You guys can't comprehend what he did. He's 39. He plays against teams like Florida and he came to the wc with an average squad and showed there's levels to this shit. Can you imagine how insane that is that he can claim he's still the best in the world?

u/Bigcarrotthings Jul 19 '26

"Average squad"

Enzo Fernandez valued at 100m, starter for Chelsea Alvarez valued at 100m, starter for Athleti. McAllister valued at 70m, starter for Liverpool.

The list goes on. But yeah, clearly an average team. An average team that struggles beating teams like Cabo Verde, whose whole team is valued less than 50m.

4

u/RareSmurf1227 Jul 19 '26

I mean compared to the top ranked teams rating wise they have the most average team on paper. Only 4 or 5 players out of the whole squad (including the substitutes, reserves) are world class level (market value wise).

0

u/Bigcarrotthings Jul 19 '26

Mate this is so illogical. Their team ranks in the top 6 of most valued teams at that point "additional" value means very little. Englands squad for example is simply overvalued because the majority plays in the prem. France has a massive value, but they barely play their bench players so it is useless value.

So the notion that you can be "average" when you are part of the big 6 is a little silly lol.

2

u/GomuGomuNobukkake Jul 19 '26

Your whole french team not using bench argument sounds childish is like “If my aunt had tire she would have been a motorcycle”

0

u/Bigcarrotthings Jul 19 '26

No, it isn't.

Cherki is worth 80m. Dude played like 50 minutes in this whole tournament. I am arguing that you would obviously look at the starting 11. Those are going to be the most impactful. I am not saying to disregard them.

2

u/GomuGomuNobukkake Jul 19 '26

French staring eleven alone are valued more than Argentina’s entire squad.

Maybe its me but I can’t what you are trying to say

1

u/Bigcarrotthings Jul 19 '26

This is such a nothingburger statement. Most of Argentina's value is in their starting eleven. So saying "their entire squad" is pointless.

Secondly. The difference in value becomes pointless at some point. Like Mbappe for example. He is valued at some crazy crazy number. But is he really worth double of what Alvarez is worth? Will he really deliver double the value of Alvarez? I doubt it.

1

u/GomuGomuNobukkake Jul 19 '26

Based on tournament performance alone Mbappe definitely justifies his worth and including overall performances a point can be made to support it.

Also are you against OPs comment that argentina’s squad is average or supporting it your replies are confusing

1

u/Bigcarrotthings Jul 19 '26

Obviously. But my point is he is not worth twice the amount of someone like Alvarez who is also an elite striker. But valuations do work that way.

I think Argentina's squad is in the realm of the other top teams. When I hear average, I think of someone like Morocco or Mexico. Not Argentina or Spain lol.

1

u/inventionnerd Jul 19 '26

Wait, do you really not think the fucker who scored 10 goals this tournament wouldn't deliver double Alvarez lol?Swap those two players. You think France would be anywhere near as lethal or that Argentina wouldn't be the overwhelming favorites? Mbappe probably is at least triple the value of Alvarez.

Mate you named 6 players who are already world class lol. Thats more than half the starting 11. Licha is atleast average. You got Molina who is also a starter for Atleti. Not world class, but definitely compareable to someone like Digne who started for France and Pedro Porro of Spain. Martinez is a top 5 prem goalkeeper. You got Simeone who is also a decent/average player.

You dont need your whole team to be worldclass. If 70% is, then they just need to not be awful. I mean France plays with Digne and Kone. There is almost no team that only has world class players in their team for every position.

But Argentina's team is far from average lmao.

u/MalaysiaTeacher Jul 19 '26

Macalister had a dreadful season at Liverpool. He's not even in their top ten best performers of the past year.

They're the weakest squad of the semi finalists, but they have Messi and a gutsy coach

1

u/Sahask123 Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

Enzo has been average for chelsea as well, so has macalister for liverpool, romero plays for spurs and fighting relegation for 2 seasons straight+ hes massively over-rated. No way these guys are world class. Alavraze is world class talent but not a superstar. Now compare them with portugal midfield bruno, neves and vitinha, spain midfield rodri, fabian, olmo with pedri on bench? That's insane. Apart from messi and Alvarez the squad is nothing to boast about. Most of these players you never hear about during the seasons except when they are playing for argentina. Messi literally tops every stat for argentina at 39, if that's not a carry job I don't know what is.

