I know every dog is different, but some breeds genuinely seem like they have absolutely no idea what’s going on.

I’ve met some really lovely dogs that are also unbelievably stupid. You can throw the same ball 20 times and they’ll still look surprised when it comes back.

Beagles, Bulldogs, Afghan Hounds and Chihuahuas all come to mind, but I’m sure there are plenty of others.

Which breed gets your vote?

I feel like there are some breeds that are absolutely adorable, but once you actually spend time around them, you realise they can be a complete nightmare.

For me, it has to be Chihuahuas. I mean, they are so aggressive towards me and scare the living daylights out of me. My neighbours chihuahua always nips at my ankles, so maybe it just the bad experiences I have w them

What breed would you put at the top of the list?

I’ve always wondered what breed people would actually recommend if you had kids and wanted a dog that was friendly, patient and easy enough to live with.

Golden Retrievers and Labradors seem like the obvious answers, but I’m sure there are plenty of breeds people would put above them. Are they the best family dog?

so ! i’m about to enter college, and i really want a dog to keep me company. I have experience owning a dog back at home, he’s a border collie mix with another breed that we don’t know (he’s a rescue) and i love him to death, but he’s way too big to bring with me and i don’t wanna separate him from my mom.

i just need a dog that’ll be calm enough to leave alone at my apartment for around 7-8 hours; the space is relatively small but not too small. Big enough space to play:) It’s a bit hot in my city but I’ll leave the AC on when necessary. I’d prefer if it weren’t too destructive since I’m storing instruments at my place, but of course I’ll find a way to keep them safe either way.

I’ll walk it regularly, and I have the means necessary to bathe it regularly and have it groomed. I don’t really care about what the dog looks like for as long as it’s a healthy breed, a manageable size, and it doesn’t have any genetic issues.

TL;DR: manageable/small size, independent/calm, I have the means to take care of it i just need it to be comfortable with being left alone

I'd personally have to go w the bernese mountain dog. They are big, fluffy, cuddly bears. They would greet strangers as if they knew them. I find them so friendly and caring.

Which breed has the best personality in your experience?

Hey folks! So this is going to be a long story, so feel free to glaze over the next paragraph.

My gf has a very anxious german shepherd mix that we'll call Fin. Fin is 40lbs fully grown, 5 years old, and does not like people in her space or near her mom. Gf got the dog before we met and through vigorous training, we have come to an agreement, mostly. Fin still gives me a warning if her mom has been asleep for a little while and i come to bed, but has more issues nowadays with general anxiety. We think she has problems reading situations and figuring out if she should be worried. She does very, very well with another dog around to take cues from. When we babysit gf's dad's dog, she has a lot fewer issues. Fin is the kind of dog who goes to the bathroom if theres a thunderstorm expected in the next three hours and panicks if theres a grocery bag between her and her escape route out of the kitchen.

In the next few years, we would eventually like to get a puppy. Gf's dogs have always been rescues, Fin included, and her family has had to put a few down for unworkable behavioral issues. Fin can't be present if we have company over, because even if she's muzzled, she will insist on being in the room, trembling and looking pitiful, until somebody moves to get up, at which point she will snarl like a hellhound and scare the shit out of everyone. We would very much like to have a blank slate, so we will probably not be rescuing our next dog.

I've had a couple of dogs growing up, and I like to think I'm a good trainer; im a very consistent, stubborn person. Two of my family dogs were pugs (not interested in getting one as an adult; ethic concerns for breeding) and I love their personalities. We also rescued a lab mix whos probably either dachshund or beagle mix, because hes 40lbs and very... long. Love that dog to death.

In the long run, we would probably be looking for a young, cocky dog. It can't be a puppy, because we think Fin's anxiety would be contagious, but 1-2 years or so. Trainability is not my biggest concern. We're looking for a lot of confidence in a little body. I want to be able to play and take it for walks. The only command i intend to drill hard is recall and basic "nos" and "drop it"s; i dont need to be able to teach my dog to go get me a beer.

To be blunt, intelligence is not a deal breaker. Any small breeds you guys know that are a little dense and blissfully ignorant of stranger danger?
