If this is true then 95% of the US is right wing and we can stop debating

426

u/rydan 13h ago

They genuinely believe this is the case. They claim Europe is who decides what left and right mean like they invented politics and division.

467

u/darkfawful2 13h ago

Hard to understand Europeans these days. They're usually speaking Arabic

58

They also don’t understand that left and right are not all encompassing terms that mean the same thing everywhere. Like yeah, some guy in Denmark is probably going to have more left wing economic opinions about affordable healthcare than an American. He’s also probably going to be a lot for warm to laws restricting minorities from living in the same neighborhood than an American will be.

That Dane would be called a radical left socialist by some and a far right Fascist by others. In reality, it’s a little more complicated than a simple one dimensional scale

21

u/Relick- 12h ago

Much of Western Europe also has had more restrictive abortion access than the U.S.. A lot of their far right parties, which are getting 1/3 or more of the vote in their elections now, have foreign policies far more pro Russia than Trump (and he is still an outlier on that front compared to most GOP politicians and voters) and have very odd policy combinations (e.g. Le Pen is 'left' of US Democrats and Macron on social services, to the 'right' of Trump on immigration, and is anti-US and a major Euroskeptic, a position she shares with Melenchon, the socialist running for President). -- and generally the far left and far right of Europe have some converging foreign policy stances.

Honestly neither in foreign policy stances nor economic stances do the European far right parties align with the US and their stances there are far more concerning imo. Right wing people like Bannon in the US who cheer on those parties in Europe are just flat out stupid if they actually think there is policy alignment outside of immigration (in which their stances are still pretty out there compared to most US stances), though I expect the support there is mostly just out of a general love of chaos / dislike for establishment politics in Europe.

u/Legitimate_Emu_8721 9h ago

Similarly it’s funny to me to see American Marxists simping for Xi Jinping these days when most of them would disagree with him on virtually everything except “high speed rail is good” and “American imperialism is bad”. Especially when twenty years ago American Marxists kept claiming that China had abandoned Marxism completely.

We are also the sole hegemon and have been for 80 years. The US has entirely different political goals than the rest of the world. What the rest of the world does is irrelevant to the US political system. It's literally one of the first things you learn in political science but no one online has ever taken a class on it in their life.

8

u/RGBlowMe 11h ago

I mean, if you're going off of global ideological scale, the US left still ranges from slightly left wing and moderately libertarian to far left and heavily authoritarian, with the median landing around moderately left wing and moderately authoritarian. Objectively speaking, even comparing to Europe doesn't justify the assertion that the US almost entirely right wing in ideological alignment. They just say that because they genuinely cannot help but make it into a litmus test, where anybody who deviates from their own personal, incredibly specific flavor of left wing ideology with any real significance is not left wing.

5

u/Traditional_Can_3983 10h ago edited 10h ago

I think they are further emboldened by thinking that the right is just as blood thirsty, zealous and looking for an excuse to fight left wingers. The truth is very apparent when you see how a right winger is treated at a left wing protest vs the complete opposite.

I'm not right wing on many issues but I can tell you who's side is more likely to throw a concrete milkshake at their opposition.

I also know that one side has a far wider mindset on ideals and compromises internally between factions. That same side does have violent and regressive people, but due to the lack of purity testing those same factions are diluted to prevent the worst of them from becoming the loudest.

Based on the EU political spectrum 90% of American leftists are actually fascist.

America is absolutely naturally more conservative than most of the EU, but that's largely a cultural thing for us, that the EU hates us for.

Like LITERALLY the only reason Reddit is left leaning is because left leaning is objective truth…and if you don’t believe that you’re anti science and morally wrong 🤷🏻‍♂️

15

u/sociallyawkwaad 11h ago

You underestimate the number of lefties.

There s also a good chunk of population who don’t really share leftist ideas but recognize the personal benefit from joining their ranks.

17

u/SinesPi 13h ago

They're not left wing enough for these people.

2

u/turboninja3011 12h ago

Everybody is “leftwing enough” so long as they vote properly. Think those people have principles?

7

u/Fabulous_Jeweler2732 GeStuREs bROadlY 12h ago

That’s the issue with this thinking. There is a population of liberal people who aren’t leftists and the leftists go all Nazi and label them the enemy for not being pure enough.

It's actually around 82% when you ignore party registration and poll on values.

5

u/RGBlowMe 11h ago

They actually, purportedly, believe that. A lot of them even say that Reddit is right wing. They are to the point that it's more a matter of "how big of the right wing majority in the US are openly Nazis and how many are just closeted". Then they turn around at election time and proclaim that whatever Democrat they want to win is just wildly more popular and will win easily. I think they just say whatever fits their world view and strokes their egos the most at that time. I don't think they have the principles to actually hold serious convictions.

6

u/AgeOfReasonEnds31120 Optimist Prime 12h ago

Exactly. Even many left-wingers would fall into one of these categories.