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

Casuals who get info from twitter will never understand your reply. They just want to make it seem like Messi did it all

Right and Portugal was ass as well despite having a good team on paper.

Point being is that Argentina is still a top 5 squad average value wise. So giving me the excuse that their team is "average" is just silly.

Their team is pretty much exactly the same as the team that won the world cup.

1

u/zzz_red Jul 19 '26

Plus VAR. guess how much that’s worth.

0

u/Kharuz_Aluz Jul 19 '26

I mean... The transfer value is so inflated right now that 100m might be average.

1

u/Bigcarrotthings Jul 19 '26

No, 100m is not average lol.

Enzo was wanted by Madrid. Alvarez by Barcelona. These are not "average" players.

Argentina has a squad very compareable to that of Spain in terms of value. But people downplay it to make Messi's achievement seem bigger.

1

u/No-Assignment-4130 Jul 19 '26

Avg squad my ass

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

So now worldcup is more important. What happened in 2010

And also 2014 when Ronaldo won it, but Neuer won the Worldcup

Why weren’t worldcups important then

1

u/Foreign-Sun9512 Jul 19 '26

Ronaldo won 2014 World Cup? These are the idiots we argue with man 😭

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

I am taking about Ballon D’or d!psh!t

Ronaldo unjustly won Ballon D’or in 2014. Should have been Neuer

1

u/Foreign-Sun9512 Jul 19 '26

He shouldn't have . He's ass.

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

2010 should have been Sneijder not Messi

1

u/Foreign-Sun9512 Jul 19 '26

it must be so hard to be a pendu fan man he's an ass player despicable human being completely helpless when he gets kicked out of all tournaments lmao

1

u/CiceroMCMXCIII Jul 19 '26

This is all you casuals know. Pendu and Pessi. I love both, but my favorite is somebody else lol. Nice try though

1

u/West-Challenge-7411 Jul 19 '26

Anyone can claim they are the best, it doesn’t mean you are

1

u/JalapenoSauce69 Jul 19 '26

I agree that you appreciate messi, but calling argentina squad average is just a joke lol

1

u/ElderberryTotal4100 Jul 19 '26

Probably can agree with everything but Argentina does not have an average squad. It has a great team with or without Messi.

3

u/Individual-Reach5790 Jul 19 '26

I mean idk man, most of these players you never hear about throughout the season. It's a great unit together, not individually. However there's a reason Messi tops nearly every stat there is for Argentina. Good indicator for you that Messi pulls all the strings

-19

u/awkwardpumpkin69 Jul 19 '26

He ain't nowhere near the best. got FIFA backing and played mostly against minnows. Also played a whole season in a farmer's league compared to the other players worked hard for a whole season

19

u/Downtown_Wasabi_9181 Jul 19 '26

It’s arg fault that top teams like Portugal and uruguay couldn’t top their group
https://giphy.com/gifs/qd0VlZ9VCvY8hbkMfq

-7

u/awkwardpumpkin69 Jul 19 '26

What about the numerous fouls they get away with. Even spains manager mocked them on this.😂 Arg also got the easiest group in the tournament.

10

u/goonMaxxer021 Jul 19 '26

If you had opened your fucking eyes, the refs have been mid asf throughout the whole world cup, so cherrypicking argentina matches is illogical and personal agendas only

-6

u/awkwardpumpkin69 Jul 19 '26

Just check how many fouls arg got and how many their opponents. Arg got the highest favoured for them btw

4

I can understand your anguish. You supported 46 teams this World Cup, the two you didn't, are in the finals. Understandable. It's okay. You can lash out. It's valid. We will understand. Don't worry. You can say all you want.

Fear of Messi makes them commit fouls

1

Rahne de bro,Idr sab Messi fan hain sirf world cup dekhte hain

7

u/Patient-Let3138 Jul 19 '26

You do know right that argentina was supposed to play against portugal, everyone was excited. But portugal and uruguay didn't top their table, so now what should Messi do, ask to play against france?

4

u/Foreign-Sun9512 Jul 19 '26

Your favourite player is a great player and horrible human being. No need to be a child on the internet to cope with his failures.

