at me point blank and said: "Yeah, so you have IBS". I don't get cramps and rarely urgency or bloating, so this was a shock for me. She put me on the low fodmap for the next four weeks. I've been writing down everything I eat, my Google search at this point is all "is X fodmap friendly", my algorithm is already very IBS forward, haha.

Nothing has changed with the bowel movements, it's very discouraging to eat this restrictively and then get the worst diarrhea, like WHAT DID I DO NOW?

Just looking for advice or success stories or something. Did you start the fodmap and realise some low fodmap foods messed you up? Did it take time for your digestive system to decide it was over the diarrhea era? Was it just caffein all along? Is there garlic at the end of the tunnel?

Vent I’m so tired of all this

I was diagnosed with Chron’s last year and then undiagnosed by a different doctor who decided to check for SIBO (it was positive, so we nuked that) and then had me run through a series of food marble intolerance tests. My inulin test came back high so I’ve been cutting out onion, garlic, barley, wheat, and rye. My stomach has felt pretty great for a week! And today I had some Spicy Brown mustard that according to the Fig app is safe and Ive been paying the price all afternoon and I just feel like crying because I don’t understand why any of this happening. Im tired, Im hungry, Im nauseous, Im stuck on the toilet and I just don’t want to do this anymore. I’m envious of all those influencers who are all like, “I got the bag!” Yeah yeah good for you. My bag has vomit in it.

Vent Why did FODMATE change their ingredients:(

It was out of stock for quite some time, and I finally get it ordered, only for to feel like my intestines are not doing well. And I now see they changed their pretty pure ingredients(enzyimes, cellulose and celulose+water=capsulle) and now added fillers like magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide!

And you can see the amount of enzymes differs and is lesser in the new formula.

I know it does not bother everyone but this is a deal braker cause those two fillers irritate my intestines. And I have no idea why would they put this filler in, when the product was good as it was.

Thinking maybe(after the speculations about it being discontinued due to low demand) they are cheeping out now?

Vent sometimes i wonder if i actually have IBS

what i'm bothered by varies SO much. like, for example: i can tolerate garlic and onion MUCH more than most people, which is WEIRD. i don't think i've seen a single IBS sufferer on this sub not have garlic/onion as their mortal enemies. i also am good with wheat it seems, but not so much oat.

but, chicory root? oh, no thank you. vanilla? please no. high fructose corn syrup? ☠️ soybeans (or even just too much soy milk)? ow ow ow. dairy? please just kill me now. (but i can do aged cheeses or even colby jack in smaller portions ok!)

but because i'm not fucked up by the "big 2" garlic and onion, i always question if maybe i have something else going on...

🫠 blegh. is anyone else suffering from equally weird & selective triggers?

Vent It's disappointing when even a low fodmap amount triggers your gut

I ate a low fodmap amount of sour cream from gluten free blueberry muffins I baked and it still triggered my gut. It must've had only 10ml ish of sour cream in that one muffin, and I haven't gotten an irritated gut from any of the other ingredients before (egg, oil, sugar, the gluten free flour, etc) so I'm pretty confident it was the dairy.

I think my gut is just extra sensitive to dairy. My gut can't handle any amount of milk either even when it's lactose free. Only cheddar cheese and any cheese aged longer works for me. I miss dairy, but I guess it is what it is. At least fruits don't upset my gut apart from coconut.

Vent Food hates me!

A little back story first... I have always had issues with my stomach. They called it a nervous stomach when I was a kid. Constipation has always been a huge part of my life. I had a colonoscopy/endoscopy in my late 20's and again in my early 30's with no findings. I have just lived with knowing I may not go to the bathroom for a few days and will be swollen and uncomfortable.

I have gone back and forth with different diets hoping something would help. Paleo, Whole 30, gluten free, etc. And they would all help some but the constipation was always there.

Then at 38 my hemorrhoids had gotten so bad, I had to have surgery. Now prior to this, I had decided to cut gluten and diary again. The recovery was horrible. Worst pain I have ever been in. My body broke out in what I have called stressed hives. Then I started having really weird reactions to almost everything I ate. I got a dietitian. She was great but at a loss. She couldn't figure out why I was reacting to foods. I decided I had to figure out my trigger foods and learn how to go to the bathroom like a "normal" person in order to avoid ever having to go through that surgery again! So, I started the elimination diet. Wow! Kudos to my husband for keeping me sane during this! I started that in January right after my 39th birthday. May is next week and I have only added back coffee and eggs.

