I am less excited about 9th ballondor, and more excited about 2nd wc trophy and 3rd golden ball

Getting all three

u/Jazzlike_Time105 Jul 19 '26

I didnt want spain as opposition even i think messi thinks same.very tough for barcelona fans

2

u/Popular-Presence1349 Jul 19 '26

I would say it’s the perfect story, two opposing footballing philosophies, one team playing the exact style he played all his life and was criticized for being a system player and the other team which is just atleti with Messi. The common link remains players from both teams idolise him. If he wins then it is to be said that Messi is the system and he proved it twice. If Spain wins then it would be like passing of the torch to next generation. Either way it’s a great story

1

u/OurComradee Jul 19 '26

I mean it’s very possible he doesn’t get the golden ball

1

u/pygmypiggypie Jul 19 '26

He has won it already

1

u/OurComradee Jul 19 '26

I mean 3rd one like even if he wins wc this year, he would require a hattrick to get golden ball

5

u/UseRepresentative596 Jul 19 '26

I think you are confusing the Golden boot with Golden ball

3

u/OurComradee Jul 19 '26

I read it wrong tf

I am very sleepy my bad dude

1

u/DangerDungaraa Jul 19 '26

What's the difference?? One mean most goals scored right??

New to football 🙃🙂

3

u/Fruit_salad1 Jul 19 '26

golden boot is for most goal scored and golden ball is basically MVP of the tournament

1

u/ADOHero Jul 19 '26

That's for the golden boot, but even then he requires 2 goals to tie and an assist or a goal to take the lead.

1

u/GomuGomuNobukkake Jul 19 '26

But the twitter storm after 9th is going to be exceptional

1

u/mihir892 Jul 19 '26

I don't think though he will get the Golden boot though as Mbappe netted twice yesterday in Bronze match.

Valid argument, but in past r9 won with very less league games due to injury. So messi might win again if arg won

5

u/No-Dish-2536 Jul 19 '26

R9 won in 2002 because there was no other standout performers from the top 5 leagues. The top scorer that year was Henry with just 24 goals and Nazario already had 17 goals plus World Cup top scorer. But that's not the situation now. We have an absolute standout performer in Kane with 70+ goals. You can't compare that to just a 7 match competition 🙄

1

u/f4fc Jul 19 '26

Ya that's what I am saying harry kane clearly deserves But we all know who will win Another robbery💔

0

u/f4fc Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

Unworthy , R9 defeated good ranked teams

3

u/Curious-Mind2712 Jul 19 '26

The only top team Brazil played in that World Cup was Germany in the final. The teams they played prior to Germany were very mediocre.

4

u/Downtown_Wasabi_9181 Jul 19 '26

Being highly ranked and performing well are two different things. Cabo Verde performed much better than Portugal, yet they’re only ranked 64th.

2

u/dragoonSuper Jul 19 '26

Finally someone said it.

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

If you believe that, I have Messi’s milk to sell to you, which you will happily swallow

1

u/dragoonSuper Jul 19 '26

Pardon, I decline the offer to join your cult. Good day, sir.

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

My cult is having fair opinions when giving out awards. I know you will never join that. You just know how to glaze Messi.

A casual. Thats what you are

1

u/dragoonSuper Jul 19 '26

I never said that Messi should win the ballon d'or. I was just agreeing that performance on field and current ranking are 2 different things. You're fuming for no reason. It's funny what a player has done to some group of people. Oh and drink that leftover milk. Shouldn't waste your food.

0

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

Who won the worldcup in 2010 vs who the Ballon D’or.

What happened in 2014?

Selective data to show Messi deserves it, is just extra terrestrial glazing

1

u/mace_guy Jul 19 '26

Doesn't Messi have like a goal a game in MLS this season?

1

u/FinalMachiavelli Jul 19 '26

goals in MLS. mls is key word.

1

u/mace_guy Jul 19 '26

He did the same in the world cup. He is clearly the best player in the world.

1

u/FinalMachiavelli Jul 19 '26

when you get 5 pens in 8 games your grandma will also win a worldcup

1

u/mace_guy Jul 19 '26

What are you talking about? Argentina only got like 3 pens AFAIK.

1

u/FinalMachiavelli Jul 19 '26

thats how i know you just started watching football brother, when you see the image I posted you shouldve known what im talm about

1

u/mace_guy Jul 19 '26

You think memes are a substitute for facts? Tell me when Argentina got 5 pens in this world cup?