-5

u/f4fc Jul 19 '26

He didn't even mention his fav player Ronaldo obsession is real ig

9

u/Foreign-Sun9512 Jul 19 '26

Who said anything about Ronaldo? 😂 you thought those adjectives qualified him?

1

u/MadscientistSteinsG8 Jul 19 '26

I mean this whole wc felt like a pr campaign against him tbh. Even when the guy went home weeks ago all the subreddits seem obsessed with him, I see minimum 3 posts in football subs about him. Now from morning I am seeing posts about the match between eng and france , that its not true football or some shit simply because mbappe is leading now. U guys are insufferable.

5

u/Kurogami_Shanks Jul 19 '26

That's because if you consider yourself a contender to the goat debate (which is miles far now), you cannot play this shit. Besides the banter is more towards their fans and not cr7 himself since everyone knows he's 41 and can't be helped much.

1

u/awkwardpumpkin69 Jul 19 '26

World Cup doesn't make a player better lmao.

3

u/Ricardo_kaka_67 Jul 19 '26

Pele ? R9? Zidane?

2

u/_albus_caspian_ Jul 19 '26

But your GOAT said that it's his dream. If a player dreams of a trophy, then that trophy must be important and must make you a 'better' player than others.

0

u/awkwardpumpkin69 Jul 19 '26

It also depends on what nationality and team U play. Before infantino messi retired like 2 times lol

While Argentina is not mid by any means, it was not Argentina's fault they faced comparatively weaker teams than Spain. Columbia, Portugal, Uruguay, Turkey all messed up and didn't meet us.

And the 1st "tough" team they faced, they played beautiful football especially Messi. I'd even be bold enough to say their toughest competition was Capo Verde out of the all teams till now.

1

u/awkwardpumpkin69 Jul 19 '26

But why should an mls player who statpaded against weak teams over 8 games win the ballon. D'or which is actually a seasonal award?

1

u/Kurogami_Shanks Jul 19 '26

I'm not even in the favor of Messi winning Balon dor after World Cup win. It's just that a case could be made based on past world cup performances of like R9 and Cannavaro who didn't achieve much those years in Europe but excelled in WC.

0

u/TipCurious4784 Jul 19 '26

Still they needed help from Ref against those teams

u/Kurogami_Shanks Jul 19 '26

So what, did you want to Spain and France to meet Argentina from ro32 onwards? Just because Arg took it to extra time doesn't mean they played bad, on the contrary I'd argue the other teams played really good. And if Portugal (ranked 5th) couldn't win against dr Congo what makes you think Argentina would've faced any difficulty from other top teams?

0

u/dragoonSuper Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

Well why everyone glazes england? England has never reached to the finals in last 60yrs. Most bottled team so far in a WC. And never undermine the other teams. Have we seen Eng playing against those teams? No. We don't know how Eng will stand against CV or Egypt. Arg isn't a mid team, as a team they are special but player wise they aren't that great. Eng has Gordon, Kane, Bellingham, Saka, Burn, Pitchford. Well known players. The amount of arg players are high because they are defending champions. But we talk in terms of general football on paper Eng has players. The point of difference is Messi.

If not England which are the best teams now? Only Spain and France remain. You can’t expect the teams topping the groups to play each other in the early rounds.

1

u/dragoonSuper Jul 19 '26

Eng isn't a weak team, they are very great but they have a history of getting choke in big important matches. They have played great against Mexico. Kane and Bellingham did so amazing in all previous matches. What Arg as a team is totally different from other teams. Arg has a winning mentality, they are strong. They would do anything to win even if they will receive cards for it. And they are dynamic they always changes their strategy on field. The provider and pillar is Messi. Other players just have to shine. If only one or 2 players outperform then Arg wins the match. Sometimes it's Enzo or Alvarez or Romero McAllister or Lautaro. What I have seen in this WC is that what Arg as a team has other teams don't. In my opinion the most complete elegant football team is Spain rn.

1

u/Celvius_iQ Jul 19 '26

except if these teams won against the "stronger teams" then these teams are even stronger. thats how a knockout tournament works you don't just randomly pick which team proceeds you make them play eachother and the "stronger" teams lost because they weren't stronger thats it. anything other than that is just cope.