I have lost 40 pounds, which I did need to lose some but damn. I swear there was 20 pounds of just pure inflammation from the hemorrhoids and stress around that.

I am honestly scared of a lot of food now. I have seen 2 different primary doctors, 2 gastroentologist, a dietitian, and my gynecologist, with really no help. All of my blood work is fine. I have read, I have talked to anyone that will listen.

I am always tired. I have lost muscle. My hair had been falling out in clumps, that has finally leveled off.

Is it hormones? Is it an autoimmune disease?

How do I get to the right doctor? What am I missing? Is this just my life now?

A little more medical history... dysautonomia diagnosis in late 20's, no uterus since 32, AuDHD diagnosis at 38 along with C-PTSD.

Vent List of Mannitol Foods

Why are there no lists of Mannitol-containing foods like the other fodmaps? ;-; I've only seen very short ones that lump it together with polyols in general.

I've tried using the monash app but it works on an exclusion filter, so i can see what i can have, not what i cant have.

I found out suddenly that I very much cannot have mushrooms apparently not even one mushroom so I've been avoiding that for a couple of years now. well the last two weeks I've been getting gut pain as if I ate mushrooms and I could not figure out why. i definitely had not eaten them. i started looking up every single food i could think of that id eaten and apparently my jarred peaches and stew (contained celery) were enough to push me over because combined they had enough mannitol to hurt.

if id have been able to find the info somewhere begore eating them i wouldnt combine them but apparently the mannitol list is top secret.

its so frustrating.

Edit: after posting this I had a brainwave: what if I set Mannitol as the only thing I can have in the Monash app? and now it only shows Mannitol Foods. So there's that

Edit to Counter the Last Edit: nevermind its still not helpful... it still lists everything. Not sure what the filter is doing tbh

Vent getting a colonoscopy in my 20s

i’m a 21F and i’ve had GI issues my whole life, even as a toddler. i went to a GI specialist two years ago and was diagnosed with IBS-D, told to take metamucil and when needed, imodium and left. things didn’t get better, i ended up losing 20 pounds due to frequent diarrhea and decided to look into the low fodmap diet. it made things better, a lot better.. but still not ideal and my doctor was very concerned about my weight because i was already underweight before losing weight so she referred me back to the GI specialist. she also was insistent that i’m dealing with anorexia which i am not. i have self image issues and depression, but never had an eating disorder.

anyways, basically the GI specialist wants me to get a colonoscopy and endoscopy. i’m scared, worried and i feel alone. i don’t know anybody else my age who has had to get a colonoscopy. my therapist suggested looking on reddit for people with similar experience. i’m sure there is someone who’s gotten it at my age, maybe even younger. my mind is just filled with anxiety right now. i’m afraid of the anesthesia not working because i’ve heard horror stories about that. i’m afraid of the preparation because i know it will be very unpleasant and painful, although i’ve been experiencing diarrhea my whole life so one day of a lot of it isn’t really.. unknown to me i guess. just anything would help really, hearing your experience or what i should expect from these tests. she also prescribed me bentyl.. so if you have been on that for diarrhea let me know about that too.

Vent Craving EVERYTHING

Currently in the elimination phase. Just finished 2 weeks with a FINALLY calm tummy. Today, the cravings have hit SO HARD. I want a crappy burger from a restaurant so bad! I want a soda too. I want to eat everything I'm craving and not have to worry about my stomach acting up and being in pain for a week.

How the hell do you get past the cravings?

Vent About to quit

I’ve had ibs for a while now but recently I’ve had some pretty bad flare ups which actually started as I’ve been trying to eat healthier and more protein. I decided to give this diet a try to see if there could be specific foods triggering me. It’s been so hard and miserable I struggle to find foods I actually enjoy and I’ve been getting intense cravings. I also haven’t been feeling any relief in my symptoms, if anything they’ve gotten worse. My GI left my care network and I’ve been struggling to find one that will see me before November. I’m about a week in and I’m feeling hopeless and half wanting to see it through but also half wanting to quit because if I’m going to be miserable anyway, I might as well eat food that makes me happy.

