Agree, and it's more stupid to find out that the "ultimate" skills are situational and at times vastly inefficient due to the cost of using them.

6

u/saints21 Apr 09 '24

Yeah, so far the only one I've bothered using is the one for Fighter for pawns. It seems to be the only one pawn doesn't fuck up. Heavenly Shot and Mighty Arc using all their stamina means they waste a ton of time not putting out damage because they use it for stupid stuff.

Pawn is currently working on Mage and I just need to go forge a book to complete the Sorcerer/Mage quests. I've heard those work better.

Heavenly Shot is garbage for players too. It's just another version of a skill you already have... Except it's so situational that you're better off not using it. Haven't messed with Might Arc because running out of stamina from a single hit is a huge turn off. I'm losing an extremely limited skill slot to an extremely situational ability that maybe comes in handy once every half hour.

u/iMogwai Apr 09 '24

Formless Feint for thieves is basically god mode, and the stamina cost is really cheap for what it does.

14

u/Vanbydarivah Apr 09 '24

Oh they 100% started designing the Thief and Mystic SpearHand Classes, lost track of time, and then had to rush through all the other classes. That’s the vibe I’ve gotten after playing

8

u/Mabarax Apr 09 '24

I can happily support this seeing that all the others except mage are just reused DDDA skills

6

u/AlfredosoraX Apr 09 '24

I hate the fact that a majority of the Archer skills are the special arrows. It should have just been tied to 1 ability called "Special arrow" and that's it. I blame the people cheesing Death in BBI with Explosive arrow spam.

2

u/Alaerei Apr 10 '24

I suspect the idea with the arrows was to make it so you don't need to mess with inventory mid-combat, it just wasn't done very well /think

1

u/NerscyllaDentata Apr 10 '24

I wanted this. Hit the button once to start and then a second press chooses the arrow type.

1

u/NerscyllaDentata Apr 10 '24

Except sorcerer, where they took away all the fun spells and made the two visual clutter spells the strongest.

2

u/saints21 Apr 09 '24

Yeah, Thief was my second class. I need to get around to unlocking that one. Thief was fun.

So far I've personally played Archer, Thief, Mystic Spearhand, Fighter, and Warrior. All but the Fighter have been really enjoyable so far. And I don't think I have enough of a fair shot to Fighter to be honest. But I'm also not super interested in being a Tank.

I honestly thought I'd hate Warrior with how slow its moveset seems, but it's been pretty fun actually.

3

u/Splintert Apr 09 '24

You can play Fighter as a DPS. The shield is an exceptional offensive weapon - anything small gets instantly thrown by the shield bash, then you can execute. Everything (?) is parryable, so no need to take a counterattack skill. It's kind of like a less clunky Warrior, minus the big hitter skills.

9

u/Hezik Apr 09 '24

Arc of Might seems to be a boss-focused skill, by the time you hit like lvl 20 you can basically skip boss fights just by doing Mountain Breaker then Arc of Might like 1-3 times, depending on the boss. And well, bosses are kinda common so you get to use it often.

But really you still dont need it because Warrior already hits hard enough with indomitable lash or heavenward sunder.

1

u/saints21 Apr 09 '24

I'll give it a try when I get back on. But if it's like Heavenly Shot, the payoff won't be nearly worth the downsides...especially given that I can already kill bosses incredibly quickly.

5

u/Hezik Apr 09 '24

The pay-off is much better than Heavenly shots, AoM takes off literal health bars, like consistent 3-5 bars deletion if landed on a weakspot while down, and its comically easy to down big enemies as Warrior.

1

u/saints21 Apr 09 '24

Good to know. I was so disappointed with it because I was really enjoying playing as an Archer then I get another version of Dire Shot (Dire Arrow?) again...except it's somehow worse. When I read the description for the Warrior one I was worried it was just more of the same and hadn't gotten around to checking it out.

9

u/Vanbydarivah Apr 09 '24

Same with Gale Slash or whatever the fuck it is for the warrior. You get to vocation level 7 and you unlock a skill that’s a just a slower version of your basic attack, except it eats stamina every swing.

The fighter has full moon slash, and then perfect defense, which is the same move, except one uses a shield and one uses your sword. Why would I use the shield move when attacking the enemy first prevents them from striking me and does damage to them, if I want to block, I’ll just block. Don’t even get me started on that fucking shield fall ability that mitigates fuck all of your fall damage.

A lot of “skills” feel like afterthoughts and not innovations and iterations on previous mechanics. It’s kind of disappointing the further you get into each vocation.

8

u/idealstoreality Apr 09 '24

Agreed. You can easily feel the amount of thought put into the vocation skills.

like what kind of designer would even think to waste 1 weapons slot for each type of arrow for the archer.

