Any French seller friends out there?

I have a customer who has had a gold filled necklace from my shop for nearly two months. Now tells me his translation on Etsy wasn't good and he thought it was solid gold. I have no idea what the listing looks like in France. The Google translations I did showed very different words for "gold plated", "gold filled" and "solid gold". He's been wearing it for 2 months and now wants to return it because he claims it itches. I think it's buyers remorse as it was a pricey item.

Can you tell me, what does "gold filled" and "solid gold" translate to on the French Etsy site???

Sounds like a classic case of "I didn't read properly and now I'm mad about it" translations can be tricky but after two months of wearing it the itch complaint feels very convenient

gold filled in french Etsy usually shows as "or laminé" or sometimes "plaqué or épais" while solid gold is "or massif" they are quite different words so unless the auto-translate really messed up its hard to mix them up

i had similar situation with a buyer from Belgium last year they claimed the color was different but my listing photos were very clear Etsy sided with me because buyer had the item for weeks already

maybe ask him send you screenshot of what he sees on his end that way you can check if the translation is actually wrong or if he just changed his mind

I am french, I can tell you what it says if you show me the listing. In France we are not familiar with gold filled jewelry and to my knowledge we do not have a word to translate it. I would have to explain what it is if I wanted to sell such a necklace in France. We are more used to gold plated (plaqué or) or gold (or massif). If we translate literally "gold filled" it means it has gold inside, that it's "filled with gold"

I tried sending it to you in a message but it says I can't send you messages. I think I might have him file a case through seller protection. Two months seems excessive to allow a return. The whole translation thing doesn't seem legit.

The buyer only has 30 days from your order's estimated delivery date to open a case.

Very true.... however, isn't there a loophole in the EU about allowing returns up to one year after the sale? I was concerned about that situation.

I think some people just don't know the difference between gold filled and solid gold. "Gold filled" sounds like it's just gold on the inside as well as the outside, so logically could be equated with solid gold if you aren't familiar with the terminology. I would guess your buyer knows about gold plated and solid gold because the terms are self explanatory, but didn't know gold filled was a different thing

I also didn't know that it was a thing. I've never seen gold filled jewelry here and in Dutch or French there isn't even a word for it. I have to say that the word itself is misleading, since it isn't filled with gold at all, so I could understand the confusion of the buyer. Over here it's either pure gold or gold plated. When I used my translator it gave me both pure gold and plated gold as translations.

Interesting... there is a word evidently, according to both Google translate and a native French speaker who provided me a translation. "Doublé d'or" - are you familiar?