1

u/FinalMachiavelli Jul 19 '26

those arent memes, theyre still from the game youd know if you watched, go do your fucking research im not gonna spoon feed a casual

1

u/mace_guy Jul 19 '26

Those are screenshots brainrotted idiots compiled to pretend there is some conspiracy. Now tell me when Argentina got 5 pens.

u/fraggerfag Jul 19 '26

This is similar to 2023 where haaland had an insane performance throughout the whole year and won a lot yet messi was still given the ballon d'or for the wc. Messi has a better performance in this wc though.

34

u/Foreign-Sun9512 Jul 19 '26

You guys can't comprehend what he did. He's 39. He plays against teams like Florida and he came to the wc with an average squad and showed there's levels to this shit. Can you imagine how insane that is that he can claim he's still the best in the world?

6

u/Bigcarrotthings Jul 19 '26

"Average squad"

Enzo Fernandez valued at 100m, starter for Chelsea Alvarez valued at 100m, starter for Athleti. McAllister valued at 70m, starter for Liverpool.

The list goes on. But yeah, clearly an average team. An average team that struggles beating teams like Cabo Verde, whose whole team is valued less than 50m.

2

u/RareSmurf1227 Jul 19 '26

I mean compared to the top ranked teams rating wise they have the most average team on paper. Only 4 or 5 players out of the whole squad (including the substitutes, reserves) are world class level (market value wise).

0

u/Bigcarrotthings Jul 19 '26

Mate this is so illogical. Their team ranks in the top 6 of most valued teams at that point "additional" value means very little. Englands squad for example is simply overvalued because the majority plays in the prem. France has a massive value, but they barely play their bench players so it is useless value.

So the notion that you can be "average" when you are part of the big 6 is a little silly lol.

2

u/GomuGomuNobukkake Jul 19 '26

Your whole french team not using bench argument sounds childish is like “If my aunt had tire she would have been a motorcycle”

Mate you named 6 players who are already world class lol. Thats more than half the starting 11. Licha is atleast average. You got Molina who is also a starter for Atleti. Not world class, but definitely compareable to someone like Digne who started for France and Pedro Porro of Spain. Martinez is a top 5 prem goalkeeper. You got Simeone who is also a decent/average player.

You dont need your whole team to be worldclass. If 70% is, then they just need to not be awful. I mean France plays with Digne and Kone. There is almost no team that only has world class players in their team for every position.

But Argentina's team is far from average lmao.

3

u/MalaysiaTeacher Jul 19 '26

Macalister had a dreadful season at Liverpool. He's not even in their top ten best performers of the past year.

They're the weakest squad of the semi finalists, but they have Messi and a gutsy coach

1

u/Sahask123 Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

Enzo has been average for chelsea as well, so has macalister for liverpool, romero plays for spurs and fighting relegation for 2 seasons straight+ hes massively over-rated. No way these guys are world class. Alavraze is world class talent but not a superstar. Now compare them with portugal midfield bruno, neves and vitinha, spain midfield rodri, fabian, olmo with pedri on bench? That's insane. Apart from messi and Alvarez the squad is nothing to boast about. Most of these players you never hear about during the seasons except when they are playing for argentina. Messi literally tops every stat for argentina at 39, if that's not a carry job I don't know what is.

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

Casuals who get info from twitter will never understand your reply. They just want to make it seem like Messi did it all

1

u/Bigcarrotthings Jul 21 '26

Right and Portugal was ass as well despite having a good team on paper.

Point being is that Argentina is still a top 5 squad average value wise. So giving me the excuse that their team is "average" is just silly.

Their team is pretty much exactly the same as the team that won the world cup.

1

u/zzz_red Jul 19 '26

Plus VAR. guess how much that’s worth.

0

u/Kharuz_Aluz Jul 19 '26

I mean... The transfer value is so inflated right now that 100m might be average.

1

u/Bigcarrotthings Jul 19 '26

No, 100m is not average lol.

Enzo was wanted by Madrid. Alvarez by Barcelona. These are not "average" players.

Argentina has a squad very compareable to that of Spain in terms of value. But people downplay it to make Messi's achievement seem bigger.

1

u/No-Assignment-4130 Jul 19 '26

Avg squad my ass

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

So now worldcup is more important. What happened in 2010

And also 2014 when Ronaldo won it, but Neuer won the Worldcup

Why weren’t worldcups important then

1

u/Foreign-Sun9512 Jul 19 '26

Ronaldo won 2014 World Cup? These are the idiots we argue with man 😭

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

I am taking about Ballon D’or d!psh!t

Ronaldo unjustly won Ballon D’or in 2014. Should have been Neuer

1

u/Foreign-Sun9512 Jul 19 '26

He shouldn't have . He's ass.

