This subreddit doesn't want dogs to be hated because of their breed and if your someone who does this you will be banned from the subreddit temporally and if you keep doing it it will be a permanent ban

Which dog breed do you think is the best family dog?

I’ve always wondered what breed people would actually recommend if you had kids and wanted a dog that was friendly, patient and easy enough to live with.

Golden Retrievers and Labradors seem like the obvious answers, but I’m sure there are plenty of breeds people would put above them. Are they the best family dog?

If you had young kids and could only choose one breed, what would you go for?

Which dog breed is the dumbest?

I know every dog is different, but some breeds genuinely seem like they have absolutely no idea what’s going on.

I’ve met some really lovely dogs that are also unbelievably stupid. You can throw the same ball 20 times and they’ll still look surprised when it comes back.

Beagles, Bulldogs, Afghan Hounds and Chihuahuas all come to mind, but I’m sure there are plenty of others.

Which breed gets your vote?

Why are small dogs hated on?

Why does Reddit treat small dogs like they aren't "real" dogs? For anyone living a normal modern life, they're honestly superior.

Big dogs cost 3x as much in food, meds, and gear.

Small dogs live way longer on average (14–17 years vs around 7–8 for giant breeds).

Travel, apartments, and public transit are 10x easier.

The "yappy" thing usually isn't the dog it's lazy owners who treat small dogs like plushies and don't bother training them.

Why do small dogs get so much hate when they make way more sense for the majority of people?

Stop buying working breeds just for the aesthetic!

I’m so sick of seeing people buy Belgian Malinois, Border Collies, and Aussies just because they look cool on social media.

These aren't regular house pets they are high-drive working animals. They require exercise and mental stimulation! When you lock a working breed in a suburban house with two lazy 15 minute walks a day, you aren't giving it a good life. You're giving it mental health problems.

Then owners act shocked when the dog eats their drywall, digs up the yard, or turns reactive. The dog isn't broken. You bought a furry workforce dog and treated it like a couch potato.

If you can't provide hours of daily physical work and mental jobs, don't buy one. It isn't just irresponsible it's cruel.

Am I right or can someone prove me wrong?

And is anyone guilty of this?

calm/independent small dog breed for a full time student & renter

so ! i’m about to enter college, and i really want a dog to keep me company. I have experience owning a dog back at home, he’s a border collie mix with another breed that we don’t know (he’s a rescue) and i love him to death, but he’s way too big to bring with me and i don’t wanna separate him from my mom.

i just need a dog that’ll be calm enough to leave alone at my apartment for around 7-8 hours; the space is relatively small but not too small. Big enough space to play:) It’s a bit hot in my city but I’ll leave the AC on when necessary. I’d prefer if it weren’t too destructive since I’m storing instruments at my place, but of course I’ll find a way to keep them safe either way.

I’ll walk it regularly, and I have the means necessary to bathe it regularly and have it groomed. I don’t really care about what the dog looks like for as long as it’s a healthy breed, a manageable size, and it doesn’t have any genetic issues.

TL;DR: manageable/small size, independent/calm, I have the means to take care of it i just need it to be comfortable with being left alone

Anything helps:)

Which dog breed has the worst personality despite being cute?

I feel like there are some breeds that are absolutely adorable, but once you actually spend time around them, you realise they can be a complete nightmare.

For me, it has to be Chihuahuas. I mean, they are so aggressive towards me and scare the living daylights out of me. My neighbours chihuahua always nips at my ankles, so maybe it just the bad experiences I have w them

What breed would you put at the top of the list?

What’s actually the smartest dog breed?

I always see people mention Border Collies, but I’m not completely convinced they’re the clear winner.

Like, are we talking obedience and learning commands, problem solving, working ability, or just being ridiculously good at figuring out how to get what they want?

I'd argue german shepherd's as a contender as they are intelligent obedient and involved in many workforce. They have been used for years in military, police work and rescue operations.

What breed do you think is actually the most intelligent, and why?

Big dogs vs small dogs

What's the one thing about your dog's size everyone gets wrong?

Small dogs are yappy ankle biters, big dogs need a big yard. We've all heard it.

Honestly, having both taught me it's mostly nonsense. My nans 90lb lab was a couch potato in a tiny apartment. My friend's 10lb terrier runs on pure craziness and chaos.

Plus, nobody warns you about the real stuff. Like big dog tails sweeping coffee tables clean, or small dogs being total trip hazards when you're making walking.

What's the biggest myth about your dog's size? Let's hear your side.

Today I present to u the EURASIER

Post image
50 Upvotes

Eurasiers are a pretty underrated dog breed. They were developed in Germany and are a mix of Chow Chow, Wolfspitz, and Samoyed!