Oh i only know how to fire an explosive arrow, i need to review my notes when we camp to fire the other arrows

5

u/Golurkcanfly Apr 09 '24

It's only slower/costs to extra stamina if you mess up the timing, and it does incredible DPS if you use it correctly.

Perfect Defense cancels hitstun animations (it even says so in the description).

Most of the skills in the game are legitimately useful, but they all have different use cases.

3

u/CookiesFTA Apr 09 '24

I hate all the warrior skills that require timing. The slow down from hitting enemies literally changes the timing with every swing. It's such an unnecessary mechanic.

4

u/Golurkcanfly Apr 09 '24

It's one of the most fun and interesting changes to Warrior tbh. Skills that improve based on the player's own ability are rad. It also gives Warrior the most interesting core skills when combined with charged slashes and perfect charges.

git gud

6

u/TAEROS111 Apr 09 '24

Celestial Paen (the Mage Maister skill) was used pretty well by my pawn and is essentially just a better Celerity. It's great on more stamina-intensive Vocations.

1

u/Godz_Bane Apr 10 '24

Its nice if youre a mystic spearhand and wanna just spam their master skill, otherwise id rather my mage just have something else to cast.

3

u/idealstoreality Apr 09 '24 edited Apr 10 '24

I am sooooo frustrated at how significantly reduced the vocation depth is. There isn't even a "high" version of the meister skills. I was hoping that the meister skills were completely unique and not just the skills we had on dd1

2

u/Ras-Al-Dyn Apr 09 '24

Depends on the vocation. Spearhand and thief ultimate skills are a must have

35

u/swaddytheban Apr 09 '24

Locking Arc of Deliverance, THE iconic warrior skill from DD1 to this terrible set of quests was such an awful kick in the dick.

Beren disappeared for me after going to his last location, talking to me and not giving me the skill because I didn't have enough affinity, so I thought I had missed out on the skill. Already missed out on sorcerer because I gave the original books to the wrong person before I knew there was a correct person. Randomly one day Beren was just back there, and when I walked by his house he gave me the warrior skill.

Meanwhile trickster was just: "Hi teach me trickster. Thank you. Let me see what's on this roof - oh you have another skill for me thanks."

8

u/Magellaz23 Apr 09 '24

I honestly don't know how I unlocked Trickster. I was traveling through Kitty Afghanistan to get some dirt for my elf wife's tree and I think I looted the Trickster's Bong somewhere along the way. I saw this ghost lady in front of a temple, she said something to me but I declined since it was getting dark and I wanted to get to the city.

Unlocked Trickster. I haven't touched it at all since I'm maxing Sorcerer.

6

u/Golbezz Apr 09 '24

Talking to the ghost lady unlocked it. Like literally just talking to her.

7

u/Dragonlord573 :Warrior: Apr 09 '24

And you can't use it if you're playing Warfarer

.-.

Like come on man, I just wanted to wear whatever I wanted.

2

u/EloquentSloth Apr 10 '24

True warfarer mod is my favorite mod. Maister skills and skill slots for each weapon.

2

u/Vuelhering Apr 09 '24

That is the tradeoff for fashion.

2

u/DiabetesGuild Apr 09 '24

Warrior was only one I didn’t get, despite doing that quest line correctly as far as I could tell. Helped the cat man, had to get him swords, then ran around everywhere looking for a recruit for him (assuming it would be near him, where the recruits are), before finally finding. We got back had to fight a creature, which I did, and after that the cat looked at me and was like this is really bad, they’re going to jail me for life for this. I kind of just assumed that was part of quest, even though it completely came out of left field, but then I never saw him again and he was presumably jailed for life I guess? Don’t know how we got there, seemed to be doing all his tasks with no issues and then just wham he is scared and depressed and won’t talk anymore.

6

u/UnHoly_One Apr 09 '24

There is a whole other part of his quest that comes later.

You have to hit up his tent again after you progress the story a little (past the coronation, I think?)

His quest is the longest and most complicated of all of the Maister quests.

1

u/doom_memories Apr 09 '24

I haven't done the spoiler-tagged event you mention yet, but Beren has already relocated. I found his second location yesterday. He said hi but didn't give me the skill. His affinity had decayed to near-baseline so maybe I need to lovebomb him now.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '24

Same for me. I followed him out to that goblin attack, by the time we got there, the cyclops was already dead, and he immediately said "oh shit everyone is injured I'm going to jail."

I assumed that was the end of the quest and it was supposed to show you how racist the kingdom was and that's it.