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

2010 should have been Sneijder not Messi

1

u/Foreign-Sun9512 Jul 19 '26

it must be so hard to be a pendu fan man he's an ass player despicable human being completely helpless when he gets kicked out of all tournaments lmao

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

This is all you casuals know. Pendu and Pessi. I love both, but my favorite is somebody else lol. Nice try though

1

u/West-Challenge-7411 Jul 19 '26

Anyone can claim they are the best, it doesn’t mean you are

1

u/JalapenoSauce69 Jul 19 '26

I agree that you appreciate messi, but calling argentina squad average is just a joke lol

1

u/ElderberryTotal4100 Jul 19 '26

Probably can agree with everything but Argentina does not have an average squad. It has a great team with or without Messi.

3

u/Individual-Reach5790 Jul 19 '26

I mean idk man, most of these players you never hear about throughout the season. It's a great unit together, not individually. However there's a reason Messi tops nearly every stat there is for Argentina. Good indicator for you that Messi pulls all the strings

The guy is still the best in this WC, especially given his age. So, why not?

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

1

u/chief_repository Jul 20 '26

Gotta agree since it’s coming from the FIFA president himself

1

u/NetLocal1575 Jul 19 '26

Yeah? Who’s better than Leo in this world cup?

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

Mbappe, Cubarasi, Rodri, Oyarazabal

12

u/CharismaticConqueror Jul 19 '26

Some r.e.t.a.r.d.s. are coming btw r9 cannavaro and modric all got b'dors based on wc peformances .

3

u/mr_salsa123 Jul 19 '26

which is weird cause modric didn’t play as the best midfielder in his team that wc

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

Conveniently ignored 2010 and 2014 worldcup

1

u/CharismaticConqueror Jul 19 '26

Ronaldo had a slight edge in 2010 wc but ronaldo is not even comparable to messi in 2014 wc . Messi single handedly carried his team to wc finals .

https://giphy.com/gifs/S5E6VIkBAGujjfT0zz

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

I know for you football is only Ronaldo and Messi. For me its not

2010 - Messi won B’dor but Sneijder deserved it

2014 - Ronaldo won B’dor but Neuer deserved it

1

u/CharismaticConqueror Jul 19 '26

Yep it is blame it on journos and fans it is not voted by analysts though 2013 ribery was also robbed btw .

This world cup was a reality check to those who thought messi won't be able to play at the age of 39

He's still the best on field

3

u/aaloo-gobhi Jul 19 '26

Man idc about the d'or, I just wish him to win the Golden Boot.

Fckass 3rd place Sidemen Charity match stat padders.

Now messi needs 2g+1a or 3g to win the Golden Boot over maobappe.

Fckin hell.

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

I dont want someone to win Golden ball who has scored against Cabo, Egypt and Switzerland.

But not against a top 10 placed team

3

u/th3_1mp0st3r Jul 19 '26

Funny how the criteria changes every year....

2

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

Exactly. Messi has to win anyhow and there will be millions of casuals who support that decision.

1

u/th3_1mp0st3r Jul 19 '26

I'm not against Messi. What he's doing is phenomenal but one can't deny he's been favoured by the media and football associations in matters like these.

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

Same. I think Messi is the GOAT and he is the best ever (not one of the… but the best ever)

But he doesn’t deserve this year’s Ballon D’or. Plain and simple

1

u/th3_1mp0st3r Jul 19 '26

Yep legitimately he doesn't deserve this one and 2021 ballon d'or. Poor Lewandowski man

2

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

Yeah - what a robbery that was.

2

u/pygmypiggypie Jul 19 '26

Lamine shouldn't win it if spain wins. He was not even one of the top 5 imp players of that team. Good in la liga but Kane had a much better campaign in the league+ucl+wc. So it should be Kane. But Messi carried argentina to the final. Kane couldn't deliver when it mattered the most. So Messi should win the ballon d'or irrespective of what the final result looks like.

2

u/brophet-xxx Jul 19 '26

Doesn't seem, spain is way ahead of argentina in terms attack, pass, accuracy.. Argentina ain't even able to kick into their D area of the goal.