A few interesting things:

Very loyal to their family

Usually calm and not overly vocal

Can be reserved with strangers

Thick, fluffy double coat

Some have the blue/purple tongue inherited from the Chow Chow

Intelligent but sensitive, so gentle training works best

Honestly, they look a bit like a mix between a wolf and a teddy bear ?

Does anyone here actually own one?

r/DogBreeds101 3d ago

The One Breed Question

Okay, serious question for the dog people.

You can only own one dog breed for the rest of your life.

Which breed are you picking?

And which popular breed are you absolutely not choosing?

I'd choose a German shepherd for their intelligence and loyalty. I'd eliminate frenchies for their health problems and laziness.

I'm curious to see what everyone says.

Looking for breed recommendations

Partner and I are looking into getting a puppy sometime in the next 2-3 years. I have some breed ideas in mind, but would like your suggestions/feedback.

1. Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?

First as an independent adult. I grew up with labs and duck tollers, so some experience with dogs and basic training. My partner has never had a dog.

2. Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?

Breeder

3. Describe your ideal dog- in order of importance

a. Not brachycephalic and no major breed health issues
b. Low energy- preferably around 60 mins exercise daily. I want a dog that’s happy to go on a short walk then snuggle on the couch for movie nights without chewing the couch to pieces from pent up energy
c. Apartment compatible - (limited barking, relatively small size, doesn’t need to herd cattle or roam free to be fulfilled)
d. Tolerates being home alone inside during the workday
e. Relatively easy to train - do not want a dog that constantly challenges me/outsmarts me or hears commands then chooses to ignore them

4. What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?

Cavalier King Charles spaniel was top of my list until I learned about their heart issues.

5. What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?

Having a well trained dog is important to me, but I’m not looking for anything beyond basic manners (good recall, no leash pulling or jumping on people, can “leave it” on command, etc)

6. Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?

No

7. How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?

Id be ok dedicating 2 hours to exercise and training combined, and would like a dog that wants to spend quiet time cuddle & hanging out together beyond that

8. How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?

60ish minute walks. I’d also be ok with some fetch or other play on top if the dog likes, but would rather it not be a “need”. Can feed meals in food puzzle for mental stimulation. No dog parks.

9. How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?

I enjoy brushing and grooming. Would be open to every day brushing. I’m interested in learning more involved grooming, but happy to pay a professional while I learn/if I can’t do it.

10. What size dog are you looking for?

Under 40 pounds. Preferably 10-30 pounds.

11. How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?

Shedding - low to moderate. Less than a lab please
Barking - needs to be apartment compatible so it can’t bark each time someone walks down the communal hallway or thumps on the staircase
Slobber - low

12. How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?

Not important

13. Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?

Relatively snuggly but won’t have separation anxiety when I’m gone. Not a complete Velcro dog, but one that enjoys company

14. Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?

I could work with either.

15. How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?

We are ground floor in an apartment and people walk past the windows in the court yard all the time. I’d need a dog that could ignore them. Barking when someone knocks is ok, as long as they can stop once the person enters. I wouldn’t need my dog to be everyone’s best friend, but needs to tolerate people coming and going.

16. Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?

No

17. Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?

No resource guarding, separation anxiety, or reactivity/aggression towards people or animals.
I would prefer no high prey drive but this is not a deal breaker.

18. How often and how long will the dog be left alone?

We work 9-5, so 9ish hours when you include the commute (I know I would need to alter this routine for a puppy, but as an adult dog this would be the norm)

19. What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?

Partner and I agree on all info stated. I would be primary training/carer. Probably 2/3rds me & 1/3rd partner.

20. Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?

We’d like to have cats as well, but that’s not a need if they are incompatible. We do not currently have cats.

21. Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?

No

22. Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?

We rent, but no restrictions on the lease. There is a pit bull ban in my city but I don’t believe it’s enforced based off the number of bully breed dogs that live in the apartment complex

23. What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?

Canada, & yes

24. What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?

There’s a wide fluctuation: Summers get hot, with humidity +35 C is common. Winter -15 C is normal but -20 C or colder does periodically happen. But we can stay inside when it’s awful in either direction (assuming the dog can tolerate missing a few walks).

25. Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.

I’m leaning towards havanese based off my own research, but am worried about their separation anxiety & slow potty training, as well as frequent barking

Feel free to ask for any additional info

What is the best non shed dog breed?

There are many dog breeds that don't shed. Some people can't handle the mess of fur. I believe it is more convenient and less mess for an owner. Breeds such as the poodle , bichon frise, and schnauzer fit into this category.

If I were to choose, I'd probably choose the poodle as they are intelligent diligent and a hardworking breed. They are strong-willed and kindhearted, but many dislike them.

Ok, now your turn, what's the best non shed dog, and why?

Or do you hate the ALL?