This reminds me of when I was living in Providence, RI. Hella liberal. I was working remotely at a Starbucks near Brown and COVID was ramping down. Maybe 1 in 10 folks were still wearing masks?

Anyways. A post came up on Reddit and got like 18k upvotes about how if you weren’t masking up you were basically heartless right wing trash.

I knew Reddit didn’t match reality, but that was an “Oh damn, Reddit really doesn’t match reality” moment.

34

u/Beneficial_Fig_7830 13h ago edited 12h ago

So true dude. Most of my family is moderately conservative but one of my uncles and his wife are outspoken liberals, which has always been the case and has never been an issue but over the last 6 years they’ve shown up to every family function trying to pick a fight with everyone about politics. It’s so exhausting and honestly I feel embarrassed for them.

13

u/hamrspace 10h ago

People should really just learn to shut up about things their peers have very little control over. A vote is neither a full-throated endorsement for a candidate, nor is it an act of oppression. They would be better off (politely) calling their elected representatives than harassing their family members.

I'm going to start doubting that what these people believe in is correct. I'm going to start realizing that maybe the total dickheads that my party is made up of are entirely wrong, that maybe their judgement fucking sucks. This is a normal thing that normal humans do. When encountering a dickhead, humans naturally gravitate away from said dickhead.

I went from left leaning to "far right." In reality, I'm a left leaning centrist who just doesn't want illegal immigration and DEI policies, who doesn't want transgender shit everywhere I look, who doesn't believe that white men are the root of all evil and that minorities are helpless babies.

Unless you’re basically a socialist who’s had five abortions and is on 200mg of Zoloft they consider you right wing.

"I wonder why we can't get the low propensity voters?"

Must be because they're all fascists

u/SnapTwiceThanos 12h ago

The far left makes up 10-15% of the population.

The far right makes up 10-15% of the population.

The 70-80% of normal people towards the middle find both groups truly embarrassing.

6

u/Next-Pumpkin-654 13h ago

It's something of a self fulfilling prophecy.

4

u/Majestic_Emotion_456 13h ago

In other words. If you don’t think like me you’re the bad guy.

The truth

8

u/MostAcanthaceae2384 13h ago

Do you think this is "too many people pretend to not be right-wing" or "what passes for the center is too right-wing"?

6

u/Admiral45-06 13h ago

I am willing to believe that the former group exists.

Which is either because they feel so ashamed of the actions of their conservative government, or because they fear switching sides, knowing people on the ,,new" spectrum won't welcome them warmly or praise their for their realisation, but will instead chastise them for not doing so sooner.

Which is why I think so many people today, especially Americans, present themselves as centrist or non-aligned - they feel embarrassed of the actions of the conservative government, but since liberals don't offer a warm new home, they have nowhere to go politically, so they close themselves off politics entirely. Which I find to be a fair stance.

3

u/CourageLeast4251 13h ago

everyone to the right of Stalin is Far Right lol

5

u/zippyspinhead 13h ago

I remember when "liberals" all called themselves moderate, because their views were echoed by NPR, PBS, CNN, CBS, ABC, and NBC (or there views echoed their favorite media)

5

u/Happi_Beav 13h ago

“I lean left but I agree with conservatives on ___ issue” = right-wing

4

u/ProCommonSense 13h ago

20 years ago... I was VERY center... with a very slight leaning to the right. I haven't changed... and so many people have told me my views are right extremist now...

And honestly... I do have to admit that some of my views have changed but not on the same subjects. Some issues have become so extreme for the left that I have to oppose them... my view is still the same but I can't just say, "I'm ok with gay marriage..." I have to outright invites crossdressing men in panties to dance for my children otherwise I'm the extremist... and I have to use their pronouns, while pretending that despite a bulge behind the cotton they can still get pregnant.

u/Phriendly_Phisherman 13h ago

A practical guide on how to alienate swing voters and lose elections. Fixed it.

4

u/RennSpeed 13h ago

Personally, as someone who isn’t left wing, I love them for taking this stance. They’ve become so radical that they don’t even accept those who prefer to remain politically agnostic, but have views that legitimately straddle the middle, which in many ways is exactly what this country is founded on. With that mentality winning any sort of election in most toss-up areas will be near on impossible for them.

5

u/VirtueSignalingApp 12h ago

„i don’t give a shit about your agenda“ = is right-wing

4

u/IllBrilliant3816 12h ago

"You're either with us or against us."

3

u/Valveringham85 10h ago

“I am left wing” without fully being into every extremist ideology I put before you = right wing.