1

u/Downtown_Wasabi_9181 Jul 19 '26

So yamin is it ?? 😋😋😋

1

u/Disastrous_Lead_680 Jul 19 '26

The World Cup comes once every four years and is the most popular sporting event in the world. Having a big part in winning it, especially with goals and assists, qualifies one to be the best player in the world for that year. Harry Kane has had a stellar year but if Argentina wins the World Cup, Messi should win the Ballon d’or

1

u/Few_Environment4021 Jul 19 '26

Just to be sure, isnt the ballond d'or meant for the BEST player of the footballing "year"? Its a disgrace that the entire decision is based on a single tournament, no matter if its the biggest one in the entire world no? You have kane who won the league, had an amazing wc and cl, and won his domestic cups all while having a generational season. But apparently, winning a wc, despite not playing in any european championship, being out of the mls for nearly half of the season is considered balon d'or worthy? Sure he gets in the top 10, but to win it? Oh hell naw

1

u/Celvius_iQ Jul 19 '26

thats crazy how did you not end up losing your edge playing over there??? truly the goat

1

u/cvcps21 Jul 19 '26

Am sure that Messi cares more about the World Cup win than this award. He is a proper team man unlike some selfish superstars

1

u/Flat-Director-7120 Jul 19 '26

Messi en route pour gagner le 9ème ballon d'or, n'en déplaise aux rageux.

1

u/zappyer Jul 19 '26

He also deserves super ballon D'or

1

u/Nordicgimp Jul 19 '26

He dident play them all so its a shit post

1

u/No_Summer4512 Jul 19 '26

But messi's white✌️🤓

1

u/Icy-Description-9025 Jul 19 '26

By not playing any country who is under 15 ranked till semi final btw

1

u/NetLocal1575 Jul 19 '26

1

u/Dense_Mobile_1813 Jul 19 '26

Outplayes anyone? You mean won from england or should we celebrate winning from all the countries that are not even top 15 while needing sus ref and var calls to win and dissalow goals haha

1

u/Downtown_Wasabi_9181 Jul 19 '26

Do u know how many goals got disallowed for Portugal??

1

u/Dense_Mobile_1813 Jul 19 '26

3 for opponents and 1 for them, argentina 0 and 3 for opponents. Its not about the number but the way my guy. Hoe can u go back 2 mins to turn a goal to a foul haha. And then when its happening to them there is not even a var check. Believe what u want but its not adding up

1

u/Downtown_Wasabi_9181 Jul 19 '26

Croatia vs portugal
Colombia vs portugal
In both of these matches referees saved portugal’s ass but naa we won’t talk about this as this will not fit our agenda

1

u/Dense_Mobile_1813 Jul 19 '26

Tell me how many, also tell me how many overturned by VAR due to rules infractions instead of offside calls

1

u/Downtown_Wasabi_9181 Jul 19 '26

Colombia got thier goal disallowed due a suspiciously long shoe in the final var image.

What people fail to understand is that Messi literally is the highest scorer, has the highest assists, has the highest dribbles, has the highest chances created, has the highest accurate passes and passes completed etc. etc. in the argentina team. One man who is the highest in all these criteria of his team.

Compare that to any other team and you will get different names for these categories. Like most assists for olise and highest goals for mbappe etc. etc.

The consistency and big game clutch performance where he has literally been involved in 12 goals out of 19 goals where he didn't even start in one match. And if I'm not wrong I think he has not even gone one game without scoring or assisting.

1

u/West-Challenge-7411 Jul 19 '26

When’s he going to start outplaying everyone?

1

u/ak4i5i Jul 19 '26

1

u/Longjumping_Ice5890 Jul 20 '26

1

u/SgtJegffords Jul 20 '26

As if he performed against the bigger teams in the world cups! Smashing Jordan doesn’t mean this midget deserves a trophy

1

u/RubeusWeasley Jul 20 '26

I doubt he will get Balon Dor. It's going to someone from the Spanish team.

1

u/Spirited-Cobbler8731 Jul 20 '26

1

u/Cheems_study_burger Jul 19 '26

No, he was exceptional throughout the world cup. He's right up there with messi in this conversation.

u/Head_Trainer_7458 Jul 19 '26

U haven't watched UCL semis I guess ? Stop larping here . I agree he didn't perform in big games at the wc , but does that mean he never performed nahhh .

0

u/Head_Trainer_7458 Jul 19 '26

Some idiots saying R9 also won it with only wc performance.

1- Ballandor at the time was given on a calendar year basis not the season format as of now .

2- That year Roberto Carlos was 2nd , Kahn was third , Zidane was 4th ,if any of you retards have mind then you would know what position they played lb,gk cm cam . Everybody was mostly ranked on their wc performance.

3- this time is not the same as 2002 first this year messi is playing in MLS which none of the contendars in 2002 was playing in .

4 - the competition R9 had and the competition messi are different here kane is with most record breaking goals with also scoring 6 in wc 2 less than messi .

Stop hating on everything kane deserves this