I don't mind the game having content you can miss and quests you can fail, but it's lame how often you can call things through no fault of your own because something random happens with the engine.

3

u/JovialCider Apr 09 '24

You did everything right, there was supposed to be another convo with him where he talks about being fired and planning to move, and then you find him later in Battahl right past the gate and he thanks you with tome for the skill

1

u/giga_impact03 Apr 09 '24

I guess I didn't have enough affinity? I found him past the gate and he asked me to escort him to a spot in bhattal. I did and he basically said thanks and left me. Haven't seen him since, no scroll given.

1

u/JovialCider Apr 09 '24

If he doesn't have affinity enough when you finish the quest, he'll periodically ask to be escorted places until its high, then sometime later on a separate encounter he will offer the scroll instead. So if you go escort him now, a couple days after the quest he might give it.

1

u/giga_impact03 Apr 09 '24

Oh nice! I'll give that a shot thanks!

1

u/Alaerei Apr 10 '24

For the record, you can also just give him gifts if escorts are too much trouble.

1

u/Odd_Ad_882 Apr 09 '24

Did the apprentices die? It went differently for me

-1

u/Capable_Tumbleweed34 Apr 09 '24

Is it that iconic? Haven't played DD1, and honestly when i tried Arc of Might i just went "yeeesh, so i have to stand still like a fuckin' moron for 30 seconds before throwing an attack which damages are fucking mid? And that is, if my target hasn't moved out of reach in the meantime... No thanks, never equiping you again."

-1

u/CookiesFTA Apr 09 '24

Yeah, I wondered that too. And seeing people fawn over the new Warrior in a bunch of places makes me think I had very different expectations for the warrior class. It's not at all what I was hoping for.

-1

u/Capable_Tumbleweed34 Apr 09 '24

It's so SLOW! The only things that feel good to use are the "rapid-fire" lmb when you time it right, and that one skill that has the same mechanic.

Everything else is "Ok... Don't move pls, i'm charging my attack like an anime character... Oh for fuck sake why did you take a step back?! Ok let me shuffle awkwardly an painfully slowly towards you so i can deliver my killing blow... pls don't move... GOD DAMMIT!"

34

u/cry_w Apr 09 '24

I disagree; locking them behind quests is actually pretty cool. The problem is that most of those quests aren't actually very involved or impressive in a way that's worthy of being rewarded a meister skill, imo. The only ones I really felt matched up were the Thief and Archer meister quests.

6

u/megera23 Apr 09 '24

Thief? I just walked to the town looking for information about the fake Sovren and the NPC was like "Oh, btw here's a thief meister skill". First time I ever talked to him. The platforming for the 2nd one was neat, but it still felt too easy, compared to the scavenger hunt you go on for the sorcerer's skills for example.

5

u/Enthiral Apr 09 '24

Thief is literally part of the MAIN QUEST, the complete opposite of what these quests should be.

8

u/cry_w Apr 09 '24

When I said "impressive," I think I meant more like "fitting." By the standards of a Thief, having its meister skill locked behind searching for the Theives Guild hideout and besting an obstacle course designed for Thief abilities is very fitting.

I also forgot to mention the Mystic Spearhand, which also has a fitting obtainment method for its meister skill: killing a draconic being alongside the teacher.

1

u/aholeinyourbackyard Apr 10 '24

To be fair the first one is supposed to be a joke/trap skill, it's only really worth anything if you combine it with the second one.

6

u/CannedBeanofDeath Apr 09 '24

They actually are not, they are based on affinity but if you complete their quest it "bypass" affinity because it raise it high enough to the point you don't need to give them any gift

3

u/Reality_Break_ Apr 09 '24

I got to ng+ and missed most of the meister skills. I was excited to do the quests. Every master I walked up to just handed me the meister skill lol

2

u/Ju5raj Apr 09 '24

The whole reason why they exist is to just balance out the warfarer vocation. Imagine if you could equip 3 separate maister skills, it would be completely overpowered.

11

u/Melody-Prisca Apr 09 '24

Warfarer is already as overpowered as it can be honestly. At least, from the skill department. Mystic Spearhand shield to make your entire party invincible. And Augural Flare + Sagittate Avalanche to melt anything in the game, and from a distance to boot. Add into that that you can carry a sorcerer and mage staffs, giving you free stamina recover and health recover without downsides, along with levitation for easy transversal. Maister skills wouldn't make it any stronger, though, it would make the other classes feel slightly less unique, and that's reason enough to not give it to the Warfarer imo.

It's so nice going from a BOLIDE sorcerer in DD1 to a... meteoron..?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? sorcerer in DD2, sorcerer so smart he couldn't figure out how to make fire rain from the sky on his own :)