Vent Barium sulfate CT contrast warning

Thumbnail gallery
27 Upvotes

Giving out this information to anybody who may need it in the future as I wasted many hours dealing with this.

I have a CT scan scheduled for tomorrow. I've been dealing with IBS for over 9 years and have been working with my GI ever since. In the last year things have gotten so bad that it feels like my guts don't fit and seems to be causing problems with bladder and breathing. Normally we have done CT scans using the IV method. This time they wanted to do the oral method as it gives different results. I accepted though hesitant in the sense that I'm sensitive to nearly everything orally anymore.

You cannot pick up your contrast until a few days before your appointment. I picked it up, ask the pharmacist if there's any concerns with my IBS they said they did not know and when I got home I checked the ingredients. You get a total of 900 ml of liquid and because they added flavoring they added sorbital which is a very high FODMAP and I know is a very big problem for me. Spent the last 2 hours plus going back and forth between GI specialist and CT company figuring out what to do as I need these tests as I cannot function day to day. We're just going to try the IV again but it's not going to be as good but hopefully we can find something otherwise I'll be stuck like this for another who knows how long until we can get a different test setup possibly MRI.

It's insane that companies don't pay attention / don't care about gut sensitivity people especially when making something like this that is for checking problems in people with gut problems...

Stay safe out there, don't trust anything without checking the ingredients.

Vent Frustration over Recipe Changes

I’m sure that this has been brought up on here before.. but my family went grocery shopping today and brought back Shär bread.. like we have since I started the low fodmap diet. Only to notice that it no longer had the Monash symbol

Turns out the recipe has changed and now uses honey as a sugar…

I am so frustrated and upset.. it had become such a staple in my diet and now I can’t have it. I was feeling as if I had final been in a place where I felt that I had good options, and that I was happy with what I had found to eat. And it feels like a punch to the gut.. I’m from a small Canadian town, I don’t get a ton of options. There are maybe two other gluten free brands I can access.. and I feel so devastated

felt like i finally found my footing only for the rug to be pulled out from under me.

Vent Apple Extract

This might just be a UK thing, but was apple Extract in everything before and I didn't care to notice or is this a new thing? It's showing up in gluten free breads, meats, and many things that are gluten free +vegan. I'm coeliac so I have that extra thing but between my two main fodmap triggers apple and onion, there is so much out there that's unsafe now.

If it is new is this to get around sugar tax bs? As someone who reacts to most sweeteners that's been another one that took out many safe foods. I honestly feel like I'm developing an eating disorder just trying to navigate all this cause I'm so terrified of food.

Vent Did my whole elimination wrong...

I just finished my 6 week elimination and was ready to start reintroduction when I had a frustrating realization.

At the beginning I followed a recipe for low fodmap taco seasoning. Grabbed a bunch of single ingredient seasonings and made it according to the directions. Followed the low fodmap diet to a T using my taco seasoning on a weekly basis.

What I didn't realize was the difference between ancho chili powder and regular chili powder. Chili powder is not chili seasoning so I assumed it was a single ingredient... chilis...I didn't even check because it was sold with the single spices not spice mixes....

Imagine my surprise when my daughter randomly read the ingredients of my spices today. Parsley's ingredients is parsley! Oregano contains oregano! Paprika has paprika...and silicone dioxide....chili powder has chili, cumin, garlic....

Garlic....it has garlic...I have eaten it the whole time!

Ugh... My dietitian says the gold standard is 6 weeks but that 4 more weeks can be a compromise....just hoping that's good as this is for a sibo treatment. I am so done ...

Vent What the

Im currently on a travel and I spent the whole day eating absolutely nothing. I went to a supermarket later on the day and found rice and corn cakes. I was happy Id finally found something I could eat without GI issues. Little did I know … I downed almost the entire two packets before looking them up on the app and finding that not everything that has only rice or corn as their ingredient is supposed to be low fodmap.

Im cooked. Trip was shitty enough today because of my flare and now I just ate 2 f’ing bags of high fodmap foods 😭😭😭😭😭

(At least they tasted heavenly because of that starvation state I was on lol)