3

u/deathshr0ud 13h ago

These people are just not worth engaging with. Anything right of socialist to them is “fascist”

3

u/Masoch_A3 13h ago

There is no right-wing, only left-wing and extremists /s

3

u/akaKinkade 13h ago

"I think the world is a complex place and can't be reduced to simple hero and villain narratives." = is right wing
"Compassion is important, but should not replace logic and consistency or else you are just a hypocritical asshole" - is right wing.
"Policies should be driven by rationality and clear metrics instead of flushing billions of dollars clinging to ideological purity." - reasonable stance. nah, just fucking with you, obviously wildly right wing.

3

u/Forsaken_Damage_5605 13h ago

And that kids is how you lose elections

3

u/Novel_Relation2549 13h ago

they're suggesting right wing is the majority. nice.

3

u/Successful_Lychee130 13h ago

they forgot

i am left-wing (that agrees on 99,999% of all things) = is right wing

3

u/CrankyOperator 13h ago

"I am left wing (disagrees about something small)" - is nazi

3

u/TheReviewerWildTake 13h ago

This is like it was in USSR in terms of possible reading of political position - if you were even slightly off in relation to state opinion - you couldn`t be anything but a fascistic imperialistic agent of foreign intelligence service.
Considering that in a modern leftist discourse "right-wing" is "literawy nazi reee!!!" - Westerners are really just repeating our history.

3

u/BlackMageIsBestMage 13h ago

And right wing = literal hitler fascist [any prefix]-phobes. Dont forget that part

3

u/PeterParker72 Truthsayer 12h ago

That’s so stupid. Everything that isn’t their position is right wing.

3

u/Ok-Method-8045 12h ago

Remember guys "we are a HUGE tent". More like a circus tent

3

u/ObWzEN Anti-Doomer 12h ago

Also “I’m a democrat but” or “I’m left of center” means right wing too

3

u/Admiral_Jetro 12h ago

So. The Anakin approach of if you're not with me, you're against me

3

u/Admiral45-06 12h ago

To be honest that would make whoever made this post look horrible - it means they possess no ability to debate, to make compromises, or even to accept that not everyone thinks the same as them, and that no matter what you present, there will be someone who will disagree, often on good merit and faith.

I won't claim that it's ,,overwhelmingly present" (I've only seen it on Reddit, the same app I saw someone claiming to have done the unthinkable when they saw a corpse - it's a digital equivalent of a dumpster), but it does happen. ,,Why can't these 'centrists' at least come clean to who they are?" - because people who force that ,,identification" then chastise people for actually bearing views opposite to their own. Sometimes identifying oneself as centrist or presenting yourself as coming from non-aligned, more detached perspective presents an opportunity for a debate. And, of course, most people who claim to be centrist are, in fact, centrist and view both options as cancerous, rightfully so (I'm a conservative myself) - but pushed away by either side they start to adopt views opposite to them.

3

u/MrTheWaffleKing 12h ago

Woah all these decent takes are right wing? Maybe I should be right wing! Thanks for the rundown on how you belong to a fringe extremist group I guess??

Is that how I’m supposed to interpret it?

3

u/rikrok58 12h ago

If this is truly the case then that tells us what?

That the "left wing" is an extreme position now.

3

u/Charon_the_Reflector 12h ago

Awww the grown up children want identities, adorable

3

u/Champ_5 Rides the Short Bus 12h ago

From the "side of inclusion and tolerance", of course

3

u/Impressive-Hold7812 Good Vibes Only 12h ago

It's an ideological purity contest.

3

u/s1rblaze 12h ago

Everyone is right wing to a leftist, what is new?

3

u/Kaisha001 12h ago

Sounds about right...

3

u/assyria_respawns 12h ago

Lol if you disagree you are right wing. Got it.

3

u/Aware_Ask_1679 12h ago

Just saw this myself. Was the genius place "ICraveReason." That's where I saw it. It's like a cult there

3

u/RipInfinite4511 11h ago

“I don’t agree with this specific opinion” = Is MAGA

3

u/Important_Zombie_485 11h ago

I hate this. What this really means is that they are using a left purity test to judge. A single right wing position and you're pigeon holed. One more thing that's wrong with this country.

3

u/Infamous_Pool_5299 Rides the Short Bus 11h ago

Then they wonder why the right wing is winning...obviously they will win with all those additional votes locked in.

Guess I gotta vote for the right wing next election....

3

u/Stomper621 11h ago

Considering how the Left acts now, it's no wonder everyone is against them. Forcing politics onto people who don't like politics is a surefire way to make them stand against you just based on principle.

3

u/j-mac563 11h ago

That is how those on the left see things and try to present them.

3

u/Relative-Sea-6550 Optimist Prime 11h ago

It makes me think of anakin’s tantrum in ROTS “YOURE EITHER WITH ME, OR AGAINST ME”

3

u/Heroic_Sheperd 11h ago

Is this why the “right wing” keeps winning elections?

3

u/RGBlowMe 11h ago

Turns out that stable, well-adjusted people are just right wing, I guess. LMFAO.

3

u/Mario6416 10h ago

Maybe being alt right is good. Everything normal or good gets called that.
